When I was in my younger teens I remember watching a horror movie about a group of kids who end up on Alcatraz and slaughtered by demons. I thought to myself wow that scared the bejesus out of me. Little did I know a couple decades later would I be using paranormal equipment in search of this 22 acres islands secrets. As much as I could go on about the history which coincides with Alcatraz it truly wouldn't be much without its ghost stories as well.

When I started the Paranormal & Ghost Society back in 2001 I made it a goal to someday visit this island which is rumored to be perhaps the top 10 haunted locations in the entire world. A majority of employees and visitors have experienced ghost surrounding the island. Some of those individuals are very credibile individuals such as security, rangers and even guards when this location was fully operable. Believe it or not despite the haunts which transpire surrounding "The Rock" it is one of the best places you can take your children so that they can learn about the different aspects of its rich history which also comes with its ghosts.

Although Alcatraz can be quite intimidating with its ruins and overgrown foliage life on the island is quite abundant. So in this article I am going to talk a little bit about some of the more well known haunting's. After all, I did investigate one of the most haunted islands in the world so it deserves some paranormal blotter. Based on my brief first investigation on the island I did notice a television crew there its not uncommon for other paranormal groups to monitor this location for activity. Some of the haunts however date back far beyond the paranormal became main stream. Being a paranormal investigator I try not to be main stream but rather we use allot of our own techniques which always produce good results no matter if my children are with me or I take along new team members.

Alcatraz is an island with a very dark history not to say all prisoners had bad experiences some claimed that some of the best food was served here out of all other federal prisons. However sexual assaults, murder, physical violence, conspiracies, illnesses, torture, deaths, riots and mayhem have all been factors contributing to the haunting's which take place on Alcatraz. Every building perhaps has a story or tale of its own some of the strange occurrences may occur in the later hours of the night when the staff goes home and things settle down a little.

The island of Alcatraz which resides in the San Francisco Bay dates back to the 1700's but it was the natives who first discovered it even prior to that. It served as a military outpost, fort, military prison, federal prison, eventually a home for the native Americans and falling into the hands of the Golden Gate Recreational Park. I have red that over 40 Civil War soldiers died on the island, 5 suicides, 15 plus who passed on due to illnesses then 8 inmates as well as guards murdered by prisoners. The guards did not carry any weapons when it was a federal prison however the ones in the guard tower did and yes they actually shot a few inmates attempting to escape. Prisoners would often make shivs which were sharp objects used to shank other inmates and guards some came to Alcatraz and some never left. Violence within the pen was mainstream as some of the countries most hardened criminals served time here. Those manifestations of torture, physical abuse, guilt, sorrow, sin and these men's dreams may have contributed to the islands haunting's. However their are other haunting's that have taken place that do not have explanations.

One of the most famous stories told is about the Ghost of Al Capone some feel he was the kingpin responsible for the Valentines Day Massacre. Sadly most mobsters back in the day were never prosecuted due to witnesses living in fear of repercussions. Capone also known as scar face was on the first train out to Alcatraz when prisoners in the 1930's began to be transferred to the island. Capone suffered from syphilis so most of his time in prison was spent in the hospital. He feared that if he spent time in the recreational yard he may have been killed so he received special recreational permission to play his banjo in the shower room. Although Capone claimed he was haunted by some of the ghost his men and he wronged it is ironic that his ghost now haunts Alcatraz. It has been said that sometimes you can hear his banjo being heard from the prison without any explanation. Life on the island was structured prisoners were given shelter, food, shelter and medical care. Other mobsters such as George the "Machine-Gun" Kelly, Alvin Karpis and Arthur "Dock" Barker also spent time as inmates here. Unlike other prisons where guards could be manipulated for special privileges this was not the case here which caused great emotional strain on big guns like these mobsters. It would be no wonder that even today their ghost continues to linger its hall.

Another haunted location is the Warden's house more or less it is a mansion overlooking San Francisco and the Golden Gate. It was used by a military commander prior to when the wardens used it as their own residence. Back in the 1940's a ghostly figure of a man was seen where some of the men were playing poker at a Christmas party. The man appeared to be smoking a cigar, wearing a suit and having a hat with a brim. The room became cold as ice and the lights began to flicker. Even the stove which heated the room burnt out and many of the men playing poker left out of fear. The man also had side burns thus I believe that this may have been a ghost of a civil war soldier if you pay very close attention I have a photo of a man that fits this description on our prologue page standing next to a cannon.

Although some haunting's seem to be residual others appear to be more tragic haunts such as the riot in 1946 which led to the deaths of three convicts, Cretzer, Hubbard and Coy. Not only were they killed during a failed escape but several guards were held hostage and two were murdered. These guards never carried weapons their job was to maintain order do their ghost haunt the utility day which leads to the corridor where bullets and shrapnel flew? Some psychics theorize that the ghost of the riots are violent unsettled spirits.

Then you have the water surrounding the island which were cold and believe me full of great white sharks even though the authorities denies it. If you were to escape the island the first obstacle would be climbing off its cliffs which dropped off into the harsh currents of the bay. If you were to swim away from the island the currents would push you right back onto it. While some escapees were never found the authorities felt they either drowned or died from hypothermia. So you also have ghost which surround the shores of the island which today are overgrown with foliage giving the island a very eerie feeling.

The Cafeteria is also known to be another haunted side as rangers have heard clinking and clanking of silverware. Sometimes even voices are heard talking as back in the day the only time inmates could converse was in the yard or while dining. The cafeteria was a great place because the inmates enjoyed a wide variety of food some of the best in the prison system. Any types of sounds such as muffled voices or noises in the kitchen sounds very residual afterall for many years hundreds of men dined at the same time everyday and this is all they knew.

The oldest structure on Alcatraz is the Sally Port and served as the forts guardhouse. It had a moat, gun room, cannons, guards and of course cold rooms where prisoners were kept. During the Civil War, Alcatraz was used as a military prison for the worst criminals such as murderers, deserters, thieves, rapist and treasonist. In 1859 eleven soldiers were brought to the island by the forts first permanent garrison. Their were also confederate prisoners that were jailed on the island as well as Hopi, Modoc's and the Apaches during some Indian scrimmages. I do not have a number of how many men were killed, tortured or died but their is no way to know the actual number. Some websites say 45 Civil War soldiers died on this island and I am not sure they were all due to medical reasons. Nights were cold on the island these men froze no blankets, warm fires or even the comfort of a bed. Their tortured souls may haunt the Sally Port as a paranormal investigator the tunnel hit a few red lights even with me.

One of the most intriguing areas was the hospital where many of the inmates were treated for illness while some were cured others passed on. The hospital is extremely icy cold the rooms are dark and from my experience you are not alone when roaming its rooms. Apparitions have been seen in the hospital generally it stays locked most of the time. People have heard odd sounds from the stairwell leading up to the hospital ward and heard movement. A ranger told me that being locked inside the hospital is definitely not a fun experience. I can only assume that he was hinting on it being as cold as the spirits that haunt its dim halls.

Throughout the 1940's till prison closed many of the guards including their families had strange experiences on the island. Alcatraz does have a tunnel system underground but even the haunting's seem to take place just about anywhere no matter if they are eerie dark places or on the grounds out in the open. The most common activities to be experienced were sounds of people crying, whispering, moaning, horrible smells, cold spots and something known as "The Thing"! What is the thing? Its a phantom maybe even something demonic with glowing eyes. The first individuals to experience this thing were those who were thrown in a place they called "The Hole" or in simple terms solitary confinement. Cell 14 had a hole in the floor that was used for a toilet otherwise the entire room was bare. I have done some research which proves a couple suicides took place in this cell maybe madness or something more sinister at work. The guards would often turn off the single light to psychologically mess with the inmates. Whatever is in this cell is where this entity seems to originate from as those who peer into the darkness of it often see a set of glowing red eyes. The same eyes other inmates including guards had seen throughout their years on the island. I did personally visit cell 14 taking EVP's and Readings although some experience paranormal activity here I felt the room consumed with loneliness.

Although "The Rock" has its fair share of spooky stories their are some rather funny haunting's as well unless your not accustomed to living a life surrounded by the unknown. Back in the day the prison exercise yard was a place where the inmates could socialize, enjoy the breeze and work out. Of course fights at times would break out however the real chiller is when the guards would take a head count to make sure all the inmates were lined up to return to their cells. Sometimes the guards would notice men dressed in strange attire or counted more heads then men out in the yard. Some of the guards found out from their counts that some of these men were dressed in military uniforms perhaps the ghost of the Civil War Soldiers who died and never left the island. Like with most entities one can look out of the corner of your eye see it then you blink and its gone. This type of haunting seemed to be this type of instance as the ghostly men would always disappear once the guards took a second head count.

Now since I talked about some of the haunting's and ghost what about ghostly objects manifesting. Sure I heard about ghost ships and trains but the island has its own ghostly lighthouse which appears out of the fog sometimes giving off whistling sounds and flashing sounds as it passes by the entire island. But the lighthouse isn't the only phantom object to be heard or seen. More then often cannon and gun shots are heard on the island as well as random screams. Although the fort seen little action they did test their weapons and at times those weapons would be used on escapees. Just as a shiv was used to murder an inmate in the laundry room. The guards including those who dare to venture often experience this mystery smoke which surrounds the inside of the laundry facility in model industries building.

We can speculate that perhaps these ghost didn't just haunt the rangers, guards or families on the island but also the inmates to. When inmates were put into "The Hole" they claimed they were being attacked by an evil entity. The guards thought to themselves these were just mad men. But perhaps they were not maybe just maybe these ghost were the souls of the victims that these inmates caused pain to. Lets face it some of the men who served time in Alcatraz were bloody murderers. Not all men were bad I have learned over time not to judge others for their mistakes. Some of those men were doing time because they didn't pay taxes or they broke some other law at the time that what I see is not criminal the federal system did. Many of these men spent cold nights shivering in their cells some cried while talking was not allowed these men had the bare minimum life was not easy living on this island. Indeed you had a great view of the bay and San Francisco if you pay mind to our galleries we try to give our viewers photos that depict what life living on this island from within the looking glass. Some psychics have called this place a paranormal prison or a place where the punishers became the punished!

One of the spookiest tales of all as mentioned above is about the solitary confinement cell known as 14 D where many claimed a red eyed thing taunted them. Sure anyone can make up stories but their is some evidence to support that the paranormal within Alcatraz is also capable of causing someone harm. Sure, generally most entities are peaceful but their are allot of entities who pick and choose. Their are entities who might pick on a certain paranormal investigator or an inmate or a family member of one of the guards etc. This concept is the same when it comes to all ghost hunters their are good entities and not so good ones. The only difference is that one of the inmates who was put into solitary complained that he was being attacked by an entity it was ignored. The next morning when the guards opened the cell door they found the convict strangled to death with no evidence as to who did it or how it happened. Which also proves that these entities are very capable of causing torment or perhaps spiritual justice as I like to call it.

Not only did guards have personal paranormal experience but the wonderful Warden Johnston also known as the "Golden Rule Warden" heard sobbing coming from within the prison walls. Perhaps the tunnels which ran behind the cells which btw led to the a few prisoners using them as a means to escape. Johnston was not much of a believer in ghost then again experience a cool breeze and hearing the sounds of sobbing is enough to make even the most hardened skeptics believers in the unknown. Although blocks A, B and C were not as sinister with ghostly activity the sound of ghostly footsteps, whistles, ghostly harmonicas, laughs, cold spots, crying, clanking of its iron bars including tales about a ghost of a mob hit man named the Butcher who murdered another inmate at Alcatraz. Some of the spirits that haunt the island haunt it because they will never be at peace if in the life we know of now you did evil chances are when you pass on your spirit is not going to be Casper the Friendly Ghost....Hell No!

One of my inspirations was Peter James some of you know he did pass away but I found his work to be astonishing. He had the opportunity much like I did to investigate parts of the island. James focused on the main cell house more then anywhere else on the island. He picked up the voices of tortured souls who were in a state of madness probably as their condition was when they passed. He sensed that many of the prisons were abused, mistreated and suffered in pain. Their was a dungeon underground below the cell house rumored to have been the place torture was committed at. I honestly have read bits and pieces about it but some of the worlds greatest criminals were in fear of being locked up within the darkness.

Another strange location is building 64 which was at one time the military barracks and later a place for civilian families to reside at when Alcatraz was transformed into a federal prison. Many children resided in the apartments, guards and family members of the prison staff from 1933 to 1963. In 1969 the native American tribes used this as their own residential complex for at least a couple of years till Golden Gate Recreational Parks took over the island.

In my opinion although access inside is limited this is the most eerie of all buildings with a maze of halls. Its a massive building greeting every boat that docks on the island. At one time the lower floor served as a casemented barracks made out of brick to protect the soldiers near the gates of Sally Port also artillery was stored here. Although it was built in the 1960's in 1905 three more concrete stories were added to the original building. Once it was enlarged it served as a quarters for soldiers assigned to prison guard duty up until 1933 when Alcatraz became a federal prison. Most of the newer guards that arrived at Alcatraz often lived here prior to being moved into the new staff quarters. Some of the families disliked this dark building some of them had some pretty intense ghostly experiences such as hearing moans, crying, whispers etc. While some residents couldn't wait to get out others had some really spacious units with great views of the San Francisco Bay. The first floor of the buildings today is now the gift shop and theatre some of the staff has claimed that equipment sometimes turns on by itself.

With so many strange stories over the years from not only those associated with the island but credible witnesses as well as other paranormal experts it would appear that every landmark found on "The Rock" bares a haunting tragic story of its own to tell. When the rangers, staff and tourist go home for the night perhaps the island takes on a life of its own perhaps it isn't abandoned afterall as its ghosts wander the halls and dark passages for eternity! It is no wonder why with all the stories of beatings, sadness, despair, violence, conspiracies, tales of betrayal, death and history that it is one of the most eeriest islands today in the world!
