Above is what is called building 64 and its one of the largest landmarks on "The Rock". At one time this long building served as a military barracks later when the island became a federal prison it served the prison guards families. Their were children living here even read that if a child dropped a toy out the window a prisoner would drop it in a basket as a child hoisted it up in their baskets. Although Alcatraz was a prison life on the island was in every form all the way to married couples to children laughing and playing. Just behind building 64 the top of the hill is the main cell block. Over 80 guards worked at the prison some took the ferry on over living in San Francisco others found it easier to reside in these apartments. The island had a convenience store, soda fountain, bakery and recreational lounge. If a resident needed groceries or other products they could easily walk down to the docks taking a ferry to the Van Ness Street Pier at the wharf and enjoy San Francisco's markets. Their were at least 300 civilians that resided at this complex some averaged stays of over 8 years. Throughout our galleries you will see many photos of this complex. In addition to building 64 the island also had three other apartment buildings, duplex and four large wooden homes for senior officers.

In 1851 the U.S. Coastguard surveyed "The Rock" to be the permanent grounds for a lighthouse. By 1853 it would be complete and would guy ships coming on into the San Francisco Bay. In 1906 it was damaged in the great quake thus the fifty foot lighthouse had to be reconstructed to the eighty four foot tower you currently see in the photo. Today this is one of the oldest lighthouse sites in the nation with over 150 years of history.  The curved building you see in the photo below is the base of the lighthouse. Behind it is the ruins of the Wardens house. Landmarks such as these are visible across from the bay due to their enormous size.

The guard tower resided within the port of Alcatraz where ferries would come and go as many as 12 times a day back in the day when the island was used as a prison. The tower was manned with armed guards who would stand watch for an escapees it was probably a very boring job since in its 29 years of operation only 36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts six were shot and killed. While the three that escaped were never found 23 were caught. Even though land was only a half of mile across the island the waters were cold so if the tower didn't get you the elements would.

To the left in this photo is building 64 which housed the families of the prison guards and prior to that it was the military barracks. The guard tower resides at the docks of Alcatraz Island so it was not a very far jaunt for its civilians to board a ferry and head on over to the city of San Francisco across the bay!

At the very top of Alcatraz island is the main cell house. Although you will find other photos throughout our galleries of it inside we feel that this is the islands greatest landmarks.  Construction of the main cell block began in 1909 which would house military criminals. In 1934 it was renovated to be made more secure thus it would then be used as a federal prison. This building was divided into four cell blocks. There were a total of 336 cells in the B & C Blocks. There were originally 348 however 12 were removed to make room for stairwells at the end of each cell block. Two of the cells at the end of block C were used as restrooms for the guards. While the D Block contained 36 segregation cells and 6 solitary confientment cells. A block had cells but was very rarely used as often as the other blocks. The highest number of inmates ever recorded was 302 prisoners and the lowest being 222.  Roughly in a 29 year period over 1500 men were imprisoned here. Within the main cell house their was the shower room, library, hospital, visiting room, cafeteria, communications room, wardens office, adminstration offices with fireplaces and even a dungeon. Yes a dungeon which was in the basement below cell block A at one time used to punish escapees. It actually was used however more by the military more so at the time to torture some criminals. The cell blocks in B and C were 5'x9' all cells contained a small sink, cot and a toilett. Each inmate had their own cell. Behind the cells ran tunnels which was a flaw when it came to prisoners using them to escape.

The Warden's House had 17 rooms with very large windows that allowed stellar views of the Golden Gate Bridge and city of San Francisco. It was built in the 1920's and was originally a home of a military prison commander prior to the Wardens residence. James A. Johnston was the first of four wardens to occup this house. Attached to the home was a greenhouse where varius plants grew. The warden had an inmate serve as the gardener and even houseboy to the wardens family. I suppose not much has changed as even today prisoners do have an opportunity to do work for their governors just as much as the wardens of any given prison. Like the Officers Club it was also destroyed in a fire in 1970. Some theorize when the Natives tried to reclaim the island they torched these buildings to make some sort of statement but nobody knows for sure. All that remains today is the homes walls as foliage such as roses are consuming the home.

This massive building was called the Model Industries center which was a place where prisoners could work for money on the island. Its laundry room housed within the building was reported to be the largest on the West Coast of the U.S. providing laundry services for all the local military bases surrounded San Francisco. Their were only two workhouses the first being new industries building which resided to the right of the Model Industry building you see in this photo. It allowed the prisoners a chance to gain work experience for when they were to be released and a chance to serve a sentence with a little less isolation.

This small building is known as the morgue although their were no autopsies performed here when a prisoner died this is where their body ended up. The total number of deaths on the island were a total of 28 individuals. Eight of the the people were murdered by other inmates, fifteen died from natural illnessess and five men committed suicide.

The officers club was built in 1910 and by 1916 it served the Military Officers as well as there families as a recreational facility on "The Rock". The lower floor had a two lane bowling alley, two pool tables and a ping-pong table. It was a place for dancing, holiday and dinner parties. It also had a movie theater inside which was used by the families who lived on the island. Children had lived on Alcatraz they either fished or they went to the Officer Club. If you were 16 or older you were able to come and go as you pleased. If you were under that age you needed to be accompanied by an adult. It also provided the younger kids with a way to make extra money by resetting the pins for about 13 cents per game. The families had a key to the compound where they would enter the compound and leave it freely. Sadly in 1970 it was burned to the ground so what your looking at is a mere shell above.  It is believed that the building was burned when the Native Americans in 1969 tried to claim the island as their own.

The building that you see in front of me was part of the Quartermaster Warehouse and Powerhouse. The warehouse provided tools, fuel and supplies. The two really coincided together as one building was for maintaining the powerhouse while the other one produced the power. Behind the quartermaster building which you can see from the bay in our "The Rock" gallery shows photos of the entire island including these two structures.  The powerplant produced enough to power the entire island which included the apartments, main cell block, industrial buildings, officers building, chapel, school, walkways and anything that needed to operate on electricity. Connected to the powerhouse at one time were tunnels that went underneath a hill used by the army as casements to store mines and torpedos back when the island served the U.S. as a fort.

This is the school house to the right of it is the penitentiary apartments. Before all of this the military used this compound for workshops back in the day when it was owned by the Army.

The structures you see here are known as the residential penitentiary apartments which would be the building to the right. The building to the left was used as a school as children did live on the island even when prisoners were locked up. They also used this building as a military work shop perhaps prior to when Alcatraz was opened as a prison. These buildings you see here are much older then a majority of structures on "The Rock".

In 1857 this Sally Port was built by the Army to be used as an armored gate. The building to the right is the electric shop its not as old. However the structure you are viewing with the tunnel is the oldest building left on the island perhaps the creepiest in my opinion. Formerly, a drawbridge joined the sides of a dry moat so that access could be blocked if needed. Soldiers would guard the entry way to inhibit anyone trying to get past the gate. To the left and the right within the tunnel are gun rooms also used for prison cells during the Civil War to house the captured Confederate agents. One of the rooms contains a confinement area where a prisoner could be kept without being able to climb out of it due to its depth. The gun rooms contained cannons and at the time in its heyday Alcatraz was the most fortified military outpost on the west coast. On top of the guardhouse, the mission style chapel you see was added during the 1920's. Later the chapel was used as a living quarters for housed prison staff. Below is a photo of where the Confederate prisoners were kept it was not very comfortable!

When the Native Americans attempted to take control of the island in 1969 the sign was altered. This is one of the first landmarks you will see as you enter the docks of Alcatraz. The island would become nearly occupied to protest federal policies related to American Indians. The Indians who resided on the island claimed the island by provisions of the Treaty of Fort Laramie of 1868 which stated that all out of use federal lands which were retired or abandoned would be returned to the natives from whom which it was originally acquired from. Many various tribes would occupy the island as they wanted to adopt it as an Indian education, ecology and cultural. center. Most of the natives were San Francisco college students and during the time of it being used to protest many of the structures were burned down. Not only burned down but also vandalized and even spray painted in front of building #64 the residential apartments.

The water tower provided fresh purified water to the prisoners however sanitation and sewage issues would lead to the prisons demise. This photo is borrowed from city data since during our investigation the water tower was being restored thus it was covered with a massive white tarp.
