Exploration 2

The drive out here is just as long as Grantsville hell it might be 10 to 20 miles longer considering that once you enter the dirt road to get to the ghost town its a fairly long trek through this canyon where the main town site resides. We stopped at this gas station it was pretty nasty inside went to use the bathroom some guy was on the toilet trying to have some conversation with me about crapping its like WTF lol. I hate these small NV towns where some people been living in the middle of Timbuktu way to long! Some of them towns just are not welcoming new visitors and with the way I look I sure do not look like I belong in the Styx lol.

I stopped to show Sue this place called the Thunder Mountain Monument which is an old native American site built with all the junk and materials found left behind by the white man. It is actually a pretty cool sit they have stone buildings, massive antlers, cans, bottles etc all used in its construction. We did not visit the site but we took some photos of it from afar. Behind this complex is Thunder Mountain and do not get that confused with the Thunder Mountain expeditions we did in Ca because NV has its own. :)

As we made our way past the Thunder Mountain Monument we made a right down this rural road their were some ranches. This is a free range so cattle cross the road and many of them stay near it as well. We took some photos of the cattle and this time of year their are allot of small calf's no more then a week or two old. Once we took our photos we headed on off to the road which goes up into Star Canyon.

I was not sure what to expect the last time I was here we had gotten stuck in snow, mud and had a second flat tire. To make matters worst the last time I drove out of this place something very large had thrown a piece of wood at my truck. I believe it may have been a bigfoot like creature and its possible this place has thousands of acres of vast wilderness.  I have to say the Spring is very nice everything is lush, vibrant, green, tons of wild flowers, berries and butterflies. It is sort of like being within a world within a world its about as pure as it gets trust me!

As we meandered into the canyon the road was fairly dry everything was in bloom all the way from wild flowers to trees to lush meadows. The creek was flowing vividly and ahead of us we could see Star and Thunder Peak which were covered in snow. The best way to get on top of either peak is rather then hike for miles you can park at the end of the canyon and you can cut your climb down a couple miles. That is my tip for anyone who wants to take on either peak. Since for me this was more about exploring the ghost town and Sheba mine I just took in the scenery did not do much climbing though except deeper into the canyon or to various ruins.

Our first stop was on a hill top of some old stone ruins may have been a miner cabin it is hard to say. This was a very large ghost town but nearly everything is wiped out. You might see some piles of stones, broken glass, rusted pieces of metal roofing etc but allot of it is hidden in the tall grass which grows within the canyon.

Their was a dirt road to the right I pulled off at also a camping area I must had found at least 4 to 5 massive stone foundations built with native rock in the area. Their was many crumbling foundations where you could see the walls just gave way from the heavy weight of the stones. I also found a few miner cabins here and there but nothing as substantial as Grantsville.

Further down the road we continued the road began to narrow we passed some head frame on the other side of the creek. Their was also another lone miner cabin up on a steep hill which I got out to photograph. The last half of mile to a mile is hell though you need 4WD and a high clearance vehicle. The Xterra took us right up to the Sheba Mine or close to it. I probably should not have gone up the remaining road but I wanted to make it easier on Sue because the hike in is a rather steep ravine.

Once I entered the road up to the Sheba it was so narrow that the trees and brush blocked out the entire sun. In fact the road was so narrow I probably scratched the shit out of the Xterra luckily it was insured when something is not insured I generally do not take roads like this but again I wanted Sue to have the offroad experience because over the years we have done many roads like this. The problem I could not turn around the road was to narrow and their were parts of it washed out. If I did not hug the side of the mountain we could have rolled 20' down into the creek. Eventually after climbing boulders and tiers within the road I made it to an area I could park at just a 10 minute walk from the Sheba Mine.

We grabbed our backpacks then we hiked to the Sheba Mine from atop of the debris pile the road continued to go deeper into the canyon but the mine seemed to be blocking any further passage so the rest we would have to take on via foot. To my right was Thunder Mountain and to the left Star Peak both were gorgeous with rock formations, patches of snow, green meadows etc this is the closest I been to either peak consider the Sheba mine is overshadowed by each peak.

The mine entrance into the Sheba is massive big enough to drive a truck into but it does narrow and split off. When we entered the Ovilus did say a few strange things in relation to the mine however what really made our trek worthwhile is when I asked if something could give me a sign its here and down the tunnel to the right I heard what sounded like a man groaning. Sue heard it to we both were like whoa because that was a straight up ghostly experience and from that point on I knew that the mine itself is haunted. The rest of the town might not be but the Sheba Mine was.

Many of the passages were dead ends some of them just led back to the main tunnel system while others were smaller tunnels you had to crawl through. Most of the mine was flooded with water so our feet did get wet. I stepped in this deep puddle of orange rusty like water when I pulled my foot out my sock, shoe and lower cargo pants were completely rusty colored. The Ovilus of course says to me "Dirt" its like no duh lol!

Throughout the mine are mine cart tracks as you near the back entrance out of it their is a series of mine cart tracks that have wood ties its pretty cool and well preserved. I definitely took lots of photos, video and EVPs in the mine. I know Sue ran the Ovilus and my son held the EMF detector which went off a few times to red so I believe we did find out rather quickly we were not alone here. No less it was a really safe and decent mine to explore it had good oxygen and it took us about 20 minutes to see most of the mine with the exception of a few tunnels that just were not worth checking out.

When we came out of the back entrance we were above the main entrance and were standing above it. We would hike back down to the bottom then continue to take the road past the mine following the creek. The road would split right and left. To the left went up towards Star Peak while the road to the right went back into a forestry area where we would have a picnic in the woods. I also would smoke a bowl drink a beer with lunch and lay back in an open meadow counting the clouds it was nice. I did not want to leave here can you blame me lol?

I actually walked up the creek and found a small waterfall. Also in the woods we found a small shack with piles of rusty cans probably beans. We believe we found the old hermits shack you see many decades ago a hermit decided to assault hikers who came up here because he claimed the canyon as his own. Well a fight broke out with the sheriffs and they were forced to shoot him which ultimately led to his death. The shack is a morbid reminder that at one time this hermit spent his last days here in solitude. Its kind of eerie when you think about it but kudos to us for finding it.

After we explored the area a little more on our way back I pointed out two caves on the side of Thunder Mtn. The entrances were side by side both had a pyramid shape so they may have been ventilation shafts for the Sheba Mine but I am not 100 percent sure. I know a few years ago some old ancient caves were discovered near the black rock desert which revealed skeletons so who knows. I could have did the climb but it was steep and honestly it was day three of our journeys so I exhaustion was starting to set in.

Not to far from where I seen those pyramid shaped openings their was this rock I swear on my life the thing looked like a giant penis. Sue and I named it sorry but dirty minds think alike. I know her and I were like WTF at the same time as I was taking photos of Thunder Mountain lol. My son was like hey dad do you run a child friendly site or an adult site. All I could say to him is well I have bunny ears on that does not mean I have to be nice though lol.

When we made it back to the truck Sue guided me a couple hundred feet down the road. She also grabbed some of the brush pulled it to the side because it was rubbing up against both sides of the truck and we were trying to seek minimal damage. Once she washed it we realized it was not as bad as we thought but it still messed up some of the paint it happens as long as were all safe that is all that matters.

I have to say the brakes were good on this Nissan Xterra I was able to climb off of boulders without once ever bottoming out. The climb had to be taken extremely slow down if we went to fast it could have been a disaster and the problem is I could not see where to go because parts of the road were just GONE. After climbing tier after tier down, large rocks, steep slopes etc we were nearly out of the woods. At one point I was up on three wheels I did fix it but I was right on the edge of the creek below and nearly rolled it.

Sue had gotten back in because we thought their were no more major obstacles that is when we encountered half of the road missing I had to really hug the side of the mountain and the vehicle ended up on its two wheels on the passenger side. If I would have not kept going we would have rolling it right down the hillside into the creek but I gunned it and the vehicle landed back on all four wheels. Sue was shouting I understand I scared her but I know in my heart that I had it the entire time. I am confident that I am one of the best offroaders that can take you just about anywhere in the wilderness never once have I ever rolled a vehicle not to say we did not come close but I pulled it off and I did it with one hand on the wheel because as some of you know I am a self producer so I do my own stunts, offroad film footage etc etc.

I did get a bit upset with Sue here I am wearing my bunny ears swearing up a storm for her to just remain calm and quiet lol. On top of that I filmed the entire thing in my video you can see me slowly making my way down this treacherous road then all of sudden when the vehicle tips my camera blurs and once the vehicle lands back on all fours it comes back into focus. Its a pretty good video it will show you how treacherous the road is but its okay to live a little sometimes you need a good scare to get your ass in gear. It is only the wildest if you can get laid, drunk, see the prettiest sunsets, climb the highest peaks and come close to dying all in one day. So I am sure after this experience Sue now understands how often we have to offroad in places just like this to get to ghost towns, peaks, mines and caves.

Sue told me from now on though she trust me and knows not to say anything because she knows I am going to do what I do which is drive. So ill leave it at the fact that all of you are in pretty good hands with me I have spent years driving some of the scariest roads in the country all the way from 13 curves to the NJ Pine barrens in deep water to along high cliffs of the sierras to rugged mountains in the Nevada desert. We came we saw and we defeated Star Canyon with the ghostly encounter in the mine it made this jaunt 110 percent worthwhile!

After climbing off massive boulders and getting back onto to the main canyon road I had gotten out of the truck to breath a little. I took some photos of flowers and their was also massive cocoons along the brush which surrounded the road. You could see caterpillars moving around in the cocoons probably getting ready to morph into butterflies. I really needed a breather my adrenaline was pumping and I just could not believe what we just achieved. That was a class 5 road ill never do it again but it was a good challenge.

I did pass by an older couple with a jeep tried to tell the guy half of the road is washed out and really dangerous. He kind of laughed it off guess his mind was made up he was going up to the Sheba regardless of what I told him. So this goes for anybody DO NOT go past the narrow forest canyon road its a one way trip very narrow easy to roll the vehicle into the canyon and the only place to turn around is at the mine. I know that the heart of a true Nevadan is to explore you can do so safely by hiking the rest of the way in trust me I took the road to the top and to the bottom I came off my wheels and I am a top notch offroader!

We definitely had plenty of time to get home just in time for supper. We would stop up in Lovelock which is in the heart of the Great Basin of NV to take a photo of this massive tree stump. The thing is so large it makes you wonder what kind of tree would grow in NV like this. I mean giant sequoias only grew in the sierras and Ca forest. No less it was a pretty cool site to see at the local gas station! The bathroom was pretty bad crap on the ceiling, big spiders, pee on the walls etc it looked like a tornado came through here but it sure beat talking with some man at another gas station earlier about him taking a shit lol so yeah!

Getting home was nice because I needed the rest the following morning we would have our final journey and are most difficult one which was a trek up to a place in the high sierras called Showers Lake. This place is for the advanced mountaineer although I figured id give Sue a fair shot at it because honestly it is one of the top 10 most beautiful locations in California really so that is why I wanted to take her.

Peace,
Lord Rick

A close up one of the caves we discovered it may or may not go very far back but it is big enough for a mountain lion or a bigfoot like creature that might reside in the Humboldt Range which has some forest and lush areas.

Close up of twin cave systems both triangular it was a very odd find. I know we should have climbed to the top but I was on empty hiking and driving for hundreds of miles prior to our visit here so my tank was to empty to reach them.

This is a photo of both of the dens or caves we found. The lower one is enlarged in the photo to the above left so you can see it has depth. The much larger gave appears to be at the peak and is also a large triangular entrance. They could be old claims mining went on above the Sheba Mine or they might actual be native American caves high up near the peak. More then likely they serve for a hungry bear or mountain lion its very steep terrain to get to them but no less pretty cool finds.

This is the hermits Den its collapsed but we found bottles of Crisco with urine in them and hundreds of bean cans. Someone lived here in this makeshift wood and metal shed big enough maybe for one persont to sleep. More then likely the same hermit who built this out of place collapsed structure also was the same one who had a shoot out with the police and ended up being killed near here. I am assuming the hermit was refusing to leave the canyon claiming this as his property which led to violence.

Sue actually spotted this circular impression mkissing out of the hillside. Its completely circular.

Another angle of the photo not much folioge grows within in it its possible this was a mining claim at one time.

Just another closeup of the Hermits Den its kind of an eerie find hidden in the canyons woods to come across.

The tunnel in front of us has a very thick layer of ectoplasm I have other photos in this same area that reveal nothing.

This face may be nothing just a rock that is why I will not attest that it is a real ghost. Yes the mine is haunted I heard a man in the mine and I did get a few odd EVPs from within. However it is plausible to say the mine is haunted and may its ghosts still linger around these old tunnels of the Sheba Mine.

I do not put much faith into orbs however this odd green one has a smiley face almost like its teasing me. The paranormal has a way of doing what it wants when it wants. Whether it appears as a ball of energy or a full out apparition or even just a floating head. So lets just leave this anomaly as strange and a bit out of place. Form your own opinions if its paranormal or just a fluke!
The first three photos are of bean cans even a bottle of Crisco filled with urine. Someone did not just camp here they lived in Star Canyon for awhile more then likely the Hermit who was attacking hikers and was shot by police thus this is kind of like a an old crime scene. Besides all the cans from someone living in the canyon we found a set of old bed springs. The make shift shack collapsed on it but at one time these bed springs were slept on by a man who lost his life hours later leaving behind such remnants to rust away and succumb to the elements.

I found some bones deep inside the Sheba mine probably from an Elk or Deer. Which means at one time or another a predator used the mine as a den or area to feed in. Can you imagine your in a dark mine and all of sudden you come face to face with a predator like a mountain lion? Its an eerie reminder of the dangerous work we do being that its all volunteer work its also very risky what we do so next time you see the photo just try to imagine what we have to go through to bring our viewers the evidence, photos, audio, videos, stories and research.
Video Evidence

When I was hiking deep in Star Canyon we found these two cave that were pyramid shaped. They sit up on the steep side of the mountain so they could be used by cougars maybe black bear that roam the mountain range. They also might be mining claims one must wonder. I call them wildman's dens because their are twin dens and something in 2013 did attack my vehicle something that may have lived at one time in these very caves you see.

This is an 18 minute video of pure terror as I carefully take the Xterra all the way down devils ladder ledge after ledge. Their are parts of the road that are washed out one wrong move and the whole vehicle could roll over the side into the creek below. As you can see its so narrow the branches are scraping both sides of the vehicle and at the end the camera shuts off on its own as Sue is screaming because we nearly rolled it or should I say we were only on two wheels but this is the true nature of being an explorer to push your limits and we did we succeeded on one of the toughest wagon roads in central Nevada.

This is actually not part of the town its a makeshift shed built out of wood and alluminum probably by the hermit who lived here in the 1970s. You can seen cans of beans, Crisco bottles of urine and even some old bed springs. But the real dark truth to the story is the hermit that lived here attacked people and one day the police came up to his den to confront him where a shootout took place. That hermit died from gunfire so its a bit of a morbid spot this is where this man took his last breaths and lived.
