Leviathan Peak is as alluring as it is mysterious almost as if its a lost hidden world tucked away in the sierras near Lake Heenan. It is a rather secluded part of the Toiyabe National Forest residing at about 7000' in a heavily woodsy area.

Mining began here around 1863 give or take and it was the Comstock Miners that started it. They built a small mining camp which houses them in wooden cabins which can still be seen today. To get to the cabins is a long road in a dense forest although continuing pass them will take you through a 21 mile rugged road that very few people ever get to journey on. This road was used by miners for decades so imagine if a 4x4 has difficulty treading it how hard it was for miners in there ox wagons back in the day.

The mine itself which further below you can see from above as I stood on a ridge encompasses about 250 acres of land. Its an open pit type of mine about 400 feet deep so looking down into the mine is a pretty amazing site from above. The mining of over 500 tons of copper sulfate was removed from this pit between 1863 till about 1870 which would be used for silver ore refining.

For many years the site remained abandoned afterwards however in or around 1935 the mine was reopened by the Calpine Corp. who then leased it out to the Texas Sulfur Company who extracted sulfur roughly about 5000 tons of it. As copper sulfate was removed from the site in the 1800's all that was left was sulfur which does have its uses however mining for it underground here became extremely hazardous so the mining halted in 1941. By 1945 another company called Siskon Mining Corp. bought it however very little mining was ever done.

In 1951 the Anaconda Copper Mining Company purchased the open pit mine who extracted the sulfur to be used as ore processing in the Anaconda Copper Mine. They excavated about 500,000 tons of sulfur from 1953 till about 1962. The problem with that is that it upset the balance of nature as acid began to contaminate Leviathan and Aspen Creek. These creeks join with Mountaineer Creek which forms Bryant Creek and eventually empties into the Carson Rivers east fork near Washoe Indian Falls.

After the contamination and damage was done the property was sold to the founders of the Alpine Mining Enterprise. Its owners were Zella N. Mann and William Chris Mann who was the Alpine County Clerk. Today supposedly the mining pit remains abandoned and there have been attempts to clean up the contamination caused by the years of mining here. It is an amazing site as you can clearly see entire mountains been removed or stripped of its minerals.

There is a very eerie dismal feeling back here as a paranormal investigator you learn to sense things. Something is not right about this place and nothing will change my mind. The woods are very eerie....the pit is silent with machines hundreds of feet sitting in desolation and you constantly feel watched. This is why I decided to take readings and EVP's particularly around the cabin sites which sit at the mine entrance. However despite the damage done here it is a very scenic area great for hiking and exploring.

Also there are many roads that go offbeat trails one of them takes you to some hot springs and they are safe to take a dip in if you decide to do so. However do not drink or eat any of the fish within a couple miles of this mine it could be hazardous even though their are claims that the contamination is gone. I heard otherwise that sometimes it mixes with metals the acid creating even more toxins which leak into the creeks.

Our team would like to work with this area more and we just might overtime. There is a beautiful dirt road that takes you along the peak here with great views of Heenan Lake. Heenan Lake is a tributary of the Carson river and is used for irrigation earlier in the 1900's. It was reconstructed in 1929 and was rock filled. I believe they enlarged it a little more as at one time it was not 600' in length. When it drains it irrigates roughly 4 square miles surrounding it.
