Subject: Our Second Adventure To The Eureka Plumas Mine Camp

I wanted to visit here in the fall mainly because I was going to see Jamison City but I figured id stop here and refilm everything that was lost on my first trek here. During my first trek I filmed this place and later lost the footage not sure where it went maybe deleted off my hard drive by accident.

I spent most of my time at the Mohawk Mill since this place is falling apart an in peril in a few more years its not going to be standing the wood is dry rotted but the old iron machinery still resides within and that will outlast the mill someday. I actually had gotten to see more of the mill my second time then my first time.

While I walked around the camp I could not help notice some artifacts that use to sit on the grounds were now gone. Some structures had allot of warping going on and the paint was really faded. The roofing did not look that great I get it storms pass through all winter but these places are so underfunded which is not good because they wont last and our site may be one of the only ones to find something like this is great detail.

I did go above the mill the tunnel entrance was collapsed it was just a giant cavern and in the back was the tunnel with a grate or gate made of iron. The gate use to be outside almost as you peer in but now wood beams were holding up the entrance as I went about 30' back on in something I did not have to do during my first visit.

I took a trail off in the woods came back around to the camp it was nice came back around to the assay office and eventually crossed the road to the Moriarty House. I missed this house last time but it sits in the overgrowth across the road from the camp with a white picket fence and you can picnic here there is a bench. This is the home where a little girl had gotten ill and died her ghosts is said to haunt the home and town up the street.

I did not stop in Johnsville really fast too just to do a little filming and stop at the cemetery to try to find her grave. I saw it the first time did not see it a second time but Johnsville is a really beautiful cozy mountain town its always dead you never see anyone. But I wanted to take some photos make a few stops then id make my way to the lake.

I did not make it to the lake the road had a gate you use to be able to drive to the peak almost and park right on the lake. There is also a mill up here I felt sad because I wanted to refilm the peak and the lake but no way to get to it and the mill is along the way up. Not sure why they closed the gate less forest rangers less funding etc so maybe they just are not maintaining the area anymore or are worried people will get stuck up there.

I would have loved to go back to the lake the road is worth filming so unlike my first time I did not get a chance a second time to get footage so that footage is lost forever. But the lake use to be a prime recreation area for the locals and miners back in the day. They would go skiing up here and take the tram lifts up and down from the Eureka Mine behind the Mohawk Mill. I saw the tram in ruins on this trek just piles of gears, metal and cables not far from the mine entrance.

My main reason for coming up here though would be to go to Jamison City its another sister mining camp a mile or two away from the Plumas Eureka Camp you can take the trail I was on it splits on foot to reach it or you can go down the road and just take this dirt road to get to it. I drove to it because time is limited it gets darker earlier up here this location is surrounded by Eureka and Washington Peaks so once that sun goes behind them it gets dark fast and I only had a couple hours to explore left.

I spent a good amount of my time just walking around the Mohawk so much has changed but my stop was all about filming for our viewers since we lost that footage just wish I could have gotten to the lake and saw the mammoth mill ruins. I am scared that this mine camp will suffer loss in the future its a high fire risk area, storms are very strong such as 80mph gust in the winter and the funding is not there. When I first visited here this place was in great shape its not anymore so that is the downside to it all and I wish I had the old footage you would understand.

But I am one of the very few that did get to roam around the mill and its amazing all tiered along the hill side but the machinery is iconic to. At one time you probably could hear the ore crusher stamps, bells and whistles from Johnsville. Johnsville is very preserved there is maybe one or two buildings that are abandoned but everything else has been restored.

What would Jamison City reveal to us as I left Johnsville and the Plumas Eureka Mine Camp behind? I could not wait because I waited years to see it which was one of the main reasons why I drove out here from our autumn trip just to explore it!
