What started off as a pass used by the Washoe Natives later became a wagon trail once traversed by Fremont and his guide Kit Carson in 1844. Back in the day route 88 also known as Kit Carson Pass was called just that "The Pass". Within the pass are places such as Red Lake, Hope Valley, Tragedy Springs, Woodford's and of course Camp Kit Carson. Fremont never did name this place however he did name the river that runs through Camp Kit Carson and a good portion of the Pass. This river would be called The Carson River.

Carson was an amazing man he was an Indian Fighter and involved in the American-Mexican War. But he also was a hunter, scout, guide and a friend to many. Allot of the area we are currently based has allot of this mans name attached to it. You have locations like the Carson Valley and another name that stands out Carson City.

Later only gold seekers called this location Carson Trail however it was not till 1848 that a Mormon Battalion built a wagon trail that would cross well over the High Sierras. By 1849 it was rumored that thousands had made the journey. In 1849 some called it the East Pass Of The Carson Route. Prior to the road being built this pass was redirected towards a higher pass until modern roads were built however it was allot easier to traverse this route then it would be lets say Donner or Ebbetts Pass.

There is a place up near Camp Kit Carson have not visited it yet but his name was carved onto a tree during his travels. Today you can still see the date and name Kit Carson etched onto the tree itself. Fremont felt that the Carson Pass was much more treacherous and higher up then the south Pass in the Rocky Mountains. Very few people realize it but the Sierras are a massive mountain range and for those that crossed them not everyone made it out of them. Some people froze to death just as the Washoe warned Fremont and Kit Carson that during the winter food is scarce. Due to this fact at one time Kit Carson had to eat his own horses, mules and there dogs.

The camp that you see in this update like many along the pass was also named after Kit Carson. Its a good example of truly what the sierras is about. The Carson Rivers rapids run right through the camp. This also goes in addition to the high cliffs and series of rock formations found throughout the Toiyabe National Forest which eventually transitions into the El Dorado National Forest as the pass comes on out into Jackson Ca and traverses away from the sierras through flat plains into Stockton Ca.

The camp itself has allot of naturally glacier formed rock dens which were formed from rocks bigger then cars were stacked on top of one another. The camp only stays open a couple months during the year in 2011 however it would only stay open for a couple days. The caretakers and ranger told me that the area sometimes needs to be logged as it is extremely overgrown. Our first campsite here was between giant granite boulders with cliffs behind us and the river below us. Hell my first camping trip in the high sierras was here unless you account for Indian Grinding Rock which is another camp located off Route 88 however further due west where the terrain is less harsh and not as mountainous.

It was more then likely that at one time Kit Carson hunted, fished and camp at some point in time near this location. Unlike most camps this one is very small and nestled back into the woods along the river. Its a place where you can fish, hike, swim and enjoy good food over a campfire. It also is a place that I believe Bigfoot may be present. I did allot of scouring in this area climbing to places nobody ever goes only to find a giant track hidden up along the base of the cliffs that surround the camp. Not to mention my dog who has a very good keen sense of eye sight and smell kept staring up into the woods behind our camp which go up onto a very steep hillside and stopping at the base of a cliff. On the other side of those cliffs is a vast wilderness far away from mans reaches and hidden enough for Bigfoot to continue to thrive remaining elusive.

Carson Pass is the Sierra Crest mountain pass over which State Route 88 crosses. The historic pass was a point on the Carson Trail during the California Gold Rush and was used for American Civil War shipping to California until the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad. The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the Carson Pass summit, which has California Historical Landmark #315 at CA 88 postmile 6.09 where Kit Carson carved his name into a tree.^[1]

History

The 1844 Frémont Expedition turned south from northern Nevada. When encamped at Nevada's Carson Valley on January 31, 1844; guide Kit Carson suggested the expedition detour west during the winter conditions to Sutter's Fort in California for supplies. Local Washoe Indians told them of a route through the mountains, but warned them not to proceed through the snow. Frémont duly ignored the advice and directed the group westward. The Washoe were right in that they would not be able to find food or game, and they ended up resorting to eating dog, horse, and mule just to survive. On February 14, Frémont and his cartographer Charles Preuss made it up Red Lake Peak and became the first white men to see Lake Tahoe in the distance. On February 21, the expedition made it through the now-named Carson pass west of Red Lake and arrived at Sutter's Fort on March 6 with no fatalities.^[2]

In 1849, Mormons built a wagon trail (Carson Trail) through the Carson Pass from Sly Park, California to the Carson Valley. The road was later extended through the Carson Spur around the north shore of Silver Lake, and southwest to Jackson (California State Route 88 through the pass uses this southern route).^{[citation
