When Gold was first discovered in nearby Murphy's in 1848
the diggings were dry and water was scarce. In fact their was not enough water
available to wash the gold out of the gravel that was mined. This led to the
forming of the Union Water Company in 1852 which would bring water from Angels
Creek and the North Fork of the Stanislaus River. It started off with just a
few ditches and flumes constructed with picks, shovels and mules. But eventually
a small dam and reservoir would be built. That way they could use natural
energy to power a sawmill so that lumber could be cut for the flumes. The lumber
could be floated down various flumes and ditches to construction sites. With
that being said the Union Reservoir came to be by 1853 built by the Union Water
Company.
The water would be used for placer and hard rock mining operations but it also provided water down to Murphy's, Angels Camp and many other times. But it would not be till the later 1880's when the Utica Mining Company took over the Union Water Company and ending up enlarging the Union Reservoir in 1901. The company constructed the Utica Reservoir in 1905 as a way to augment its water resources and provide water and electricity to all the various mining operations in the area. In a sense both reservoirs are sister bodies of water separated by a couple hundred feet if that. Today both reservoirs are owned and operated by the Northern California Power Agency. The reservoirs are used to regulate water flowns for downstream power generation. The first powerhouse was built in 1895 in the area on Angels Creek by the Utica Company so that the first electricity could be provided to the Utica Mine. Then another powerhouse came to be above Murphys that would supply many of the mines, mills and local residences with their first electricity that arrived in Caliveras County. Therefore, both reservoirs were important bodies of water because you could control the release of water which led to converting it into power downstream. This project I put together was mainly to cover these twin reservoirs since they are separated by merely a couple hundred feet. Utica covers about 233 acres while Union 218 acres. Most of the water here is diverted into Spicer Reservoir before its released back into the Stanislaus via Highland Creek near Highland Lakes. Below I posted a map so you can see the reservoirs in the area all of them I have been to or done bigfoot research at. The Union and Utica stand at about 6,800' while Spicer is a little lower at 6,400' not to far away from Bear Valley. Every area I have gotten bigfoot reports in or have found some kind of evidence. I attribute this to the fact that their is quite a bit of water, shorelines, seclusions and unexplored terrain in the region. Which is why I wanted to add the Utica to my bucket list because I felt it was a good focal point since we did many of the areas surrounding it in the past. Spicer, Utica and Union along with nearby Lake Alpine are all part of a linked storage system which provides drinking water and hydroelectric power to the area. However the New Spicer Meadow Reservoir replaced the older reservoir in 1989 and is the largest of all the lakes. The Union Reservoir use to be much smaller till 1901 when it was enlarged. That same company that enlarged the Union did construct the Utica a few later which mainly was used to extend mining operations in the area. Even Lake Alpine was built in 1889-1892 by the Utica Gold Mining Company so all the reservoirs in this area were simply sister bodies of water all serving the same person. In 1946 many of the reservoirs and canals were sold to Pacific Gas & Electric then the 1980s the Calaveras County Water District and Northern California Power Agency took over them and begin there work on new Spicer Meadow Reservoir. Old Spicer was constructed in 1929 and in 1995 the Utica Power Authority was formed to oversee the water deliver to be used by local water agencies in the area. While the Union and Utica are not the largest in the area they are twin scenic reservoirs worth camping at in my opinion. Plus their are some smaller lakes in the area you can hike to like Summit, Mud and Elephant Rock Lakes. When I camp I always try to hit as many lakes as I can because I am looking for evidence of bigfoot and that as a cryptozoologist increases my chances of finding some. Because more shoreline means more mud for tracks but also more drinking water for these type of creatures which I believe are prevelant up here.
