The Highland Lakes area may just be one of the most beautiful camping and hiking areas in all of the entire Sierra Mtn. Range. Generally the area stays snow covered most of the year however for about 3 of those months the region is full of bright green foliage and endless wild flowers.  Some have even compared this region similar to the Swiss Alps considering that most peaks ranging as high as 12k are snow capped most of the year.

The area is home to many old cabins, homesteads and even a place called Milk Ranch which is operated by the Carley/Raggio family. The lakes are unique in the fact that the upper one drains into the Mokelumne River while the lower lake drains into the Stanislaus River. Perhaps this makes it very unique since two wilderness areas collide one being the Mokelumne the other being the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness areas.  Both are very vast and are known for its Sasquatch activity thus making the Highland Lakes region a focal point for our research.

You can reach multiple trail heads in this area which I believe are some of the finest trails you can hike on in this country. You have the Highland Lakes, Tryon Meadow and Pacific Crest Trail heads. The lakes are not very large but are surrounded with scenic views of Hiram and Folger Peaks. Both peaks overshadow the two lakes so thus we made expeditions to each of the summits to put everything into perspective for our viewers.

The area was first put to use by the Milk Ranch Cow Camp their are still signs today of its existence such as the outhouse, barn, old wooden post, troughs etc. Its not uncommon to see cattle running through the woods or up into the mountains. Their are many meadows the cattle can be found such as Bear, Spicer, Tryon and Gardner Meadows. In my opinion it is a bit of an oddity to see such cattle roaming in the woods compared to the ones we are use to seeing grazing in pastures.

Winter in this region is harsh allot of the moisture collects on the Pacific Coast and San Francisco area thus forming clouds. By the time the clouds hit this region they cool down releasing precipitation which generally turns into heavy snowfall and rain in the warmer months. Their are many creeks in the region that can be found hiking throughout various canyons and valleys. In turn this is a focal point for allot of wildlife surrounding them.

During the Pleistocene era glaciers poured out in all directions from Highland Lakes forming steep canyons in the region. When these glaciers melted it formed rivers, creeks and quite a few lakes in the region. Highland Lakes is not the only two bodies of water in the area as along some of the hiking trails one can find quite a few smaller lakes nestled deep amongst the evergreen forest.

In 1864 their was a small community called Highland City which was established on the southeast side of Upper Highland lake. Their also was many mines although I have not found them yet. The community did not last long due to its seclusion and rough weather that came through here it just was to harsh to continue to thrive here. You really couldnt grow crops and the winters were so horrifying that you couldnt get in or out of this region to get supplies.  The homes were built out of logs and had stone fireplaces. The stone foundations remain today not all but some. I believe that the Tryon Meadows area is where most of the community was based then later others built cabins and outhouses which still stand today but are in deplorable shape.

The forest service in 1920 did survey of the area laying out two lots for cattle operations. One of those included was the Tryon cabin and its outbuildings you can see them by clicking the Tryon Meadows button further above.  Since then the region has become one of the most pristine camping areas for nearly a century in the Stanislaus National Forest.

The lakes sit in a massive alpine valley and at about 8,600 in elevation making them some of the highest elevated lakes in this part of the United States. We definitely hope to explore this area a few times in our quest for the truth. It would be no wonder Bigfoot would be found here after all the area remains in desolation most of the year not to mention the abundance of berries and wildlife it would be easy for a creature like this to survive unseen for many years.
