When I heard that the HIghland Lakes area was like a Lost Paradise I really wanted to see it for myself. I love taking trips like these because there is so much to see whether your into nature or your a paranormal enthusiast like myself in search of the unknown.

Like every location we visit this one would turn out to be one hell of an adventure it always ends up that way. It was 911 thought I would do a memorial exploration. The skies were overcasts and usually what that means is we are in for some horrific weather especially as they thickened as we made our way into the heart of the sierras.

I had a few goals on this trip one would be to visit Hermit Valley which we never were able to do the other was to stop at Chalmers Cemetery outside of Kongsberg do a little filming. Highland Lakes however would be just a perk to our day and when we arrived it would offer us many surprises.

Making our way through Ebbetts Pass is always exciting I stopped at this 100' waterfall near the side of the road it was amazing. As we proceeded through the pass the views of forested canyons were amazing I couldn't way to see this area it truly is gods country here.
Highland Lakes

The road to the lakes is fairly decent there is a few grooves and rough patches but for the most part it takes you through a wonderful forest following Highland Creek. At times it seemed as if the road would never end. I found on my way up the road a few hidden camp sites near the creek just something to bare in mind if I choose to do a Bigfoot Campout here.

When we arrived it opened up to a big meadow called Tryon where we could see a barn off in the distance and a series of old log cabins. It was very obvious that at one time a ranch or homestead existed up in this region.

The peaks had snow on them two of them look worthy of hiking up on maybe in the future one being Folgers the other being Hiram Peaks. The meadow was gorgeous lots of wild flowers it was very green and vibrant. This area only stays this way 3 months a year.

We started our journey at the old ranch there was a small creek that ran past the barn with an old bathtub used as a trough. There were also allot of stickers I had to take a photo of my sneakers just to show you guys how bad they are up here around the ranch. Tammy took some photos of flowers there was also these berries growing all over I bet the bears come around here.

Across from the barn under a series of large trees and shade was a series of cabins. There were a few outhouses, screen house, homestead and cabins. There was also a larger home up on the hill side probably a summer home someone owns and a family was outdoors enjoying it. Unfortunately you could only enjoy this place for a short time snow here can get to over 20' which is nearly impossible to traverse unless you ski. The cabins were a bonus most of them appeared to be historical but based on the outhouses conditions you could tell some of them been up here for years.

We would then make our way up to lower Highland Lake which the road takes you right up to the shore then it splits off in different directions. We encountered the start of some rain in the middle of walking around the lake shore so we ran back to the truck to do some offroading till the weather subsided.

As we made our way around the lower lake by the time we arrived at the upper Highland Lake a major hail storm hit us. There was hail bigger then quarters pummeling the truck. I was filming so I was getting hit in the face and all sorts of shit lol.

We parked up at Highland Lake there was a few campers people were inside hiding in there tents and campers. We parked at the Highland Lakes trail which takes you up into the Carson Iceberg Wilderness area which by the way is one of my favorite places in all of the sierras maybe because allot of it stays snow capped all year around even in the summer time.

The weather was not getting any better it started to rain then thunder then hail then stop then start up again. In between the rain I managed to walk around a good portion of the upper lake and sadly all the tracks that may have been caused by Sasquatch were being washed away so I couldn't even measure them because they looked like mud patties.

After the rain started I sat in the truck some more so did other hikers honestly I am tired of my gear being ruined. We constantly have to replace our gear and our members just do not donate. If people donated a dollar a month that would cover our equipment cost but our last donation has been over a year ago so I waited for the weather to let up a bit.

I hiked down the HIghland Trail for about a quarter of a mile along this volcanic rock which came out into this massive canyon and forested area. I did not hike further in however to my left was the lakes headwaters draining into this lush canyon. There was also a waterfalls I almost fell in as I tried to get close to film it. One wrong move meant a 10' fall into the water slide of death.

We decided to head on off my son and I picked some flowers for the girlfriend to surprise her and trust me I risked my life for one of those flowers lol. But I wanted to gather for her a surprise bouquet so that she could put them in a vase when we got home.

We decided to spend the rest of this exploration offroading where it took us around the lake through the woods and to this private little area where you can camp at. This area is unique because it overlooks the lake below and there is allot of large trees. There was also a trail nearby we found and some other cool sites. I really would love to camp up here sometime maybe do an all out 3 day exploration where we can hike, bbq, fish and conduct paranormal work.

Leaving Highland Lakes was a bit sad you always hate to head away from peaceful beauty but I know we will come back here again.

As we made our way back for home through Ebbetts Pass we hit ice and snow. Tammy was pretty scared because there are no guard rails at a portion of the pass where it nearly is a single lane road. We ended up a few times sliding around because the hail, snow, ice and rain were all mixing together. The entire pass was nearly blanketed with at least an inch of white slippery ice and I did take video footage of it.

I did make a stop at Chalmers Cemetery and some cavern I found near the road across from the river. I always am searching for new strange places so sometimes ill get out search them for future excursions to make sure they are safe or if they are worth planning out a future exploration at them.

When we finally made our way back near my home I stopped up in Markleeville which is a historical semi ghost town up in the Toiyabe National Forest where we had lunch in the truck near the creek along this secret road that I found. Markleesville has many dirt roads some go off to mines, creeks, peaks etc I love it up here lots of wildlife everytime I tour the area.

Heading home was a bit odd I didn't feel like I had done enough then again I never do. I would spend nearly everyday exploring if I could that is what makes me true to the work that I do. When I arrived home it hadn't even really rained everything was dry so definitely a different climate in the sierras then in the valley below them.

I look forward to returning here next year by then maybe we will have other hikers and campers who want to do this. Then we can have a blast exploring this vast region. Until next time!
