Tonopah Nevada

The first night I was in Tonopah I did not get to see many historic sites or haunted locations. I did have the opportunity to stay at the Jim Butler Hotel which is supposedly haunted but was not happy with the room. You see every time I been to Tonopah I was just passing through or it was to dark to see anything. I have had in the past seven years gotten two speeding tickets through here both times they were not my fault. I was hauling very large heavy moving trucks and when you come into this town its all downhill so heed my words do not go over 25 mph even if its 5 mph over they will throw the book at you here. The cops are bored and have nothing better to do then entrap those passing through. Its hard to believe that years ago Nevada did not have a speed limit this is because there are so very few towns and most of the roads are rural. I have no issue speeding through the vast desert of Nevada but once you get into town there are cops everywhere and all day long people get speeding tickets so some words of advice.

The old air field at one time was part of an Air Force base built at the end of WWII and through the cold war. It was a test range for experimental craft also a radar station during those times. As a matter in fact Chuck Yeager had his own hangar here and that was the main reason for my visit here. When you pull into the airbase their is three hangars all very large made out of wood. Trust me you will never see hangars like this they are a rarity and very few are standing in the country today. The air base is huge there are many dirt roads that at one time were streets that led to barracks, armories, hangars, warehouses, weapon depots, school, post exchange, crash stations, supply buildings, storage tanks for water, runways, aprons, head quarters and range facilities.

When you drive through the base all that remains today is a few old wooden hangars, a chimney from where a hangar once resided and allot of concrete foundations. One of the runways is in use its part of the today's Tonopah airfield as their are only two ways to travel here. The first being the automobile the second being planes due to the remoteness of the area. Back in the day though it was the stagecoach that came through here and eventually the Goldfield Tonopah Railroad. The base at one time was one of the more majestic military installations of its day however today when you drive down the dirt roads all of what once is long gone or has been demolished. I learned a long time ago that old military bases like this tend to have a ghost story or two. Lets face it quite a few soldiers died on this airfield testing experimental aircraft. As far as anti gravity or super sensitive covert craft you may want to look towards Area 51 which is not to far away from Tonopah.

The airfield is extremely spread out in different places many of the roads are not maintained so there was snow, mud and potholes. I drove past this house when two dogs attacked the vehicle good thing I was not hiking here probably would have gotten bit. The one dog kept leaping at my window on the drivers side the other one was trying to nip at the front of the bumper. I just kept it rolling and the moment they stepped around the other side I sped off really quick. I wish people would realize that you cant have your dogs guarding a public place. Allot of explorers come out here alone just to see Chuck Yeager's hangar. The drive out to the hangar was slow going the hangar sits on the edge of the air base which in turn sits in this vast expanse surrounded by 360 degrees of mountains.

I eventually would arrive at the hangar someone else pulled up behind me it was an older gent he had a pretty nice camera. He was very scared to even walk near the hangar or inside of it perhaps he thought he might get busted for trespassing or that it probably was not okay to be there. This is not the case the hangar is wide open and you can walk around the airbase nobody will mess with you since 90 percent of this place has been abandoned. When I started to explore he eventually had gotten out and explored with me haha we both ended up entering Chuck's hangar together. Yeager was the man who tested allot of the Air Forces new prototypes and he was the first human to break the sound barrier. I also believe he tried flying the militaries first hovering disc or UFO like craft which at the time was not very successful. Although it had lift it was not efficient and could not fly very fast. Other men who tested out aircraft here did not make it some died however Yeager lived to tell about it and in a way was one of the first living test crash dummies.

The hangar was very large it could hold a decent sized WWII bomber inside if it had too. Most of the windows were gone there was also a ladder hanging made out of wood at the entrance above where the hangar doors would be. I found a workshop inside and the room had remnants of a blast furnace or at least some kind of heating system. It would appear they loaded coal into a furnace where then the smoke would be released via smokestack while the heat generated from it would keep the hangars toasty in the winter months. The men would build these maintain and build these craft inside the hangar and back then the Tonopah area had allot more snow. The hangar had a couple small rooms but the general area was very wide open with a few power boxes on the walls including strangely a television satellite mounted on the outside of it. It appeared that quite a few people vandalized the hangar and glass was everywhere from broken beer bottles. People just have absolutely no respect for these historic sites this is where American military history was born. Did you even know that Tonopah is home to the Stealth Bomber? Seriously!

I enjoyed my time on the base I even seen a Learjet take on off tried to film it but it was to late so I know that the runway here is still in use for small commercial craft. The airbase is a bit scattered you have a few houses, warehouses, construction trucks, small buildings and of course remnants of what was scattered in between the Joshua Trees growing in the desert. I am sure I did not see everything but I did take some photos and footage of some of the concrete foundations including this vault like structure and chimney. I cannot say what each foundation or what the ruins were at the time but it appears that nature is consuming the air base and its slowly being demolished little by little except for those gorgeous monolithic wood hangars. I did visit the other two but both were fenced off was just glad that Chuck Yeagers was not but its in peril and the best way I can show you guys this place is just to post the footage in the future so you can see it for yourselves. I really visited here to show my son something really cool and he seemed to like it once I had gotten him out of the vehicle to explore. Its hard to believe but during the cold war you could nearly see the nuclear bombs being tested near here probably from this very airport a bit dismal if you ask me but no less it is still a part of the regions history.

I arrived back into Tonopah nearing sunset and had worked it into my plans to conduct an investigation of the two cemeteries as dusk was setting on in. I wanted to give our viewers something they could cherish this work that we do is done with my own hands. I do not do this for fame or money as a matter in fact I have invested my life into exploring the unknown. During my journeys I come across things that would be in your nightmares. Do I come across the paranormal all the time? No but the more places I journey and the more I see ends up being the more I experience. Therefore the cemeteries are both relevant to Tonopah's early history. I would park at the Clown Motel where I had an encounter with Ronald freaking McDonald! Nobody helped me with the cemetery this investigation was for me and me alone therefore I grabbed my pack then headed on in.

The burial grounds are split into two different areas the first being the old cemetery the second being the Masonic graveyard. Many of the burials here are that of children as yes a plague did break out in Tonopah nobody knows whatever caused it. Then again over the years many illnesses took the lives of many and were gone as fast as the wind. Many of the interments here are that of children but also many of the miners who lost there lives like when a fire broke out in the Belmont Mine killing 17 men. The Belmont and Desert Queen were both mines that were connected however one was an upcast the other one was a downcast. These were some of the richest silver mines in the world today you can visit the head frames and shafts to these mines which I did the next day.

When you go through the parking lot you walk down these stairs and there is this giant chain link fence around the cemetery. The one thing that stands out here is most of the graves do not have stones but rather wooden crosses or grave markers. Some of the wood is hand carved such as the names written on them or bevels others are just so worn you cannot see who is interred here. On occasion you may seen a marble or granite stone but unlike many of the older wild western graveyards this one has so very few which I found strange. Back in the day Masons and other fraternal members took pride in gravestones and treated them as works of art. These groups were based all over these Nevadan mining towns therefore many cemeteries had so many beautiful gravestones like the ones found to the north of Tonopah in Austin Nevada back last year ago. However the old Tonopah Cemetery seemed to be more of a poor mans burial ground and I just do not understand why considering how wealthy many of the mine owners were in this area during its hey day.

Many of the wood enclosures were collapsing I also seen a few wrought iron enclosures while vandalism was limited I did see a couple broken stones and crosses. The old cemetery has this giant area in the center with no graves at all I am assuming based on what I read that some of them are unmarked or perhaps vandals removed them. I cannot say for sure but its just this odd big open area as crosses and graves surround it. The cemetery is not in the best of shape brush grows in it and these annoying weeds we call in Nevada known as goat heads which carry a small seedling with thorns on it sharp enough to pierce your skin with little effort. Surrounding the cemetery you can see allot of shanty shacks and small trailers where locals live. If you look in the distance you can see the mines up on the side of Mount Oddie named after the governor of Nevada who once lived in Belmont and ended up relocating to Tonopah because of his financial interest in the silver mines. I would later the next day be below those mines and up below those dump piles as I explored old Tonopah or where its mining district was the heartbeat of this town! One can imagine that during a funeral the miners who attended were able to see the very mines they worked at or where this individual may have accidentally died in all from within this burial ground.

I could not take proper EMF readings here there were power lines around it and it just seemed like the cemetery needs more love. You have so much high brush around it and junk near the fences I do think that the town should try to put in some grass and sprinklers perhaps a few trees. I know these things cost money believe me but these were human beings who braved this frontier and some of them lost it all including their lives! Its sad because the cemetery does not seem very well visited its a place for ghost hunting enthusiast to over embellish how haunted and freaky the Clown Motel is next to the cemetery. I did not get either vibe but I will say this some of the people hanging out at that hotel seemed a bit creepy or looked inbred. I am sorry but it has to be said I am sure all the time they get nuts that want to stay at this hotel just passing through. I am not going to get into what I seen but I am very observant when it comes to other humans and there was some lunatics hanging in the front pacing around. The cemetery however is a bit more quiet therefore I was the only one in it for about an hour till I was about to leave.

There was some snow in the cemetery may I add and above the only entrance into it is the wrought iron overhang with a small worn plaque next to it. You would not know it but if you go towards the back of the cemetery you will come across on the hillside Tonopah's second cemetery known as the Masonic section. Again most of the graves are that of crosses or wood grave markers however I did find a few stones but very few had the Masonic symbol on or by it. Most graveyards in the west every Mason has its symbol engraved somewhere whether its on the stone or something left behind or even written words. At the top of the hill is also a wooden pole with a flag attached to it and nearby one of the biggest monuments or stones surrounded by a wrought iron enclosure. Also not to far away on that hill was just a pile of broken stones it looked like somebody literally took a hammer to a beautifully engraved tombstone then later someone picked up the pieces just piling them together.

I have to say as the sun was setting you could feel how cold it was getting in Tonopah I mean when you think about it the winters are brutally cold while the summers are brutally sizzling. It is one extreme to the next and I was hiking in more snow therefore once again my feet were really getting cold like when I was up in Belmont earlier that day. All I could think about is drinking ale and having a nice hot meal after adventuring all day long I mean can you blame me? How many paranormal investigators can you say do what I do and for that long? I was out hiking before sunup and here I was still at it as the sun was going down lol. I was so into my research at the cemetery my son finally came to get me to see how I was doing prior to that I was just exploring rows of crosses.

It seemed like though based on my investigation that the Masonic enclosures and gravesites were far better maintained then the old town cemetery. The wrought iron was more extensive and the enclosures were in much better shape. Most of the cemetery is very full except for the open area within it is apparent that the folks buried here were buried tightly together. You are not going to see any gardens, statues, angels, huge family plots, fresh flowers or anything similar here. Back in the day if you died in the mine they carried you straight to the cemetery put you in a pine box and buried you with a cross. Many of the people buried here are lost nobody even knows there name. Many of the people that once lived for many years in Belmont Nevada the very ghost town I just left from are also buried here in Tonopah. People moved around allot once one town lost its pizzazz or the mines went dry they would relocate to another nearby town so that they could continue to make a living here out west.

When I left the cemetery two different women walked past me both with cameras one to scared to enter the other one took three steps in and stopped. Everyone thinks they are a ghost hunter few people really have the know how to be one or what it takes. I do not go in any place expecting to see anything but I do take EMF readings, photos and EVP's more so now then I did years ago. Because I realize with hard work and correct timing you might be able to get some substantial evidence to prove that a location is haunted or the site of paranormal related events. My son and I goofed around in the parking lot of the Clown Motel there is even a gift shop I really had beer on my mind instead of clowns at the time therefore we decided to get back to the hotel to get cleaned up for dinner.

We arrived back at the Jim Butler Motel which is next door to the Mizpah and we were getting ready for dinner. I wanted to go eat at the Tahoe Brewing Company but after seeing the menu I thought they were to over priced and most of the food was not what we were into. Some breweries have pizza, steak, hoagies and burgers. But not here however very few are aware the owner of the brewery also owns the Mizpah which has a really fantastic restaurant and some of the beers found at the brewery are also available here. Therefore we decided to have a nice dinner at the historic Mizpah Hotel and all I can say is wow this place is the real deal. When I walked in here I felt like I stepped into the 1920's and everything is royal red inside as well as very dim. There was an old vault when you first walk on in and many historic artifacts including this roulette wheel which was all lit up. There are black and white photos of celebrities everywhere and even the Jack Dempsy Room. The chandeliers are gorgeous and overall its a really nice place not just nice but one of the most haunted hotels in the state of Nevada.

Some of you may have seen this location on haunted television shows there is some dark history to the hotel but ill tell you what I have plans in the future to stay here and conduct my own investigation. We ate at the Pittman Cafe named after a US Senator that stayed here. I had a really nice hot meal that included bacon potato soup, breaded chicken breast with pepper grave, rice and homemade mashed potatoes. I also ordered some sweet chicken wings as an appetizer, hot coffee and a large Irish Ale from the Tonopah Brewing Company. It was okay to get tipsy I was not driving I had a rough day offroading, driving and hiking through snow all day long. I was so happy just to be sitting comfortable at this historically haunted place. The service here was outstanding we had our food within minutes and the waitresses working here are so on top of things. Everyone was really friendly people were laughing having a good time and the man who had gotten stuck up in Belmont with his jeep was having dinner with his wife next to me its a small world.

The hotel use to be the tallest building in the state and it is in fact haunted by five well known ghost including the lady in red. Some of the ghost that haunt this place were victims of murder. One thing is for sure no matter where you walk in Tonopah the hotel is visible especially its large neon sign at night which resides at the top of the hotel. Its a very elegant and luxurious place where politicians stayed and even some mobsters. There was a vault where some of the silver bars from the Mizpah mine were stored in the basement also. So definitely allot of history, haunts and a really fantastic cafe to dine at. Their are historic relics from the town everywhere and people here are laughing having a good time which is also good to see. I could not think of a better place to be after a hard days work in the field chasing adventure and the unknown.

When we arrived back at the hotel my family went to sleep they were exhausted so was I but see I never have time for rest on these trips. I had to charge the batteries for the cam, gather the gear, put away everything in our packs for our Sunday adventure that includes our food and get everything organized. People think we just go and check out places but their is also allot of pre preparations that go into each case and journey. We do not go into these places without supplies once were on foot we do not have access to the vehicle or any luxury other then what we carry on our backs. So I spent a good couple hours getting everything ready Saturday night everyone was tired including me. The beds at the Jim Butler lacked comfort they were very hard the television was not really working and the heater something was wrong with it. Although the owners are friendly and have loads of historical information as well as other locations to check out the woman working the evening shift was once again giving me dirty looks when I decided to do the night portion investigation of Tonopah and walked past the office.

Based on my time in Tonopah I could clearly see that some of the folks here are really friendly others appear to not like outsiders. What they do not understand is that this town is doing well because of men like me who are willing to spend my money here. When folks like me pay to see the museums, stay at the historic hotels and eat at the restaurants it generates revenue for these places so that they can continue to remain open to the public. Not sure some of the locals get that but mining no longer exist the silver and gold of such locations are its tourism industry. Without tourism they would not be semi ghost towns but really just another abandoned location in disrepair! Despite some people copping up an attitude or being unfriendly other places in Tonopah were really fantastic to me all around like the staff at the Mizpah.

I grabbed my gear it was after midnight and then I begin to walk around Tonopah on foot by myself. The one thing I noticed is that at night there are allot of rowdy people downtown some of them drunk and the saloon was really kicking with people partying. There was some guy hanging in front of the saloon I walked past there and the dude booked inside. I guess at night I tend to scare others walking around then again people seem to judge others here more so then a place like Virginia City. It would appear some people have not had proper socialization skills and who would when you live in the middle of Nevada? All in all rather then try to sound offensive I just am speaking from my own experience. Allot of people at night in Tonopah are very nosy I had three different people try to follow me around in there vehicles while others just stare as if I have shit on my face!!! I just did not get the friendly vibe especially when I was at the Clown Motel and some people were just weirding me out like I was in a Rob Zombie movie taking on Captain Spalding or something lol.

I spent a couple hours walking the dark alleyways of Tonopah searching for anything strange whether that would be ghosts or something I could explore into the night. There are many brick, stone and even wooden buildings around town. You might have a newer home next to an old miners cabin next to a boarded up stone building next to some old mining machinery. I had visited an old fire hall at night, miner cabins, stone buildings including one of the first built in Tonopah which was a winery and a few other sites of interest. Tonopah is a very dark place at night one of the best places to stargaze but it also has this eerie dismal feeling. It feels like your always being watched and some of the boarded up buildings are just creepy period. There are tunnels all over the place under the town and many miners died in them. Almost every single place is haunted or building in Tonoaph or at least has a local ghost story. The only visible lights are that of downtown and the hotel sign that says Mizpah but if you start to hike up the hilly streets some of them are pitch black.

There are a few abandoned houses that I seen exploring but two of them downtown are much older and sit wide open. I wanted to go in both of them at night as I had planned but there was a police car parked near them with an officer sitting on his ass doing nothing. There was no way I was going to go in that house and have to pay a citation no way! I know how the cops are in Tonopah and they will throw you the book it does not matter if your going 5 mph downtown or your urban exploring believe me. So I ended up passing up the houses which I was a bit bummed about but again I just am not going to get a ticket. No less the houses which one appeared to be a victim of fire are remnants of Tonopahs past. Some of the first homes to be built in Tonopah are within a block of downtown while others are up where Butler staked his Silver Mining claims and the camp begin to grow into a town.

I walked downtown then I walked within a few blocks on each side of it down some side streets and even alley ways which at night can be quite eerie. I was photographing this one building it probably use to be a hotel or old apartment complex when some lady with her dogs starting chasing me. She was all yelling towards me what are you doing what are you doing I just ignored her and walked away. I was not doing anything illegal but standing on a public sidewalk yet this woman thought she would be nosy try to create drama for the purpose of she either is not getting laid or she feels the need to be up my ass in the middle of the night. I am not sure why people seem so surprised when others take photos that they have to ask what your doing. Tonopah is photographed by thousands of ghost towners each year while ghost hunting is quite popular here especially at the Mizpah where I was near while taking pictures. Some people act as if they never seen a camera lets see lady the flash is going off what does it look like I am doing taking a photo or flying up to the alien mother ship sheesh!

Despite the incident I did get to photograph some of the creepier buildings downtown and abandoned locations as well. I did not experience any ghost although when I was going past this one abandoned wooden structure I heard some loud bang nearby. Nobody was out not sure what that was about but one thing is for sure you never feel alone going down these alleys. Its important to go out into the night as during the day since this was a big project I made sure that I did both. It was cold outside I was really sick with this virus I have had for a few weeks. The problem is I get so excited to see these places I forget that I am sick making it worst. My lungs were killing me by the time I had gotten back to the hotel just being out in below zero hiking around at night I just did not care. I wanted to do and see as much as I possibly could. The only thing that I regret is that I found these three miner cabins from the 1800's on a hill I thought they were part of someone's property so I did not investigate them at night I did however end up coming back during the next day to find out they were abandoned and explorable. Some of the miners cabins in Tonopah are downright creepy and although just a shell they were at one time homes for the miners and there families. Some of those miners that lived in such cabins died in those mines thus leaving them abandoned for guys like me to someday check out!

The next morning we had breakfast at Tonopah Station Casino I like this place on the grounds have all sorts of old mining relics of the past such as an ore wagons and carts. If you go downstairs in the basement they have many old artifacts relevant to the town or at least some of the old mining towns. I seen an old typewriter, baby stroller, cash register. rocking horse and a tub along with quite a few other pieces of the past. They also had a stuffed bear it was huge one can imagine that if you encountered such a creature you probably would not last very long against it in the wild. We had a nice breakfast there the service was great food was fast and they were very friendly here. There was a cute girl working there who was very nice to us and well I am a guy so I happen to like talking to pretty ladies. I like when I have a nice breakfast before a big exploration its a good way to start off the day with some hot coffee as well as good times. I sometimes have the chance to eat dinner or breakfast before or after our investigations and we always have some good laughs. That is what matters most is the memories we share and the ones we create with the people we care about!

Now that I had eaten a good breakfast I went to the Mine Park which resides above Tonopah to meet the caretaker. He was a really nice guy knows allot of history about the area and pointed across the expanse to a stage stop which was relevant to Tonopah's history. He also told me allot about the mines and some of the sites that I should check out. He told us not to go up to the Desert Queen or Montana due to ice and snow. I guess he did not know us very well often people see my family and I thinking oh they probably are just tourist or they are not extreme adventurers. Little do others know is there is very little will do a little ice on a old wagon road is not going to stop us from reaching the top. The mine park is just that its a place where you can picnic and check out where Tonopah was born. The area above Tonopah has miner cabins, vaults, mills, mines, machinery, relics of the past, hoist houses, head frames, wagons, safes, cogs, gears, ore cart tracks, trestles, trails, picnic benches and even a museum on site. It is the mining district of Tonopah where the first tent camp sprung then came the cabins, mills and eventually downtown Tonopah which resides below.

We started off at the museum I wish I had more time for this place they have so much but I honestly did not therefore I went straight out into the hills to investigate the oldest sites within town. They have this place called the Glory Hole its this massive large pit that once was a mine with a cavern that collapsed. Its so big but also a bit eerie at the same time to think that this collapse probably was heard from anywhere in town. Luckily nobody died but today its just a giant cavity that gave way on itself as the beams just were not able to hold it up anymore. Mining was dangerous men died in accidents all the time some never came home to their families here. Sites like these are riddles with miner ghosts and trust me they are here I been doing this work for a long time. I have learned that most mines, mills and mining camps are generally very haunted. If they are not haunted by ghosts you will see rabbits I seen one on some ore cart tracks on some trestle.

We hiked up to the Silver Top Mine where the had a stamp machine some relics of the past and a few large dump piles. Nearby was a stone foundation which use to be the old administration building for the mine itself but today is in ruins. The men who worked these mines had to sift and hand shovel each debris pile to get to the Silver. Next to the mine is the Silver Top Grizzly Mill which is truly an amazing site. There this chute below the mill where the train and ore carts could pull under to receive the ore brought up from the mines. Inside the Grizzly is a giant room with a very large mechanism or wheel bearing. Their is also another room inside which has levers and controls with a wood stove as well as a chair for the operator to sit on. The wood floors here are rather weak although they will hold you one can see where some holes were patched up. There are boards that are loose and you can see all the way to the bottom of the Grizzly where the ore was loaded. To get inside of the Grizzly you actually have to cross this trestle where at one time ore cart tracks were laid its pretty cool.

If you go down the hill here you can cross a stope bridge its not old but it was built here so hikers could cross this massive crevice or mine shaft rather. Its pretty creepy to walk on the bridge you can physically look down into this crevice where you see nothing but darkness 50' in both directions. In between the crevice are wood pylons which provide a little support so that the mine does not collapse in on itself. If you pay close attention on the bridge and look down you can also see various wood platforms where miners probably stood on or were lowered down to back in the day. I believe this shaft is about 500' deep and trust me when I say this 50 stories within our earth is quite deep. However some of the mines in Tonopah went well over 100 stories down into the earth then some!

We went up to the Mizpah Mine there is this large steel head frame it was one of the first constructed in the country. It was designed to hoist the men and ore within the mine which was over 1,200' in depth. You can also stare down the shaft if you do not mind heights. There are a few shafts that been sealed off but still offer a viewing opportunity if you like this kind of thing which I do believe me lol. The hoist house was very very amazing. Inside it had its own work and tool shop while the main area of this building was full of large pristine machinery. I never seen red colored machinery before and allot of it was not even rusty. I guess back a few decades ago others tried to revitalize mining here thus restoring some of the machinery within the hoist house. We had this place keep in mind to ourselves so we spent sometime inside to stay out of the elements as the winds were whipping up. You needed allot of machinery to hoist the ore up from out of the mine and to lower the cage down to the bottom of the mines. There was an old Coca Cola machine or cooler and allot of old air compressors everywhere.

The next location we visited was the warehouse for the Mizpah Mine well we visited the outside it was locked up not sure why. I know that some of these buildings contain artifacts and lets face it people vandalize them. I could peer in the windows see an old phone and such but that warehouse was off limits and admin building. However just across from it is a workshop and timber cutting area. All timber for the mines or ore cart tracks were cut to size here. When you enter this building there is some machinery and quite a few relics of the past such as old bottles as well as rusty tools. There is also a tent with all the furnishings inside and I have spent a few years trying to find something like this. To finally get to see what the tents of the old mining camps looked like back then was really a great treat. The tent had a cot, wood stove, desk, hub chest and a few other things like you would expect to see such as a lantern or some tools. Life was simple back then but what started off as a tent eventually turned into a stone or wood house back during these times. The tents sometimes were lived in for months before a miner could physically construct his home! The timber building was dusty but the floors and everything inside is original it was nice because we had a nice snack break inside as we watched the windows whipping up the snow outside.

To physically have gone in to explore these places was much more then I bargained for believe me I had gotten to see everything you could think of in relation to the mining during the towns boom. We went out to this one area that looks all of downtown where these ore carts dead end behind the Mitzpah Hoist House. If you stand in this area or if you go up where the mines are you can see to vast expanses with views of mountains in every direction. Off in the distance is this huge tower it looks like a military installation and believe me there are a few surrounding Tonopah afterall your not far from Area 51. Many of the local soldiers come up to Tonopah after working at Groom Lake just to have an ale nothing wrong with that. But the views of downtown Tonopah and the vast desert expanses with the mountains back dropping this region are amazing and will NOT disappoint. We had the opportunity to go after a fresh snowfall so all the mills, machinery, mountains and downtown were covered in snow.

We would eventually make our way up to the Montana Mill and Mine site. Just below Oddie Peak and the Northstar Mine is a vault where we decided to hike up too. The vault would store the processed Silver from the workings of the Montana Mill. There are allot of foundations and stone walls up on the side of the mountain. If you look behind the vault you can see dump piles from the Northstar and above that the peak which is one of the tallest in the Tonopah area. I would not have time to summit the peak I wish I did but I just have to much to do in so very little time when it comes to traveling to these locations. So I would not have time for an herbal climb to the top lol. I would however have time to explore the ruins of the Montana and we had a nice picnic lunch inside the vault. The view of all the mines, mills and structures below was rather nice as we were higher up on the side of the mountain looking down into the mining district. If you feel daring to climb around there is a powder keg house or powder vault with an iron door near the oldest remnants of the Montana Mill. You cant see it from downtown let alone hiking around below Oddie Peak its kind of hidden and if you ask me was an awesome find!

I decided to take on off by myself I would not put my family through anything more grueling then to push through snow and go up the side of the mountain to get to the Desert Queen Mine and Hoist House. I was climbing around the side of Oddie Peak trying to figure an easier way over there. The snow as slippery and its rather steep therefore during the winter its a bit of a challenge which I do not mind. As most of you are aware I smoke my pipe allot on investigations. I enjoy to hike along some old mining road smoke my pipe take photos and really just enjoy the scenery. I smoked my pipe all the way to the hoist house and head frame which overlooks the entire town. As a matter in fact the head frame that sits up here is one of the most photographed and in tact ones found in the wild west. They have at night spotlights which light it up and it can be seen from anywhere in Tonopah. Although from town it looks close it really is not its on the side of a mountain hundreds of feet above the town. Its quite easy to hike above Tonopah back here and be over 600' above it all.

I took some photos of this head frame toked one up and relaxed for a bit as I earned the climb I came up on an old outhouse along the way. Its not easy to hike around here with the snow and ice the caretaker was not lying but I did it anyway's. We always will face challenges in the work that we do here were not going to sit around and wait for the paranormal to come to us. So when I caught my breath I entered the Hoist House which sits behind the head frame and is very similar in design to the Grizzly further downhill,.There is a basement or a small room under the Hoist House that appeared to be a tool shop with a work bench. But above it there is this giant room with a huge wheel bearings/gears which would hold the cables needed to lower the men into the mines and hoist up the ore. Generally this Hoist House only brought ore up but when the Belmont Desert Queen Mine Fire broke out in 1911 it was used by a man who I consider a hero who died to save so many miners lives as he lowered himself to the bottom each time bringing back miners. Sadly William F. "Big Bill" Murphy never came back his third time back when he went to rescue the last of the miners below. The men that Big Bill rescued were hoisted up at this very hoist house and shaft which resides just below the head frame. That shaft was over 1200' so it took time to get the men out by then 17 men had died in that fire including Big Bill who was the hero of this travesty.

Just like with the Silver Top Grizzly this hoist house also had a small control room with levers. The levers controlled the cage which would hoist the men to the top from the bottom of the mine along with ore. I had to be careful the Hoist House is not in the best shape the boards are loose, cracked and aged. Its very easy to fall through the floor at some of these locations therefore I tread very carefully and I test each location for safety before I decide to just walk around inside. Their is a bit of an eerie feeling at this site I cant explain it but just knowing that men died below my very feet is enough to sympathize that their ghost may still be haunting this mine. The Desert Queen and Belmont Mines connected underground therefore when the fire broke out at the 1200' level many of the miners made there way to this hoist house to be lifted out of here. If the heat did not kill you the smoke suffocated you it was a horrible way to die and therefore when you visit this place its kind of like a tomb it really is. Therefore I did make sure to investigate the Desert Queen site. Mines such as this were some of the deepest most successful silver mines in the world! The grounds are scattered with ore carts and rusty remnants of the past back when the mine was in its former glory and today remains completely abandoned.

Eventually I had gotten back to my family my son came looking for me they thought I climbed Oddie Peak and trust me I thought about it. The peak may have taken me another hour perhaps to get to the top depending on if I climbed straight up or took the old mining road. I just did not have time as I still had a few more places to check out before the sun was about to go down. I knew it was either climb or check out these historic sites I chose the history this time around. We hiked out to this small wood cabin with a sheet metal roof known as the Barbara Graham House also known as the Butcher Of Burbank. She was the last woman executed in the state of California. Based on what I read I believe she was innocent and did not kill anyone. She was with two men who robbed a woman and they accused her of pistol whipping the victim killing them. But I think the men put it on her no matter all three were put to death! The old cabin is very small big enough for a small dresser, shelf, cot and small wood stove. It was not elegant or built for comfort and where the cot normally sits there was a secret trap door in the floor where she could have stored her valuables at.

Below the Graham House is the old Tonopah & Goldfield railroad trestle keep in mind this is the only remnant left behind from Tonopahs railroading days! There were a few rails and ties on top of the trestle but its in shambles. The caretaker told me they want to at least try to rebuilt the tracks and have a train that runs through the mining district. If they do ill be more then happy to pay to ride the rails because I want my money to go towards the preservation of these sites that I visit and investigate. There is so many artifacts, relics and pieces of the past here its very extensive. The only other location it is this extensive at is Bodie another ghost town a couple hours away from Tonopah which we been to. It does not matter where you hike around Mount Oddie there is all sorts of things left behind from back in its Silver Boom ranging from miner cabins to machinery to the mills and debris. Unlike other semi ghost towns were people thieve these sites this area has a caretaker and always has been maintained therefore the grounds are kind of like a living museum. So the trestle is all original and you can walk under it or check out the old powder magazine next to it which is built right to the hillside. This was one of the biggest powder magazine rooms I ever been in you had to duck to enter but it had shelves and a hidden area deeper on inside. The railroad went right through the mining district before it entered town to pick up or drop off passengers!

We would eventually all descend back down from the vault and check out the Burro Mine. Today one can enter the Burro Mine Tunnel which takes you out to this stope where you can stand on a steel cage looking 500' down. Much like the bridge this part of the adventure allows you to get really up close and personal with the Burro Mine. When I stood inside the cage I could literally see where were inside the stope itself and you have to be careful do not bring anything inside the cage of value if you drop your phone or recorder it will be lost forever. The shaft is 500' down and when you look down or on either side of the cage you can see wood beams as well as platforms made out of wood below you. But eventually it gets so dark you cant see the bottom of the shaft therefore standing over 50 stories above a stope may not be everyone's cup of tea especially if you do not like heights or feel comfortable with it. I stood on the cage had gotten on my knees and was staring straight down the shaft. We were in the same crevice that you cross earlier on Stope Bridge only difference is we were not walking over it but rather we were inside the shaft suspended in mid air now that is pretty cool! The Burro mine was one of the first claims made by the towns founder and his wife. They collected the ore here then used the money to hire miners and eventually this deep shaft was born. Silver Mining really was the meat of things in Tonopah and mines just litter the entire hillside above the town itself.

I left with feelings of content I had gotten to not only explore but to investigate Tonopah's mining district which was all original and not allot has changed. The mills, machinery, ore carts and anything else on site was simply abandoned when the mines closed. Today most of it still stands if your willing to get out and hike around to find everything. Believe it or not they tried to revitalize mining here Howard Hugh's even tried to buy up some of the claims fix up some of the mills but nothing ever came of it. No less over the years so many did a great job preserving the history found here. I mean honestly I can write about it but really in the end I cant wait to show our viewers pictures, video footage and a deeper look inside these locations in Tonopah because it wont get better then this nor any more wild west!

We would eventually leave the old mining district behind I am not sure I seen everything like I said it was allot to take in so much to see and do. There were ruins everywhere and structures all just waiting to be discovered for its rich history and the ghost that haunt them. But more so if you travel below the district there are allot of old wood houses at the bottom of Mt. Oddie. There was at the entrance into the mining camp three old wood miner cabins. I know because I seen them at night while doing my evening portion to our investigation when I came across them. I did not realize they were all abandoned because in some instances some of the miner cabins are on private property therefore id have a second shot at checking out all three.

The cabins were a bit dismal every one of them had a bedroom and living room area. The living room however was also the kitchen these houses were not very large. I think two of the homes were only two rooms while the third one had three rooms. One house looked like kids went in and made it look all psychedelic I am sure more then a few came here to smoke a joint I know I did lol. The cabins were in very bad shape holes in the walls and ceilings as well as rat dropping everywhere. Nothing of great surprise just a few abandoned houses that miners once lived in that are in a state of decay. Behind one of the cabins was a small pit that looked like someone was trying to mine but had no success. The cabins were a bit creepy it felt cold in them and you just knew that probably the men who lived in them met their demise in the mines just a short walk above them.

I only had an hour or two before sunset would transpire I felt I did quite well considering that I had nearly seen everything you could see in Tonopah. But I still had more work ahead of me I needed to drive around get some photos of the historic structures downtown during the daylight hours. I also made a stop at a haunted elementary school I did not stay long other then to do a short film discussing the Chinese Riots which took the lives of one man where the school stands today. His ghost is very well known the teachers and the principal do not deny the haunting's that transpire here. Although the school was not that exciting probably because I could not go inside to investigate it still was well worth the stop.

I did spend time photographing the town a little its very pretty when snow hits here with the peaks and vast expanses overshadowing it. Also if you pay close attention there are all sorts of remnants of the past around town such as ore carts or mining machinery. I seen a head frame with an ore keg attached to it in town also seen a few old rusty iron statues. One of the statues was that of Jim Butler and his wife Belle back in the day women were not involved in mining but his wife was a notable figure in wild western history. She really was heavily involved with Tonopahs development therefore the statues represent this Belmont couple who went from ranching to riches discovering some of the richest silver in the world. There are also other statues in town including one near the post office which is one of Big Bill Murphy carrying another miner in his arms. Big Bill was the hero in the Belmont Mine fire sadly as I said before by the time he went to make a third rescue he never came back up and died to save the lives of other men. Its sad we no longer live in a time where someone will put another's life before their own it truly is therefore we will also use our site to honor Big Bill along with all the other great things we do for these historic sites.

My last adventure of the day took place at the Tonopah Belmont Mill which is on the back side of Mount Oddie and the town itself. Its kind of an easy miss like most of the mills nestled in the hills but I discovered this location coming back from the air base and thought hey I want to check that out tomorrow. So I finished off my adventure in Tonopah at this very monolithic mill which looks like ruins of an ancient temple. I pulled down this snowy road which climbs up to the bottom of it. Once you reach the mill site its amazingly huge with about five stories of walls but the first couple walls stand over 20' in height. If you climb up around to the second wall there is a series of foundations. If you continue to climb up along the mill because there are no stairs, ladders or even roads you can stand above it look down. The entire mill is tiered throughout the hillside and when you get to the top you can see the back side to Oddie Peak. Here I was in the mining district above Tonopah on the other side no doubt though that the mines ran through the mountain with entrances probably on both sides of the mountain.

Climbing to the top of the mill was very very difficult for me its steep and there are some areas that just drop off. One slip and that might be the end of your life so I had to get good footing then began my ascension. My family did not join me for this expedition it was dangerous and they were cold as well as tired. I knew I had to see more to keep pushing on to get closer to the truth so this one was just for me to take on. About half way up the mill there are tunnels but they are only a few feet high I did not enter the rats nest but there were droppings all over and if you breath that in your asking for a disease lol. When I reached the top of the mill I found a vault where the kept the silver, safe and even a giant brick oven or kiln. Those were great finds believe me and off in the distance I could see the old Tonopah Air Bases wood hangars from five miles away. I was thinking to myself wow I was just there yesterday driving around those hangars and offroading around that vast expanse where the base resides in. The views from up on top here are simply stunning it was well worth the climb.

I did have a bit of an accident when climbing to the top despite falling in the snow multiple times and struggling to get to the top there was a board with a large nail in it under the deep snow. Yep you guessed it I stepped down on it and the nail went through my foot I was filming at the time so your going to get to see me pull the nail right out of my shoe because it went through it.  It did not stop me from exploring the mill here but believe you and me I felt it. I was so exhausted by the time I reach the top of the mill I mean I had been driving and going since Friday and here it was Sunday evening and I was still climbing the hillsides. The entire hill side was full of gems though TNT canisters or boxes, steam boiler, water tanks, foundations, bricks from a smelter, tunnels and walls everywhere. It reminded me of some fort and people would look at it first hand think yep its a fort but its not. Its just a massive mill that was used to process the silver taken out of the Belmont Mines the same mines where 17 men died in a fire at.

Off in the distance which I did not hike to because I have a killer zoom and because I kept my family waiting thus they were worried about me I found this concrete two story structure. It looked like another vault but only this one had two stories. I am not sure what that two story rectangular structure was used for or if it was actually a vault. When I was hiking around the top of the mill there was also some mining machinery and an ore cart. I also found this giant funnel such funnels were used to sift through the ore or finer material but it was crushed, rusted and toppled on the mills concrete flooring. Below the mill closer to the mine dump piles there were two round concrete buildings with openings for windows. They kind of looked like barracks or something you would see in a fort. Not sure I ever seen anything like this but they both were round buildings build into the hillside with no roof or windows on them. Everything around the mill is merely today a shell but I seen photos of this mill and back in the day it was a fine piece of American history.

When I was hiking past the mill above it I heard rushing water and thought whoa did I come across some kind of creek. There was this huge concrete slab but it was cracked therefore a 1' hole was exposed. I think I came across some underground hot springs. The reason why I say hot because when I stood near the opening it warmed my legs up very quickly and the air was extremely warm at least 80 degrees or more. If I was cold I was no longer cold warming up by the hot springs. I am not sure why they sealed it or if there was some kind of mine shaft where the water is now flowing through but I thought it was pretty cool. It may have been some underground river it was flowing really fast up on the side of a mountain and the slab they used to cover it was huge like 12' across. The problem is that it cracked thus fell a little causing an opening and no I did not squeeze in there I thought about putting my head in the hole to see though. The water was flowing underground therefore it probably is not safe unless you plan on never seeing daylight again. I used the small opening to warm me up it worked my feet were freezing I had snow all over me. Keep in mind that this probably was the springs the Shoshone and other pioneers camped at during their travels. It might have not been to far where old man Butler through a piece of silver ore at his stubborn mule and realized that he just made one of the biggest Silver strikes in the world!

I did eventually climb the dump pile I stood right on top of the mines looking down it was pretty cool. There also was an ore bin chute and a few other ruins I found below the mill site. I have to say the mill is quite extensive its hard to even find pictures of it good explorers online around this region are hard to find. Most people never photograph or put any history up but we will have it all when this hits our website so in the future others can cross reference our finds with there own or enjoy this location the same way I did. People would never know about half of these locations if we never made them known I guess that is why almost every paranormal show you see on TV uses our locations of course they never compensate us for it which sucks because were the ones who find them and risk it all. I know one thing when I had gotten back to the vehicle my foot was throbbing that nail went in quite deep and hence the reason why you really should not explore these mills in the snow. There might be shafts, rusty sharp metal or wood boards with nails hiding under the snow you just do not know. No less it was what it was I had climbed the back side of Mt. Oddie above one of Tonopah's most monolithic mills and found this forgotten gem which is going to be a wonderful addition to our site.

After the mill the sun was almost down it was time to head for home I spent allot of money to conduct this expedition between gas, food, hotels, preparations and time. It was a three day project one that involved the ghost town of Belmont Nevada followed by three days of exploring in Tonopah. We seen mills, hoist houses, mines, historic buildings, cemeteries, vast expanses, haunted hotels and allot of early mining history in the region. I made sure before I left Tonopah I stopped for a hot latte then I had gotten my food and drinks for the ride home. I am not sure I ever leave anywhere anymore without a cooler of food and drinks on these expeditions. I also had firewood in case I had gotten stuck somewhere and trust me anything can happen out here its so remote. The ride home for me is nearly four hours so although I do not live far I live far enough so each trip I make has to count and we have to see as much as we can. I explored so much and did so much paranormal investigating on this trip one can only hope after having cold feet and braving the winter weather that we found some evidence worthy of sharing with the public! No less Tonopah and Belmont will be sites for years to come that others can enjoy through The Paranormal & Ghost Society that includes the breathtaking Nevadan scenery!

My son had a strange incident before we left town you see he had to use the bathroom while Tammy was getting me a latte and I was filling the tank up with gas. He went inside to use the restrooms came on out and his beanie was on a shelf. We have no idea how it got on a store shelf and the fact is he did not bring it in but left it at the vehicle while I was filling up. He comes back to the truck and says did you put my hat inside the gas station I was like ummm no do not know what your talking about. Now were not sure if this was one last trick by the dearly departed to let us know they were here with me all along but you have to admit its very strange. Many of the new businesses and structures in Tonopah were built over the old ones where miners use to live. Such sites are now home to various ghost stories like the elementary school on the hill where a man had gotten a hatchet to the eye and died right on the lot where the school today resides. So you never know Tonopah was a bit lawless you had your share of prostitutes who sometimes were murdered and brave men who went into those mines only never to come out again. That was what life was in the wild west Tonopah was very secluded everything had to be imported in until the train was in operation. The same train went to a variety of ghost towns or cities I been too including Rhyolite, Bullfrog and even Las Vegas Nevada during its years of operation.  Back in the day the nearest town was 50 miles away and that was Belmont so these pioneers who lived here were facing the frontier on there own!

On my way out of town I did stop to photograph a couple more head frames I also found a few other oddities which ill check out next time I am up here. I am trying to work on scheduling an investigation of the haunted Mizpah my next time I am up here. That way we can check out the hotel and maybe polish up any sites we missed. I know that when I left town I found two more mills one out in the middle of nowhere and one above the town that is a bit hard to see. I also found this series of buildings that were boarded up one of them has a pentagram carved in the stonework above the doorway. As a matter in fact sometimes when I visit such locations I am able to find new locations to explore in the future so I was also out here scoping out new places to check out. I found this abandoned hotel out in the desert with a bunch of other buildings and not to far from Tonopah there are three or four other ghost towns I plan on doing. As a matter in fact coming up were going to explore one of them I just did not have the time to do because it might take a day just to drive then hike on in then explore the mining camp and its very large mines. So we definitely will return its a work in progress and we have much ahead of us to see and do pertaining to this part of Nevada.

I cant wait to see more and this time around I did not get a single speeding ticket that is because I learned my lesson the first couple times. I did see however other people getting tickets left and right that is all they do here is run it like a business. Also may I add the courthouse on the hill is worth a gander its a very nice building in town. I learned allot on this trip about the region but also about how Belmont and Tonopah were really allot alike just one came earlier then the other and when Tonopah grew it spelled the demise for Belmont to the north. I am sure that I did not see everything but we will return to revisit Belmont and Tonopah once again. I will be trying to get in the Belmont Inn and Courthouse for an investigation but also Tonopah's Mizpah Hotel which is one of the top haunted sites in Nevada. So when I do I look forward to doing more exploring, offroading and paranormal investigating. This area is full of strange lore, legends, historic, UFOs and tales of ghosts one can only hope that we caught something during our investigation. I did hours of filming, photography and EVP at a variety of places which I look forward to sharing in the future. Two big semi ghost towns and an endless amount of adventure. The snow was a bit of a hindrance but being I am from Buffalo NY for me it was allot of fun to explore in just like back in the old days when we use to trample around in it back east during our explorations.

Its a fine mix of places we did work at night and during the day so you get to see a little of both. You will also get to see the cemetery which has many interments that died in the Tonopah Plague and some of the best preserved mining relics found in the US let alone any ghost town here in Nevada. I cant wait to return it might be in a few months or a few years but we will do more in depth work of some of the locations we found and visited. More or less Belmont and Tonopah serve as introductions into whole new territory that will be working with and eventually haunted Goldfield which is just to the south of here and yes I been there to. But being somewhere and physically getting out exploring are two different things therefore I cant wait to hike around and see more. I went for three days exploring these locations and the more I seen the more I want to see. Everything around here has a story or a tale Tonopah is an eerie little town very isolated from there est of the world but it also a true symbol of the wild west and the frontier which surrounds it!

You guys have NOT seen anything yet this place may have mined silver but in my eyes its worth gold! These expeditions symbolize will, perseverance, persistence, strength and determination. Honestly how many paranormal groups do what we do and we hope to inspire others but also at the same time achieve preservation of these wonderful locations! These are my stomping grounds to an explorer like me who enjoys this type of thing its a playground just waiting to be conquered. Remember when you were kids and your parents brought you to a new slide or jungle gym  how you had to climb and ride on everything? I always feel the same way when I am out there in the field this is where I am most comfortable at therefore the work I do is done purely out of commitment to enjoying what each location has to offer.

I am Lord Rick and these are my journeys but not mine alone but ones meant to be shared with all those brave enough to delve into them! The ride home was rather scenic once the sun was down though the desert can be a dark eerie place especially when your driving for hours and see nothingness. I was just so happy to stop on the way home just to have a big jalapeno burger it probably tasted good only because I was hungry, wet and cold from a day of endless adventuring. It was good to be home but a part of me never wanted it to end although it never has to because here in 2016 we have allot of intense offbeat adventures coming. What a great way though to start off the New Year and 2016 with two really fantastic ghost towns and the best yet is still left to come!

I captured this object near sunset from the Old Tonopah Cemetery which appears to be a solid black triangle. While I understand most UFO's are mistaken identity or unexplanable I found this object to be strange. For one it shot straight up into the atmosphere two it made not a single noise. Its possible its some kind of stealth jet I mean lets face it you do have military bases not to far from Tonopah including Groom Lake aka Area 51. We may never know what it is but we must as UFOlogist remain vigilant by looking toward our skies.

I captured this beautiful entity near the entrance of the old Tonopah Cemetery. I have posted the enhancements so you can see it better its clearly a face in the mass of ectoplasm very intriguing and deriving from allot of energy.

After capturing what appears to be that of a man at the front entrance to the cemetery I captured this long haired woman. You have to understand that the people who were buried here died horrible deaths mining accidents, epidemics and even murder. Tonopah had allot of dark times fall upon it and the cemetery behind the clown motel is haunted but very few have captured evidence of that fact up until now.

A strange looking entity with kind of a frowning chubbier face reminds me of one of the ghost of of Casper to tell you the truth. But since ectoplasm freely flows at times it can cause some distortion when we are studying an entity and how it appears.

I captured three to four amazing entities in this single mass of Ectoplasmic energy. The first sort of looks like a skull maybe with long flowing hair the second is merely a face it might have some poofier hair around it could have been a woman and the third appears to be maybe a couple holding one another. You can see what appears to be legs, torso, shoulders, an arm and a couple of heads which could signify a couple or maybe a mother and her child. I do not have all the answers but over the years I have learned that family stays together even in the afterlife based on my findings and were not sure why this is. It could signify the bond or simply residual energy even!

The Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project resides just outside of Tonopah in the middle of a vast expanse with nothing around it for miles but its massive tower and hundreds of solar panels. I read that this project is supposed to change how we utilize energy especially since the energy generated from its massive tower is clean or green rather. I do not know allot about it other then it attracts allot of birds also read the tower at one time was leaking and at times the project was halted. It sounds like to me until they get a grip on how to utilize the solar energy it wont be helping these Nevadan towns that surround it anytime soon. I stood up on the side of Odie Peak when this caught my eye thought it was an Airforce tower or some military base then did more research on it to find out what it really is. If you want to learn more here is a link about the project for further research purposes only: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crescent_Dunes_Solar_Energy_Project

In the fall of 2011, a California-based solar energy company, SolarReserve, started construction on $980 million advanced solar energy project just outside town called the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project. The project incorporates SolarReserve's advanced solar energy storage technology and will put Tonopah at the worldwide center of technology for this class of solar energy storage. The project construction activities, which peaks at 800 workers on site, was scheduled to be completed in 2014. It may just become one of the largest solar thermal plant in the world.

Barbara Graham lived in this small cabin you see on the hill not to far from the Montana Mine and above the Mizpah Mill. It was a simple standard of living here with a wood stove, table, stove and cot for sleeping. Some of you may come to know that Grahama was known as Bloody Babs for a murder most people believe she did not commit during a robbery gone bad. She had asked to use the phone of a rich widow and when three of her gang members charged in Graham had pistol whipped the elderly lady in hopes to get her to tell them where the jewels were kept. The gang then murdered her by suffocated the woman in a pillow thus never finding the jewels which eventually led to death by cyanaide in the gas chambers. Graham's last words before spoken before death were ""Good people are always so sure they're right." over 50 people watched her being executed and I believe she was the last female to be put to death in the state of California via this method.

My son and I found a couple hidden compartments within this cabin we are not sure why they were built or what their intent was. My guess would be that Barbara Graham had a couple secret compartments to store her guns, jewels or even loot. You see she always was a troubled girl in and out of the prison system. Most of what she did was petty crimes like perjury for example. It would be easy for her to conceal jewels or other person valuable items in her cabin with a compartment such as this then throw a rug on over it I mean who would know?  The cabin is a reminder of the woman who use to live here who once worked as a waitress and even at the hospital. She was not a well to do woman I mean can you imagine living in a cabin like this surrounded by the sounds of mining going on 24 hours around the clock. Its hard to know what the compartment was used for but no less it is fun to speculate. Bloody Babs may have used this secret compartment to conceal her crimes.

Barbara Graham

Murder of Mabel Monohan

Henry Graham was himself addicted to illegal drugs and known as a hardened criminal. Through him, Barbara met his criminal friends Jack Santo and Emmett Perkins. She started an affair with Perkins, who told her about a 64-year-old widow, Mabel Monohan,[5] who was alleged to keep a large amount of cash in her home in Burbank.

In March 1953, Barbara joined Perkins and Santo, as well as John True and Baxter Shorter (two of their associates), in robbing Monohan's home in Burbank. Barbara reportedly gained entry by asking to use her phone. Once Monohan opened the door for Graham, Perkins, Santo and True burst in, followed later by Shorter. The gang demanded money and the jewels from Monohan, but she refused to give them anything. At this point, according to the statement and testimony of John True, Barbara began viciously pistol-whipping Mrs. Monohan, cracking her skull and then suffocating her to death with a pillow.

The robbery attempt was a futile effort; the gang found nothing of value in the house and left empty-handed. They later learned that they had missed about $15,000 in jewels and valuables stashed in a purse in the closet near where they had murdered Monohan.

Arrest and conviction

Baxter Shorter was arested on another charge and gave the police details of the Monohon murder and attempted robbery. However, his statement was leaked and he was kidnapped and murdered by Perkins and Santos.[6] Subsequently, John True agreed to become a state witness in exchange for immunity from prosecution. In court, True testified against Graham, who continually protested her innocence.[7] The press nicknamed her "Bloody Babs", reflecting the public disgust for her alleged actions.[8] Knowing the consequences of her state of having no alibi, Graham proceeded to damage her own defense when she desperately accepted the contrived offer of another inmate to pay $25,000 to the inmate and "a friend" who would provide a false alibi. The inmate, however, was working in league with an undercover policeman to reduce her own vehicular manslaughter sentence. The officer offered to pose as the "boyfriend" whom Graham was with the night of the murder if, he insisted, she admitted to him in confidence that she actually had been at the scene of the crime. The officer was recording the conversation. This attempt to suborn perjury, plus the recorded admission that she indeed had been at the scene of the widow Monohan's senselessly violent murder, abutted by her previous perjury conviction, completely destroyed Graham's credibility in court. When questioned about her actions at the trial, she said, "Oh, have you ever been desperate? Do you know what it means not to know what to do?"[9] Graham was ultimately convicted, while the informant was immediately released from jail and her sentence commuted to time served.

Appeals and execution

Graham, Santo, and Perkins were all sentenced to death for the robbery and murder. Graham appealed her sentence while serving time at the California Institution for Women in Chino. Her appeals failed, and she was transferred to the death row at San Quentin State Prison to await execution. On June 3, 1955, she was scheduled to be executed at 10:00 am, but that was stayed by California governor Goodwin J. Knight until 10:45 am. At 10:43 am, the execution was stayed by Knight again until 11:30 am, and a weary Graham protested, "Why do they torture me? I was ready to go at ten o'clock."[10] At 11:28 am, Graham was led from her cell to be strapped in the gas chamber. There, she requested a blindfold so she would not have to look at the observers. Her last words were, "Good people are always so sure they're right."[11]   On being advised that taking a deep breath after the cyanide pellets were dropped would make it easier, she replied "How the hell would you know?"[12][13][14]

Barbara Graham is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, San Rafael, California.

The Mizpah Hotel one of the most haunted sites in Tonopah known for the Lady In Red, Miner Ghosts and other apparitions that are said to haunt its rooms and halls.

A sneak peek view of the front desk inside the Mizpah which today is like stepping back into time. It is as haunting as it is outside as it is inside in my opinion.

Our first evening in Tonopah we ordered Hometown Pizza doesnt this look good its a bit pricey overly priced if you ask me but its the best pizza and perhaps the only one you will find in a 100 miles lol.

Dining at the Mizpah which would include asian sweet chicken wings, rice, country fried chicken, soup and beer.

Oh man these wings were awesome how can you not love exploring and coming back to this?

Close up of my chicken wings some beer battered mushrooms also.

Straight up from the Tonopah Brewing Company at the Pittman Cafe and I have to say this Irish Red Ale was simply awesome! Trust me if you go to the Mizpah make sure you get one of these after your exploration.

I had almost the entire restaurant to myself very historic yes but also a quiet dinner you cant beat! Dinner at the Pittman Cafe not bad good restaurant to dine at in Tonopah.

Closeup of my New England Clam Chowder I needed this warm soup was hiking in snow all day long.

Close up of my dinner simple yes but sweet! A nice dinner to finish off the evening before I do my night adventure.

Our final morning of our Belmont - Tonopah included a big heart breakfast with warm coffee and yes all three plates are mine lol. We dined at the Tonopah Station Casino which has a nice collection of wild western relics both inside and outside if you want to check it out for free. The breakfast here is not to shabby before we were heading off to check out some mills, mines and do some hiking above Tonopah for the day.
::::::::::Warning PLEASE Be Advised::::::::::

Also please be advised although a little off topic there is a rest stop north of Tonopah Nevada its very remote but if you happen to stop there to use the restroom or even to lay down your head please use caution. For those who are not aware of this rest stop it is located on US - 95 Rte. 6 West 13.5 miles north of Tonopah Nevada also referred to as the Click Here: Map Of Millers Rest Stop. Millers at one time was a small milling camp that processed the Silver Ore in Tonopahs early mining days before stamp mills were built there. I believe there is a serial killer on the loose who may be responsible for the many disappearance in the region and Nye County the past few years. More or less those passing through who might be alone on the road traveling should be vigilante. The area is very remote at night its so dark at the rest stop that you can barely see your hand in front of your face. Over the past few years quite a few people have vanished without a trace around rest stops in rural Nevada.

As a paranormal investigator I could say its aliens which would be naive of me but the truth is that back in 2016 I was on the road from Vegas to Carson City late at night when a truck carrying an empty car dolly slowly pulled into the rest stop behind a woman sleeping in her vehicle. Her vehicle at the time was the only one parked at the rest stop it was dark. I believe the individual was getting ready to commit a crime it was late past midnight and when I pulled up I had gotten out immediately standing there staring at the individual in the truck. The pickup truck peeled off really fast then drove out in the middle of the desert behind the rest rooms and was watching me from the darkness they did not get out but instead waited for me to leave at that time I did not as I was concerned. That is when I pulled out my 40 caliber Smith & Wesson pistol and the individual sped off at a great speed in the parking lot behind us out of anger. I would have picked up my cam and filmed the incident but at the time I was worried about my girlfriend who was in the vehicle scared and felt that instead I might need to call the law or possibly stop someone thus I waited to film the vehicle and plate after the individual put some distance between us.

I had waited a few minutes to let the truck get ahead of us on the road however strangely ten minutes later I caught up to the vehicle and it begin to play cat and mouse with me. As I tried to pull ahead the vehicle would not let us pass then it slowed down driving half way in the shoulder of the road trying to get me to go around it in a no passing zone with tractor trailers coming towards us in the opposite direction. The strange thing about those that vanished in Nevada is often there vehicle is found at another location or sometimes the person and the vehicle simply vanishes. How is this done? The culprits often use car dolly's that way no prints are every left behind and the law cannot monitor rest stops because they can pinpoint crime at a location a persons vehicle is not at. I have posted a video which can be found by Clicking Here: Lord Rick Follows Suspicious Vehicle Near Tonopah Rest stop.

I believe this individual was in the process of committing a crime possibly getting ready to tow this woman's car from the rest stop using the empty car dolly. One must understand that more then often if your going to drive across Nevada with a car Dolly with a California license plate your going to be towing a vehicle behind it; especially if you are traveling in the middle of nowhere you have no purpose for an empty dolly. Not to say that the individual was not going to go buy a car somewhere else in Nevada but it still was very suspicious and we as Nevadans must look out for one another. To many people and there vehicles are often found missing or displaced. How this is done? More then likely not little green men from Mars beaming cars up to their flying saucers but instead psychos who might prey or take advantage of those who are on the road in a part of Nevada that lacks law enforcement, witnesses or even necessary help at a rest stop that is remote such as the one north of Tonopah.

Some of you may wonder why at the end of this wonderful article I have decided to include this information? Well as a paranormal investigator I go out all hours of the night I see allot of things over the years. I do not just see UFOs or Ghosts but I have seen people doing who use nightfall as a way to commit not so righteous deeds. Therefore, I have a moral obligation to say something since our site has millions of viewers. I know that our Tonopah addition will draw in hundreds of enthusiast who might take an interest in urban exploring or doing some paranormal research in Tonopah therefore we do want to warn those who might get on the road to travel up here to make sure A. They are not on the road let alone this rest stop at night alone B. Carry some form of protection such as a stun gun, firearm or even a durable pocket knife and C. Good cell phone service in case you do get a signal.

Tonopah is a popular place for those coming up from Vegas or down from Reno to explore the massive wood hangars at the Air Base or some just simply want to tour the Old Tonopah Cemetery behind the Clown Motel. Regardless if you decide to follow in my footsteps visiting some of these great sites in Tonopah heed my warning I have spent a long time on the road visiting remote ghost towns and other locations the individual that was casing this rest stop was up to no good. Therefore, that could have been me, you, a mother, grandfather, your son or daughter at that rest stop. If I did not intervene what would have happened to the individual sleeping in there vehicle? If you see a white pick up truck possibly silver in color with extended cab it has the license plate 6YSR967 near Tonopah or any rural rest stops throughout Nevada or California acting suspiciously please call local law enforcement or possibly the FBI immediately! Lets help keep Nevada safe for our adventurers and those enjoying the silver state!
