Tonopah Springs would become one of the richest mining sites in the west perhaps you can say the first silver bonanza of the 20th century but it also came to be allot later then most boom towns in the region like Columbus, Manhatten and Belmont Nevada where Jim Butler resided and operated a hay ranch. Before Tonopah even became a town it was known for its springs where many Native Americans camped many years prior and pioneers who made their way to other mining towns in the region. That would all change when Jim Butler spent a chilly night at the springs where he would make one of the biggest yet most important silver discoveries of the 20th century. Many stories circulate on how Butler discovered the ore the most popular is the one you hear about how his mule wandered off he chased it down and noticed an outcropping that contained silver. Another story is that when Butler woke up the next morning from camping he realized his mule had wandered off so upon finding he was getting ready to throw a rock at it out of anger when he realized it felt kind of heavy and contained pure silver. I also heard a third story that his mule and even Butler himself kicked a heavy rock accidentally which turned out to be a piece of silver ore. No matter what story you have heard Butlers discovery made waves across the world.

It was May 19th 1900 and like most prospectors before they jumped the gun they often had the ore assayed to find its worth let alone if the ore was rich enough to file a claim. Butler did not rush into anything he could not even convince an assayer at the nearby Klondike that the ore had any value. The assayer stated that the sample he brought contained mainly iron and threw the sample into the back of his tent. Butler still was not convinced that the ore he found was worthless therefore he went back to the springs gathered more ore samples to take back to his ranch in Monitor Valley to the boom town of Belmont. Tasker Oddie a friend of Jim's who later became the governor of Nevada stopped by the ranch studied the samples and offered to pay for a second opinion or assay rather. In turn Butler offered Oddie a quarter interest of the assay and thus the samples were examined by William Gayhart from Austin Nevada who was also offered a quarter of interest. Gayhart discovered that this silver ore could be worth as much as $600 a ton. When Oddie found out about how valuable the samples were he sent an Indian runner to Butler's ranch to alert him of the great news. Butler again was not in any hurry thus he stayed at his ranch to finish completing his hay harvest never bothering to file any claims where he discovered the ore.

But just like any mining claim word had gotten out especially from the nearby Klondike and soon prospectors were casing Tonopah Springs searching for Butler's discovery. On August 27th 1900 his wife and him filed eight claims near the Springs in Belmont. A well known six of these were the Desert Queen, Burro, Valley View, Silver Top, Buckboard and Mizpah Mine. Which all turned out to be the biggest producers of ore in the state of Nevada. I also had the opportunity to visit all these mill and mining sites so if you sift through some of our galleries you will see pictures of them that I spent allot of time taking during my expeditions to Tonopah. The first work begin however in October 1900 at the Mizpah and the mining camp of Butler was born. By Christmas Day of 1900 14 men lived at the camp along with Butler and Tasker Oddie who at the time was Nye County's district attorney. Butler decided to lease out all of his claims for a year from December 1900 to December 1901. Oddie and Butler being partners would recieve 25% in royalties from all the gold and silver mined at each of the claims. I believe Butler to be a smart business man because he could make money without making a huge effort letting others do the work for him. Before the camp grew many pioneers stopped at a stage stop about 25 miles west of Tonopah known as Coaldale Nevada aka Coal Wells. Other then that Tonopah Springs was very desolate and the trek was rough.

When word had gotten out that you could lease one of the Butlers rich mines by January of 1901 40 men lived in the camp and by March 24th of 1901 stagecoaches from Sodaville were arriving here with seven passengers. The trip took two days stopping at Crow Springs. The camp was small at the time it had quite a few tents perhaps seven or eight wood shacks with a population of about 60 which grew to a few hundred. The post office named Butler opened up on April 10, 1901 and by March 3, 1905 the name of it was changed to Tonopah. The first year alone was quite profitable almost $800,000 in gold and silver were pulled out of Butlers claims in 1901 alone. Mining would persist for at least four decades and in the towns early years Tonopah grew into more of a small city. It had six saloons, lawyers, doctors, hotels, restaurants, lodging houses, assay offices and eventually even a railroad. I did some research and pulled out some archival photos from the towns early days so please make sure you check out Vintage Tonopah. This was a lively town the population by 1902 had grown to 650 people and the first wedding that took place here was a Harry Stimler and Eleanor Whitford. That same year in June of 1901 a newspaper had come to town ran by a W.W. Booth who had published a paper also in Belmont calling this new venue the Tonopah Bonanza. The paper however referred to the town as Butler not Tonopah up until 1905 when Booth took over as postmaster from Sinclair who served the town till around 1905. By 1905 one could easily say that Tonopah had over 3000 to 5000 residents more or less it became a small city during its boom years. I heard as many as 25 to even 50 thousand lived here at one time its hard to know for sure booms often did not last very long so no census could be done.
When the wagon roads in town were being built Tonopah's streets were made of Silver that is because those trying to plat the town were using blue rock found abundantly in the area which turned out to be silver ore.

It did not take Jim Butler to sell our his claims which all were consolidated. I never could figure out why Butler sold perhaps because he wanted to retire and figured that such a sale would be enough to set him up for the rest of his life. Then again lets be honest would you rather live on your ranch or in a boom town that had lawlessness? epidemics? I believe Butler to be an intelligent man he leased his mines in the beginning therefore royalties were coming in. Thus as the mines became more successful he knew they would sell for much more then when he swung his first pick axe. In fact this gave birth to a new company known as the Tonopah Mining Company controlled 160 acres of the Tonopah Mining District. The company also had holdings in the Tonopah - Goldfield Railroad and had other mining companies in places like California, Nicaragua, Colorado, Canada as well as stocks in Philadelphia and the San Francisco Exchanges. This company build over 46 mile of lateral workings beneath Tonopah scary huh? I remember an old timer telling me about this cavern the miners had mined adjacent to the Mizpah which was rich with silver the problem was that they mined the cavern so large that the ceiling had given away collapsing. It was so intense it created a small earthquake in Tonopah and was heard throughout town. One of the deepest shafts ever sunk by this company was 1500' deep. At the time the company did not operate any mills in Tonopah so they shipped the ore to Millers where it was processed at a 100 - Stamp Mill until a more suitable mill could be built to handle the large amount of silver being brought up from the Tonopah Mines. Mining really went on for about fifty years but half of them were not as productive as during the boom besides the fact around 1942 a massive fire broke out burning down a hotel and causing havok at the mine where it begin. Hardships, trials and tribulations were all part of Tonopah's livid past just as with any true mining town in the American west.

In 1902 the Tonopah - Belmont Mining Company was formed this my friends is a massive mill which is why it has its own category on our website. I drove past the mill coming back from the Old Tonopah Airbase. Like any motivated urban explorer the ruins of this massive mill are equal or greater to that of a temple. Level after level of concrete, rusty machinery laying around, tunnels, tier after tier of massive walls towering above the next and even a vault probably for storing valuable bars. Sometimes when I go out exploring ghost towns I do not plan to see the things I do but I might get lucky come across a mine or mill that maybe was not on the list. Sometimes being spontaneous has its rewards mine was a terrible fall and a sharp rusty nail hiding under the snow. Old mills around Nevada can be dangerous in the winter rebar may protrude straight up under the snow so if you climb to the top of this mill and you slip you could be impaled. I say this because as its my job to educate you on the history of the wild west it is the west that can be the cause of your demise so we must let others know this mill can be dangerous especially in the winter. Like a fort I summated this beast only to do more research into its history finding out that it was regarded as one of the countries best equipped and most efficient silver cyanide mills ever built in the country.

The company was based out of New Jersey even alone on their property they had 11 claims covering 160 acres similar to how large the Tonopah Mining Company was on the other side of Oddie Peak. The Tonopah - Belmont Mining Company sunk two very deep shafts near the current mill site of 1,200' and 1,700' in depth with workings of nearly 39 miles. Just like the Tonopah Mining Company they also had to ship the silver ore mined here to Millers also till they built a 60 - stamp mill on site. That mill had a capacitiy of 500 tons and was active from 1912 -1923 until the depression brought things down to a halt. This was a massive mill even looking at historic vintage photos once can see that the birth of this mill made Tonopah the Silver Mecca of the west because all the rich finds could be brought immediately to the mill to be processed. With that being said mine production between 1900 to about 1921 totaled over $120 million with the best single year in 1913 when $10 million in silver, copper, lead and gold were pulled out of the mines. Tonopah was a true mining town unlike many other boom towns we have visited many minerals were pulled out of the mines here thus by WWII only four major mining companies were in operation. However, a massive fire in October of 1942 burnt down the Tonopah Extension Mill furthermore spreading to a nearby hotel causing 100k in punitive damages. By the time the war was over with even the mining companies had cleared out even worst in 1947 the Tonopah & Goldfield Railroad was no more as rails begin to be removed. No less the Tonopah - Belmont Mining Company was one of the largest mining and milling companies in the state of Nevada.

Today one could say there is still probably allot of Silver and Gold found within the mountains that surround this cozy little secluded desert town. But mining today is very minimal for example in 1968 Howard Hughes and his Summa Corp. purchased 100 claims in Tonopah which included the Silver Top, Desert Queen, Mizpah and I believe also the Montana mines. I guess Hughes was hoping for a revival lets face it never was pursued. A few samples were taken but rather then the mines were re timbered but never opened again. The total production was over $150 million dollars from the time Tonopah opened its first mines till present day. Of course in today's economy what was brought out of those mines would have been worth many more times what gold and silver went for back in the day. Thus besides the Comstock Lode in Virginia City which was the cream of the crop throughout the mid 1800's till about the 1880's Tonopah had risen to be the largest most profitable silver claim in the state of Nevada in the early 1900's. So when many mines were being exhausted throughout Nevada those miners came of course to Tonopah because work was readily available but for some of those miners their last days spent on earth were deep below in its mines. Which may attribute as to why Tonopah is one of the most haunted semi ghost towns in Nevada today.

Today the population in Tonopah stands at about 1,200 its not a ghost town but a semi-ghost town. It never had really ever been abandoned except for the mines, mills and a few scattered original structures found throughout the town.  Allot of people stop at Tonopah because its the half way point between Las Vegas and Reno really. So people might stop here for dinner or rest up for the night. But no boom town has as enriched history as Tonopah does and like every town it had its ups but it also had its downs over the years.  One can clearly see that when they tour the Old Tonopah Cemetery which was founded May 7th of 1901 with John Randel Weeks being the first interment here and one of the last to be buried in April 1911 because the dead outgrew the land used for a cemetery. Therefore a second cemetery would be erected down the road we have not done allot of work with it but I have driven through it and had gotten a photo for our viewers just to put it into perspective. The old cemetery had filled up quickly with the dead most of them pioneers of Tonopah who fell victim to the mysterious 1902 "Tonopah Plague" which nobody knew the cause of could have been rodents in my opinion or bacterial droppings. Other residents found here are fourteen miners who fell victim to the Tonopah - Belmont Mine fire of February 23, 1911 among them Big Bill Murphy who died saving many miners but he could not save himself at the age of 28 years old. Another burial is the grave of Nye County Sheriff Thomas Logan who was killed in a shoot-out in a Manhattan bordello. The cemetery in my opinion is one of the most haunted locations in Nevada that is why we captured such great EVP and Photographic evidence to confirm the tales passed around for many years by others who dared venture inside of it. Over 300 people are buried here children fell victim to the plague and over thirty strong men causing a mass exodus perhaps this is why Tonopah never really grew into a major city as the burial ground would be living proof of Tonopah's more difficult times. The fence you see surrounding the cemetery was not integrated till 1975 and I believe the very back of the graveyard was for Masonic members as they are more well to do.

While I enjoy discussing the paranormal I also enjoy sharing with our viewers tales about heroes. William A. "Big Bill" Murphy was a 28 year old cage operator who successfully descended into the Belmont Mine which was engulfed by fire. He descended twice successful to the bottom of the mine to help bring up confused and conscious co-workers to the surface. By the third descent he never returned to the surface and a total of 17 men lost there lives. The fire was not very large but the mine had close quarters therefore the air quality was poor. The Belmont Mine had two shafts the Belmont being upcast while the Desert Queen downcast. Smoke was first noticed by the cager almost at 6am and it took the miners nearly two hours almost to discover it which turned out to be at the bottom of a winze on the intermediate level which did not open into either shaft. Communication was by means of the winze or two raises to the level above. The fire was burning mine timbers which were piled up at the winzes bottom to be used in stope constructions. Nobody knows how it started but back in the day the miners used candles and stuffs so if someone forgot to put it out from the night shift from 4am and did not put it out then this may have been the results. So after a couple hours smoke began to fill a few parts of the mine especially the Belmont shaft so men descended instead down the Desert Queen shaft instead. All the miners begin leaving the mines the ones who did not were busy fighting the fire. The air currents ended up reversing themselves therefore the smoke ended up in areas of the mine that were deemed safe. The men more or less suffocated particular at shaft stations where they may have not been able to signal for a ride to the surface including for men who fell off the cage while being hoisted. The fire was put out that same day but by then it was to late and the next day the bodies would be recovered.

The story of Big Bill inspires me this man gave his life for his brethren he worked along side with despite the fact that the air below was not breathable. Big Bill carried these men on his shoulder because many of the miners were unconscious due to toxic gases and smoke filled air. Many of the men Big Bill rescued did not want to go back down the shafts they were coughing and needed medical attention. The only one who was courageous enough to descend was Big Bill himself who came forward giving others a signal to descent. He went down 1100' loaded the cage with confused and unconscious miners. He then came to the surface unloaded the men then descended a second time to save more men. By the third descent he never came back up and that saddens me in some sense. Imagine how great the world would be if all of us sacrificed ourselves for our fellow man that courage, selflessness and heart can only be found in a true hero. I made sure on my first project in Tonopah I visited the Desert Queen Mill/Mine, Tonopah Belmont Mine and of course the cemetery where these good men died on that fateful day. Being a paranormal investigator some might enjoy chasing ghosts as a hobby but I enjoy chasing history I know the ghost come with love and lost. Today if you visit downtown Tonopah you can see a statue of Big Bill carrying a miner in his arms near the post office dedicated towards the courage and sacrifice he made for his fellow miners. How many men would give their live to save others over a 1000' below the surface engulfed by toxic smoke? Ask yourselves that! Big Bill was a hero to the people of Tonopah. Today the head frame for the Desert Queen is one of the most prominent sites residing above Tonopah and most well in tact head frames in the state of Nevada.

Besides Big Bill many other notable people lived in Tonopah so lets talk about them because this town had its fair share of prominent memorable individuals. As we talked about Barbara Graham the notorious Butcher of Burbank aka "Bloody Babs" lived here we visited her small cabin above the Mizpah Mines. Graham was only one of four women executed in California. Then we have Andriza Mircovich the only prisoner to ever be executed by shooting in Nevada. Of course Tasker Oddie who also resided in nearby Belmont Nevada made his wealth here in Tonopah but he also was the 12th Governor of Nevada and a United States Senator. Then there is Stalking Cat a Body Modification Icon, Claire Fahy a pioneering aviatrix died here in 1930 after the airplane she was piloting crashed when the engine stalled at 50' on takeoff and William Robert Johnson a Romance Catholic bishop of Orange. Also Thomas Joseph Connolly another Roman Catholic Bishop lived here as well of Baker. A much more well known resident who lived here was Hugh Bradner who was a physicist and inventor of the neoprene wetsuit which helped revolutionize scuba diving something well used today to explore the depths of the ocean. A MD and Physicians also resided here from 1991 to 1995 who lived in Tonopah named T. Brian Callister who help reform our nationally known health care policies.

In 1910 gold production was falling in Tonopah and by 1920 the town had less then half the population it had in 1905. Therefore while the boom may have ended real estate and casinos is where the money was at. Rather then miners moving up to Tonopah you had an influx of military who moved in on the area because the Tonopah Test Range was the main source of employment locally. The military had used the range and surrounding areas to conduct nuclear test, bombing range and the base of operations for the development of the F-117 Nighthawk. Also in the fall of 2011 a California based solar energy company called SolarReserve started construction of this nearly 1 billion dollar solar energy project which can be see from the Montana Mill and Mine its called the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project. This is an amazing project because it would put Tonopah at the worldwide center of technology for this major class of solar energy storage. When it was completed in 2014 it brought in about 800 workers to the area for employment. Honestly, at any given time if you go into a Tonapah bar your going to meet other members of the US Military here some of them even work at Area 51 aka Groom Lake.

Not to far away maybe 15 minutes or less you can also visit the old Tonopah Army Airfield or as some they call it the airbase. The USAF/DOE called it the Tonopah Air Force Auxiliary Airfield or Tonopah Test Range Airport. During the cold was it was referred to as the Cold War Radar Station and during 1958 the Mud Lake Test Annex. No matter what you call it the airbase is full of ruins, hangars and history if your into exploring as much as I am into it. If you visit Tonopah you should take a ride out to the old airfield its amazing. See after WWI Nevada and other western inland states were surveyed by a Capt. Lowell H. Smith and Sgt. William B. Whitefield for land sites. After the project by 1925 the Air Service had information nearly 3,500 landing sites and more then 2,800 emergency landing areas in the US alone. In 1929 the McCarren Airfield north of Las Vegas known as Nellis was used by the Army Air Corps for training flights in the 1930's. After 1939 and the invasion of Poland the Western Site Board located an area in southern Nevada just outside of Tonopah Nevada and by 1940 they used it for a military range. In 1940 that same year in October a Air Corps Major David Schlatter surveyed the southwest United States for using this site as a military airfield. This 60 x 90 mile area near Tonopah was then transferred to the War Department on the 29th of October in 1940 by an Executive Order of the president of the United States. The 1940 Tonopah Airport Committee was then formed by the community to have an airstrip built here and the use of the range was delayed at least till December of 1941. The airfield could be used as its 1st base operation unit and for its Air Corps Gunnery School by June of 1941.

The Tonapah Airfield in 1944 was completed as it had gotten a 3 million dollar rendition which would turn the field into a base which would include new runways being built, water tanks for storage, additional quarters, barracks, new post exchange, supply buildings, crash stations, warehouses, massive wood hangars, school building, range facilities, operations buildings and aprons. The project and construction was completed by November of 1943 and fully in use by the end of WWII. Today the base contains three massive wooden hangars and a few ruins of the WWII era building foundations. Two of the runways are still in use and are maintained by Nye County Nevada and are now part of the Tonopah Airport but the Airbase itself is abandoned and received allot of attention from other local urban explorers like myself. If you travel around the airbase you will see brick chimneys left behind still standing that were used to vent the smoke from the coal furnaces to keep the military warm in the hangars. Their are also allot of ruins and foundations but not allot stands today its extensive ill leave at that though. More then likely some of that coal to heat the air hangars came from Coaldale Junction Nevada.

Another historical fact that not allot of people are aware of is that Charles Elwood "Chuck" Yeager became the first pilot confirmed to have exceeded the speed of sound during a flight supposedly at this very location. Yeager was known as a test pilot who commanded many types of aircraft included experimental rocket-powered aircraft. He flew the experimental Bell X-1 at Mach 1 at an altitude of 45,000' and eventually the fastest speed he flew was a Mach 2.44. Yeager spent sometime at the old Tonopah Airbase. During WWII he started off as a private in the US Army Air Force then eventually was an aircraft Mechanic and by 1942 he was training to be a test pilot eventually being promoted to the rank of Flight Officer which led him to become a P-51 fighter pilot in the war. His flying career spans over 60 years as he commanded flight squadrons in Germany, Southeast Asia in the Vietnam War, Soviet Union during the Cold War and testing aircraft all throughout Nevada. So when you visit the old airbase try to keep in mind that its very relevant to Tonopahs history after its boom days came to an end.

Not allot of people know this but Tonopah has one of the darkest skies in the country and is rated as the number 1 place to stargaze according to America in USA today. On a moonless night one can see easily seven thousand or more stars including the Milky Way its incredible really. You can even see stars as faint as a magnitude +7.0. This may be why so many paranormal investigators get drawn to visiting here. As a paranormal investigator I felt it was a must to kind of capture what Tonopah is like at night thus we created a night gallery which has its own section on our site here. There are parts of town you can hike on foot to such as the mill and mining sites that are so dark you cannot even see your hand in front of your face. Which allows for all things spooky to lurk within the darkness making this a very intimidating little mining town when the sun goes down. Personally I am not sure anything can be chasing the paranormal under a starry sky but because of this reason the Tonopah area is well known for its UFO sightings day or night. With Area 51 and other strange locations not to far away one can see why the skies are filled with objects that simply cannot be explained.

Tonopah is known for its strangeness if ghosts do not peak your interest or UFOs there is always The Clown Motel so if you are scared or you hate clowns this definitely would not be for the faint of heart. If you visit the motel the office is filled with five shelves of toy clowns staring at you from behind the desk. The rooms are full of clown paintings some hanging over the bed, clowns on the room doors and even a giant juggling clown rendered in pastel on a big sign by the highway saying bikers welcome. If that is not scary enough the motel is located right in front of the old Tonopah Cemetery where miners of the Belmont Mine Fire and Tonapah Plague were buried here and said to haunt the grounds. I have read allot of peoples stories about the hotel such as others claiming to have seen ghost, heard strange laughing some have even claimed to have been visiting the cemetery and were chased literally by a clown. I do think that some people do embellish or over exaggerate sure its strange and I believe its haunted not because of the clowns but due to the fact that the cemetery is emanating with paranormal activity just a few feet away from the motel guess rooms. If you do not find the clown motel strange you can perhaps find some strangeness at the missile range about thirty miles from here that the locals call Area 52 dude to its classified covert weapons test. What is even scarier then the clowns is that the Tonopah Test Range is also used to stockpile Nuclear Weapons but also firing weapons research and trials of nuclear weapon delivery systems. So is Tonopah strange? In a sense because there is something for everyone whether your into hiking, historical research, stargazing, ghost hunting, urban exploring, conspiracy theory chasing, ufology or simply just partying at one of the saloons downtown while drinking some ales.

Of course the Old Tonopah Cemetery and Clown Motel are not the only notorious haunted locations found in this old silver boom town. As a matter in fact many locations are haunted this is why I spent almost an entire week doing research here because I wanted to get it right for our viewers. Some people visit here stay an hour take a few photos and tell the world they investigated Tonopah. But as of now our website addition is one of the largest Tonopah Hubs on the web because we wanted to make an impact and share with the world this amazing gem hidden in the heart of Nevada. I read about allot of sites are haunted I had the chance to visit most of them and I am sure there are some I do not even know about unless your a local you will not know every secret this great place has to offer. I read that the Kozy Corner Deli and Coffee Bar is said to be haunted as food gets thrown or slung all by itself. Sometimes employees claim that the bell here also rings by itself and its believed that the owners father may be responsible for haunting this little business. One of the most haunted hotels known as the Mizpah Hotel can be found just a short walk nearby.

The Mizpah Hotel was built in 1907 containing five stories and Victorian is said to be haunted by prostitutes from its early days when they came to Tonopah to entertain the miners. It was named after the Mizpah Mine which really stood in the middle of town and everything else was built around it. In its early years many famous people have stayed here including Jack Dempsey, Howard Hughes and Wyatt Earp. They all had ties to the hotel for whatever reason but the most famous guest of all is The Lady in Red. I have heard allot of stories about the lady in red one is that she was beaten then strangled here by a jealous ex boyfriend another states she was killed by her husband after he caught her cheating on him but nobody knows for sure. The lady and red has been known to touch men's hair or even brush against them.  People have smelled her perfume lingering in the alls others have seen her apparition talking to a miner's ghost. Others who have stayed at the hotel have witnessed a blue greenish blue apportion of a woman and several other miner ghosts as well. Another story about the hotel is that a politician had died in one of the rooms on election night and when they found him deceased they put his body in the bathtub on ice waiting for the election results. Still till this day a ghostly man is seen laughing near some of the rooms bathtubs and perhaps the eeriest part of the hotel is the basement where many have seen several ghost of miners. The basement at one time had a vault in it for storing gold and silver bars therefore many miners who may have had stakes in the claims also had access to the vault.  I plan on eventually doing my own investigation of the Mizpah which is an entirely separate case but when we do will visit other paranormal sites that we may have not done research at on our first two investigations; so hopefully are viewers can get really excited about our upcoming projects in the future.

While there are many well known sites throughout Tonopah I read about one that has been happening for many years at the Silver Rim Elementary School on a hill above the town. As a matter in fact teachers including Principal Charles M. Keller from 1985 to 1992 have been sharing their stories for years about the strange happenings that have taken place here. For example lights going on and off for no reason whatsoever during the day and stranger things happening at night for staff who stayed after school hours. The faculty always felt as if someone was watching them some would hear strange sounds others even seen the apparition of a man. Principal Keller wrote a ghost story called "Jake, The Ghost" as a Halloween story for the children, teachers and staff back in 1985 his first year here. This is what brought up many of the stories which many teachers would not talk about until the principal wrote his story for everyone to read. A teacher who was working late one evening heard scuffing sounds or footsteps coming down the hall toward her classroom but when she exited the room to look down the hall nobody was there but they still kept getting closer. She was in fact so terrified she climbed out the window ran across the street to have one of the local neighbors call her husband for help. But why was the school haunted? Truthfully, not all buildings are haunted but rather the land the buildings sit on. We tend to forget that with many semi ghost towns old structures from the boom years get torn down and new buildings get constructed. This does not change the energy or what had happened previously on this land. Principal Keller in 2006 did more research on the property and may explain why the school is haunted.

You see back in 1903 there was Chinese race riot where the school now resides. Back in the boom town days the Chinese were treated awful that is because they worked harder and for less that really is the truth which angered local labor unions. During the riot a Chinese man by the name of Ping Ling was beaten really badly then hit over the right eye with a hatchet. He was disoriented so bad he began to walk out of town leaving the area bleeding on the road. The road is the same one that is between the Silver Rim School and the Mormon LDS Church. The school was built in 1980 of course many years later and this mans ghost haunts this area. Its possible he haunts many of the local residential homes surrounding the school also but if so not many have talked about it online that I could find. Most of the haunting's that take place at the school are not while class in session but generally when the teachers are staying late to work. The haunting's do continue till this day they are not harmful in anyway just your typical footsteps, doors closing, lights flickering and the occasional apparition seen nothing out of the norm at least for me being a paranormal investigator most of my life.

Tonopah had two well known railroads that ran through this bustling town. I had posted some train photos in our historic vintage gallery because I really wanted our viewers to get a feel for Tonopah's greatness during its boom years. In some sense Tonopah was a railroading town but if you were to visit today one may have not known it because the only series of tracks that remain are not far from Butlers claims. As a kid growing up I always was been fascinated with trains and steam engines. Tonopah was a bustling town with a very active railroad which allowed the miners and residents to have access to the outside world. The Tonopah Railroad Co. was incorporated in 1904 as a narrow gauge railroad that was built from Tonopah and connected to the old Carson & Colorado Railroad in Sodaville Nevada and Mina. The Southern Pacific Railroad company changed their narrow guarge to standard therefore a year later the Tonopah & Goldfield Railroad soon followed rebuilding the entire line. The railroad ran from Tonopah to Goldfield from 1906 and by 1947 it would be abandoned. The line was used to haul millions of dollars in gold and silver mined in these rich boomtowns. Believe it or not in 1939 the railroad petitioned the government for abandoned but with the war looming and an Army Air Base being built in Tonopah the government denied the petition. The railroad was in really bad shape locomotives needed repair and were inoperable therefore the US Army leased two diesel locomotives for the cause. The local Army airbase depended on the T&G for supplies and fuel the government at the time needed it more then the mines. Although when the T&G was operating it would stop in Coaldale Nevada to bring in coal from its mines to heat many of the miners cabins homes in 1904. The coal was poor grade so it ruined many grates and furnances at the time but without such a railroad importants would never have been possible.

When WWII was over the railroad returned the locomotives thus their only remaining motive power was a 1932 Ford Truck that was turned into a "Galloping Goose" those seen on the Rio Grande Southern Railroad. The railroads days were numbers while it was used to bus passengers and export/import some freight by 1947 the government granted permission for its abandonment. The railroad offered the town of Tonopah or its forefathers rather a city park which would have displayed some of the railroading relics but it just never transpired and everything had been removed tracks included. The only set of tracks resides near the Mizpah, Montana, Burro and Silver Top Mines where the railroad had its cars loaded with millions of dollars of precious metals brought up from the mines. The caretaker of the Tonopah Mining park told me that they hope to restore a portion of the T&G railroad perhaps by building a new line that might take visitors around the park itself or even beyond Tonopah. I would love to see this railroad operate once again the age of trains has nearly come to an end but back in the boom town days you had allot of short lines railroads throughout the state of Nevada which led to main lines; so technically you could travel anywhere in the country or to other mining towns in the region. The only existing piece of T&G rolling stock is a combine car that is found at the Nevada State Railroad Museum up in Carson City. Other then that the vintage photos definitely portray how popular this railroad was back in the day with crowds of people standing around the locomotives and at the train station. In a sense photos are really all that is left of this majestic railroad.

Another railroad that came to be a great success was the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad which operated from 1906 till about 1940. While it was not the main line in Tonopah the tracks did terminate here and in Goldfield. The T&T extended roughly 200 miles as it traversed the Mojave Desert from the Santa Fe Railway then from there to Ludlow California down through Death Valley and Armagosa Valley. Eventually it looped back to the mining towns in Nye County Nevada where the train ended up back in Tonopah. It was a standard gauge railroad and the headquarters were in Ludlow California not Tonopah but no less the railroad was still very iconic and Tonopah served as a major hub for its operation. The railroad was registered as a common carrier and was built by Francis Marion Smith known as the "Borax King" who owned the Pacific Coast Borax Company. Thus the railroad was used to export the borax to processing mills and to markets to be sold. The line reach Rhyolite, Bullfrog, Tecopa, Beatty and even Las Vegas in its heyday but it also a some seven mile branch that ran from its mainline at Death Valley Junction California up to the Lila C. Mine. If you explore ghost towns like we do then you may be lucky enough to find some remains of the railroad ties that still line the desert floor today but the rails are long gone.
From 1908 to 1914 the Bullfrog Goldfield Railroad, which also serving the mines around Beatty, was combined into the T&T, and then combined again in 1918 after the demise of the Las Vegas and Tonopah Railroad.

Tonopah is one of my favorite Silver Mining towns of the west along with Virginia City Nevada.  The original mining claims that Butler had found started a silver rush making it the "Queen of the Silver Camps" Jim and Bell Butler's strike in 1900 brought the United States into the 20th Century and many mining processing techniques were developed during that time are still being used today. During the early 1900's mining was often thought of as being a mans career very few women were ever involved with claims, processing ore or methodology. But Belle was not just the wife of Jim but she was a rancher and one of the only female miners during this time period to have claimed some of the richest silver mines in the world. Belle even had her own mine named after her who she partnered up with Tasker Odie and Wills Broughner to mine it for $25 really a drop in the bucket considering how much rich ore was brought up from it. Nearly two tons of ore was brought up from the mines then exported via mule team to Austin Nevada where then it could be smelted in Salt Lake a shor time later which in turn earned them $500 which then could be used for hiring miners and employees.

Tonopah is the meaning of the wild west it was in its early years and even today very little has changed except that its mines and railroads have ceased to exist no longer can they be heard by its locals. Today those that dare to explore this dark, eerie, fascinating historical silver town are in for a treat because honestly it is like stepping back into a time machine as out of all the mining towns I been to in Nevada Tonopah seems to be very extensive. This is a town most folks drive through heading to Las Vegas or leaving it but few ever realize that in the hills above Tonopah is an outdoor museum including all the relics of the past, head frames, mills, original miner cabins and many of the other sites we are portraying on our website for our viewers. While Tonopah may not have had the deepest mines in the world its success will never be forgotten or the rich history that surrounds this gem in the heart of Nevada.

::::::::::Warning PLEASE Be Advised::::::::::

Also please be advised although a little off topic there is a rest stop north of Tonopah Nevada its very remote but if you happen to stop there to use the restroom or even to lay down your head please use caution. For those who are not aware of this rest stop it is located on US - 95 Rte. 6 West 13.5 miles north of Tonopah Nevada also referred to as the Click Here: Map Of Millers Rest Stop. Millers at one time was a small milling camp that processed the Silver Ore in Tonopahs early mining days before stamp mills were built there. I believe there is a serial killer on the loose who may be responsible for the many disappearance in the region and Nye County the past few years. More or less those passing through who might be alone on the road traveling should be vigilante. The area is very remote at night its so dark at the rest stop that you can barely see your hand in front of your face. Over the past few years quite a few people have vanished without a trace around rest stops in rural Nevada.

As a paranormal investigator I could say its aliens which would be naive of me but the truth is that back in 2016 I was on the road from Vegas to Carson City late at night when a truck carrying an empty car dolly slowly pulled into the rest stop behind a woman sleeping in her vehicle. Her vehicle at the time was the only one parked at the rest stop it was dark. I believe the individual was getting ready to commit a crime it was late past midnight and when I pulled up I had gotten out immediately standing there staring at the individual in the truck. The pickup truck peeled off really fast then drove out in the middle of the desert behind the rest rooms and was watching me from the darkness they did not get out but instead waited for me to leave at that time I did not as I was concerned. That is when I pulled out my 40 caliber Smith & Wesson pistol and the individual sped off at a great speed in the parking lot behind us out of anger. I would have picked up my cam and filmed the incident but at the time I was worried about my girlfriend who was in the vehicle scared and felt that instead I might need to call the law or possibly stop someone thus I waited to film the vehicle and plate after the individual put some distance between us.

I had waited a few minutes to let the truck get ahead of us on the road however strangely ten minutes later I caught up to the vehicle and it begin to play cat and mouse with me. As I tried to pull ahead the vehicle would not let us pass then it slowed down driving half way in the shoulder of the road trying to get me to go around it in a no passing zone with tractor trailers coming towards us in the opposite direction. The strange thing about those that vanished in Nevada is often there vehicle is found at another location or sometimes the person and the vehicle simply vanishes. How is this done? The culprits often use car dolly's that way no prints are every left behind and the law cannot monitor rest stops because they can pinpoint crime at a location a persons vehicle is not at. I have posted a video which can be found by Clicking Here: Lord Rick Follows Suspicious Vehicle Near Tonopah Rest stop.

I believe this individual was in the process of committing a crime possibly getting ready to tow this woman's car from the rest stop using the empty car dolly. One must understand that more then often if your going to drive across Nevada with a car Dolly with a California license plate your going to be towing a vehicle behind it; especially if you are traveling in the middle of nowhere you have no purpose for an empty dolly. Not to say that the individual was not going to go buy a car somewhere else in Nevada but it still was very suspicious and we as Nevadans must look out for one another. To many people and there vehicles are often found missing or displaced. How this is done? More then likely not little green men from Mars beaming cars up to their flying saucers but instead psychos who might prey or take advantage of those who are on the road in a part of Nevada that lacks law enforcement, witnesses or even necessary help at a rest stop that is remote such as the one north of Tonopah.

Some of you may wonder why at the end of this wonderful article I have decided to include this information? Well as a paranormal investigator I go out all hours of the night I see allot of things over the years. I do not just see UFOs or Ghosts but I have seen people doing who use nightfall as a way to commit not so righteous deeds. Therefore, I have a moral obligation to say something since our site has millions of viewers. I know that our Tonopah addition will draw in hundreds of enthusiast who might take an interest in urban exploring or doing some paranormal research in Tonopah therefore we do want to warn those who might get on the road to travel up here to make sure A. They are not on the road let alone this rest stop at night alone B. Carry some form of protection such as a stun gun, firearm or even a durable pocket knife and C. Good cell phone service in case you do get a signal.

Tonopah is a popular place for those coming up from Vegas or down from Reno to explore the massive wood hangars at the Air Base or some just simply want to tour the Old Tonopah Cemetery behind the Clown Motel. Regardless if you decide to follow in my footsteps visiting some of these great sites in Tonopah heed my warning I have spent a long time on the road visiting remote ghost towns and other locations the individual that was casing this rest stop was up to no good. Therefore, that could have been me, you, a mother, grandfather, your son or daughter at that rest stop. If I did not intervene what would have happened to the individual sleeping in there vehicle? If you see a white pick up truck possibly silver in color with extended cab it has the license plate 6YSR967 near Tonopah or any rural rest stops throughout Nevada or California acting suspiciously please call local law enforcement or possibly the FBI immediately! Lets help keep Nevada safe for our adventurers and those enjoying the silver state!
