If you ever visited the city of Oakland California the most beautiful location of all nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains is the lovely Mountain View Cemetery. Its really not just a cemetery but a Park, Garden and Churchyard. In a sense its a world within a world because when you hike around here in these hills you really feel away from the chaotic city life. It almost seems as if the cemetery is untouched by the evils of mankind in comparison to the city of Oakland itself. Without trying to offend the good folks of Oakland I am one of these people who likes to experience the local culture and truly I am an explorer when it comes to my research. While exploring the city alone driving around for hours touring some of the local history I found quite a few neighborhoods near this graveyard were in disrepair such as piles of furniture in the middle of the road, rats everywhere, garbage on the sidewalks, paper everywhere, garbage bags scattered for miles all over the place, abandoned buildings, homeless everywhere, condoms on the streets, drug houses, gangs, heaps of junk surrounding homes with overgrown brush etc etc.

Sadly Oakland is beginning to look like a scene right out of the Walking Dead and its one of the dirtiest cities I ever toured. You can be traveling down a city street when all of sudden you have to swerve around a huge pile of furniture in the middle of the road such as mattresses or couches. Its not getting any better as a matter in fact worst therefore the only pristine location I found and serenity was within Mountain View Cemeteries gates! Oakland is in the middle of a crisis and nothing is being done about it. If the city was maintained as much as this gorgeous cemetery then Oakland would be a much more pleasant city therefore I think most of you can agree Mountain View may be one of the last remaining pristine locations on the east side of the San Francisco Bay. Although some might disagree and that is fine but I did do some fishing in Oakland catching a boot, tampon and diaper so you tell me? So when folks really delve into our cemetery addition keep in mind we almost must do our part to preserve and maintain our cities. While the rest of Oakland seems to be peril such issues are nonexistent in Mountain View therefore we are so happy to bring our viewers this historical beautiful burial ground designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.

Mountain View Cemetery is 224 acres while two of the acres were deeded to Jacob Letter who erected the Temple Sinai Home Of Eternity Cemetery within its gates. Many historical and prominent figures are interred here. Today allot of people visit the cemetery to jog, walk their dogs, photograph nature, visit their loved ones, hike or take in the beautiful views of the San Francisco bay from afar. The cemetery has thousands of graves, gardens, mausoleums and several chapels. Cemetery Creek also known as Glen Echo Creek flows through here which tends to draw in allot of wildlife considering that further downstream the creek is dammed off to create three reservoirs. If your looking to see nature in its abundance there is nowhere your going to see it as much in the city of Oakland as you will here. Its not to often you can visit a cemetery and see so much wildlife but with the creek passing through here along with dense foliage it tends to draw in allot of nature.

It all started however in 1857 when a Dr. de Tavel offered the city of Oakland 10 acres of land to be used for a cemetery and that same year the cemetery ordinance was passed by the city council which accepted the doctors offer. Oakland and San Francisco were two growing cities however death was on a rise as well. Many of the emigrants who came here simply had gotten sick epidemics were on a rise and life was still harsh in the cities early years. Just a short time later the property was acquired by Reverend Isacc H. Brayton and Edward Tompkins. Tompkins petitioned the city council in 1863 that burials should no longer be permitted within the city therefore requesting that the cemetery should be closed with the owners released with the owners released of all obligations to maintain that cemetery open as a public burial ground. We can see similar circumstances occur in San Franscico's historical timeline as well that burials occurred within the city till the Golden Gate Cemetery was erected which today is present day Fort Miley. Therefore the old Webster Street Cemetery was becoming full and within the growing city of Oakland. With it being only ten acres in size a much larger cemetery and long term plan would be needed.

Therefore meetings begin to transpire at the home of Dr Samuel Merritt to create the Mountain View Cemetery Association which was composed of 12 men who were also very influential to Oaklands history. Honestly all the men were east bay pioneers who came here from other cities via stagecoach and they probably seen death on their journeys. Cemeteries were of great importance during the mid 1800's in the wild west. If you were not buried in a cemetery then chances are you were buried just about anywhere which often is what led to the citizens of the bay area to opt for the construction of a city cemetery for their loved ones. Back in the mid 1800's Fires broke out, murder was on a rise, epidemics occurred and more the often bizarre accidents. If those did not kill you the mountains of California and Nevada did! Under the Rural Cemetery Act Of 1859 the men were able to to form a city graveyard on the outskirts of Oakland. At the time were the cemetery was erected their were no residential homes nearby some may have even considered it the country before the city had grown so large.

Reverend Isacc H. Brayton was one of the men who originally co-owned the land to the old Webster Street Cemetery was attending the meetings as well to become a part of the cemeteries association. Brayton also at one time was the principal at UC Berkely College and was said to have sold the very land that has become a part of Mountain View Cemetery. Dr. Samuel Merritt one of the lead trustees when forming the association was elected president of it as well. Another trustee Hiram Tubbs was elected treasurer and J.E. Whitcher was elected Secretary in 1864 all hand a hand in this project. With that being said the location of Mountain View Cemetery would be erected in the foothills on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Mountains just outside the city limits. Bonds then would be issued for the purchase of the land and Frederick Law Olmsted was commissioned to design the cemetery grounds.

Olmsted designed New York's Central Park and was at the time America's leading landscape architect. His designs were meant to express a harmony between man and the natural setting. Therefore, this cemetery does exactly that as in between all those interred here are gardens, fountains, large trees, tiers and meadows. Its hard to believe how different the city of Oakland is in comparison to this gorgeous graveyard but historically both go hand in hand! Olmsted also had also designed UC Berkeley and Stanford University both prestige colleges surrounded by beautiful landscapes. In addition to the universities he was responsible for designing
the Capitol grounds in Washington D.C. and even Yosemite National Park. This man was talented and simply bloody brilliant a figure that most schools should discuss as architects in the 1800's were shaping most of Americas national sites of interest with Olmsted being one of them!

In 1864 Reverend S.T. Wells was voted in as Mountain View Cemeteries 1st Superintendent which he held till 1870. He would be replaced by a William Collins meanwhile General R.W. Kirkham was elected President of the Board Of Trustees's replacing Dr. Samuel Merritt. Early on in the cemeteries history many positions were held, appointed and its first few years it begin to experience massive growth. Dedication of the cemetery took place on May 25th 1865. The first interment that took place here was in July 1865 named June Weir. Within a decade at least 2,000 were interred here and the cemetery experienced a growth spirit. As the trustees and association suspected that 200 acres would be large enough to provide burial to the citizens of the city of Oakland. Today their are over 170,000 interments found here making it one of California's largest cemeteries.

It also has many notable individuals who were buried here such as the chocolate king Domingo Ghiradelli, Oakland Mayor Samuel Merritt after whom Lake Merritt was named, Hearst Castle architect Julia Morgon, big four railroad tycoon Charles Crocker, Anthony Chabot, founder of the Chabot Observatory, William Deger a show manufacturer who became Oakland's first millionaire, key system founder Francis Marion "Borax" Smith, three California governors, ill-fated lovers Alexander and Josphine Dunsmuir of the Dunsmuir House and Elizabeth Short also known as "Black Dahlia" who was the victim of an unsolved brutal murder in Hollywood. Shorts body was discovered near Laimert Park in a vacant lot mutilated and cut in half on January 15th 1947. She was placed there nude, detectives also found her body to have been cleaned and all the blood had been drained elsewhere. More then likely her killer was probably a skilled doctor and probably was responsible for quite a few murders. Today the Black Dahlia murder is one of the longest standing cold cases in Los Angeles. Today Shorts grave can be found in Mountain View although I did visit her gravesite if you want to pay your respects this is where she was interred at.

Many of California's historical figures are also found in this cemetery some were personal friends with Olmsted. As a matter in fact when Olmsted designed the layout for the cemetery he saved an area on a hill overlooking the city as a tribute to those with power and wealth. It was often refereed to as the Millionaires Row which has many grandiose crypts and tombs. As a matter in fact most of the cemetery tours transpire within the Millionaires Row but in my opinion their are many other intriguing parts of the cemetery as well. For example their is an entire section which contains Civil War veterans which also boast cannons dating back to that era of time. Their are also three pyramid mausoleums and tombs found throughout Mountain View more then any other cemetery in the US. Pyramid Mausoleums began trending after Napoleon invaded Egypt in the early 1800's.

Not to far away from the cemetery is all the Chapel of the Chimes Columbarium designed by Julia Morgan. It has many rooms which surrounded naturally lit areas with an interior garden. You can see the Columbarium from the top of most of the hills which surround Mountain View its really not that far away. It almost has a Gothic architecture and for those that do not end up being buried in Mountain View there ashes are often added to the hundreds of Niches found within the Columbarium's marble halls. I do have plans to bring our viewers the Columbarium onto our website in the future but for now the first leg of our project was to research Mountain View which has served the people of Oakland for over 150 years. Their is allot of history that surrounds Mountain View that includes the Home Of Eternity & St. Mary's Catholic Cemeteries which border one another. If you stand above the Millionaires Row not only will you be able to soak in some nice city scapes but it puts the size of the cemetery into perspective as you peer down on Mountain View, Chapel Of Chimes Columbarium and two other historic cemeteries! The Chapel Of Chimes Columbarium almost looks like the Neptune Society Columbarium in San Francisco do not get the two confused I almost did!

Today the same cemetery association that was formed over 150 years ago still owns and maintains these grounds. These hills are riddled with native oaks and imported Italian Stone Pines. Their are quite a few gardens here and many other trees including Lebanese Cedar and Italian Cypress. The roads and paths are always winding or curvy to resemble similarity to tributaries or the park cemeteries often found in England. This burial ground is one of the finer examples of a true garden cemetery found here on the west coast. Olmsted believed that nature and humans destinies are intertwined or rather man is not in nature but is nature. What a perfect way to honor the dearly departed by creating an atmosphere where death is beautiful and life continues to thrive on! Below I posted a list of notable figures buried within the cemetery courtesy wikipedia along with an article pertaining to the Black Dahlia Murder Case. I try to use our website as a force for good were not just a paranormal group but more important then the ghosts is preservation but also a much more broader message that we try to put out there through our work. Mark my words if you happen to visit Oakland California if your not much into the urban life Mountain View is certainly a retreat from it all!

I heard that Mountain View is haunted a few other groups have gotten EVP here like us and have gathered a few of their own paranormal experiences. For example I read a story about a man driving through the cemetery and hearing some ghostly singing near the Crocker Crypt one of the most expensive monuments found here. I have also heard of people seeing ghost lights here at night and hearing strange noises. Supposedly their is a place within this cemetery called Strangers Plot or rather a hill with quite a few unmarked graves or known as a potters field. Most of the people buried here died of drowning, being hung, gunshot wounds and even explosions. Twenty two of the bodies found in this plot were men killed in an 1880 dynamite blast at Fleming Point in nearby Berkeley with a plaque that reads unknown bodies from 14th and Harrison. Others who are interred here are dozens of infants maybe even hundreds and a lone tombstone of a man named William Holmes Mabien who killed himself on Christmas Eve 1871 and was buried off by itself because suicide was considered a sin and those that did it were not buried near any other graves of people who died naturally. While many graves are grandiose others did not have it so well so when you walk through Mountain View it tells a story about the rich and famous but it also tells one for those who lived much more tragic lives and today their ghost still might haunt these hills in hopes of others not forgetting them. Most of us tend to visit the Millionaires Row because its the most elegant often neglecting the early
pioneers who came to Oakland and led difficult lives. I also heard that the Black Dahlia Gravesite is haunted and its possible that her spirit is still awaiting justice we simply do not have all the answers. But what I do know is that everyone one of the people buried here came with a tale and there spirits may live amongst the nature which is found throughout this hillside retreat where the dearly departed are laid to rest.

Black Dahlia Biography

(1924–c. 1947)
Nicknamed "the Black Dahlia," Elizabeth Short was brutally murdered in Los Angeles in 1947, her body cut in half and severely mutilated. The Black Dahlia's killer was never found, making her murder one of the oldest cold case files in L.A. to date, and the city's most famous.

Synopsis

Nicknamed "the Black Dahlia," Elizabeth Short was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 29, 1924. Twenty-two years later, Short, an aspiring actress, was brutally murdered in Los Angeles, California, her body cut in half and severely mutilated. Her body was found on January 15, 1947, in a vacant lot near Leimert Park. The Black Dahlia's killer was never found, making her murder one of the oldest cold case files in L.A. to date, as well as the city's most famous.

Early Life

Elizabeth Short, best known as "the Black Dahlia," was born on July 29, 1924, in Boston, Massachusetts, the third of five daughters born to Cleo and Phoebe Mae (Sawyer) Short. Cleo Short abandoned the family when Elizabeth was 5 years old. At a young age, Short developed a strong affinity for cinema. By her teens, she had set her sights on becoming an actress.

The Black Dahlia Murder

By the mid-1940s, Elizabeth Short was living in Los Angeles, California, working as a waitress to support herself while dreaming of catching her big break into Hollywood's acting scene. Her chance at stardom, however, would never come. In January 1947, a horrific tragedy occurred: At the age of 22, Short was brutally murdered in Los Angeles, her body cut in half and severely mutilated. Her body was found, nude and posed, by a local female resident on January 15, 1947, in a vacant lot near Leimert Park, on the 3800 block of L.A.'s South Norton Avenue. "It was pretty gruesome," Brian Carr, a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department who has long worked on the Dahlia case, later said. "I just can't imagine someone doing that to another human being." In addition to dissecting and mutilating her body, Short's killer had drained her corpse of blood and scrubbed it clean.

The case quickly became heavily covered by the media (her moniker, "Black Dahlia," became widely known shortly thereafter, as it was used more frequently than her real name by the press). "The case itself took on a life of its own," Carr said. "Early on, I think for two months it was front-page news in all the local papers every day."

An in-depth, lengthy investigation by the L.A.P.D. ensued, leading to a number of false reports—including several false murder confessions—and ultimately leaving detectives grasping at straws. The sole witness of the murder had reported seeing a black sedan parked in the area in the early morning hours, but could provide police with little else. The combination of faulty witnesses and a lack of hard evidence surrounding the case greatly hindered its progress, and, despite numerous allegations and leads over the years, the Black Dahlia's killer was never found. Today, the Black Dahlia murder remains one of the oldest cold case files in L.A., as well as the city's most famous.

Recent Case Developments

In early 2013, the Black Dahlia case returned to the headlines. An article in the San Bernardino Sun detailed a more recent investigation of the case that was conducted by retired police seargant Paul Dostie, author Steve Hodel, and a police dog named Buster with a keen sense of smell—specifically that of decomposing flesh, which he was trained to detect. According to the Sun, the investigative team has uncovered incriminating evidence against Hodel's father, Dr. George Hill Hodel, who the younger Hodel has long believed to be the Black Dahlia killer. In February 2013, the team conducted an extensive search of the doctor's home, where Buster had previously detected the scent of human decomposition in several areas of the basement, according to reports. Following their search, soil samples taken from Dr. Hodel's home were reportedly submitted for lab testing.

Other evidence against George Hodel, according to his son, includes an old recording of a conversation between the doctor and an unknown person, during which Dr. Hodel allegedly stated, "Supposin' I did kill the Black Dahlia. They couldn't prove it now. They can't talk to my secretary because she's dead."
