The copper domed Neo-Classical architecture Columbarium was built in 1898 by an architect by the name of Bernard J.S. Cahill. A columbarium is a repository for human ashes very similar to a mausoleum only on a much larger scale. It was built to accommodate the Crematorium Cahill designed in 1895 as they both resided within the Old Odd Fellows Cemetery which was a massive 167 acres of interments many who perished in the 1906 earthquake and fires that rained over San Francisco. Today it is the only non-denominational burial place within city limits.

When 1902 rolled around the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance to prohibit the sale of cemetery lots or allow further burials. I do not know the reason behind it maybe it was growing in size to quickly. I know that space was very limited within the city so land was a huge commodity even back a century ago. In 1910 cremation was then banned thus the crematorium was rendered useless therefore no more urns or ashes would be permitted at the Columbarium. The Odd Fellows Cemetery Association was forced to abandoned their cemetery opening up a new one called Green Lawn up in Colma.

By the year of 1929 the entire 167 acres of the Odd Fellows Cemetery including its mausoleums would be exhumed and the bodies would be transferred to Green Lawn Cemetery. I am sure thousands of human remains were moved in the process but I am also sure that not all bodies would be exhumed either. Not all graves had markers and most of the gravestones as well as the mausoleums were used to build a seawall in the Aquatic Park District. The park today is used for fishing and of course the National Maritime Park along the Hyde Street Pier another location we investigated. In some way I cannot help feel that this is a bit morbid afterall these epitaphs were represented the deceased and now were part of a sea wall where visitors could stand on.

In 1929 out of fear that the Columbarium would be demolished many of the families began to remove their families urns and ashes from it. They would move them to another mausoleum within the city limits. The Columbarium ended up being the only remnants remaining of the Odd Fellows Cemetery so make sure you check out our Lost section so you can see the exhumation and what the burial grounds looked like over a century ago. Keep in mind that ONLY the Columbarium now remains along with many businesses and homes that surround it. Which in theory may be why the area is haunted not just the Columbarium but perhaps many of the structures that stand on hollowed ground.

Eventually the Columbarium was sold to the Bay Cities Cemetery Association and later Cypress Abbey unfortunately as it was passed down to various organizations it deteriorated. The Columbarium was in such poor shape that in 1980 when the Neptune Society of Northern California purchased it they had to began restoration. Only in 1996 was it added to the register of San Francisco's Landmarks and as of today their are construction projects which are building new mausoleums surrounding this site just as a century ago.

Today within the Columbarium are over 9000 niches that contain personal memorabilia, pictures, jewelry, tea pots, decanters, piggy banks, stuffed animals, cookie jars etc to reflect the individuals personality. Each niche nearly tells a story as if you were entering a museum of the deceased which not only makes it interesting but kind of sad to. Unlike a cemetery where their is a mound of dirt, flowers and a head stone the niches found here depict a much deeper story.

Cahill who designed the Columbarium may have been inspired by the Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago as baroque and neoclassical features can both be found. The diameter from the entrance to the stained glass window across from it is 64'. The width of the rotunda or rather inner circle is 29' and the rotunda reaches a height of about 45'. Above the Rotunda is a stained glass dome which looks down upon its floors below.

Their are eight rooms on the ground floor each one named after a mythological wind. Six of the eight rooms contained beautiful stained glass windows depicting religious works of art. The one window in the Aquilo room depicts three angels in flight which is attributed to Louis Comfort Tiffany or John LaFarge. The first floor rooms are named after constellations then the second and third floors are smaller and simpler in nature. The first , second and third floors you can view the rotunda below as the very top floor is enclosed circling the copper dome internally.

Today many notables can be found here such Harry August Jansen known as Dante the Magician or Jerry Juhl the muppateer and writer of the Muppets. Then you have Dorothea Klumpke an astronomer and mathematician. You also have Harvey Milk the first openly gay man elected to public office and Edward Robeson Taylor the 18th Mayor of San Francisco. Amongst others would be George Ainslie a congressional delegate from Idaho and even Frank E. Hill a US Army officer during the American Indian Wars receiving a Medal Of Honor. Then their is always Chet Helms a music promoter and father of San Francisco's 1967 "Summer Of Love" Based on my first exploration I found musicians, authors, politicians and even celebrities which makes the Columbarium a rather unique place.

Not only is it unique but there are other energies at work here not sure if its due to the fact that the entire cemetery was moved at one point in time or the fact that their are so many colorful interments found here all with different religious views. Not everyone found here believed in heaven and hell some believed in the afterlife while others believed in nothing at all. Some of the personal items found in the niches may be responsible for keeping someone's spirit around and alive. I found based on my first investigation allot of strange little sounds that we recorded and EMF readings although rare seemed to go off around a deceased mans childhood teddy bear.

Every niche and urn within has a story to tell where their is history their is also ghosts. Where their are ghosts their is also a past. The Columbarium had a rocky past and today exuberates personality with each and every interment found here. Not only is this one of the finest pieces of architecture within San Francisco but it also is all that remained of the once monolithic hilly Odd Fellows Cemetery.
