St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery was erected to serve parishes in Oakland, Alameda and Berkeley since 1863. As a matter in fact this cemetery was established two years prior to Mountain View and The Home Of Eternity Cemeteries were erected which border St. Mary's to the south. While many state that this was the first Catholic Cemetery to be established in Oakland this is simply not the case nor is it the oldest. The original Catholic Cemetery was erected in the 1850's back when the city of Oakland was more of a small town. A common practice in most small towns during the pioneers days was to erect small cemeteries which were an acre or two. In this case the first Catholic Cemetery probably became overcrowded therefore 42 acres of land would be used on the outskirts of Oakland for a much larger needed cemetery.

Today the cemetery is over 150 years old during a celebrated mass of its anniversary in 2013 a new statue of the Virgin Mary and new monument for the last governor of Alta California Juan Bautista Alvarado were revealed. The first person to be interred here is Mary Riley whose grave is unmarked. Very little is known about her about except that she was born in 1824 and was 39 years old a native of Ireland. The second person buried here was a Timothy Murphy that very same year also a native of Ireland who passed away at the age of 72 years old and was born in 1788. The one thing I always remind myself of when I visit these grave sites is that these were once people too who had families and were an intricate part of Oakland's history. Most of the people buried in St. Mary's came here from other countries particularly Ireland, Germany and Italy. As a matter in fact many of the graves found here have epitaphs written in Italian and other languages.

Despite the fact that it served at one time one parish in Oakland known as the St. Mary's Parish at the time it was the mother church for the Catholic Cemetery. Since then though that has changed now many who are interred here derive from other parishes in the bay area. Oakland was not always a large city it started off as a small little pioneer town and as more people emigrated across the ocean to the bay area they begin to settle here. Therefore the parish needed a cemetery where they could bury there members of the Catholic faith. In a sense it is a sad place many of those interred here are children who died mainly of epidemics with angels that have sad faces or infants being cradled by Jesus. Some of those angels are missing arms or even wings while nearly all the doors to the crypts are missing due to vandals and grave robbers. No less this is a beautiful hilly cemetery that overlooks the city of Oakland and San Francisco.

Their also is allot of prominent individuals buried here afterall St. Mary's is truly a place of tradition, culture and history. At one time Domingo Ghiradelli's granddaughter and family was buried here.  Domingo Ghiradelli founder a chocolate company which today continues to operated some of you may at one time have had some treats I love the dark chocolate brownies so good. Anyhow, in 1879 his teenage daughter Aurelia became very ill and on her deathbed a Catholic priest from the parish refused to administer her last rights. Nobody really knows why its very unlikely the priest was acting out of malice however I read that he may have been drunk or weather played a factor or that the church felt the family was not giving enough to the church.  The poor girl died and did not receive her last rites therefore Domingo forbidden the entire family from ever attending St. Mary's Catholic church again. Domingo was a very wealthy Masonic member and influential man in the bay area therefore he had amazing family crypt built in Mountain View Cemetery as the Vatican forbids Catholics from being Freemasons. Then one very late night Domingo along with his sons took a wagon to St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery moving all the Ghiradellis buried here including Aurelia's grave in a sense the story really had taken quite a morbid turn. Ghiradelli somewhat acted out of spite more or less he just did not see eye to eye with the local parish. If you visit our Mountain View Cemetery addition you can see his crypt in the Millionaire's Row and Notable Interments sections.

Also buried here is the Peralta family Luis Maria Peralta was a soldier for the Spanish Government in Mexico and owned a large chunk of land along the east side of the San Francisco Bay or what would have been most of Oakland today. Their are at least 75 Peralta's interred here and there is even the Peralta Hacienda Museum which is also a historic site. So when your walking around St. Mary's you will see the Peralta name rise to the occasion often. Also if you will find an Virginie and Edward R
émillard are buried here. The brothers started a brick company in Oakland and those bricks were used everywhere throughout the bay area. Chances are many of the old brick buildings found across the city utilized the bricks that were fired up by the Rémillard Company. However the most notable burial found within St. Mary's is Mexican Colonial Governor of California Juan Bautista Alvarado who was appointed to the California legislature in 1934. As a matter in fact in 1836 he was involved with a revolt that had overthrown Nicholas Gutierrez as the governor then took his place in Alta California. When California became a state and was no longer under Mexican rule Alvarado lived out his days as an American after Mexico had been ousted. Another notable interment is Slip Madigan the linebacker who placed for Knute Rockne at Notre Dame then later took over as the Coach of St. Mary's College in 1921 and led one of the best football teams till about 1940. These are just some of the notable figures your going to find buried here on the hills of St. Mary's. Below I have posted more in depth history on some of the notable figures found here make sure you check it out all were members of the parish which in turn buried them within St. Mary's Cemetery.

I read that St. Mary's is full of strange mysteries which makes it such an intriguing place to explore. I am sure its also haunted although our first investigation did not reveal much I am sure if anyone were to work with this place long enough they would find the ghost of the Peralta Family haunts these hills. Then again St. Mary's overlooks Temple Sinai's Home Of Eternity Cemetery while being overshadowed by the grandiose Mountain View Graveyard. In total between all three cemeteries there are easily 300,000 interred in these hills as far as how many of those found within St. Mary's though remains a bigger mystery. A log book in 1963 stated that their were nearly 25,000 interments however at the time it was the 10th log book and was the first of its kind to keep count.  Previous log books prior to this revealed roughly 63,000 graves prior to the tenth and together combined would almost total 90,000 interments. To make matters worst the 1850 census was destroyed in a fire therefore records stood at the time as incomplete therefore so very little is known about some of the early pioneers who were interred here.

Other notable people who were interred here are Mary Canning who dated over $120,000 to fund the construction of St. Francis De Sales Church the diocese's first cathedral, James J. Kenney, first fire chief of Berkeley, William Toler who was the first individual to raise an American Flag when California became a state, Delilah Beasley a columnist and historian who became the first African American to have pieces published regularly for a major metropolitan newspaper with the Oakland Tribune and even George Hyde mayor of San Francisco before California became a state. This cemetery has allot of relevant figures who impacted the bay areas history and they were your hardcore Catholics. I have a deep love myself for Catholic Cemeteries perhaps its due to all the beautiful angels and crosses. It would appear that the church and those often buried in Catholic burial grounds take allot of pride in the monuments they boast. More or less statues of saints, angels, children and crypts were works of art. In a sense this is a cemetery where others have taken allot of pride in there graves and to uphold Catholic tradition. Over the years of journeying I have seen many beautiful Catholic Cemeteries and this truly is within my top ten during my journeys definitely worth a gander to uncover its mysterious. Sure its not as grandiose as the Mountain View Cemetery next door but then again St. Mary's was not designed by Frederick Law Olmsted either!

In 1836 he became involved in a staged bloodless revolt that overthrew Mexican California Governor Nicholas Gutierrez. In Gutierrez's place, Alvarado was appointed the new Governor of Alta California serving until December 1837, when the Mexican government replaced him with Carlos Antonio Carrillo. In 1838, Carrillo was forced out of California and Alvarado was reappointed Governor serving until 1842, when he was again replaced, this time by Gen. Manuel Micheltorena. In 1844, the Californios revolted against Micheltorena and in February 1845, an army under the command of Alvarado and Gen. Jose Castro ousted him from the post at the Battle of La Providencia and appointed Pio Pico the new Governor. He retired form public life following the American takeover of California during the Mexican American War. (Bio by: G.Photographer)Saint Marys Cemetery, Oakland, Alameda County, California, USA
