Within the Virginia Range in Nevada is home to Virginia City and merely above it are two great peaks that at one time served as a focal point for silver and gold mining within the Comstock Lode. Also the view from neither of the vantage points deserve a spot within the top ten scenic views in the state of Nevada. Most folks who wander around Gold Hill, Silver City, Virginia City etc really have no idea that its an entirely different world up here as wild mustangs run wild and ghost of the miners wander aimlessly these hills above town.

Mount Davidson and Ophir Hill are the two highest peaks found within the Virginia Range but also they overshadow Virginia City below. While one is perhaps going out to dinner, chasing the paranormal, drinking a beer, off roading, hiking or merely sitting on your front porch everyone is able to see the giant V on the side of Mount Davidson which at night is lit up. Not much has changed prominent historical figures like Mark Twain mention this mountain in his book "Roughing It" for example. But back in the day when the first settlers came to the region they called this Sun Peak. Ophir Hill just below it resides on the other side of the saddle of Mount Davidson so really the two are one of the same considering their relevant geology that overshadow the town below.

The entire reasoning behind this project is so I could put the area into perspective for our viewers. Standing at the top of the Virginia Range let alone Mount Davidson I can see multiple paranormal and haunted locations our society has done research into. Its amazing to stand above Virginia City and see over forty locations that include peaks you have summated, mills, mines and historic sites that you been to. Without a doubt despite this factor atop of the Virginia Range is truly like being in another world that so very few get to see.  This world contains wild horses, high desert forest, snowcapped peaks, pristine views of multiple valleys and cities. As a matter in fact on a clear day you can see for at least 200 miles.

I enjoy adding projects like this to our website for many good reasons one of them is it gets you the viewer to get off your couch and actually see some of the locations we have done. Nobody would know about certain places if we did not share our work or the beauty of what we do. I spend allot of time in Virginia City I guess you can say in a sense that is my stomping grounds but what I do not see there is people who explore above town as a majority of people are often glued to tourism when in fact little do they know the wilderness awaits them just a short hike or jeep road above them.

Mount Davidson standing at 7,864' is the highest point in Storey County Nevada it stands perched directly above Virginia City Nevada. They may have called it Sun Peak over a century ago because the sun does set directly over it at dusk. This is the highest mountain in the Virginia Range. As a matter in fact if you stand on top of it you will get 360 degree views of the entire range. On a clear day one can see Reno, Carson City, Dayton, Gold Hill, Silver City, Mound House, Washoe City and Sparks Nevada. Their are also great views of Eagle Valley, Washoe Valley, Pine Nut Mountains, Stillwater Mountains, Tule Peak, Jobs Peak, Genoa Peak, Hobart Peak, Carson Sink, Dayton Valley, Washoe Lake, various Peaks of the High Sierras, Sugarloaf Mountain, Great Basin views and many other numerous landmarks. Surrounding Mt Davidson are smaller peaks such as Ophir Hill and Mount Bullion which can all be accessed close by.

Back in the day Ophir Hill, Mount Bullion and Davidson were sites of heavy mining. Even today if you hike around you will find some collapsed mine shafts, dump piles and a few fenced off tunnels. Really that is all remains of the intense mining that once transpired near these peaks and within the canyons which surround them. But at one time stamp mills, miners, mines, shafts and private cabins filled these hillsides. As a matter in fact some of the shafts near the peak of Mount Davidson ran for 2000' underground which connected with tunnels systems that the miners could take under the city to get to where they had to go. A good example of miners using such shafts to descend under the city would be the Chinese who were often heavily discriminated upon. Therefore they would mine the shafts of Mount Davidson all day and by the evening rather then walk the streets which were dangerous they took a tunnel which came out in China Town.

Mark Twain who at the time worked for the Territorial Enterprise would often smoke a cigar out front and stare up at Mount Davidson. I also hear he summated it on one occasion then again many of the towns folks in the 1800's tried to make the climb to the top yearly. I cant say I blame them back then you did not have cell phones or computers it was merely you verses nature that is how the locals entertained themselves. Mark Twain noted in his book "Roughing It" that he seen a flagpole on the summit which the flag was flown every 4th of July. I believe that very same flag pole still stands on the summit today therefore it is a piece of American History worth visiting besides the stellar views. Also at the peak is a written memorial by a Virginia City fireman and a tribute to the victims of 911.

This is a rewarding journey only a true Nevadan could really understand the value of this mountain range which extends 30 miles from north to south and nearly 40 miles East to West. It is like no mountain range in Nevada due to its size alone while most Nevada ranges have a distinct north-south running ridge the Virginia Range has no single ridge and generally runs southwest-northeast. The Virginia Range is often confused with the Virginia Mountains which are located north of the Pah Pah Range and 25 miles north of the Virginia Range which more then often folks get the two confused. The southeast part of the range however which is mostly north of US Highway 50 is considered part of the Flowery Range a sub range connected to the Virginia Range. Its highest summits can be seen from Reno and even Carson City. As a matter in fact Mount Davidson, Ophir Hill and Mount Bullion all can be seen from nearby towns below.  All three of the ranges tallest peaks we journeyed on all found within this addition on our website.

I remember hearing years ago before people begin moving up into Washoe Valley that bigfoot sightings were occurring in the region back in the day. Of course many years ago the Virginia Range had allot more tree cover but lumbering, fires and drought have diminished this ranges beauty over the years. As a matter in fact when people begin to flood the valley and Reno the sightings being to taper off. In theory the only thing separating the Virginia Range and the High Sierras are simply a valley which you can see across standing atop peaks like Mount Davidson. At one time log flumes ran all the way from the woodsy snowy sierras across the valley to the Virginia Range. It was quite a ride remember hearing a story about a Comstock Miner who decided to ride in one of the flumes for nearly 12 miles. I believe he road one of them all the way from Hobart Reservoir to Virginia City said it was the wildest yet scariest ride of this life. Imagine riding the log flume at Six Flags but its 100 times taller and longer!

Let me just add that the Virginia Range is a place of legends while maybe Bigfoot is no longer sighted here I believe that there is something strange that resides in this range even still today. Maybe it lives in the mines or some caves but years ago when my son and I did some extensive research in the Flowery Mountains which is a sub range found within the Virginia Mountains we came across something that no human could have ever made. We were up on some snowy cliffs trying to get around the range to hike to a lake found just below Virginia City. Up on that cliff was a series of a few tracks they were enormous as they went around some brush then vanished without a trace some toes were visible. Their was only a few tracks as if something just was trudging through the snow on the side of the mountain. This is not the first time I have found massive tracks in this range at one time I was hiking around the Union Mill and mining sites when I found a series of strange tracks. Strangely those tracks went for about 30' and also vanished as well. Only these looked like massive size 18 miner boot prints which were not there an hour earlier when we had been hiking around in the dark.  Something big lurks up in these hills whether that is bigfoot or some giant or ghostly miner my research has shown us this therefore you cant help but be even slightly curious while exploring the peaks that overshadow the small towns below.

Regardless of what you believe this is one of Nevada's finest mountain ranges. When I off road in it I try to imagine what life was like in the 1800's when settlers had to cross it to get from Reno to Virginia City or the trek they had to make across it to other nearby towns. Their really is no way you can avoid the Virginia Range due to its massive shear size alone. So over the years some people roughed it and some nearly did not make it. Their is allot of old wagon roads that one can find just roaming the top of the range and not much has changed the views have always been the same. Most folks feel that the range was named after James Finney AKA "Old Virginny" an early discoverer of the gold and silver found within the Comstock Lode. Therefore some feel that Virginia City and its Range were named after this historical figure.

While the Virginia Range is very vast the additions to you will sift through on this project really focus on the peaks which overshadow Virginia City. Honestly, when you think about it Virginia City was truly the first industrial city of the West which boomed by the late 1850's. James Finney also nicknamed Old Virginny from his birthplace was reported to have named the town during a drunken celebration when he dropped a bottle of whiskey on the ground and christened the newly founded tent town on the slopes of Mt. Davidson. It would appear that Mount Davidson gave birth to this boom town which today is one of the largest national historic landmarks in the country and can be seen entirely from the peak of Mount Davidson.

Credit for the discovery of the Comstock Lode till this day remains disputed as to who made the first gold and silver within the Virginia Range. Back in the 1840's the first white settlers to have set there eyes onto Mount Davidson were the Mormons who only passed through the area as they were being called back to Utah. Later on the Grosh Brothers had a cabin here before Virginia City was a town unfortunately one of the brothers died in 1857 from a foot injury which became infected. The other Grosh brother Allen set out to California with maps of his claims and samples. Unfortunately Allen had gotten lost up in Squaw Valley and died from severe frostbite after his legs had to be amputated. At the time Henry Comstock was left in the brothers stead to care for the cabin and a locked chest which contained gold and silver ore samples. Of course you can imagine that Henry T.P. Comstock learned the death of the last remaining Grosh brother then claimed the cabin and the land with the rich ore as his own. He was not a very educated man so when he examined the trunk of ore he did not know the gold and silver both came from the same vein.

It would not be the first time Comstock decided to be devious as when gold was found at the head of Six - Mile Canyon in 1859 by Pat McLauglin and Peter O'Reilly just below Sugarloaf Mountain in the Flowery Range he would claim this discovery as his own. The gullible Irish gentlemen believed that this was Comstock's land therefore they included him a place in history thus naming the lode after him. Pretty soon Virginny Town was named Virginia City one of the most important settlements between San Francisco and Denver. Soon wealthy miners, politicians, lawyers, bankers, doctors, emigrants and all walks of life flooded the streets of this boom town below Mount Davidson to make lives for themselves.

Allot of the gold and silver was shipped to the Union during the Civil War which in turn Abe Lincoln made Nevada a state in 1864.  Elaborate mansions like the Mackay Mansion, hotels, Virginia Truckee Railroad, massive mills like American Flats and nearly 30,000 residents flooded the streets. Just in a short time newspapers, opium dens, competing fire companies, fraternal organizations, five police precincts, Catholic churches being built such as St. Marys In The Mountains, thriving red light direct, first Miner's Union in the US, Storey County Jail, China Town, hospitals like St. Mary's Louise and Silver Terrace Cemeteries all came to be. Lets not forget all the historical figures who laid eyes on this town and Mount Davidson such as Ulysses Grant, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison and Mark Twain just to name a few. Back then many prominent figures summated Mount Davidson, Ophir Hill and Mount Bullion all which were part of the lode. As a matter in fact many shafts ran from near the peaks to Virgnia City.

Today life has slowed down in Virgnia City the one thing that remains consistent is the views of the range which surround this historic town. Back in the 1960's and 70's people would drive to the top of Mount Davidson to make out. It kind of for awhile was a lovers lane more or less. Today though these back country roads found at the top of the Virginia Range serve as a Mecca for outdoor enthusiast who enjoy to offroad, hike, explore and take in the 200 mile views. While Mount Davidson has the best stellar views the second best is Ophir Hill which really is a short hike or journey nearby.

I highly recommend though visiting Mount Bullion, Ophir Hill and Mount Davidson if you really want to grasp the beauty that the Virginia Range possesses. Being a paranormal investigator when I stood on these peaks I was able to nearly see about 40 places that our group did explorations and investigations at. Also the flag pole that Mark Twain use to look up at it even today still stands proud at the top of Mount Davidson. People find Mount Davidson slightly more appealing only because Ophir Hill nearby is littered with antennas which kind of obstruct some of the great views but no less the Virginia Range is full of unforeseen beauty which we worked hard to bring to all of you. From the top of Mount Davidson and peaks that surround it one can see the Territorial Enterprise, Chollar Mine & Mansion,
Comstock Gold Mill & Savage Mansion, Old Storey County Courthouse & JailPonderosa Saloon & Belcher Mine, Comstock Lode, American Flats, VC Hebrew Cemetery, Fourth Ward Historic School, Virginia Cities China Town, John Mackay Mansion, Silver Terrace Cemeteries,  Julia Bulette Red Light Museum,  Tunnel #4 & The Virginia Truckee Railyard,  Saint Mary's Louise Hospital & Art Center, St. Mary's Church, Sugarloaf Mountain and Mill, Flowery Mountains Mining District, Washoe Club and The Union Mill & Mining Company.
