Virginia City Nevada is a very dear place for me in actuality it is my stomping grounds and a home away from home as it was for many prominent men who came here seeking wealth and power. Its easy to understand why previous presidents including Mark Twain and many other big wigs fell in love with this town. Although much has changed in the past 165 years its still easy to feel as if you stepped back into a time machine once your feet hit the boardwalk and you end up absorbing all the history a location like the Ponderosa Saloon & Mine offers.

Every year for our viewers I try to put together a few really good cases of this once rich boom town which may have boasted 25 thousand residents at its peak. Gold and Silver was the cream of the crop mines ran underneath the entire town including The Ponderosa Saloon today. As some of you are aware prior to it being named the Ponderosa it was the Sharon House and The Old Bank Of California in 1864. The bank did close in the 1930's and from our research it appears the saloon opened in the 1970's after it was abandoned for awhile.

When William Sharon used this as a home with a vault to store profits his partner William Ralston used the bank to monopolize the mines. While John Mackay and James ore brought up claims quietly surrounding The Belcher. John did not have any need to store his coin and ingots at the bank since he had owned his own vault. In 1859 Mackay, Fair, William O' Brien and James Flood took control of the Hale and Norcross Mine. John P. Jones and Alvinza Hayward around the same time took control of the Crown Point Mine/Mill which were setbacks for the bank. Mackay and Fair's wealth and discovery of the Big Bonanza made his district in the Comstock Lode one of the richest in the world would go on to affect the gold and silver markets in Europe.

After 1864, William Sharon, William Ralston, and their Bank of California monopolized the Comstock, controlling mines, mills, and the railroad. Irish immigrants John Mackay and James Fair, two common miners with a sense for ore, quietly obtained neglected claims and eventually challenged the Bank's stranglehold. In 1869, Mackay, Fair, and their partners James Flood and William O'Brien seized control of the Hale and Norcross Mine. John P. Jones and Alvinza Hayward soon took command of the Crown Point Mine. The setbacks shook the Bank, which collapsed within a few years.

In 1873, Mackay and Fair's hard work and ingenuity paid off with a phenomenal discovery known as the Big Bonanza, winning the district even greater recognition. Tons of gold and silver flowed into the market, affecting monetary policy as far away as Germany. Mackay and Fair became Comstock sovereigns.

Unfortunately, more bonanzas were not forthcoming. By the 1880s, the district slumped again, and only optimists lingered. Minor discoveries in 1903 helped, but soon the Comstock resumed its decline. In the 1940s, Virginia City attracted artists and bohemians including writer Lucius Beebe who resuscitated the Territorial Enterprise. From 1959 to 1974, the Comstock acquired notoriety as the focus of the television hit Bonanza.

The Best & Belcher Mine sprung up around the 1850s although it was not the most profitable its very existence alone added to Virginia Cities growth. Gold and Silver ore was very rich especially with bigger mining operations such as the Yellow Jacket Mill & Mine in Gold Hill or how about the Combination Shaft, Union Mill & Mines, Gould and Curry or Savage Mine just to name a few! As a matter in fact this mine became known as part of the Big Bonanza which produced over 180 million dollars in gold thus where most miners made 25 cents per day mining the average worker here grossed 4 dollars a day which boasted some of the highest pay for any miner in the world. Another quick fast fact is that the show Bonanza was named off this mining operation. Sadly the Best and Belcher Mine proved not to be as profitable as the nearby Gould & Curry/Consolodated Mines and in the end the owners were lucky if they seen 438 dollars a piece. When the mine finally closed in 1917 it would be nearly a century till a new boom would occur. Do you know what that was? Simple Tourism! It appears that mine tours are more profitable and successful then the mining operations that once took place here quite ironic eh?

The Best & Belcher Mines owners did make some profit but they also lost a million dollar a piece so eventually it would go bust besides the fact construction efforts took nearly 1.6 million dollars. In today's times that would costs worth three to four times as much just as if that were profit for a miner. So you can understand how mining helped shaped this region and although today the boom has long since been over some tycoons today are still striking it rich revitalizing a new gold rush in the region. While some of the cities oldest structures today that once may have served a purpose have been repurposed much like the Ponderosa Saloon you see today it is no longer Bank Of California nor the focal point for this once bustling mining operation.

One of the horizontal shafts bores right underneath the saloon and traverses 300' into the mountain that resides behind it. So when you traverse the inside of The Belcher Mine you will reach a depth of 52' underground. While the mine was once much larger with vertical shafts as well as tunnel systems today only a small portion of it is accessible inside The Ponderosa Saloon.
I like the idea of being able to have a cold beer while chasing some ghosts, forgotten history and even tales about lost treasure. Allot of the research we do here is directed at history, culture and preservation. Miners would work in pairs while one would go to the lower depths load the ore buckets while the other hoisted it up to be loaded on an ore cart.

Many of the more well known mines in the Comstock Lode had their own vaults to secure the gold and silver bars. In this case The Bank Of California who opened up its doors here in 1864 used this as a means to secure everyone's valuables in its vault. I believe John Mackay of the very haunted Mackay Mansion also had some investments with the bank and may have also stored some of his profits here since his vault was limited in size. The vault which can still be visited today has 1042 cubic feet of space, half inch of steel plating throughout and outer walls that were two feet thick. This bank help finance the growth of the
Comstock Lode therefore it played a major role in the local economy here which also attributed to the cities growth. The door is two inches thick made of pure steel nearly making it dynamite proof!

Meanwhile the bank would be in operation as below it mules were pulling ore carts and ponderosa pines were being set into place to secure the vertical shafts. Most of the support beams you see in the mine today are original at least 150 of the beams along the long corridor leading to the end of the tunnel. The mine was cramped but also very dark and dingy. The air quality was sometimes very poor so the miners would often bring down a canary in a cage to serve as a warning system in case methane gases ever became released as if the bird passed out it probably meant it was time to book it really fast. Then you had the threat of hitting a hot steam pocket and getting burnt by scalding water.

Some of the miners used drills at times they would explode which brings me to an incident where two miners died in an accident after that other prospectors who worked these tunnels called that drill The Widow Maker. Do not get this confused with
Delamar Nevada who was also called The Widow Maker due to silicosis that killed most of its miners leaving behind their wives. Mining was hazardous but it was a way of life and many emigrants came overseas hoping to strike it rich no matter what the cost were even if they paid with their life. Which is in theory a really good speculation to connect the haunting's that may take place at the Ponderosa Saloon with those that lost their lives just below it.

When The Ponderosa Saloon opened for business a few decades ago in the 1970's they came to realize that the main shaft leading into the mine was behind it. So what they did is dug a horizontal shaft connecting it into the original old shaft. Then the saloon owners opened it for tours which I think is a fantastic learning experience for those who may want something very simple and accessible. As an explorer I can tell you that I have been in quite a few mines some very dangerous with shafts, cave ins, poor air quality and weakened timber. However this mine is truly a sturdy piece of American West history so you should take a tour as the money goes towards the preservation of this fine establishment. The Ponderosa Pines being used were brought it via flume from Marlette Lake and Hobart Reservoir.

When the bank financed a number of mining operations in the Comstock Lode they also had to repossess some of them when the owners defaulted. This made the bank a very profitable business. It was an extremely prominent bank and very lucrative for many years. Although many of the locals associate this bank with tales of lost treasure.  In 1927 a group of armed bank robbers looted the bank then fled with the money to Six Mile Canyon near Sugar Loaf Mountain & Mill. They made off with 32 thousand dollars most of the money was never recovered and still till this day remains buried underground. Their were three vaults in total at the bank which stored paper money, jewelry, gold bars, silver bars, valuables and coins. In total the bank probably had millions of dollars in its vaults at one given time. One of the vaults was integrated underground this was to help prevent it from ever being robbed of course nothing was ever full proof as outlaws always tried to find a way to get a hold of such riches even by force.

If you even delve just a little more deeper that same canyon is also haunted by the ghost of an outlaw named Jack Davis. I cannot say I ran into his ghost up in Six Mile Canyon where he built his mill below
Sugar Loaf Mountain. But what I can tell you is I been offroading and hiking in the Flowery Mountains lets leave it that the fact that they are very strange more so eerie. When you are hiking on the side of a mountain in the winter and you find a giant miners boot that vanishes into thin air you must question if old Jack still guards his loot to this day. Oh yeah the loot! You see Jack Davis lived a double life as in Gold Hill he ran a livery stable while in his spare time he would rob trains, bullion wagons and stage coaches on the Geiger Grade. Whenever he stole the loot he would melt it down then sell the bars other times he would bury them so others would not become suspicious of his riches. He was killed while robbing a stagecoach south of Eureka leaving behind his buried loot rumor has it that his ghost still guards the treasure.  Its also possible that ole Jack may have tried to rob the Virginia & Truckee Railroad as well.

I am sure some of the miners who were hurt in various accidents also spent time at the
Saint Mary's Louise Hospital & Art Center. While some of them may have prayed at St. Mary's Church in hopes of striking it rich. By touring this addition to our site one can help get a better understanding the systematic's of mining, banking and transition. As at one time this once was a bustling bank and home to the Belcher Mine only now to be a place where old timers like myself can enjoy a cold beer and share a few tales. Today the mines although no longer active are a place for others to learn the inner workings of the Comstock mines, encounter many early wild western relics of the past and see one of the oldest remaining structures downtown that was not effected by the great fire of 1875 unlike China Town which lost 95 percent of its structures and homes.  We all must do our part to keep these places alive so that others can enjoy them for generations to come all the way down to the old mining artifacts to the longstanding history this building represents. Today the Ponderosa Saloon is a reminder of its former glory where a banking empire overshadowed one of the wealthiest mining cities in the world. Now today it is a location where others can learn about how mines such as The Belcher contributed to the cities growth and ideally what it would be like to be a miner of the Comstock. If your looking for something a little less bustling then the Washoe Club this place is truly a gem with walls full of trophies, historical relics and a brief moment where you can actually step back into time.
