You may have heard of Julia Bulette's name mentioned on the TV show Bonanza. She was indeed a real prostitute who gained notoriety when she came to Virginia City in the year of 1863. She lived on D street working solo from her home in the Red Light District where back in those days prostitution was legal just like many of the ghost towns I have toured and explored in the wild west.

She was very well known amongst men in the town a fairly respected lady which was not so typical as prostitutes were treated poorly back in the day. Although some worked in whore houses the ones that did not did not always get paid and sometimes they were found murdered. This was the case as on January 20th of 1967 she was killed in the early morning found strangled and beaten to death.

Its a very sad situation considering Julia was very ill and in debt at the time of her death. She had to compete with many other prostitutes and local brothers just to earn a living. She was very well known perhaps a favorite of many firemen and miners locally. This is why her murder came as a shock to the growing town of nearly 10,0000 people of
Virginia City Nevada.

Time would pass by as the crime would go unsolved until man by the name of John Milleain was caught selling one of her dresses and other possessions. He was an immigrant who spoke very little English from France. Strangely when her murder was investigated they found that Julia Bulette was also robbed of her most prized possessions. Thus it was more then likely that at the time it was John who committed this crime although even prior to being hanged he continued to state he was innocent. John Millian was hung the first public execution in Virginia City where
Mark Twain also bared witness to the event on April 24th 1868. Nobody knows for sure if this was the man who killed Julia as the trial was brief and allot of the evidence was very circumstantial. As he may have gotten her items off another man in town as back in those days trade was quite common particularly in Virginia City. Perhaps we may never know but nonetheless this man was hung and he had an accomplice he claimed which means that the real murderer have walked. John Milleain was said to have been hung on boot hill in Silver Terrace Cemeteries as the folks who came to love Julia also had gotten to see justice for her served.

The death of Julia Bulette made her a martyr within the town as many men including firefighters marched holding up her coffin. I heard when her death occurred it was more like a parade as all sorts of men and their wives came out to honor her. She may just be the most well known prostitute associated with Virginia City even today. Sure their were others who were murdered and many of those were unsolved but Julia Bulette set the tone as she would be the first of many. Virginia City was a place of great sin and greed. Men gambled, drank and sometimes the most well known politicians came here to enjoy the brothels such as the private
Washoe Club. Her death was honored with all mills, mines and business shutting down for the day. You can more then often see a photo of her up in some of the saloons just as her legacy carries on through this museum.

She would be honored for many years to come as her legacy would reside in a small basement of a building on C Street. The cellar displays these items underneath an old saloon which today is the Mandarin Garden Chinese Restaurant. The collection was assembled by a Gordon Churchward which has a sign stating that he spent about 10 years to piece the collection together and over $35,000 on it. Their is no curator everything is left as is even if its collecting dust left alone in a dingy dark cellar for others to bare witness to.

Within the collection are vibrators, cracked human skull, naughty decanters and shot glasses. Their are also displays of a murdered prostitute meant to reenact Julia's death and backroom abortion taking place. I also seen old vibrators, lubricants, condoms and photos of various prostitutes. Their are other finds such as old opium pipes, medical instruments, artifacts, contraceptives, cure-alls, dice, cards and other oddities. Allot of what has been collected came from the Red Light District and some items belonging to Julia Bulette. Her legacy continues to live on and she is buried in Flower Hill Cemetery.

Today a sign states"
Julia is remembered for her golden heart and remains Nevada's most celebrated courtesan as people remember the request that 'her faults be buried with her and her virtues live.'" There is more information on Julia further below on this page which talks more into detail about her death, murder and life its very interesting nonetheless.

Being a prostitute back in the day was no easy task but this is how most women earned their living. No matter what it didn't make it right that Julia was robbed and murdered. My believe is prostitution should be legal across the world as it allows men to get what they need or want as long as its done safely. Allot of times operating a solo business in the Red Light district meant a string of bad luck for the prostitutes but at the same time it was a business. A business where the men could be entertained working hard during the day and having the opportunity to expend their money on the women that left their red light on!

Julia Bulette (1832 – January 19/20, 1867), was an English-born American prostitute and madam in Virginia City, Nevada. After her violent death, she has been described as proprietor of the most elegant and prosperous brothel in the City and various films and books took inspiration of her real or purported biography. [1] She was said to be the first unmarried white woman to arrive in the miningboomtown following the Comstock Lode silver strike in 1859. Bulette was a popular figure with the miners, and the local firefighters made her an honorary member of Virginia Engine Company Number 1. She was murdered by John Millain, a French drifter and jewel thief in 1867.

Origins

Julia, whose real name was Jule, was born in 1832 in London, England of French ancestry, although some historians give her birthplace as Liverpool[2] or Mississippi.[3] At an early age she emigrated with her family to New Orleans, where she later married a man named Smith, from whom she separated. In about 1852 or 1853, she moved to California where she lived in various cities and towns until her arrival in 1859 in Virginia City, Nevada, a mining boomtown since the Comstock Lode silver strike that same year. As she was the only white woman in the area, she became greatly sought after by the miners. She quickly took up prostitution, charging $1000 a night for her services.[4] Jule or Julia as she became known, was described as having been a beautiful, tall, and slim brunette with dark eyes.[5][6][6] She was refined in manner with a humorous, witty personality.

Julia's Palace

With her earnings, Julia was able to build a magnificent brothel in the rococo design. She named it Julia's Palace, and it was the largest, and most prosperous brothel in Virginia City. She had staffed the brothel with beautiful girls imported from San Francisco, served French cuisine and wines, dressed herself and her girls in the latest Parisian fashions. She was also a good friend to the miners, who adored her.[7] One described her as having "caressed Sun Mountain with a gentle touch of splendor".[7] Julia stood by her miners in times of trouble and misfortune, once turning her Palace into a hospital after several hundred men became ill from drinking contaminated water. She nursed the men herself.[8] Once when an attack by Indians appeared imminent, Julia chose to remain behind with the miners instead of seeking shelter in Carson City. Julia also raised funds for the Union cause during the American Civil War.

Julia appeared regularly in the streets of Virginia City, clad in costly sables and jewels, driving a lacquered brougham which bore a painted Escutcheon on the panel which was four aces crowned by a lion couchant.[7]

Julia's greatest triumph occurred when the firefighters made her an honorary member of Virginia Engine Number 1. On 4 July 1861, the firemen elected her the Queen of the Independence Day Parade, and she rode Engine Company Number One's fire truck through the town wearing a fireman's hat and carrying a brass fire trumpet filled with fresh roses, the firemen marching behind.[9]

She donated large sums for new equipment and often personally lent a hand at working the water pump.[9]

Murder

On the morning of January 20, 1867, Julia's partially nude body was found by her maid in her bedroom. She had been strangled and bludgeoned to death, and robbed of her valuable jewel collection, clothing and furs.[10]

Virginia City went into mourning for her, with the mines, mills and saloons being closed down as a mark of respect. On the day of her funeral, January 21, thousands formed a procession of honor behind her black-plumed, glass-walled hearse; first the firemen, who were followed by the Nevada militia who played funeral dirges.[11] Julia was buried in the Flower Hill Cemetery. [12]

A little over a year later, Julia's murderer was caught and hanged for the crime. He was a French drifter whose name was John Millain; and on April 24, 1868 he went to the gallows, swearing he was not guilty of having killed Julia, but had been only an accomplice in the theft of her jewels.[11] Millain's hanging was witnessed by author Mark Twain.[13]

Legacy

Julia's legend continued after her death. The Virginia and Truckee Railroad honored her memory by naming one of its richly furnished club coaches after her. Her portrait hung in many Virginia City saloons, and author Rex Beach immortalized her as Cherry Malotte in his novel, The Spoilers. Oscar Lewis in his book Silver Kings reported that Julia Bulette was written about more than any other woman of the Comstock Lode.[14]

Only about two authentic portraits exist of Julia; one is a photograph which shows her standing beside an Engine Number 1 fireman's hat. A third photograph, previously identified as Julia Bulette, was most likely that of her maid, who was also named Julia.[15]

In October 1959, an episode of the television series Bonanza titled "The Julia Bulette Story", featured the character of Julia, and showed Little Joe falling in love with her to the chagrin of his father. She was played by actress Jane Greer.
