We had left New Chicago to head on out to Drytown and I had passed this little cemetery. I knew this was one of the two cemeteries in this boomtown. Was not sure id even be able to access this location as quite a few cemeteries end up being on ranch land with no public access unfortunately.
 
But see when I went out to New Chicago I had driven past this place and was quite curious as to what history could be found up on this hill. So when I came back into town I stopped at the Drytown Historic Plaque which was in fairly bad shape could read it but was hard to read. I figured that would be a good starting point before we moved onto St. Stephens Historic Cemetery.
 
I drove around for a bit because I wanted to find a place we could grille and eat dinner at. I sometimes like busting out my grill and the cooler. Its funner to bring some good eats when your on the road because where we go we do not always have access to restaurants or fast food even.
 
The cemetery is surrounded on one side by a pasture and farm. The other side has a few homes where residents of Drytown still live today. I drove past the old fire department their was a plaque figured id come back here after I had checked out the cemetery so we drove up the hill where my son opened the gates then we parked up near a couple benches near a crypt.
 
The crypt is from the 1990's its much newer and seems to be off by itself. We took out a nice picnic blanket sat it under a shady tree and I begin to make spicy bratwurst with a side of potato salad plus fruit snacks and other goodies. It was a nice picnic in between cooking did some mild filming, EVP's recording readings and taking photos nothing major.
 
You have a series of walls to the left with concrete platforms where most of the graves can be found. Their is also two to three wrought iron enclosures one has the gravestone of a child which is beautifully engraved while another one is a wooden weathered gravemarker. There is another with a couple broken stones and another that is empty.
 
The cemetery is heavily shaded lots of trees and also lots of magpies up in those trees. We seen some turkey running into the brush and my son also seen a deer but he was quick could not get its photo. It is Spring so nature thrives here birds, flowers, turkeys, deer etc. The cemetery is kind of a park like setting and it sits up on the hill kind of overlooking town you could say.
 
Towards the front of the cemetery their are no graves but rather this stone foundation coated with concrete with a set of steps and a bell on top of it. I thought when I got here this was the fire bell since Drytown had fire departments because the place was always burning down. Its not uncommon to see in semi ghost towns fire bells in cemeteries or in other locations. I figured since the church burned down they put the fire bell here but the more I study the video and photos I believe this was the steeple bell.
 
You see the foundation or front steps leading into the Catholic Church is all that remains of what once was the parish which at the time resided in front of the cemetery. The church burned down so the foundation and this bell are what is left of it. But it took me a bit to figure it out and do the research. So in a sense the church ruins were a bonus to this exploration because not only did I get to explore old pioneer graves but to see the bell was something I had no idea was located here.
 
Afar I could see cattle grazing while I was exploring old grave sites. I have not seen to many brick plots or enclosures but their are a few they are in ruins or in piles. Their are many stones that were broken also here not as many as some places but at least six or seven grave sites suffered from vandalism. Most of the graves to the right side of the cemetery are spread out while to the left they are very close together. In once instance a wall was about to break loose probably caused by local earthquake activity.
 
I did take a time out to play with my son he jumped around a little and I ran around some too. This is a nice place but you can tell nobody comes up here. I mean their are a few newer stones to so it may still be in use that is of course if they can avoid unmarked burials because records kept of this place were a bit poor.
 
You wont see statues here like most Catholic Cemeteries but their are a few nice monuments and pioneer stones worth reading or checking out. Their is a couple old gravestones laying on their backs consumed by grass and earth. One of them is from 1863 of a man who died in a wagon tragedy which is the first interment here another I believe was a man who died in a steamboat accident. Life in the west was not easy for no man death lurked around every corner.
 
The hill the cemetery sits on does continue to climb but it ends up near some forest its just a nice place. I never feel more relaxed then when I can spend time in a cemetery doing solid research while enjoying myself. This place is like a park in the middle of this semi ghost town and while downtown Drytown gets plenty of attention very few know about St. Stephens just because its a bit forgotten.
 
You will see some crosses and pretty much my Fathers Day bbq and I was happy because I had finally gotten to try out my new propane grill I had gotten for my birthday. I had a nice time with my family and I was able to relax for a bit from exploring all day. But I could only stay for awhile because we still had to explore Drytown before dark so we would pack up the picnic and move out where we would start the Drytown exploration at the old restored fire station which is just a few hundred feet from this cemetery.

This is all that remains of the old Catholic Church which burned down. The foundation appears to be made of stone perhaps reinforced with concrete. On top of it could possibly be the old Dry Town fire bell which would have rang out whenever fires did occur so that the firemen could suit up and put water on the fire before it has grown out of control. In this case the entire church burned down leaving behind only the cemetery which resides behind the bell in the first photo to the upper left. It was not a very large parish from what I read but it did serve the Catholics of Drytown. Both the bell and this foundation remind us of how tumultuous times were in Drytown. I read somewhere the bell use to be the towns fire bell which rang when fires broke out but I do think its quite possible that instead it belonged to the parish and rang during Sunday service then again maybe it was used for both what do our viewers think? Its possible that this large bell sat up in the steeple of the parish then again maybe it also served as a fire bell too! I love history and its everywhere in Drytown.
