 St. Stephens Historic Catholic Cemetery resides on a grass knoll just above the old semi-ghost town known as Drytown California. It is surrounded by ranches, ponds and the rolling sierra foothills. The earliest gravestone dates back to 1863 of a Peter McCabe who was from Ireland. Many of the graves are in peril as some are broken in half, brick walls collapsing, missing stones and quite a few graves are simply unmarked on this grassy knoll. Its a place of beauty, nature, bird life, Catholic history and of course surrounded by some of Amador Counties oldest structures.

The cemetery is owned by the St. Katharine Drexel Parish and maintained by the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church located up in Sutter Creek because the Drytown Catholic Church had burned down. I read that the foundation where the church once stood can be seen at the edge of the cemetery which appears to be where the fire bell today is located at serving as a memorial.  At the time we visited here we did not realize it though but wondered why a foundation would be in such a cemetery. Back in the boom town years for many of these mining towns often had a city cemetery with a church residing out in front of it or nearby. More then often churches sat near the cemetery they tended to and had service at.

I kind of found this cemetery by accident this is because the Drytown Cemetery to the south was inaccessible and is private property. Reasoning being is that its landlocked by a working cattle ranch. Their was a civil proceeding between the owner and the county however the county had lost. Sad to say its one of the oldest cemeteries in Amador County and the only way you get to see it is to obtain permission through the head of the General Services Administration for Amador County. So we were left with exploring St. Stephens Cemetery instead which turned out to be a really serene historic place because it contained some of the first Catholic Parishioners who came to Drytown California making it a very significant site!

Peter MacCabe an Irishman was killed in a wagon accident on the road between Drytown and Ione. Given that he was the first interment here it would seem another name rang a bell here to which is the gravesite of Manuel King who was buried here in 1864. He was one out of 100 people who was killed or went missing in the explosion of the steamboat "Washoe" in Rio Vista. Only seventy had survived the tragedy others had either perished due to the flames or drowned in this tragedy. Its graves like these your going to find when you explore this cemetery on a hill surrounded by green pastures of grazing cattle and nature. As a matter in fact I loved this place so much my first time visiting that I had a picnic and tried out my new propane grill near some benches near the old church foundation. Maybe its not ideal to have a cookout in a cemetery but this graveyard is more like an intimate park like setting perfect for visiting in the Spring.

Drytown California today is a semi-ghost town and it sprang up about a year after the gold strike in Coloma. It was a difficult place to placer mine because of the lack of water which is how it had gotten its name. But its real downfall was the fact that fires had ravaged it so many times including burning down the church which stood near the edge of this cemetery. When the gold had ran out most of the people left which was around 1860 and they went to Jackson California to work the deeper mines. Despite so many fires Drytown has a few buildings which still date back from its boom era in the 1850's.  Supposedly not far from here is a plastered adobe structure on an old wagon road which is the oldest in Amador County which resides in a garden. Definitely plenty of gold rush history here including this Catholic Cemetery which is why it was so important for us to visit and do research at.

Dry Creek runs through town not to far from this cemetery early placer mining took place here in the spring of 1848 when Mexican, Indian and American Emigrants searched for gold in the gravel along the creek. Back then the creek probably flowed more often and plentiful in comparison to today's times. But its that early mining that led to the growth of this town which really never died and today is the oldest town in all of Amador County. As a matter in fact in the towns early days rumor has it that so did twenty-six saloons which also sprang up which often led to drunk brawls. Along with that about thirty cabins and tents which sat along the creek which are long gone today. Rumor has it you could cross this creek in the towns heyday by walking over a fallen tree then in the summer months when the creek dried up you could cross anywhere within town to get to where you had to go.

The town had it all though stores, butcher shops, hotels, taverns, homes, theater not far from this cemetery, four stamp mills, school, Catholic and Protestant Church, Monte tables and even a post office. Just like any town in the west the fires, epidemics and travesties did occur so death was common. It also had its fair share of lawlessness as in 1855 five men and one woman were slaughtered by a group of Mexican bandits who used an axe, guns and knives as an act of revenge for a fire that was intentionally set which burned down the Mexican part of town. More then likely the victims of the Rancheria Massacre of the 1850's are buried in the Drytown City Cemetery not St. Stephens since at the time this cemetery was not erected till the 1860's.

As being a veteran paranormal investigator I can tell you that this grassy knoll the cemetery resides on is haunted. But for me its more then just about the ghosts or a few thrills. I am a major history buff and I work hard to try to integrate the beauty found in these places blending the history. An example of this would be the nature element but also trying to show you other aspects of this location. Sometimes I visit ghost towns and very little remains but the cemetery while other times like with the case of Drytown so much still today remains. For example Drytown has two cemeteries and down on Main Street are quite a few beautiful wild western heritage sites so in a sense you feel as if your stepping back in time. I also feel that over the years adding sites like these to share with the rest of the world is a wonderful contribution to those who love these kind of locations!
