St. Canice Catholic Church Cemetery
 
St. Canice resides right next to the old pioneer cemetery although the burial ground is Methodist beside it this one is Catholic. The one thing I learned about Catholic Cemeteries in the wild west is that most of the families buried in such graveyards had power and wealth. This is where the masons, mine owners, businessmen etc are buried. It shows as many of the gravestones are very large and their are tall monuments everywhere. Also many elaborate wrought iron enclosures and its kept up more so then the graveyard next door.
 
In the center of the cemetery is a giant white cross while to the left are many large gravestones elaborately engraved by the masons. It was the Order Of Oddfellows and Masons or rather those of Italian descent who are mainly found buried here. To the left is more level ground while to the right within the burial ground is a hill which eventually climbs up into the pioneer cemetery.
 
If you take the path which takes you through the cemetery you can find much newer interments. But as it stands now there no longer is room for burial here its practically grave to grave unlike the huge open areas found within the pioneer cemetery. Its also not as in bad shape yeah there are at least nine or ten stones that were broken but none were stolen. They have these monuments with these little sculptures of praying children in them I thought that was pretty intriguing.
 
Their is also another grave site which looks like a star gate although its not it reminded me off that movie. I have to say that at night here is much more eerie then during the day. Their is a rosy marble monument which is really nice also worth seeing. Their are a few giant tombstones that have been pushed over or were broke in half while one of the wrought iron enclosures was missing some pieces of iron. Most of the damage done to the monuments is where the top piece is simply just missing or broke off. One of the wrought iron enclosures is completely painted silver it stands out no matter where your at here.
 
It appears that many of the graves have flowers on them its obvious this place gets more attention and nobody gives a care about the pioneer graveyard on the hill sad to say. There are allot of walls in St. Canice while some are completely filled in with concrete then a stone sitting on top.
 
Its not a huge cemetery but the people that are also buried here built the town such as the walls, mansions, tunnels under Nevada City, engraved the stones and probably had a hand in the constructing the majestic asylum just down the road that we investigated. It appears that in the front are the pioneer Catholics and the back are burials that are more modern. Its strange how one can go to a cemetery look at beautiful stones from the 1800's then as you get to the newer sections the stones get more simplified more then often just a small granite slab.
 
More or less this cemetery was an urban exploration sure I did some investigating I always do but it was just nice to sit on a wall dangle the feet and try to relax. There is allot of nature here flowers, butterflies, leaves changing colors and many graves which had poetic words. My son and I ran around in our Halloween mask trying to scare one another. That is probably the most fun even the ghosts here have had in awhile. There is this one area you can go down to here its a stairs that leads to an open area which I bet has gravesites that are not marked. Other then that though this is a very beautiful cemetery in comparison to how poorly treated the pioneer graveyard is in on the hill.
 
After our explorations of the cemetery we decided to get downtown Nevada City and get involved with the local culture.
