Subject: Our Halloween Spooky Travels In Illinois Date: 10/14/2016 From: LordOfThyNight@aol.com To: ParanormalBuffalo@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalGhostSociety@googlegroups.com, paranormalghostsociety@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalGhostSocietyConnections@yahoogroups.com, TheParanormalGhostSociety@yahoogroups.com, SupernaturalFlorida@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalCalifornia@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalNevada@yahoogroups.com,Paranormalflorida@yahoogroups.com, sierraparanormal@yahoogroups.com, PGSPhantoms@yahoogroups.com I had just left Springville's Oak Ridge Cemetery visiting the Lincoln Tomb and had a few hours drive ahead. I knew the drive would be worth visiting this asylum I mean the grounds are huge and the buildings are really amazing from the photos I had seen previously. Their is not much in between Bartonville and Springville honestly you see the Illinois Muddy River, open fields for miles and old farms but that is about all you see. Their is hardly anything for a few hours which made me think how eerie it must had been in the early 1900's if you were to be transferred to this state hospital. When I arrived in Bartonville you could see the massive water tower which they were doing some kind of work on then the Bowen building off in the distance which is where the nurses dorm was located and the administration for this state hospital. The building is made of limestone with two tower like structures on the ends of it. But their was no windows at all they were all smashed out and the lower floor had boards all the way around. I was hoping to go into the Bowen building but it was like fort Knox if a board was off id been able to go in walk around but the place was tight. All the other buildings around were owned and utilized by businesses. I think the only abandoned building from the hospital was the Bowen Building which by the way is supposedly haunted and someone captured a ghostly female standing in front of one of the windows years ago. It was getting late so I did not have plans to stay on site to long I just mainly stated on the main road through the complex which boast the Pollak Hospital, Dorms and the Bowen Building. Today only 12 buildings remain because the Bowen was marked down to be demolished so it was one of those things I visit it or risk never seeing it so my main focus of the exploration was the Bowen although now I realize I should have visited other sites a little more too. Most of the dorms are made of brick including the old hospital and their supposedly is the old Tuberculous Wing that still stands I did not see that. Their also is four cemeteries I did not get to visit because I could not find them. At the time I was not sure I was going to visit this site but it was in the back of my mind so I figured id spend time wandering the Bowen building once that was a bust we did not stay to long and I did not realize the asylum had cemeteries. Honestly, I wish I went to the one cemetery Old Book haunts it even till this day. Their also was this bar that was boarded up its made to look old but its from the 1990s. Some of the buildings here are not part of the complex and anything that is today is owned by private parties including businesses. So I did not want to overstep my boundaries because over the years many of them have been vandalized and this place is patrolled regularly because of it. There are groves of woods all over the area so the place sits in nature really although all its little ponds are long gone. At one time this place had ponds with bird life and fish since long gone. So much has changed here since 1902 its just not the same place. People generally come from all over just to see the Bowen Building and I guess I was one of them. Not many people know this but mine tunnels run all over the area deep underground because Bartonville was kind of a rowdy little mining town at one time in the middle of Illinois. The mines are long since gone but so is this state hospital. I heard their was a museum but I believe when I went it was closed but would have loved to see the memorials for this place. Honestly, the winds were whipping which made it hard to do my EVP that part sucked maybe if I got inside some of the buildings I could have gotten some but not when its windy like it was. You have to keep in mind this place is not that far from Chicago really the windy city so its a breezy little town even if I went to the cemeteries per say it would have been similar results. But I still tried and I ran my EMF Detector to time to time to at least do some sort of investigation. The Bowen building had a little porch light on so the electrical still works on this building amazingly despite it being vacated for decades. I always miss the good stuff if this was years prior to 2016 I probably would have gotten to check out some of the buildings although I hear they still do ghost tours at the Pollak Hospital which matches the nearby dorms on that same street. I was on the back side to that hospital did not even realize it. Not until I studied Ariel maps to see where I walked around at and realized that other streets led to the front of some of these buildings. I think its a pretty awesome place with tons of rich history I mean hundreds of patients died on these grounds so the possibility of them being haunted is pretty likely. What saddens me is 63 buildings are now reduced to 12 that is allot of buildings that been lost here. I could not stay long I had such a long drive back and I wanted to get back to my room soak in the hot tub honestly. I had bought extra flashlights to roam the Bowen and did not even need them and that was the main purpose of the trip was to check it out. The drive back was long its over two hours back through empty fields of farmland nothing in between but when we stopped we stopped at a nice restaurant and I had a nice turkey dinner with mashed potatoes. Visiting places like these always leaves a long lasting impact on me being a historian but also empathetic. I can only imagine what life was like back in the day if you were a patient here. Literally you were in no mans land in an area full of castle like buildings. Patients here were treated better then most they were out and about roaming freely so it was not prison like as with some of the asylum grounds I been to but it still was a secluded places and more then often most patients did not even hardly have any visitors or to take their body home when they passed away. I did notice a few airplanes flew past me really low past the Bowen building so I guess nearby their is an airport. But on my exploration I never seen a single human here and I wandered around for about an hour taking photos and exploring the open grounds. I did not even really see any vehicles because even though this is a part of Bartonville its only a part of town which most have forgotten because most buildings really serve no use except for small business and private owners probably using them for storage. But I had to go given the fact that asylums like these no longer exist and if your going to go to Illinois its probably one of the best places you can go if your into urban exploration like me so just to lay eyes on it in my opinion was an honor and a nice trip out of town during my visit in October 2016 in Illinois. Lord Rick PGS Founder ![]() I do not know what this object is a UAV? UFO? Helicopter? I noticed it was in my picture and when I enlarged it this is what the object was. Their is an airport not far away so it could just be a plane or something but its odd looking almost spherical with an extension of some kind so who knows. Our best guess is that its a manmade object but just in case its not I am posting it here. It was taken beyond the Cottage/Dorms when I was photographing it and setting up my tripod. It is very strange nonetheless you can see the black sphere in the top picture! ![]() |

Not
much exist out by Bartonville its actually quite remote with the
exception of Peoria nearby the area is full of farmland, overgrown
river banks, old farms and woods. One had to wonder how scary it was
for some of the patients to be transferred here back in 1902 given the
fact that it was so secluded and away from everything. This is why I
took these photos just to show you what you see while traveling up to
Bartonville not much in between but windfarms, open fields and groves
of woods. After my two hour drive back to Southern Illinois we stopped
for a hearty meal it was quite the day visiting Lincolns Home, Oakridge
Cemetery and walking the grounds of the Bartonville Asylum. My only
regret is I did not get to visit the cemeteries I did not have allot of
maps or research on the complex but I still was happy I had gotten to
see the Bowen Building before the tore it down! Also below is the asylums wood groves the surround the asylum grounds. |
