Nevada City Pioneer Graveyard
 
Their is a plaque right before you climb the hill embedded in a pile of stones. This really was the original cemetery erected on a hill above downtown. The graves here are very scattered which tells me many of the stones are probably missing. I make it a goal that whenever I visit any of these old boom towns whether they are bustling or abandoned we always try to do a paranormal investigation into the town cemetery which I believe is mainly Methodist as the first church in Nevada City was.
 
That is because many of these towns historic figures are buried in these locations people who were prominent miners, business owners and even politicians. On the top of the hill is one said interment of a man who was a senator just as other burials are significant to the town. When you stand at the top of the cemetery you can see downtown. While most folks do there shopping or drink coffee at cafes here I am roaming the hillside of this historic burial ground.
 
I did run into a couple while in the cemetery of course they kept giving me dirty looks. It seems to be common in Nevada City where all folks do is stare at you like they never see a human before. I realize that I am a little punk gothic sort of but to get dirty looks in a cemetery is beyond idiocy.
 
Behind the cemetery is an old barn you tend to see allot of the older original structures from the towns hey day in peoples backyards or behind some of the businesses. Many of the stones here were broke at least half of them I came across. While other gravesites only have an iron cross and some stones are simply not legible.
 
Their are allot of walls some of them though have no gravestones within them as if they were stolen. Their is at least three to four wrought iron enclosures one is for a family. One of those enclosures had a couple children buried side by side who died at a very young age. Towards the back of the cemetery another one has this tall monument. While this family plot the stones are barely peering out of the ground because they had fallen and years of earth have totally covered them up.
 
I found a bra strapped to a tree not sure what that is about and a condom. So we know what the youngin's are doing up here then again if I lived in this town I might being having fun in the cemetery too since life here seems to be quite free. As some of you know Nevada City is a Hippie town allot of tokers, drinkers, musicians, ghost hunters, spiritualist, psychics etc.
 
We found quite a few wooden grave markers however they were oddly shaped. The bottom was very narrow while the top branched out perhaps so they could stake them into the ground. But none of the wood markers are legible the giant one on the top of the hill is but its very split and weathered.
 
If you look opposite of downtown St. Canice Cemetery resides next to the pioneer one only difference is that its separated by a chain link fence. One of the strangest things I found here is this giant tombstone was laying on the ground where it broke off the base or was pushed. However, the stone laid in the opposite direction of how it should have fallen and was face up but turned around. So that made me go hmmm a little wondering if someone went in turned it around and over. The stone had to way over 1200lbs not an easy task!
 
Many of the bases that once held a tombstone are just that bases without a stone. People have come here and robbed the place blind its sad real sad. Its a pleasant place do not get me wrong allot of trees, pretty leaves changing colors, downtown in historic NV City and full of historic figures. But the graves are very spread out and most are broken into pieces. My favorite stone is of a little girl grave whom has a beautifully carved sculpture of a child laying on her side.
 
The view here is not bad either you can see beyond Nevada City the foothills or lower sierras all covered in national forest. There was a fog we seen above the trees it may have been a controlled fire but still it just added to the investigation. I had a little of relevant burials here sadly I could only find three of the twelve prominent individuals. Some of them were early pioneers who came to the town owning business, mines and were involved with local politics. I believe a few of the more simple burials here like the hill of crosses probably were interments that came from the local asylum that I just had gotten done investigating.
 
If your looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of downtown this place is definitely worth stopping at. I cant say I caught the paranormal or not here. But I did do EVP sessions, take photos and nearly visited every single gravesite before I moved onto St. Canice Cemetery.
I know its not paranormal but it definitely is a little hilarious and odd when you think about it. I mean you have to wonder who had the time to take off their bra just to clip it around a tree. This is honestly a well visited cemetery it resides downtown in walking distance of all the shops and tourism. One thing is for sure people are more playful here then the ghost that haunt it that is for sure!
