When I adventured in Johnsville California and Explored the Plumas Eureka Mine Camp I missed the road out to Jamison City many years ago. Since then it had been on my mind because I kept thinking about how important this mine camp was in the area and how relevant the history meant to this mining community. While Jamison City may not have been a big town or a bustling community it still was a very rich mine that was operated on site but still not as large as the sixty miles of tunnels up around Eureka Peak which can be spotted from this mining camp while hiking.

This mining camp was known for a 52lb gold nugget being extracted from its mine and if you resided here most likely you had to go into town for supplies. But most of the miners that lived here lived in some pretty nice homes which still stand today and quite a few backpackers pass by them probably never thinking about the camps history. History like a family man being down in the mines while that mans wife was baking bread and his two kids were running around the woods playing. But Jamison City was the site of miners living on site working to make a living while raising there families in the harshness of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

While mining did not begin till the 1880s it sprang up as a tent camp of 36 miners while regularly other mining took place in the Plumas-Eureka Lode around 1851 across the valley or just a couple miles away on foot. The mine was rather extensive in Jamison it was just a hole in the ground not far from the residential area with a main vertical shaft with around three levels that ran about 265' today surrounded by a white picket fence a few tailings are protruding out of the ground and the mine is now flooded completely.

Supposedly their are several shafts and adits found on site I did not see any but the main one is visible I did film it as I walked up to it across from one of the largest mining cabins found within this camp probably where the superintendent of the mine lived. Along with at least a dozen other structures scattered throughout the site so its extensive all along this lonely woodsy dirt road which I missed during my first trek up to this area.

The mine and camp resides next to Jamison Creek I can imagine at one time placer mining and gold panning probably was down here. Gold would wash down from Eureka Peak into the creek so it was an easy score but even creeks run out of gold. I am sure today if you panned here you might find some gold flakes no doubt!

In the early 1880s miners came on over from other mine camps where they hiked down into the canyon along the creek where they discovered lodes not far from the creek. The lodes lead to the develop of the Jamison Mine and Mining Company operating till around 1922. It was later purchased by the Plumas-Eureka Annex Mining Company operating under that name. The mining camp consisted of around 590 to nearly 900 acres and included the water rights consisting of four lakes above the mine. Which is why so many backpackers come up here because they hike the rocky trail in Jamison City up to these lakes in the Lakes Basin area including a hidden waterfall so its beautiful country. But you have to be one hell of a hiker to make it above the camp to the lakes its not easy trust me I almost made it to the basin but that first mile is just grueling.

By 1920 the Jamison Mining Company felt the mine not to be very lucrative although at one time it was but they would just lease it to local miners like Sobrero and Company in Johnville. Those miners were able to obtain more gold by stoping and drilling into several additional drifts. In 1921 the mine was sold to an N.M. Srdanovich and the Plumas-Eureka Annex Mining Company for the cost of 12k. During that time its total production was placed at over 2 million dollars and in 1922 the company new most of the mine had been exhausted. This does not mean their were not other veins in the area but it takes money to make money that is just how mining went down here out west. If you want to invest in new shafts and drifts that costs money but they did just that opening up a new ore vein where they operated a twenty stamp mill for many years at the top of the hill just above the residential area.

In 1925 the mine changed hands again when an F.J. Behnemen a trustee continued to operate it till 1927 giving it back to the Jamison Mining Company. Little ore was recovered but they did do around 666' of drifting and crosscutting. They could not go any deeper they filed a report that stated that water was impeding their work further down into the mine and vein or below the drain tunnel level. In 1928 the Plumas-Eureka Mining Company took over again. The president of the company kept trying to tell everyone that the mine produced over $6 Million in gol that others should invest in it. Eventually in the 1930s the mine was passed onto the Carnation Gold Mining Company Ltd. Their are no records of any of the operation or how much they even brought into.

Through 1941 to 1943 lessees treated nearly five hundred tons of ore and 401 tons of old tailings by amalgamation and concentration shipping 112 tons of ore and 3 tons of concentrates via smelter. The amalgamation bullion contained 103 ounces of gold and 13 ounces of silver. Smelted ore yielded 144 ounces of gold and 38 ounces of silver while concentrates smelted 11 ounces of gold and 3 ounces of silver. But mining ceased in 1943 despite their being some profits made! Then in 1959 the property was acquired by the state of California and the site was taken care off by the Plumas-Eureka State Park nearby.

The camp is found on the side of Mt. Washington so it gets really steep if you want to backpack up to the Lakes Basin. If you want to hike above the camp you can hike up to Jamison, Wade, Rock and Grass Lakes. The mine works sit at about 5,350' while the lakes are a couple thousand feet above so most people just pack in stay the night up here because its not an easy hike but if you do hike to these lakes you have to hike through the mining camp which has a blacksmith shop, stables, mine complex or mill rather and multiple residential homes where the miners resided in. I noticed that some of the homes had pipes which means at one time they had running water here which is pretty cool when you think about it given how secluded this camp was it still was ahead of its time.

I did not see all of the camp I am sure their is some things tucked away in the overgrowth supposedly their is wheels and multiple tailings. I noticed on a hill side by the creek was a collapsed wood structure and if you look around you will see some old TNT canisters rusting away. I mean its extensive but you have to search around most of what you will see though is along the trail so you have to pay attention. The state park boarded most of it up to keep it from being damaged just like with the structures at the Plumas-Eureka Mining Camp.

Most people climb the five hundred feet in elevation above the camp to go to the falls its about a harsh rugged mile I almost made it but turned back because the sun was going down and my dog ran away back to my truck so I figured since I no longer saw anything else camp related to turn around. Its a real knee buster of a trail just to get to the falls but if you can do it you can see Jamison Falls which resides above the camp for those interesting in a bit more adventure.

Supposedly I read if you climb higher up you can see some ruins of the Masonic Mine in the area I never saw them and I went a few hundred feet above the camp but maybe that is why others report seeing machinery and wheels that is probably what they are talking about for again those who want a little more adventure its not an easy climb. But if you make it to the 60' falls the views are stellar above the camp and if you go on you can go to many of the lakes many of the miners fished and hiked around at back in the day. Miners would be built like brick houses in locations like this their whole world involved being outdoors if they were not outdoors they were busy working the mines all day.

While Jamison City really was not a city or town I heard some miners did come up here on occasion to get supplies I suppose you could find some things the camp did have a blacksmith shop. Most of these camps around here were close by to one another within a short hike in the woods. I wanted to make sure I came here during the fall because its such a beautiful place to tread around at and explore. But it also goes with the rest of the local history on all our other projects so its a must its just easy to miss the road on in or the trail to hike out to this place. But I have no regrets its a really nice rustic mining camp very cozy and a good place to have a picnic maybe sit by the creek and just take it on in. Their is a wood bridge that spans the creek where people have wedding photos taken at so its a pretty well known place because its part of the state park it just does not get s much attention as the Plumas-Eureka Mining Camp site but it still is worth a gander!
