When you first
set your eyes on the historic town of Jackson California you will gravitate towards a Volcanic
Tertiary Neck the locals refer to as Butte Mountain standing at 2,313' in
elevation. But most folks just call it Jackson Butte and no matter where you go
in Jackson it overshadows the entire region. While Jackson may be a series of
rolling hills the butte is an extinct volcano which was very sacred to the Miwok
Tribe for hundreds of years who would gather seeds, acorns, grass, herbs and
hunt deer around it. The butte is extremely alluring perhaps because it is one
of the most distinctive geological features in the region. When I first came to
Jackson back in 2008 I often would sit back on a hill staring off at the butte
wondering if someday id ever stand on top of it and if I did what would it be
like? Well what I did learn is that being on top of the butte is an entirely
different world as in comparison to the small little bustling towns
below. The first time I visited the butte was in 2008 because at the time I had moved up to Jackson I could not find suitable housing. I ended up being homeless here camping up at Indian Grinding Rock near Black Chasm Caverns. When I was not camping for awhile I lived in a shelter or slept behind a church. I remember meeting this homeless kid who use to sleep with his girlfriend at the top of the butte. I guess you can think of it as a lovers lane but at the time some of the people who did not want to be sleeping on the sidewalks of downtown Jackson preferred to camp out at the top of the butte because it was more serene. So prior to me leaving Jackson someone took me to the top of the butte at the time and he gave me a little tour. Of course back then my camera was out of juice and I was limited so I never was able to put together a nice project for our website until 2016 when I returned to Jackson so that we could compile this volcanic neck for our viewers to enjoy. Before the arrival of gold it was the Mi-Wuk aka Miwok that called Jackson home. They inhabited areas along the springs, flat ridges, creeks and terraces prior to the Europeans who came here to discover the areas rich gold. More then likely they stood on the butte to conduct ceremonies then again hunt the deer that graze on it. On a clear day you can see the Lake Tahoe area even the city of Sacramento, Stockton, High Sierras and Folsom Lake off in the distance. But if you really want to put things into perspective you also can see some really great cityscapes of Jackson along with some of its historic sites like the Kennedy Argonaut Mine, National Hotel and even the Mokelumne River nearby. The views on top are similar stellar and the old abandoned comm's station on top is worth urban exploring as well. Back in the day quite a few mining camps sprung up surrounding the base of Butte Mountain such as Butte City where today all that remains of this camp are ruins of an old general store. Other camps that sprung up were Iowa Flat, French Camp, Slabtown and Clinton. Back in 2008 I almost rented a cozy little historic home with a fireplace, wood floors and meadowy views. Very little however remains of these mining towns today as a matter in fact a majority of homes and structures surrounding this butte are fairly brand new. While you might have nature and pristine beauty above its very different below in these smaller mining towns which have transitioned to ranching. These small towns have churches, cemeteries, small general stores, parks, saloons etc. Personally myself I am more into being as far away as I can from people so returning to Jackson despite how hard it was for me emotionally had not been an issue knowing how isolated the butte is from town. But my time spent up in Jackson was full of mishap after mishap ranging from homelessness to having the windows smashed out of my vehicle to being robbed and getting into fights. In a sense I felt the butte may have been the safest of safest places you could possibly be and so this exploration is very sentimental to me and this is why I decided to return so I could share it with our fans. Much had changed since I visited the butte I believe that some of the road to the top had finally been paved and there were newer no trespassing signs. I guess because others spent so much time loitering if not camping up here its now off limits. While their are many old vineyards and ranches surrounding the butte when you journey here I also seen a few newer homes including a home being built not to far near the summit. With that being said the more people that continue to populate the butte also risk being involved losing there lives to wildfires which are not uncommon here especially back in 2016 when we were at the end of a four year drought and brush was really dry. The Butte Fire killed at least two people up in Mokelumne Hill and Mountain Ranch area nearby. It also burned over 70 thousand acres however most of the wildfire burned dry brush below the butte spreading into Amador and Calaveras Counties. Luckily by the time I returned and arrived here most of the butte with its pristine nature were left untouched. Amadors largest city is Jackson which was founded in 1848 the county was named after a native Californian Jose Maria Amador in 1854 the same year Jackson became the county seat. During the gold rush miners came here in search of gold however in 1862 a raging fire destroyed nearly the entire town. The city was rebuilt with as many as forty-two Civil War era buildings which stand today on Main Street. Back in the day they called the town Bottileas given by the Mexican and Chilean miners were as the story supposedly goes impressed with the number of bottles drooped at a spring that served as a nearby watering hole for miners passing through. The site of the original well has a memorial with a plaque just behind the National Hotel which by the way is said to be one of the most haunted hotels in all of gold country which our team investigated. Jackson is home to some of the deepest mines in the world some of them shafts went down nearly 6 thousand feet deep and today you can tour the grounds of the old Kennedy Mine. While the butte may be one of the more famous geological landmarks the mine in Jackson is a historic one. The Kennedy Gold Mine was named for Andrew Kennedy who was an Irish Immigrant who discovered a quartz outcropping sometime in the 1850's and by 1860 the Kennedy Mining Company had been formed with three partners who begin digging shafts deep below the city of Jackson. The mine operated on and off till it closed its doors in 1878 and in 1886 fifteen people invested almost 100k to reopen the mine under the corporate entity of the Kennedy Mining and Milling Company. In 1898 the company sank a new shaft nearly 2k and eventually it would be sunk to 5912' in depth which became the deepest vertical mine shaft in North America. In 1928 a surface burned all the structures except the stamp mill, old original water wheels and mine office which can be seen today especially from the top of the butte. All the other buildings came after 1928 and the company operated this mine till about 1942 when the US Government closed gold mines due to the war effort. At the time of the mines closing it had produced over 34 million in gold. The butte today is one of Jackson's most prominent features and if I were to be asked what is my favorite part of this old mining town id have to say this would be it. Revisiting the butte for me was a walk down memory lane but it was something I wanted to share with my son and all my viewers. It may not be haunted or a paranormal hotspot but it is the Devils Tower of the west in a sense. Their are so many folks who have spent their lives living in Jackson yet they still have yet to stand on the butte which by far has some of the best views of the smaller town below and region in all of Amador County and with that being said we bring it to all of you!
