We were on the road heading down I-80 through Truckee when we hit miles of ash and smoke caused by the King Fire. At the time we were not aware their was a massive forest fire but sometimes they are so large that the smoke can reach for hundreds of miles. In this case the King Fire it burned 97,000 acres of the ElDorado National Forest caused by arson. The fire was so out of control that it burned a total of 80 structures all of them being peoples homes and twelve firefighters were injured. The fire put the town of Iowa Hill under smoke as a matter in fact you can see from this clip that the national forest and surrounding mountains are at nearly zero visibility. You could smell it in the air cinder, burnt wood and we had no idea what awaited us on the road less traveled. We had a day of adventuring planned in the high sierras hiking around at Placer Big Trees Grove, Sugar Pine Reservoir, Morning Star Lake and the ghost town of Iowa Hill. The gloominess would set the tone for the entire day the sun would be blotched out from morning till night as the first day of this fire ended up raging on for an entire month after I filmed this clip. It can be a scary scenario being on the road journeying to ghost towns or remote forest knowing a fire is looming over the area.

The clip starts off near Colfax as we climb through Smuthers and eventually Live Oak Ravine into Bunch Canyon at Yankee Jim's Bridge just outside of an old mining camp. Today not much remains of Yankee Jim's but a lawless man discovered gold here and eventually the miners of Iowa Hill. In 1853 some of the first hydraulic mining was introduced to the area here it also had the first mining ditch in Placer County. After enjoying the American River and Yankee Jim's the journey is going to get allot more intense as we take you up old Iowa Hill Road. This curvy narrow road high up on the cliffs of the Foresthill Divide is said to be California's most thrilling and intense roads. The road actually use to be the old stage coach wagon route that begin in Colfax and took you up to Iowa City today known as Iowa Hill. Its a very steep graded road there really are no guardrails and some of the road is heavily eroded from years of hydraulic mining that took place in the 1800's. Before you ascend you will be greeted by a raptor peering out from the lush foliage of the Tahoe National Forest eventually crossing over the American River at Mineral Bar before the big climb to Iowa Hill. Truly when it comes to this trek you are King Of The Hill its you taking on one of the sierras greatest river canyons which is very thrilling. This is not a road to take in winter weather and around hair pin curves you have to be careful with oncoming traffic but really its worth the journey as you can see. Eventually ill land you right downtown Iowa Hill.

I begin our journey to Iowa Hill by departing Placer Big Tree Grove heading over Mosquito Ridge and through the Tahoe National Forest following high above the Foresthill Divide. In the beginning of the clip you will see a massive cloud of dust stirred up by cattle being rounded up and herded on a logging road. Eventually ill take you through a barren burnt forest and ended up on the shores of Morning Star Lake today known as Big Reservoir. Back in the day Morning Star was merely a camp perhaps as far as id say suburb of Iowa Hill. Allot of miners did Placer or Hydraulic Mining along the various tributaries of the American River. After this forested hidden gem we moved on to Sugar Pine Reservoir another gem damming Shirttail creek in 1982 creating this reservoir to be used to provide drinking water for the residents of Foresthill. Today both lakes serve as outdoor Mecca's for those who reside up in Iowa Hill and outdoor enthusiast. You can see that its very smoky out that is because during the filming of this clip the King Fire out near Auburn was raging out of control. Therefore during our hike out at both lakes we were under a smoke watch. These small lakes truly are Iowa Hills gems definitely worth a gander if you like to fish, camp, swim or boat. While I love to indulge in history I also like to incorporate the outdoors into what we do.

The Old Iowa Hill Cemetery you see in this clip has three sections Protestant, Masonic and I.O.O.F. internments. Although this is called the old cemetery it is not the first downtown their use to be a cemetery dating back to the founding of the town which was bulldozed to build a homestead however no less this is one of the finest pioneer cemeteries in the mother lode. The first burial that took place here was a little Sarah Ann Lodge whom was buried here in 1856. Many of the pioneers buried here were miners some meant some very tragic ends such as a father and a son who both died in landslides years apart. Others buried here died in epidemics or accidents. While you are watching this clip ill talk about some of the notable burials here such as who they were and how they died. Some pioneers came to Iowa Hill seeking wealth and to live out there lives here others simply never made it out! These graves tell a story about those who braved this rugged wilderness combing the hillsides for gold even if it costs them their lives. This pioneer graveyard is nestled in the Tahoe National Forest outside of town people who lived lives of love, hardship, success and failure all found buried here on Banjo Hill.

St. Dominic's Cemetery was originally called St. Joseph's the earliest grave found here is from 1859 of a child and a year later his brother was buried next to him. It was around 1860 that a church was built at this site so that Catholic residents of Iowa Hill had a place they could seek eternal rest at. The church nearly blew down in a wind storm in 1864 but the church was rebuilt. In 1922 the church was damaged in a fire that nearly burned all of Iowa Hill to the ground leaving only a few historic remnants behind. In the early 1930's another terrible windstorm struck down the church leaving behind a pile of wood that the locals eventually would take to build new homes. Today the church of course is long gone but their are quite a few graves that were some of the towns first Catholic pioneers who led lives here. Rumor has it the Chinese Cemetery but all that remains are piles of rocks and empty graves. Father Shanhan came to this area to spread faith but it was Father Dalton that dedicated this church and probably held funeral services on these very grounds for most of the interments found here.

Mining began in Iowa Hill in the early 1850's founded by a group of Iowans. At one time it was known as Iowa City but a series of fires, wind storms and exhausted mines led to its demise so it never took the county seat. At one time 100 thousand dollars in gold revenue per week was extracted from the towns mines but three fires left the town in ashes. This was a major gold rush town back in its hey day it had four hotels, dance hall, general stores, fraternal lodges, post office, clothing shops, theater, tin store, dry good shop, two churches, four cemeteries, gambling hall, school, billiard hall, bowling alleys, saloons, couple hundred log cabins and over 100 structures alone facing Main Street. Today downtown is nearly a ghost town all that really stands is the vault, fire hall, cemeteries, general store and a few remnants of the past. At one time it was proposed to make Iowa Hill the state capitol of California. Today only about 200 folks live in Iowa Hill despite the series of deaths, tragedies, brutal weather and fires the town has managed to survive.

The old stage coach wagon route begin in Colfax then steeply climbed all the way to the top of the Foresthill Divide where Iowa Hill is located. At the time ranchers, miners and stage coaches had to cross this bridge which was replaced in 1928 that you see in the clips. Ill start off leaving Iowa Hill taking all of you on a thrilling ride along the cliffs of this old stagecoach route. Their are no guard rails here just cliffs leading to a very gloomy doom below where the American River flows. The road is very narrow it has a fair share of curves but takes you down to the bottom of the canyon. Today really all that is left of Mineral Bar is the old bridge which spans the river but at one time hydraulic and placer gold mining was done here. Mining along the river was dangerous allot of banks would collapse killing miners all the time who are now buried up at Iowa Hill. The road is paved heading down to Mineral Bar but its heavily eroded from hydraulic mining and the elements. Sort of makes you wonder what early pioneers were thinking when they founded a town up here or a mining camp like Mineral Bar.
