I heard about Cahokia for years being a place of power even the paranormal so I was excited when I went to Illinois to be able to visit this site. Its such a mysterious location because it did not tie into the local native history in fact most natives locally and tribes did not know much about Cahokia. I believe the city was formed or the mound builders came from another place maybe even from the south and branched off from the Aztecs forming their own community. So its a very mysterious location which is why I could not wait to visit it and not just that but also ancient.
 
The area the mounds reside is such a green beautiful place with trees everywhere, hills and even a lake we passed by. Its in an area that is somewhat rural and when you drive on up you can see mounds everywhere. This area has over 100 mounds each mound holds artifacts, burials of the elite and other items. I am not a stranger to native mounds I been to various sites like this especially in my days when I lived in Florida for a short term so burial mounds are not uncommon. However, in the central US they are a bit more rare to find.
 
I visited the museum first I wanted to see some of the artifacts, huts, depictions, read about the Cahokia site etc. I am a huge history buff most of you know I do not do just the paranormal to seek thrills I do it because I want to learn about how the history is relevant to the paranormal in an area we investigate. This city was huge it had as many as 100k living here at one time. They also did human sacrifices and the elite often abused its citizens. In fact this city was larger then London back its hey day. 
 
I learned quite a bit browsing the museum so that when I can write a prologue I can do it with some dignity for our viewers on our website. This area used to be flourishing in fact it was heavily wooded at one time and much more wetter. The men would hunt and gather while the women might have taken care of the home and the crops. 
 
I could see why the area was lush and flourishing when I left the museum I saw a dead bird laying on the ground perhaps an omen? But off behind one of the mounds was a herd of deer just grazing away did not expect to see wildlife at this site but I did so that was pretty cool.
 
Many of the mounds have labels which talk about the excavations including a mound that contained some kings and queens. The biggest mound found here is Monk's Mound its over a 100' to the top but the views of St. Louis in the distance are priceless if your into the whole cityscape thing. I usually am because cities make great photography from afar.
 
I focused at times on trying to get EVP other times taking EMF readings not much you can do but wander around mounds on the grounds. But these mounds are areas that do contain graves including one mound where they found men missing there heads and hands. So their are some grim finds associated with Cahokia but what is even more strange is how one day it just ceased to exist and nobody knows where its people went or what  caused the city to fall.
 
I think more or less just standing on Monks Mound puts the area into perspective because you can see all the mounds from on top and realize this was a big city. The dirt they brought in was brought in with hard labor to create the mounds that exist today. Their was no earth movers or trucks everything was done by hand.
 
I also took to the car went up the road a little bit to see woodhenge supposedly the site had numerous ones but the one that now stands is a remake. But this is how it would look back in the day because the natives here used them as a sun clock so they could monitor the change of seasons for growing corn and times of the year like for example prepping for winter.
 
The entire site is very fascinating you could spend all day just wandering around studying the history here. I did hear a couple gun shots when I was on Monks Mound looked over at some bluffs in the distance notice smoking rising on up. I am not sure what that was about but I thought that was a bit odd its such a lush area you would not expect to see what looked like trees on fire.
 
Honestly, St Louis is just across the river its like two different worlds because its rural here but just over the river nearby is the city and a major one with millions of people. But that city did not exist only woods at one time and the Cahokians would journey to that area to hunt game and canoe along the river nearby.
 
My experience here was special in a sense I could not ask for more then to take a stroll in an ancient city. Its a beautiful place big trees, lush hills etc but its the site that is powerful because of what it stood for and meant. It was a place people would migrate to or make pilgrimages. Not everyone that came here stayed some just visited for its ceremonies which often came with the price of blood. So areas with that much trauma, death and even exhilarating events tend to be great sites to capture the paranormal or unseen energy for sure.
 
After leaving Cahokia I went back to a place called the Seven Gates Of Hell to do a daytime exploration followed by the Krome Family Cemetery. Just to kind of wind down the day since I spent quite a bit of time in Cahokia. But what an amazing place one could walk around here and step back into time just imagining the huts, smoke rising up and ceremonies taking place atop of Monks Mound.

I heard what sounded loud gunshot or even a small boom explosive noise at least twice. followed by this plume of smoke in the hills. This ancient city would have extended all the way out to the bluffs of the Mississippi River. This city at the time was the largest in North America This bird was laying upside down dead not sure what killed it may have been a cat or it could have flown into the glass at the museum nearby. I know is not paranormal but the reality is that death at this site came in many forms ranging from disease, battles and even sacrifices at this site.
