Oakland's St. Mary's Cemetery

There is no way to get to St. Mary's from Temple Sinai or Mountain View Cemetery. They are separated by a wall with chain link fencing. I wish they would put up wrought iron or a nice wall that fit the areas architecture. However when you do enter this cemetery there is a beautiful archway and gates.

There also is a Columbarium next store and beautiful church. Theology is quite present near St. Mary's but this burial ground was for Oakland's Catholic population. The cemetery runs along the entire hillside split into three tiers with a driving loop throughout it. It appears that the higher you go the more prominent the interments get and expensive the gravestones are.

I did not do any paranormal work here but I did hike around take some photos and videos. Its not as big as Mountain View but its a large place and has a chapel at the bottom of it. At the top of the cemetery are many wealthy interments with very extravagant crypts. I guess you can say St. Mary's had its own little millionaires row as well. One isle of crypts is very well to do Italian family names its kind of funny because you feel like your in some mobster movie. Some of the names were of some pretty prominent families in Oakland California. The crypts are nice but some of them have wood in place of an actual door on them.

As most of you know that many Italian families are Roman Catholic I know I came from a family who was. I never had gotten into it but I do understand the basis of the theology. The Italian craftsmanship that goes into these angel sculptures are amazing. I kind of found a few statues a big creepy there are many of baby Jesus being held or being rocked. You may see an angel statue with no head or some that look like they are crying.

I seen this statue of this little girl holding a teddy bear dragging it on the ground in a night gown or sun dress. But the statue is creepy it makes you wonder if it is a sculpture is kind of what the little girl looked like who was buried there. It kind of resembled those old creepy dolls not trying to sound offensive its just that at times statues can have that eerie look to them when they get weathered over the years.

I also ran into a brick crypt it kind of look like a small chapel but like most crypts found here they are all at the top of the hill. From either cemetery across from one another one can see where the most prominent citizens are buried and this is the case with both of them.

The mausoleums are at the bottom of the hill while many of the statues seem to reside in between the crypts up on top and them. Its easy to take one single swipe and see a 1000 crosses/angels here. Its a nice cemetery it really is and it deserved some film footage and photography.

I am not a religious person per say but I have found theological sites to contain paranormal activity such as apparitions or strange audio related EVP's. I did not work with this one other then filming and photography. However being that it borders Temple Sinai and Mountain View if those turn up something good then their is a possibility unseen energy exist here as well. Many of the men buried here were Masons or part of fraternal organizations perhaps some even carves the thousands of stones found here.

We were out of time luckily for me I was near the Oakland Airport to pick up Leona. She had scored some Raiders tickets against the Vikings and so the morning after this cemetery adventure they were going to see the game. I felt like I had actually won because I did show up in time to pick up Leona I knew it would take her a bit to get outside the terminal so it worked out really nice.

We checked into Motel 6 in Oakland on 8480 Edes Ave at first you think hey there is a pool and the Colosseum is nearby. Sadly this is not Orchard Park's Ralph Wilson Stadium. The area was not very nice then again everywhere I drove around Oakland except north or south of it seemed to have allot of issues going on.

When we arrived at the hotel room there was cigarette ashes on the floor, burn holes in the bed spread, air condition unit was falling apart, rat traps along the wall near your room, five channels, no wifi, hookers, partying maids who could not speak English and just over the fence a tent city. When I say tent city I am talking scores of homeless people, vagrants and people who make there home with a few tent poles or a refrigerator box. I seen some people make a home out of garbage bags no less my point is that this hotel might be good for an hour bang bang I kind of had to stay here a couple of days LMAO.

Its all good now though I can look back and kind of laugh at it. Of course my main concern is being robbed. The crime in this area is rather high as a matter in fact Tammy and Leona told me after they had left the football game some dude had all his windows smashed out. Oakland saddens me folks there are rats everywhere, shacks, homeless people and it looks like a scene from The Walking Dead. There are piles of garbage everywhere along the curb, peoples patios, junked cars, homeless sleeping with there feet hanging into the street, gangs, clothes strung all over the sidewalks, litter, mattresses laying all over etc etc I could go on!

After we checked into the hotel Leona, Tammy and I went to TGIF's which has great food and drinks. We went up to Union City south of Oakland. I could not stay in the city its bad real bad and I think that something needs to be done before the problem gets so out of hand that were looking at a disaster waiting to happen. Ordinances to clean up garbage or putting criminals to work making them beautify the city need to be implemented. Therefore I just had to get out for a bit for dinner do not get me wrong the cemeteries are gorgeous but there are not many historic sites downtown.

I give TGI Fridays a four out of five stars up in Union City on 31900 Dyer Street and I am going to tell you why. We made sure we had ordered our drinks prior to happy hour then we ordered more even though we were not finished with what we had to save on the bill. The waiter was nice but he spilled our green beans on the table never replaced them, talked our ear off and when we had gotten the bill back we realized they overcharged us 20 dollars practically so then we had to have him go back and fix it.

The food was great we had these pretzel breadsticks with a tasty cheese sauce, pot stickers and fried up green beans with this nice spicy dressing. We also had a cheesy spinach flat bread and some drinks to go with it. I had a couple long island ice teas with a Terra Massu martini which btw cost 13 dollars not sure why another reason why I gave it four stars because its not a huge martini and they really should charge half that cost. Cheaper drinks means ill be likely to order off the menu more most people agree with me.

So drinks were a tad bit to steep but the food was great I had a nice Alaskan whitefish dinner with garlic and all the trimmings. We had appetizers while waiting for Ann to show up a friend of Leona's then we had dinner. I cant complain I ate and I drank hearty it was nice especially after a hard days work exploring cemeteries in Oakland. I am always up for having a good time and partying my friends know that.

The next day was the Raiders game I took the ladies as close as I could get them to the stadium. I have to admit the T-shirts the peddlers on the streets were selling were pretty nice. But since I am a Bills fan that would be sacrilege. I had no plans on going to the game because I needed to get some other projects done which also kind of took a dive bomb. Therefore since the last place I did visit in Oakland was St. Mary's.

While the ladies were at the game I was trying to do a documentary and exploration of the old 16th Street Station. Let me just say the neighborhood looks like a war zone its that bad. I could not visit the train station because as of recently they put high fencing up and there doing some sort of work here. Not to mention the fact that I would have been the only vehicle within a mile therefore I am sure if I was inside exploring id come back and see the car up on cinder blocks along with the lap top coming up missing trust me. It was bad there was tent camps under the expressway which runs right above the old station and allot of industrial complexes it was a no go.

I should have taken a photo at least but after seeing the building tagged, cars twisted and mangled, homeless people hiding in the high brush, dozens of mattresses along the street, tent cities and rats I was done. I was so disgusted I did not even take a photo I tried a few times getting out and was just in utter shock. I decided no more explore or investigations ill just go do a little fishing! I did do some driving around the city particularly the port of Oakland seen some big ships but nowhere to fish at least nowhere the fish do not swim upside down lol.

I cant find the pier the city is so big you have 100th and 100th ave so I went to a bait shop and could not find the city pier. I ended up buying squid and anchovies however the gentleman had no shrimp nor did they understand English very well. As a matter in fact when I asked if they had mullet they were clueless. In Florida mullet can catch you just about anything including shark! But I will say Mike's bait was affordable and I had gotten allot for a total of 8 dollars.

I ended up fishing near where the bay and a channel that runs behind Alameda island resides. I seen the coast guard come down the channel and a sail boat but other then that it was very quiet here. I did not get a single bite I did however catch garbage multiple times. Then I seen a sign that showed which fish are safer to eat then others in the bay area. There was also a warning not to eat the crabs because they are toxic and contain some acid which can kill a human.

I was so made I went to the car and I filled my pipe sparking one. Nobody wants to fish in the bay if they are going to catch a boot or someone's trash. The island is really nice across the channel or inlet but there are no fish I am telling you expect to catch everything but a fish. Even if you catch crabs you cant eat them damn things lol. But I did have this wooden pier to myself over the water and I chilled for a little while.

It was time to pick up Tammy and Leona from the game boy what a fiasco that was. I had gotten off the expressway and a cop redirected me back onto it. No matter what direction I came from I could not get to the hotel nor the girls. Even though I was only a couple miles away from them it took me a couple hours to get to them. Most of the roads are blocked off due to the game, cops send you on a detours and I ended up driving through the hood taking back streets till I was able to get to the hotel. They walked from the Colosseum quicker then I could drive it was just total utter chaos. I also drove past a crime seen down some side street and the cops had it blocked off.

I had some Raiders fans saying some shit to me good thing I was not wearing my Bills attire. I guess the ladies told me some punk some screaming at some Vikings fans and it was escalating. The way I look at it is why do fans of these sports teams have the need to show violence. Football is a competitive sport that should in fact lessen the violence and bring out good sportsmanship between two teams battling out. But fans smashing windows, beer bottles, threatening fans of the other team, screaming at me etc are acting like a bunch of fools. Football is a sport that brings people together. I think people need to just appreciate the game for itself not the colors, logos or name of the team.

When I arrived at the hotel room we decided to go up to Berkeley and get out of the city of Oakland so we went to Popeye's Chicken on 1775 San Pablo Ave. I honestly in my head thought if we order a meal not only will we save but it would feed all three of us. What kind of 8 piece meal only comes with one breast? We had to order two more then found out no other white meat comes with it.

The lady who was at the register spoke poor English as a matter in fact I asked for plates she gives me a place mat yet we have nothing to eat our sides with or off of. I then had to get the manager to get her to release to us some sporks and containers to eat out of. They were out of almost every dipping sauce so they gave me one then when I asked them for some they still messed up. I am not sure what shit they are smoking but ill have what they are having!

The entire lobby was trashed like a frat party hit it and I understand its a bustling college town students come here to get food real fast then go. But if you are busy why are you understaffed and why is there nobody to clean the lobby. Nobody wants to sit on a greasy chair or eat off a dirty ass table. As a matter in fact I had to move the booth it was all jacked up. I also ordered spicy garlic butterfly shrimp and I get these small breaded shrimp instead they filled my order wrong but I just dealt with it because if you stand in line it takes 10 minutes to have someone ask can I help you. The ice tea had no tea it was ice water and my chicken strips were so dry I nearly choked to death. It was not Oakland that nearly killed me but a hard piece of chicken from Popeye's oh joy!

The garbage cans were full nobody ever cleans the lobby nobody gives a shit and nobody cares. But no less I ate and that was the main thing to break bread with Tammy and Leona. The night was still young so I took the ladies out to this peninsula overlooking the bay in Berkeley where you could see bridges lit up off in the distance. There was a fat cat eating a mouse and apparently a car parked way off in the dark. This is the area where people pick up hookers then they park back here why lie its the truth. However its an okay place to park and enjoy the bay at night. They call this area the Golden Gate fields and there are some small foot trails in the area.

I also drove downtown its pretty historic allot of shops and definitely bustling but not chaotic like Oakland or San Fran. There is also an old gate that crosses the creek we visited it was all lit up so we could not really seen it but being on campus was fun. I told the ladies we need to go somewhere so I could drink out of a beer funnel they think I am full of shit but really I was ready to partay lol and I meant it. I did not find parties but I did see allot of college coed girls who wore outfits so short I thought they had nothing on and they managed to do it on a night I was shivering my ass off in a leather jacket lol. Even with the hair on my chest I was cold these girls must be faking being warm LMAO!

I have to say Berkeley is an amazing university which its giant tower overlooks the bay. I am sure there is allot more to see in Berkeley I hear its a pretty 420 friendly college town so I felt right at home here. It was kind of a chilly very windy night so we really did not do much but check out downtown a little and visit the campus which by the way is so large that you can get lost believe me I had gotten lost. I was getting lost on purpose so I would not have to go stay at the hotel in Oakland lol.

When we arrived back at the hotel I was pleased to see security despite all the hookers and rowdy party goers. It seems like the parties that transpire at this hotel last all night in the parking lot with blasting rap music and people getting all loud. I had seen some dudes with tables set up in the parking lot and a mini bar lol. They did not seem to like my presence much I found the vehicle had been keyed the next day by someone so yeah thanks Oakland kiss my ass too!! Why cant folks just be civilized?

I told the ladies next time I am choosing the hotels when they go to see a game next year. I tend to have a very good track record when it comes to reserving hotels. Then again I have done allot of traveling over the years and I expect to get what I pay for. I have no issue being the bell boy or designated driver I cant guarantee I wont be stoned but ill get you to point a and b safely and like the secret service more then happy to take a bullet for you also unless you piss me off your on your own lol.

When I arrived back at the hotel I went online and had gotten a nice hotel for the Half Moon Bay. My fourth day was going to be spent in the Redwood Forest and Purisima up in the Santa Cruz mountains near Half Moon. I was pretty much done with the big city and dealing with paying all this money for so very little. Its important that when you get a hotel in a city like Oakland you probably do it in the next town over even if that means you having to drive a little more its safer that way. Next time I will find the room and they will be happy lol. I am glad I did not get shot but no less the hotel gets 1 star out of 5 from me.

Oakland saddens me its easy to make some light of the situation but I spent a few hours myself driving around the city. It did not matter where I went you see allot in a short time if you look for it. Its very poverty stricken abandoned sites, rats nest, homelessness, crime, accidents, deaths etc its an everyday thing here. One of the finer things you can enjoy however is St. Mary's, Temple Sinai and Mountain View Cemeteries. Before the city was in peril the people and pioneers buried here had a different vision of the future.

Although this is not paranormal my job is to report my finds to the public when we do research at any location then again anything I find strange on my journeys I always hope to share with our viewers. In this case upon exploring the cemetery I found that nearly every crypt I came across was either boarded up or had its entrances entombed with bricks. I have never seen anything like this before in my journeys but can only speculate that they were sealed up due to vandals who either broke the stained glass on some of the doors or they were put here to prevent the crypts from being robbed. It was not uncommon that in the 1800's wealthy and prominent individuals who were Catholic were buried with their jewelry. Some of it could be worth 100's of thousands of dollars. Unfortunately this also tends to draw in grave robbers especially involving crypts because they provide accessibility as opposed to those buried within the ground. I did witness a crypt in Mountain View Cemetery next door that had its stained glass windows on the steel door busted out probably because someone had tried to break into it. It would appear these crypts however were already broken into because someone may have tried to unlock them from the inside reaching on in therefore wood boards and bricks were put in there places. I have only witnessed one grave robbing many years ago I was doing research late one night at a cemetery when a group of young kids was trying to dig up a grave and one of them through a rock through a mausoleum windows. So I know this kind of thing happens and well if I see you do it chances are I am going to knock your teeth out so DON'T because you never know if I am watching!
After doing research at Mountain View, Home Of Eternity and St. Mary's Cemetery we met up with friends to party at TGI Friday's.  I had a fish fry with rice, zucchini and mixed veggies along with a variety of yummy appetizers. I think my drink was the most expensive it cost me around 14 dollars but it sure did the trick and so I had plenty of stories to share with all. Part of what we do is try to make our journeys fun yeah we have our moments of seriousness but what good is the research if you cannot celebrate your finds afterwards? Being with friends or those you care about is what life is about none of us will be here forever we must make good memories with one another. So when I was not doing research I was living it up something most folks should do and that kind of advice you can take to the grave. Nobody pays me to be a paranormal investigator its all volunteer work therefore were going to have some fun in between what we do!
Not to far from St. Mary's I also did a little fishing in Oakland it would appear the only good thing about being on the water was toking my pipe other then that do not fish anywhere near the city. All I caught for over an hour was garbage such as diapers, food wrappers, tampons and plant life. It would appear that between the city looking like a war zone and the water being polluted that really the only refuge from either is to spend time in the cemeteries. This is just me myself and I fishing one of Oakland's waterways not to far from the bay. No less this is all part of the journey and others can see how I live my life as a paranormal investigator. I do a little fishing, good eats and partying in between my travels between paranormal locations. Sometimes it gets a bit lonely to be honest with you I have not found a good paranormal investigator or fit for our team in years. People are lazy very few want to fish, party and chase ghosts! But I have no regrets except for fishing at this location! lol
I also had gotten to tour Berkeley University which is very amazing and history in every way. If you like hot girls, history and a really cool university feel free to walk around campus like I did. I also had some Popeye's Chicken do not eat at the one in Berkeley holy shit it was bad real bad. The chicken was dry, hard, chairs tipped over, every table dirty, half of the staff spoke little English, they messed up on my order, did not give me any sauce, dirty lobby, unfriendly and the list goes on and on. However, the university is definitely worth a gander many of the professors and scholars are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery.
