Overbrook Insane Asylum also Known as the Old Essex County asylum was built in the later 1800s. Its not as elaborate or as large as some asylums in the state of NJ but it sure does make some good exploration as its wheel chairs and medical records still remain in the deteriorating 5 buildings that sit up on a hillside. I honestly had no plans to investigate this place I knew about it and was put on the spot by Adam a member I met up with. The asylum is still partially open and is heavily patrolled period all day long therefore going inside this place was really taking a big chance considering this would be our second investigation in the state of NJ one wrong move and our whole trip could be blown. Unfortunately it was my fault as the organizations owner to let an investigator/member take a lead in our expedition cause the problem is that once you give someone to much responsibility they end up jeopardizing it. I been doing this long enough to know that you stick with the plans and although this was not a bad little place that Adam took me to it really was not on the agenda. I made the best of it and basically worked on trying to get a few good tunnels and a couple buildings in due time. Overbrook at one time was said to be an orphanage then it became a place where cancer and pneumonia patients were cared for many of them died. Their are about 5 to 10 brick buildings on site that are all connected by underground tunnels some said to go on for miles. Not sure how true this is since some of the tunnels we took only appeared to go for a few hundred feet. The asylum is on about 350 acres containing around 50 buildings of course the 5 to 10 were left to deteriorate. Some have said to run into workers in the tunnels since explorers often get lost and end up in the used areas again not a good scenario to run into someone who works here. Rumor has it if you take one of the manholes on the property off it will be covered again or vice versa not sure how true that is but a place with so many tragedies is sure to have some amount of energy to it. The mental asylum is rather liberal the patients are not restricted with fences you can actually go up to them and talk to them. I think that would be great to interview patients about the place but then again what is keeping some of the abandoned buildings alive is the fact patients still seek treatment here. Some people get Overbrook Asylum Confused with this one at this link nearby... http://www.mountainsanatorium.net although the one at this link is great nothing remains of it so Overbrook is your next best choice at least for someone who wants to learn about the paranormal or experience it. I did not find this place very haunted at all foreboding yes some floors have holes in it and are weak. The basements which are used to provide heat, electric, water and cooling are very narrow and have low ceilings. Wheel chairs still remain along with other hospital equipment. Their is a story about a man who once kidnapped two people and killed them both. He was admitted to Overbrook and escaped when he was admitted a second time they refused. Perhaps because Overbrook was not the type of asylum for the criminally insane. But once could see how easy it would be to escape from this place like your typical NJ Asylums that are like castles this place was set up more like a school house or campus full of dorm rooms. NJ is a great state for asylums I actually had plans to attend one that was 150 years old but could not fit it into our agenda we were going to do another one our last night with many tunnels but my team threw a mutiny on me. Sad to say that half of the asylums in New England are gone alot of it is because they are no longer needed but also deterioration eventually deems them to unsafe even for us Ghostbusters. © By Lord Rick
