Upon my first initial visit to the Old Indian Stewart School we drove down the various streets which are littered with old stone buildings which for me remind me of temples. The area Tammy pulls off for me to film I call the cross roads. Different roads leads to various buildings all the way from class rooms to dorms and even staff housing.
This very view of the Carson Valley has not changed very much. Were actually not to far away from the Dat-So-La-Lee Cemetery where many of the students were buried here including one of the last ancient basket weavers. You can see the water tower and school from afar. Most of the valley floor here is full of sage brush but at one time the land was used for farming and ranching through the student program.

The original dormitories were Victorian architecture however over time these temples of stone which were built by apprentice Masonry students were taught by the Hope tribe. What makes this location special is it is where some of the original buildings were first erected which includes the superintendents home, administration building and dorms. Eventually a few decades later many Vernacular style buildings came to be as more students attended campus here in the 1900's.
This area we are walking through is full of class rooms and girls dormitories. Also nestled between them all is an old ball court which the hoops no longer have nets on. You can kind of envision children playing and laughing here. Its an eerie little part of the campus because you knew that at one time some of these students who played on this court did not survive a year into their schooling here.

Throughout the campus are many buildings that contain workshops. Some of those were facilities were of woodworking, masonry, cooking, sewing, laundry, painting, agricultural, athletics, painting, carpentry, nursing and other vocational trades. The property has many large buildings that were used to assimilate the native American children into society.
Since the dawn of the beginning of this schools history not much has changed as to the west you have the snowy sierras and to the east you have the Pine Nut Mountains. This is the same view you or I would see in the 1890's it has changed very little. So aside from the school being a strict place of assimilation it was very scenic for the students who attended campus here.

Athleticism was very big at the boarding school that is why it contained not one but two very large gymnasiums. Today the old baseball diamond and football field are consumed by the high desert sage brush. But at one time children competed in various sports events and more then likely against other schools in Carson City.
The agricultural and ranching center were some of the large stone buildings on the premises. They taught the young men how to far, ranch and grow their own food. This was essential considering much of Nevada was built on this factor. These are some of the most amazing barns I have ever placed my eyes on out west.

This courtyard is surrounded by buildings more then likely they served as classrooms and dorms at one given time. I guess one can picture looking out the window staring into the court yard wondering when class would end and when you could go outside to play. There are other places on the campus like this and they remain quiet from external influences.
The sky is a bright pink and orange just as the sun is about to go down. If you have not seen a wild western sunset this would be it. The water tower today is a park which also commemorates veterans. But at one time the tower was vital as a source of water so the students could bathe, drink and have clean clothes. Also the water was used to create hot steam which would be pushed through underground tunnels to various buildings during the cooler months.

This cemetery was the site of the Wungnema House which was home to eight children who were from the Hopi Nation. Although this cemetery was erected in the 1940s unlike the older burial ground of the 1800's it does contain many of the students, teachers and there family members who have passed away. The cemetery is a short walk from the school and sorry the first half was out of focus. It was just so windy and dusty here I had allot of issues so I kept it short due to strange equipment failure.
