Temple Sinai Cemetery Oakland
 
Traffic in San Fran was utterly ridiculous we just left the Serrano but it took us two hours to get even to the bridge to cross the bay. Every street is either one way or you cant make a left turn therefore even if your near the expressway you have to go a couple miles just to find an on ramp to get on it. There were detours and I had to go many blocks slowly just to get out here.
 
I never done any projects in Oakland there really is not that much to check out in the city perhaps in some of the burbs but the cities greatest historic asset is Mount Sinai, Mountain View and St. Mary's Cemeteries which all reside next to one another with Mountain View overlooking the entire city of Oakland.
 
Each place gets there own section on the website since they all are unique burial grounds and historic in there own forms. I focused most of our investigating on Mountain View but my first stop was Mount Sinai Cemetery which is Hebrew and amazingly rather quite extensive.
 
I did not realize that Mountain View also bordered the Jewish Cemetery. I did not spend a long time in it because we had gotten here late and my original project was meant more or less to focus on Mountain View Cemetery.
 
However what I can tell you is you have this thousand by two hundred foot strip of land that is full of graves. Allot of them date back to the 1800's and surprisingly are in much better shape then other Hebrew cemeteries I been to.
 
As a matter in fact I seen a crypt here which has been the only one I ever have found in a Jewish Cemetery. Believe me there were some graves leaning others against one another and some cracked or even slightly off on there pedestals. But overall you have three tiered rows or isles of interments with beautiful white steps that lead up to each tier.
 
I also seen statues and other types of gravestones you normally would not see in a Hebrew Cemetery. Towards the very back of the graveyard is the temple which is also a nice piece of architecture. Hebrew is written on many of the stones just as pebbles one can find on some of the monuments which is also a Hebrew practice. 
 
There were some pretty purple flowers growing here it was nice and some of the granite monuments were huge. One of the large ones however appeared to have been pushed over or it eventually fell when it begin to lean forward. I seen quite a few Jewish Masons buried here as well which I thought was really awesome.
 
I have to say out of the past few years of visiting Hebrew Cemeteries this burial ground is my favorite Jewish Cemetery. Its so historic and allot of work went into the engravings found on the stones especially the ones with the Hebrew writings.
 
Behind Temple Sinai is a wall with a fence on the other side you can see going up the hill graves from St. Mary's Cemetery. Also behind Temple Sinai are mausoleums its a bit strange because if there was no fence here everything would just kind of blend from one burial ground to the next.
 
There are some trees which provide shade for the visitor but its not as vibrant as Mountain Views lush gardens. Temple Sinai is somewhat sandwiched in between St. Mary's and Mountain View. While overshadowing it is the gothic and Catholic chapels.
 
I did enjoy my stroll through here allot of birds, beautiful green grass and history. It appeared that many newer interments are buried along side some of the earliest pioneers who came to the area. Its very beautiful all the way from the stone steps found leading tier to tier to many of the beautifully unscripted stones. We would eventually move on to investigate the gigantic Mountain View Cemetery.
