The terrain surrounding ghost towns such as this are very rugged and miles from nowhere. When I offroad to such ghost towns I try to imagine how hard the miners and early pioneers had it to reach their destinations by ox or horse wagon. As you can see from this scenic drive Masonic is located in a very vast wilderness and time was not on our side as the sun was started to travel behind the mountains. This is the road to nowhere!
This small hole in a rock face would take me into the depths. As you can tell in the video I would have to get on my side and slide on into the hole at a steep angle to get down into the mine. The mine is just outside of Masonic fairly typical of the the town site hence why tram systems were later installed to transport the ore to the local mill.

The mine is not very extensive but it is a fairly deep tunnel where I spotted a giant rodent that I nearly stepped on while filming. Wait till you meet him in person as we reveal a huge surprise towards the end of the video. At first I did not know what kind of rodent I had seen to me any kitty sized rat can be intimidating especially when your trapped inside a small room with it.
I decided to film the rodent earlier we discovered in the tunnels. What I didn't realize is that his curiosity is what made him most friendly. This is a bushy tailed wood rat they are often found in mines and in wooded areas much like Masonic. This is a wonderful film because you get to see him in full form with the camera within inches from him for educational use. Later on we realized that we made friends with him as he walked with us throughout the mine standing on ledges and studying us. They are very social creatures and one of my favorite rodents.

Masonic at one time was known as Lenora although it resides in a narrow canyon it was divided into three districts. It had a tram to transport ore from the Pittsburgh-Liberty mine where eventually one of the Co-owners named Philips was found broke and deceased at the bottom of a shaft. The town had it all a boarding house, post office, general store, mines, mills and around 1000 residents. Eventually when the mines became exhausted all that was left behind was its ghost that surround this scenic country.
My son discovered on top of some rock formations a bone. I always have to remain vigilante of any human remains as on occasion a lost hiker or murder victim may be found. On a positive note we discovered later it was a shoulder blade of a deer. More then likely a mountain lion drug it up here for a midnight snack as we found tracks below the rocks. Later on the investigation Tammy heard growling thus we put it all together that Masonic is a place where a predatory beast lurks!

Certain sections of Masonic are rather overgrown or forested. Not to far from here Tammy heard a loud growling noise. She came to get me and this is when I discovered these natural dens which could provide shelter to a mountain lion, bear or some other animal. It appears that the dens had been modified a bit perhaps a hermit or even Bigfoot has used them ill never know for sure but nonetheless this video shows one of them and they are pretty unique.
The mine we found resides below middle town and the mill in Masonic. It was a good find considering we found the entrance hidden in the forest. The mines tunnels have strung up Christmas Lights and the walls inside bleed red. Their are bats everywhere and its just a fine example of Masonic s earlier days when gold was first discovered here.

This is my final overview of the Masonic area while leaving dodge. As you can see at night traversing these rugged roads takes a little patience. I enjoyed my time out at Bodie, Chemung and Masonic. Their is just something about being in seclusion exploring these regions history and mystery. Maybe I am just rambling but my day turned out to be amazing as we uncovered bones, bats, rats, mines, ghost towns and even crazy backwoods folk. It doesn't get any better then that!
