What you are viewing is the old toll road once built so that the gold found in Johntown could be transported to Dayton. I am offroading through a cottonwood forest as we are trying to locate the town site and a good area to park for the journey ahead.
The forest is a bit dismal as many of the trees are deadwood however if they could talk what would they say? As parts of the canyon narrow the foliage is heavier due to the creek which helps add growth. Many feel this area is haunted and perhaps some of these trees were just starting to sprout during this mining camps hey day.

This unique area of high desert is full of soft sand and dunes. At one time not to far from this very location tents, restaurants, stores, shops etc resided here. Not much remains but a few scattered remnants of the past found buried in the sands of time.
Although this sand circle is most likely caused by wind and water erosion it still is a very strange find. Thus I thought I would show you the ripple effect caused from it. In addition to strange finds we did find a few carpenter nails left behind when the camp died off. Its pretty obvious that nature is reclaiming her land where the mining camp once boomed.

This small den may have been formed during this regions volcanic era. It may have been even at one time a cave or lava tube. As we climb the steep rocky hillside we make our way towards it searching for clues of the past. More then likely early miners maybe even hermits probably used the den as shelter from the elements as it overlooked Johntown below.
This wash or gulch is full of jagged red rocks as we carefully make our way back down to the toll road. We went exploring it to take a look at a nearby mine. Unlike most of the landscape this narrow wash surrounded by its red rock is unique in itself.

I would like to say in my behalf I get an A for effort and an F for being to big to fit into this very small mine entrance. Unfortunately most of the mines in this once booming district have either caved in or were sealed by the state. I realized more or less I was in trouble when I became stuck inside this rabbit sized hole and forgot that I am no longer a kid.
This is as close to the wild west as you can get as I point out various landmarks from a vista point. Besides beautiful sunsets and scenery not much as really changed since the 1800s. You can also see a massive strip mining operation as dump trucks are carrying away earth from an entire mountainside.

At one time this narrow canyon was full of miners, active mines and structures. Today its very desolate minus the relics of the past which includes a store house, mangled tnt box and other remnants of the past. This truly was the heart of gold country in NV which brought riches to the Comstock Lode in Virginia City.
We came across this mutilated deer skeleton not to far from the store house. At first I did not recognize the skeletal remains till Jarrod found the legs which had the hooves and deer Hyde on them. Were not saying this was paranormal in anyway just trying to show our viewers that their are predators found in the hills surrounding Virginia City Nevada.

As we make our way down the old Virginia & Truckee Railroad tracks we are walking parallel to gold canyon on our left. This truly is a tale about two brothers as we are less then a mile away from reaching Tunnel #9 and Virginia City. Take a walk back in time and try to imagine the railroad passing by all these mines the same route we are traversing.
The wash we are heading down will take us back down into Gold Canyon as dusk is settling in. Strangely as I am filming you can see a beam of light watch careful not to far from the end of this video as it splits into three separate beams. They could be rods which is a paranormal phenomena and the other oddity about them is how they appear to move its obvious they are three dimensional. We did have flashlights on us but we did not turn them on since their still was enough light present to do our last clip.
