Indian Creek Reservoir is truly a unique region that borders the high desert and the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. Many of the hills surrounding the reservoir are considered what is the foothills ranging from 5'600' to 6,400' in elevation gains. When I moved out to this region one of the first places I had ever visited was Indian Creek perhaps because it is so close to my house within minutes I am able to stroll on its shores. Unlike the Carson Range which overshadows towns like Minden and Gardnerville the Indian Creek area is just the beginning of the many jewels that reside up in the mountains you see in our photographs. You have two sorts of ecosystems merging so the area is full of wild and plant life making it a great spot to look for cryptids. Cryptids like Bigfoot and perhaps even the lost legend of the Thunderbirds which may hide anywhere throughout the Toiyabe National Forest which the reservoir is found in.

For nearly 9,000 years this site remains sacred to the Washoe who in the cooler months inhabited the valleys while in the warmer months they would migrate to locations such as what you see here. Their is so much more to the Indian Creek Reservoir then what you see in the pictures on this page. There are also other forces of nature nearby like the mighty Carson River. There is also Curtz, Stevens and Summit Lakes which all surround the reservoir. This first photo below is of Curtz Lake more or less it serves as a pond however thousands of years ago such bodies of water were used by the natives. The air strip which came in the 1900's just resides above the reservoir and I have seen small Cessna's parked on it before.

The region years ago suffered a major forest fire however with allot of luck only one of the meadows burnt down this is very small compared to the rest of the forest which surrounds the reservoir and its sister lakes. In the Spring when the ice melts the reservoir reaches full capacity and by the time fall rolls around it begins to dwindle and shallow out. Thus I felt this would be a great time of year just to go up here and look for any out of the ordinary tracks. Afterall when the water recedes it leaves a very muddy bank and during the fall hundreds of birds migrate here on their journey southward.

As a cryptozoologist when I visit such places I always am looking for new species of wild life. What I can tell you roams here is coyotes, chipmunks, coons, porcupines, black bear, mule deer and squirrels. Their is also a variety of other wildlife here too such as the Rattle Snake, Lizards, Garter Snakes, Golden Eagles, Bald Eagles, Hawks, Jays, Woodpeckers, Black Birds, Ducks, Geese and a wide variety of owls. You have to understand that this reservoir borders the desert and the alpine forest which is why this place is unique. It has a wide variety of wildlife and its all attributed from the two ecosystems that clash.

Joseph Walker and Jedediah Smith who perhaps crossed into this region however their explorations did not gain much attention. In 1844 it really was Kit Carson and John Fremont that put this region on the map. They had crossed Alpine County and the Sierra Nevada's in midwinter! This brought allot of attention to new travel routes one of the most used is the Carson Pass or route 88. Although this reservoir is not on the Carson Pass you have to take it a little ways to get here. In 1848 the Mormon Battalion would not only cross the Sierras but they may have also rested at this location which borders the edge of the Carson Valley. By 1849 you had miners of the Gold Rush making there way both westward and eastward. The early travelers who traveled west made their lives in mining towns like Markleeville and Kongsberg in the mountains. While other miners of the gold rush came down off the sierras to Nevadas enriched valleys to either ranch or mine at places like Virginia City NV and the Comstock Lode.

Some of the early pioneers did not come to this region in search of gold or silver but rather they built up small settlements in Alpine County surrounding Indian Creek Reservoir in hopes of shipping to the Comstock Lode in Virginia City timber. The timber would be used in the mines but also to build local growing cities like Carson City and Reno NV. Some of the wood was used to build processing mills many of which we have investigated and still stand strong even today. By the late 1850's the woodsman were shipping timber down the Carson River which runs fairly close to the reservoir. Once the timber reached towns like Minden or Dayton it could then be hauled up to various mining camps. Today you can see patches of woods that were used for timber surrounding the reservoir. While other parts may have suffered from fires it was apparent that at one time these foothills held great value to the growth of many local towns and mines found in the region.

Today most people come here to fish at the various lakes in the region while others enjoy the eight miles of trails which surround the reservoir itself. If your really daring you can camp here and even wild water raft the Carson River particularly during the Spring is when the area really crowds with so many outdoor enthusiast. However in the colder months you can count on this region being vacated their are no fisherman, campers or even a hiker to be seen. Being that this also resides on the border of the Sierra Triangle their is a bit of strangeness to the area. You will find tracks that absolutely make no sense whatsoever. But overall its a great starter adventure before you take on major summits which overshadow the reservoir itself. If you think being 6'400' is high some mountains in the sierras can reach nearly 14k. So it definitely is a good area for those who are not use to daring mountain climbing and is rather hilly then it is mountainous.

With so much to explore this little area packs a punch as you stare out into the vastness of the Toiyabe National Forest and Alpine County. There is no place like it in the world not to often you find a lake that converges in the middle of two ecosystems. Which makes it a very lush and abundant land for something like Bigfoot to come down to the lake for water then move right back up into the lush Toiyabe National Forest. It would not take much for anything cryptid to enjoy this lake and quickly head right back into the woods climbing up into the high sierras.

This is what I live for is to see it, live it and theorize as much as we can about certain locations we conduct research at. This location is a symbol of peace and serenity. On one end you get pretty views of the Nevada desert while you look further up into the sierras and see peaks that can be seen for miles in every direction. Anything could be back here and you would never know it. But what you would know is that this is a jewel that does not get as much attention as it should. Some of the nature trails were put into place to teach others about the plant life in the region so all of this was put into place to educate others in hopes of preserving it for many more years to come!
