This first time we adventured in the region it was March 2015. We tried to get up to the lake just before sundown. The problem was is that the area was being hit by an early Spring which meant snow melt, mud, washed out roads and slick ice as creeks ran across these old logging roads. I had been on dirt roads for nearly 11 miles one can say we were lost and its very easy to get turned around. These old logging roads were built by Walter Hobarts lumbermen from Hobart Mills. Prior to that it was quite the journey to get back to Independence Lake. The locals always thought that getting lost was your right of passage to see this jewel. By journeying with us you get the feel that we are merely ants in a big open world. I will take our viewers through a mud maze through the Tahoe National Forest in search of one of the most beautiful lakes in all of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Back in the pioneer days many miners of the gold rush and emigrants came here to enjoy the beauty. Not much has changed the forest has regained growth since lumbering and instead of a jeep the pioneers had horse wagons. Imagine taking a wagon on these old wagon roads!	We would return to make a second attempt at locating Independence Lake July 2015 after the big thaw. Their are many dirt roads back in the early 1900's many of the locals felt that getting lost was a right to passage as finding it is a bit difficult due to all the old pioneer and logging roads. It was a brisk July morning we were returning to a maze only this time we would find this jewel of the sierra. Back in the day the locals did not omit how hard it was to find this lake but also felt if you found it that it was a right of passage for those who tried. Walt Disney even admitted that if he were to build a village back here that better roads would have to be built. Some of these roads were used by emigrants who came to the area to build saw mills, mines and ranch. We would travel for many miles down various rugged roads till we reached the preserve. Its a trek worth taking but no less you will work to find this lake if you wish to stand on its shores and see this jewel. Not much has changed back here some of these roads been here 150 years even men like Walt Disney would have to partake in finding this lake back in the day when he had dreams of building his resort back here. Now you have the honor of traversing the same trek through our journeys to Independence Lake as we returned to give it a second go we were on the road to freedom on a brisk 38 degree morning!

Before the lake became a preserve in the 1800s Walter Hobart owned and operated a lumber camp here. Hobart was buying up water rights and sending his right hand man William Tiffany to purchase prime woodlands for lumbering in the region. This led to a resort where many of the lumberers would enjoy with their families on the weekends. This lake contains six very rare cutthroat Lahontan wild trout whom have been here since the last ice age. Lola Montez whom came here has a peak named after her which is the most prominent in the region. Lola Montez went on to become the Belle Of The Californian Gold Rush but also name this lake after the 4th of July. In the mid 1900s Walt Disney wanted to build a ski resort and village on the north end of the lake. Sadly he passed away before his dream would become a reality. Years later this lake became a preserve all 2000 acres to help conserve the rare fish species, wild life and area which still today has been hardly touched by man. When you journey with me you will traverse its beautiful pristine shoreline seeing nature along the way till we picnic at a hidden little cove which serves as the watershed for the little Truckee River. Many scenic peaks, jewels and the beauty of the Tahoe National Forest.	The Azure waters of Independence Lake drew in the first pioneers to the region who came here to fish, lumber and enjoy the resort that once resided on the pristine shoreline we were journeying along. Over the years these shores been home to six very rare Lahontan Cutthroat trout, wolverines, 200 bird species and hundreds of plant species. The preserve is a place of beauty, nature, serenity and in the center of it all are these clear azure waters. The water is so clear you can see down easily over 15' to the bottom. The lake itself resides at about 7k perhaps a little higher therefore its a very relevant body of water. When the snow melts the lake serves as a reservoir for the Truckee Meadows and Northwestern region of Nevada. Unlike other reservoirs the lake does not suffer from drought as a matter in fact these waters are worth more then all the gold in the region. The water is vital to the entire region. Not much has changed in 10 thousand years glaciers carved out the cliffs, mountains and the lake basin. When the ice from the glaciers thawed it filled this lake and since that time its always been a majestic dream for the natives as well as the first pioneers of the gold rush who came here along the Henness Wagon Trail.
