The road on in to Highland lakes almost climbs to about 9000' in elevation. There are times it is very bumpy and other times that it smooths out. Eventually when you near the end of the road you will come up on some old homesteads where beyond that are the lower and upper highland lakes. This is rumored to be one of the most scenic areas as its nestled between two very vast wilderness areas.

At one time many cabins, homesteads and even a ranch surrounded the HIghland Lakes area. Today most of them have been consumed by the elements and time. The area you see in this video is a barn and a newer cabin off in the distance. Notice the peaks are still snow capped and generally they usually stay this way all year around as temperatures here stay cool most of the year.

We are continuing our journey down the road deeper on in a short distance from the lakes. A storm is brewing the clouds are low and moving fast. Little did we know of what was to come as we came closer each minute to lower and upper Highland Lakes.

The drive along HIghland Lakes is scenic continuing this path will take us to the upper lake as well and gateway into the Carson Iceberg Wilderness. With the storm consuming this area this looks like something you would see in a movie. It has all the right elements. This lake sits at almost 9000' it is a hidden jewel nestled deep in the heart of the sierras. It is also noted to be one of the most scenic lakes in this mountain range.

This surprise Hail Storm pummeled us as we journeyed along HIghland Lakes shores. Some of the hail was quarter sized and it really hampered our investigation at the time. In this video I take everyone on up to the upper Highland Lake. This would not be the last time we seen hail on this exploration however we were fortunate to have not been hiking thus we had the shelter of the truck.

The HIghland Lakes Trailhead takes you into the heart of the Carson Iceberg Wilderness. This area generally stays snow-capped most of the year and from the video if you carefully examine the trail you will observe a massive woodsy canyon ahead. You can also see that it went from hail to steady rain and towards the end of the video you can hear the booming sound of thunder. I would after this video check for Bigfoot tracks along the upper lake however the drizzle once again would down pour making things more difficult for our equipment and gear.

These hidden falls can be seen along the HIghland Lakes trail-head which is full of volcanic rock and gems like this series of waterfalls which eventually drains into the Stanislaus River. I had to be very careful as the rocks were slippery and if I were to fall it might be a deadly water-slide ride for hundreds of feet down into the canyon. The trail is lines with beautiful wild flowers and takes you deep up into the Carson Iceberg Wilderness. Sadly we would have to return for another visit with weather permitting here.

I believe that in the future we will make this site our camping spot as it overlooks the lake below. Highland Lakes is known for its series of secluded cozy little camping spots surrounding this lake and its peaks. Despite the coming storm and worsening weather I did off road to this desolate little location in the woods and when I walked up to the treeline it gave off these overlooks of the lake below. We hope in future expeditions we have the opportunity to present such camp sites to our members and our volunteers.

The elements are just not letting up actually it is getting worst. The temperature dropped down to 50 degrees. The hail and rain continued steadily. We would have no choice but to try to make our way out of here through the storm. We never realized that the extent of this terrible weather would pummel us for miles as we made our way out of the sierras.

On our way from HIghland Lakes the only way home is through Ebbetts Pass. Imagine driving through this storm that hit so fast that within minutes snow and ice covered the road. There are no guard rails and the only skill through it is on you. I was fortunate to have brand new all weather tires on my truck so it had no problems with driving this treacherous pass. However there were a few times we did slide a little due to the perfect mix of ice and rain. The highlight of the video is at 1:09!

Storms like these may seem very rare however the weather in the high sierras can be deadly. The moisture collects on the Pacific Coast then those clouds travel eastward where at 7000' they began to cool off thus leaving heavy amounts of precipitation to this area. This video was taken on 911 maybe it was just coincidence or maybe it was a sign from the spirits.

This is a clip taken from our first night camping in the Highland Lakes region of expedition two. We are camped along the tree line between Lower Highland Lake just below Hiram Peak. This is sort of my diary to our upcoming expedition during the filming I was interrupted by a rodent. This night would be the beginning to a series of upcoming adventures.

The trail to get to Hiram Peak is rather overgrown and hidden with foliage. It is a bit offbeat as it serves as a gateway to many other nearby sites such as Disaster Peak. We are setting off for Hiram Peak however the trail would prove a bit misleading as we progressed.

The foothills surrounding Hiram Peak are full of green meadows and wild flowers. Although their are many ways to climb the mighty Hiram Peak we would soon come to find this out as we traversed around lakes. The foothills are full of wild flowers and full of green meadows.

Many ponds surround Hiram although the waters are shallow they are very pristine and blue. Highland Lakes are not the only bodies of water in the region their is also Half Moon and Asa lake nearby. We start our expedition off by using the ponds and lakes soft banks to search for any strange tracks.

Once you make your way up the foothills surrounding Hiram you then must conquer a very steep incline of loose rock to the mountains cliffs. Their are at times points of the climb which are so steep that you have to climb on all fours as if you are a mountain goat. Its definitely a great challenge and exercise as you can see.

All that is left is to make our ascension to the top of Hiram. Unfortunately we climbed the mountain on its back side thus it is a very steep climb. The climb would involve sheer cliffs and rock climbing. As you can see its very steep and without grabbing the right rock one could go right over the cliff we just climbed. Its much easier to climb up then down so we would work on finding an easier means.

In this clip I am holding on to some rocks along the edge of a cliff. I try to show our viewers the dangers of climbing such as loose rocks but also show you what a rock looks like going over the edge. Although no harm to the rock if I were to slide or somehow lose my grip I would tumble much like these rocks.

As we leave the cliffs behind we are still not out of the woods as we still must work our way up this steep rocky embankment. But the views are already amazing and we yet have so far still to go so this is only a small moment of glory for us. This perhaps is the lowest peak on Hiram.

Climbing the backside of Hiram does not allow us to see what obstacles lay ahead. We know that this steep incline will take us up to the top of one of Hirams lower peaks. The fact is what will we have to do next to ascend even higher. Their are cliffs on every side of us even slipping is not an option no room for errors here.

Upon reaching the lower peak we would have to climb down into this saddle. We have drop offs on both sides and once again would meet another challenging ascension. The rocks are very rugged, sharp and steep. In this video you can see where our journey will take us which is up on top of those steep rocks which would include more cliff climbing.

We found our way in a crevice where we could wedge our feet and hands. I know the video is not the best quality I had the camera hanging on my neck as I was climbing. The crevice is nearly 50' then it drops off over a cliff so letting go is not an option. As I was climbing an entire giant rock fell out from under my feet leaving me to hold on with just my hands for dear life.

This is Hiram Peak its not a very large area but tucked away between the rocks where this box contains logs. Many of the logs contain journals of other climbers although it takes a mere half hour to take the faint trail to the top we felt honored to sign the book since we conquered Hiram's sheer cliffs it was a feat. Some of the best views of the region are from this peak words will never describe it!

This ridge is very narrow and if you continue to follow it the gem below is some stellar views of the lower and upper Highland Lakes. If you suffer from acrophobia this definitely is not the ridge for you but if you like heights with great views of the region this is the real deal.

From above on Hiram Peak the waters of Highland Lakes are crystal clear and blue. You have views of the Spicer Reservoir, Disaster Peak, Mount Airola, Folger Peak and so many other great sites. We stopped here to have a bit of lunch I had a brew looking around gives it a feel that you are in a lost world.

This is Gardner Meadows which surrounds upper Highland Lake. These cattle you see are quite common in this area and often seen grazing. Although you cannot see it these are the headwaters for the Mokelumne River and its rather low here. However their is still enough water for the cattle to drink from it.

As some of you are aware the sierras were formed from volcanic activity millions of years ago then the glaciers carved out the canyons. This is nearly a 9k hike I am performing and an old volcanic site so its a bit rugged. But upon reach the top the views of the Bear Meadows below are quite stellar. The sun is setting and the region is so vast I can see for miles in every direction. In the meadow are cattle grazing it is a free range.

It does not look like much but its a massive slide mark. We have to assume something made this you can kind of make out what appears to be a food. I can or cannot say this is Bigfoot but it is at the peak and the loose gravel could have caused something to slide while trying to peer over the ridge looking at the valley below.

In this video you can see that Folger Peak overshadows our campsite off in the distance. Its not a very woodsy mountain although grass and wildflowers do cover most of it. The peak is about 10,400' its a monster in the region and as I am having breakfast on day three of expedition two all I can think of is standing on its peak. We are coming for you!

Although most would think that ascending to the top of a mountain requires little thought in fact it does. We took awhile to plan our trip to the top so that we would not have to expend ourselves like we did on Hiram. We would work our way up along a wash then eventually make our final ascension on a rocky steep trail.

While we were journeying to the top we could see other hikers making their way on top of the ridge. This is a good video because it shows you that were just ants compared to this mountain. The mountains in the sierras are no joke most are steep and people often die on them. So you have to be careful climbing and as they are making it to the top we actually beat them to the peak!

We are standing on Folger Peak here is a 360 degree view which towers over most of the peaks in the region. From this peak you can see Hiram, Spicer Reservoir, Iceberg Wilderness, Highland Lakes and so many other sites. We had lunch at the peak and I stood on some of the cliffs that overlook the backside of Folger Peak. Nothing but a vast world of wilderness no matter which way you point the cam.

Our descent would take us on one of the ridges of Folger Peak all the way back down into the forest below. The descent is lovely filled with flowers, butterflies, bees and beautiful views of the lakes below. I want to say peace to all my fans, friends and viewers. This is truly what it is all about and all of you can feel as if you are there with me!

This is a very primitive location much like a lost world. You have to understand that you are looking at locations that man has not ever walked on in years if at all. Although some areas are well traveled by outdoor adventurers their are places that are left to be explored. Thus this is a lost world waiting to be explored which gives us high hopes that undiscovered cryptids such as Bigfoot await discovery here!

This is an old track I found near the lower Highland Lake. Sure allot of people pass through here but when we put the size into perspective it is a large track so either someone had a size 16 foot or its possible this might be a foot path for Sasquatch. Which if it is that means that whatever made it traverses the lake then heads up into Hiram Meadows and deep into the wilderness.

They call this the Iceberg Wilderness because it stays snow capped nearly all year with the exception of 2012 due to a mild winter. This is a vast region often adventurers like it as it contains many hidden lakes, streams, unique rock formations and peaks that can tower as high as 12k. This section of this wilderness is the Highland Canyon although their are many other primitive canyons. My goal would be to try to get up to Spicer which is about an 8 mile Jaunt with my trusty companion Rascal.

Once you get down into Highland Canyon you tend to get a bit lost as rock formations, dry creek beds and foliage often consumes most of the region. We have made are descent down into the valley at times following Highland Creek which is the main water source flowing through here.

A storm is coming which is not uncommon in this area as the clouds come in from over the Pacific Ocean and San Fransisco. Then they cool down when they reach these tall peaks dropping precipitation. In the winter alone 25' of snow is very likely here. My goal would be to keep heading down the canyon to keep clear of the dark clouds coming on in.

Normally this is Highland Creek but what is left is only a few pools of water and a very wide creek bed of rocks. Although we were hiking on the trail it seemed to end at the dry creek bed thus making our hike through the canyon a bit more challenging. The trails within the canyon are not marked and its easy to lose them. Once you lose it your stuck having to rough it through creek beds, foliage and do some rock climbing.

Although the creek flows mildly their is very little water available in certain sections of it. For example in some of the smaller pools the trout are trapped till the area gets some heavy rains.  This also makes it more difficult for the cattle that roam the canyon in having to find a water source.

The journey is becoming more primitive as Rascal and I cross various creeks and streams. We come across heavy foliage and I even seen a rare fox but its hard to say it was a very large dog like creature. Their are allot of smaller falls, large rocks and other obstacles which make the journey a bit more difficult.

Hiking in the primitive sections of the canyon allowed us to find this massive track. Keep in mind something had to make it and whatever did left an imprint that it was there. Our hard work and research is starting to pay off. The canyon is very wide anything can hide back here and if it does it is going to leave tracks such as this large one.

This section of the Highland Creek is flowing fast and freely unlike earlier sections of the creek. I climb to the edge of a bank where I spot this beautiful waterfall. Its little jewels like this that make me want to continue to push on to see what else I can find or see along my journey into the Iceberg Wilderness.

I found these toe impressions deep in the woods the track would have been much larger but the ground was softer in some spots then others. However if you carefully examine the footage more carefully you can see toe impressions in the softer earth.

Now you see him now you don't! Things took a really bad turn here we were within a mile of the Spicer Reservoir when Rascal seen a herd of cattle. He chased them up Highland Creek then came all the way back around in front of me where I shot this clip. At this point he was gone long gone as I could hear the cattle bells dissipating off in the distance.

It soon would be nightfall I climbed up a hill overlooking Spicer trying to see if Rascal was in the meadow below. Unfortunately I could not see or hear him however I heard the cattle back behind me where I just came from so decided to go look for Rascal then finish heading up to Spicer Reservoir. This was about as close as Id get and my journey back to camp would be a trial.

I found this large track heading downhill along the canyons edge in a heavily forested area. Their were multiple impressions however this track was the only one that revealed that something large came through here of an unknown origin. I was actually not even looking for any tracks just my dog when I found this track coming down off the mountains.
