I have always wanted to visit his home and even the cemetery nearby where his tomb is at. I get it sites like this can be a bit touristy but for me its not always about the ghost its about learning, experiencing some history and exploring. When I arrived in the morning things were quiet honestly hardly anyone was around. I paid to park because you cannot park on the gravel streets. The neighborhood is lined with big trees and lots of shade. The homes are from the 1800's all so nicely preserved its like stepping back in time. The home is beige in color with green shutters from the front it appears to be smaller but it does extend towards the back quite a bit. The museum is next door in fact two homes are open both which contains information and history about the area along with the Lincoln's. It is free to take a tour or explore the home so that is another perk of visiting here. I was able to nearly freely wander around at first though I was with a small group of people. But after I did wander the backyard which had a shed or small barn and walk through the home again. Honestly, this is a pretty amazing little house everything is so well preserved and set up. The parlor has two fireplaces and its so elegant for its time. Lincoln was not a materialistic man he never owned a mansion he just added onto the home. For example in one room you could see his office while another room where his sons slept and played. While the kitchen looked like dinner was about to be served. I was told only some of the artifacts belonged to Lincoln many others were brought in or left behind by the tenants when the home was rented out back in the day. One thing that had gotten me is the old wallpaper which is also very intricate and elegant you wont see it in homes today. Lincoln renovated his home 17 times so everything you see he had a hand in even the décor, add-ons to the home etc etc. I took some EVPs while walking around nothing to much but enough where I could verify if the home had something paranormal in it. Which it does I listened to the recordings their is some things going on like whispers and audio that is not from anyone that was near me at the time so I believe its haunted. The artifacts in the home are pretty amazing such as the old plates, kettles, toys, furniture etc. Like I said you are stepping back into time and how Lincoln would have lived. Life was simpler back then which might just be a good thing or was a great thing. Now were so filled with technology we forget what its like t live. Lincoln had a favorite chair he lived in and in one of the rooms a funeral was held for his son which passed away in the home. I spent sometime also walking around the neighborhood not all of it because I still had to go to the Lincoln Tomb in Oakridge Cemetery next and out to he abandoned asylum two hours north of here. So my time was fairly limited. But many of the homes are restored and have plaques. Many of those plaques talk about Lincoln to like for example a drug store owner that Lincoln was friends with lived a couple homes away or like the kid across the street that probably played with Lincolns Children that kind of history. Some of the homes are more grander then Lincolns home but only two others can you enter into the rest are locked down and meant to be admired as you walk around the gravel roads. In fact their are barrels here and there including the Lincoln Wagon which back then they had no automobiles it was horses they towed you in a carriage. The wagon just sits on the road with a poster of him. I am willing to bet most of the homes on this street or 12 acre area have a ghost story or two. I could spend days going into each house investigating them and most of them id probably get some EVPs or some kind of paranormal evidence. Its the entire area surrounding this home that is historic and most likely haunted to an extent. But all the homes look like they did when Lincoln lived here at one time or were restored to their original forms. Off in the distance you can see the church and even the capitol building where Lincoln was a lawyer and legislator at. He did not have to walk very far to go into work each day. Other times he spent with his family at home with his sons reading them books and studying law. Life was really simple and I think the home gives you a glimpse into what his life was like the ghost are just the perks of it. I had fun walking around the home but also in the area the shady streets, quiet bird life and squirrels etc. Its a real wholesome area then again Springfield is a really nice city. It just has a different feeling here which is why Lincoln probably fell in love with it and decided to move here. Where he was nominated for president in this very home it was basically his campaign base of operations. So really the home was more then a home it was a place of business too for Lincoln including when he ran for president. Just to be a part of this I felt lucky really its not something everyone gets to see or experience but you should. We would eventually move onto Oakridge Cemetery so we could pay our respects and visit the tomb of Abraham Lincoln and explore the history a little further to go with the home not to far away. Lord Rick A little humor for everyone so the guide asked a few of us what we know about Lincoln or what we can tell him about his history. One of the women mentioned Lincolns proclamation while I mentioned his top hat. Everyone reading this knows how much I love wearing top hats so you know where my mind was at given that I am a man of many hats everyone remembers Lincoln also for his hat well at least I do! lol :) |
