When you hear the word Volcano right away you think Mount St. Helens....or something of the sorts. Alot of volcano's in today's time are dormant or no longer active. The unique thing is the Unincorporated community at 2,200 feet is in reality not a volcano at all. The town however is registered as a historical landmark with a population of no more then a couple hundred.

I actually have a couple friends who live their that I met up in Jackson which is about 20 minutes away. Volcano sits up in seclusion down many roads that twist and turn along a creek bed where you can gold pan. Its one of the most scenic places in the sierra foothills I love it here.

The reason the town bared the name is it sits on the edge of a bowl shaped valley which early miners thought it was a volcano. In the mornings fog would rise from the valley which looked like hot steam. The Volcano area was discovered in 1848 by Colonel Stevenson's men who mined a place called Soldiers Gulch in 1849.  Rumor has it that one prospector in a day pulled out 8000 dollars in gold while another one pulled 25 pounds of it. Gold at around this time period was abundant and people made a good living off of mining it.

In 1851 a post office was built and by 1852 over 300 homes went up. In 1853 thousands of men came to the area to mine. Volcano was up to 11 stores, 3 bakeries, 3 saloons and 6 hotels. When in 1855 the hydraulic mining operation began the town was up to 17 hotels, a library, a court house, theater and it was a bustling place in the mountains. It kept growing but eventually when the miners used hydraulic mining with water cannons it destroyed many of these buildings with dirt, sludge, and debris which washed into the structures. The entire town almost was washed away eventually with the exception of a few historical structures that stand such as the old school house which is now a residence. The Masonic Caves served as a saloon, fraternal meeting hall and a market which we had explored.

The gold that was found here during the Civil War was for the Union. Volcano Blues (Loyalist)  smuggled the cannon Old Abe to quell rebel sympathizers which was cast by Cyrus Alger & Co. up in Boston in 1837. It was the first of two 6 pounders made on the same day to be stamped with a serial number 4 from what I read. The other cannon can be seen at Shiloh Battlefield and they call it Shiloh Sam. Abe is the only cannon of that age in our country still on the 19th and on a century wooden carriage. The cannon has a pretty extensive history.  Abe never seen use but it served as a symbol to ward off the south just in case they tried to steal the gold in Volcano.

But Volcano also gave birth to some legends in history such as Harry Liveredge a two time track star in the year 1920 and 1924 Olympics. Also Brigadier General known as the leader of the regiment figured in the historic Iwo Jima flag raising dying in 1951 after 25 years of serving the Marine Corps. The Iwo Jima was a marine unit that first riased the American Flag on Mount Suribachi during a World War II bloody battle against the Japanese on that small island.

Volcano really was one of the first places in California I did an exploration at therefore it holds a special place in my heart. Is it haunted yes others have told me some stories of activity within it. When the gold rush ended not much remained today their is a cemetery on a hill, a park, a historic hotel, theater, and a few small shops. Our explorations we did in California as brief as they may be will lead to future visits for some great paranormal  investigations.

The town symbolizes the gold rush....and how one of many small towns became part of gold country. I chose the right area to base our organization at to bad it did not work out for me during my stay and with that in mind will be returning to California once again to revisit this location.

Even though most of you have not heard of this community the town boast alot of history and first. For example the first theater group in California began here. First debating society in California.  In 1855 it had the first private school in California, First private law school in Ca, First Legal hanging in Amador County took place here, The first Astronomical observatory in California in 1860 was built here by a George Madeira who discovered the Great Comet of 1861 here. The first Solar Still in California was established here in 1978.

Volcano is also home to the Black Chasm Caverns which is a series of caverns with beautiful formations within. I did visit the site did not go into the cave just took a drive on some of the steep grades with of course the Subaru. Not only is Volcano well renowned for its history but they have some of the best train wreck marijuana in the country trust me on this:) its a retreat a place that sits nestled in seclusion. One could see butterflies gracing the fields.....beautiful rock formations in the park which look volcanic some of them are black in color yet they say the area is NOT a Volcano very odd.

The Theater has 35 seats and is made of Cobblestone and nearby is a large outdoor Volcano Amphitheater.  This may be one of my favorite places in the world really. I almost got a house up here but sadly it was taken from me when houses come up in this area or the very few they have they go within a day.

While out hiking my sons and I found two mines within Volcano at the time we thought they were caves till I visited the Messa Brothers mine and noticed a similar tunnel with chiseled rocks.  These mines are a symbol of the past. To be able to bring Volcano to our site really is beautiful  just the excitement of taking my sons here to play football in the park while looking at a haunted gold rush town. The roads around Volcano are deadly steep drop offs but very scenic. Will we visit again? Yes its a place Ill work with more in the future including the old historic cemetery on the hill. The cemetery is one of two which has many of the miners children and wives buried there.
