Much like our universe the underworld beneath our feet is a huge unknown and we have only touched the tip of the iceberg in regards to cave systems. I remember when I was a kid my father took me to this Indian cave and since then I was hooked. While I have journeyed in many caves some less known then others so far in my journeys every one of them was unique. Every cave or cavern has its own heartbeat  or lifeline just awaiting new discoveries. The American West has hundreds of miles of lava tubes, underground rivers, cave systems and caverns waiting to be discovered. Some forbidden history theorist believe that some ancient races live in what is known as the Hollow Earth. In Hopi legend they have told stories of going underground and emerging after various cataclysms somewhere in the Grand Canyon. While I believe this is possible even plausible since many other native American tribes share similar stories I also believe such cave systems could be home to a much more plausible creature in theory known as Bigfoot aka Sasquatch especially when someone tipped me off about a family of Bigfoot like creatures sighted not far from Black Chasm which means they may be utilizing such cave system to remain elusive. While this creature also has many other names it may explain why sightings are rare and this creature disappears because perhaps it has learned to utilize such cave systems or other entrances we as humans are not aware of. Which brought me to two different cases I did research at one known as Big Bend above Kinzua Pennsylvania and the other is the Cave Of The Red Haired Giants near Lovelock Nevada both of which I did extensive research at and found startling some startling resemblances between them all. Over the years their have been rumors of even ancient cities found in unknown cave systems which may have been lost over time due to entrances being collapsed or covered up because this kind of thing would rewrite history as we know.

While you may not hear about the paranormal or monsters living within the Black Chasm it does have some very unique facts which separate it from any other cave system in the world. Every cave kind of takes on a life of its own whether that is its size, depth and the type of life forms that may dwell in such a place. Many years ago when the Kinzua Dam was being built during the quarry excavation a large cave system had been found then the government showed up with massive rigs maybe the Smithsonian where locals hurting shooting and massive noise as if a massacre were occurring. From that cave system massive stone tables and chairs were removed which may have belonged to a race of giants. The lid was kept tight about the cave system and eventually the government sealed it up with cinder blocks. Just a short time later someone took a sledge hammer to the sealed cave entrance and eventually a couple went in never to be seen again. When then first men to have ever laid eyes on this chasm descended into the darkness via rope you can only imgine how fast their hearts raced. The thought of entering an unknown cave system can be an adrenaline rush but also it might mean your demise. Black Chasm is full of deep crevices, lakes and various caverns that connect to one another. While only eighteen rooms and caverns been discovered within Black Chasm some geologist feel their could be hundreds of chambers. Due to environmental laws the exploration of this cave system is very slow and its been years since scientist have ventured beyond what already has been charted. The largest chamber within Black Chasm that they know about is supposedly a 100' across and over 150' deep. So this is a massive cave system and not all of it can be explored without have proper equipment which is why such cave systems go for years uncharted and unexplored. Some cave entrances go much deeper then we ever thought like with
Grimes Point Nevada but the entrances collapsed and now their simply is no way to get into them for more in depth analysis and exploration.

While nothing out of the ordinary has been discovered in Black Chasm it has more helictite formations nearly more then any other cave system in the world. The chasm has thousands if not millions of these formations found through the walls and ceilings. Some of you may be familiar with stalactites and stalagmites the Helictites found here defy gravity as they curl, twist and turn in every direction. Nearly all the known caves on earth possess about 5% of these helictite crystals actually only five cave systems with perhaps a few but supposedly from what I was told is the chasm has millions and nobody is really sure why that is.  So far five lakes have been discovered inside of Black Chasm one of the lakes is 80' deep and a 100' cross which you could raft on even swim in as the water is portable and pure due to the rain seeping through the ground above. The lakes are home to amphipods or rather cave shrimp they are translucent meaning no pigment and like any life form that resides deep underground these living orgasms do not rely on sight. Also within the cavern algae and cave mold grow which could be a food source for some of the life that dwells underground. Black Chasm is also home to an arachnid spider named Banksula Grubbsi which is translucent, has a multi-segmented body and is about the size of a rice particle. This spider has no hearing or eyesight due to having detached retinas as a matter in fact its the only vegetarian spider found in the world. This spider has never been seen in any other cave which means that living orgasms found here are very rare and also not like other biological life found in other cave systems. While many bats are sighted around the cave system none have ever colonized in the Chasm and nobody is sure why since they are often seen feeding on insects surrounding the chasms entrance. In reality Black Chasm is a bit of an oddity but it also is a cavern like no other in the world which is why for me it was a must to make the journey here.

Black Chasm Cavern is a dissolution cave formed by sulfuric acid which results from geo-thermala hydrogen sulfide reacting with the down moving oxygenated surface water. What then happens is limestone bedrock begins to erode forming chambers over thousands of years. At one time this cave would have been underwater there is even small fossils which have been found embedded in the walls of the caverns proving this theory. The cave is considered to be part of the Calaveras Volcano Complex which means that the cave may have started off as a lava tube then the limestone around them begin to erode over time caused by rainwater seeping through the surface. The cave is considered metamorphic meaning that the crystal structures of the rock have continuously changed over a long period of times which eventually forming the marble you see and in this case the chasm is full of this beautiful blue marble which almost led to the chasms demise many years ago because of its value. The Calcite formations you see forming in Black Chasm are a derivataive of the blue marble bedrock found here which contains mainly calcium or what is known as Calcium Carbonate. This has led to the variety of formations you will see in our photos and while exploring the chasms inner sanctum which is around 150' below the surface and that is not even the deepest cavern found within. The formations found here are rather amazing their is no t one part of the caverns found here that do not contain stalactites,  columns,  ribbons, angels wings, helictites, false floors, draperies, flow stone, cave bacon, soda straws which are hollow mineral formations that you could technically drink from. Of course since they take thousands of years to form we would not want to touch any formations because our hands and skin carries oils which can hurt the ecosystem within. It has taken two million years for Black Chasm to form and thousands of years of rain water dripping to form the calcite crystals you see throughout the chasm.
Cave speleothems are generally formed by dripping or splashing water, but helictites are formed through hydrostatic pressure. Basically, water is pushed through porous walls leaving crystallized minerals on the other side. As the mineral deposits build up they tend to stack horizontally resulting in the incredible spun glass effect that can be seen in the Landmark Room. In this addition on our website your going to see photos taken in three of the chambers but bare in mind their are eighteen and quite possible a hundred more just waiting to be charted.

More then likely it was the Miwok tribe that probably knew about the chasm before the first miners of the gold rush found it. The first documented exploration occurred in 1854 when a group of explorers descended down via rope into the chasm. They would go on to discovered the beauty within the cave including a bright blue lake and millions of sparkling crystals that flickered in the candlelight. I am almost sure the explorers had never seen soda straws and helictites so they probably were amazed by their discovery. The explorers were miners searching for gold describing the cave as having vaulted chambers large enough to sustain the growth of a large tree inside, crystals that stood out fromt he walls in every direction, turning and bending into many shapes. While the miners did not find gold they spent sometime lowering down on ropes in search of anything of value and when they did not find they gold they preserved the chasm to a certain extend. I was told that originally when they used dynamite to enlarge the entrance it had damaged some of the columns and stalactites.  The miners had no use at the time for blue marble and while its possible they were responsible for some of the damage done to the formations near the chasms entrance I have read that in the 1860's tours were given of the cave which were eventually abandoned. I also read that it was in the 1860's that the caves entrance was enlarged to the 18' crack you see today  in order to accommodate a set of stairs for the tours. Whether it was the miners dynamite blasting the entrance for gold was the culprit or the enlargement for a set of stairs to be built its likely that any of the damage found to the cave was caused by human factor no matter what the circumstances are.

While humans may have ventured deep into these caverns they barely were aware of its size! Most early explorers descended down to the lake which is about 156' below the surface and today you can stand on a catwalk which looks straight 100' down. Can you imagine migrating to the US from overseas and one of the first things you find while out looking for gold is lost world like this? I was shown some historic graffiti deep inside the cave and was told that the stairs did not reach where it was found at. Which means that people been possibly exploring this cave privately for decades during the turn of the century and rather then document it they probably just left their initials deep inside. Then again you see quite a few things within Black Chasm within the formations such as a goblin, witch, candy canes, reindeer, butterflies and even a dragon which supposedly is the caves mascot. The human brain is trained to see various patterns as it sends signals to your visual cortex. I am sure those that first ventured into the cave thought they seen quite a few strange things that turned out rather to be just basic geology. After the miners found no use for the blue marble and the tours ceased the chasm had been forgotten unless you were local or lived down the road from the town of Volcano California which is within walking distance away.

While the Chasm had been forgotten some miners and locals made use of such caves such as the Volcano Masonic Caves which was used as a saloon, market, restaurant and even a Masonic hall just a mile if not less away. Its hard to know if both caves connected to one another but locally their are quite a few caves in the area and they believe that Black Chasm Caverns has more then once entrance as the cave continues to travel deep underground. Where other entrances are nobody knows since the sierra foothills are full of jungle like forest, cliffs and remote areas your guess is as good as mine. The giant 18' entrance is the only way down into this cave system which is why its so fascinating as far as the park service is aware of at this time and if it is the only entrance then each time a speleologist explores this place they are going to be laying their eyes on many new discoveries since very few humans have seen every chamber within Black Chasm. There could be caverns at the bottom of some of these underground lakes nobody knows because nobody has dared to spelunk further past the caves eighteen chambers. Most chambers are inaccessible or closed off to the public in the near future they want to open up this cavern which does not have a stairwell right now to get into a chamber known as Dragon's Lair. Most of the caves chambers were discovered in 2000 but since then very little exploration has continued and I am not sure considering how amazing Black Chasm truly is it should be another world wonder.

In the 1950's their was a huge interest in cave exploration one of those early expeditions is credited with the discovery of prolific helictites found in the Landmark Room in 1954. In 1962 a scuba diver entered Lake Reflection one of the five lakes discovered in the chasm at least that they know about. At the time the lake sat at about 65' in depth before he hit rock bottom. Since the diver did the dive during the summer the lake is a little lower but generally it resides in the cooler months at about 80' in depth. In 2001 a diver was sent to dive the lake and the depth was at or around 80 feet so it does fluctuate. The employees sometimes get the opportunity to repel down to the cavern where reflection lake is found to change the light bulbs so that tourist can stand on the cat walk and see the lake straight below through a dark abyss. I am not sure about the chasms other lake depths but their are caverns, lakes and tunnels everywhere in the chasm. Scientist do not deny that there are more chambers and lakes getting access into them is another story. The chasm is every spelunkers dream come true but what is even more fascinating is what else remains to be seen.

The Chasm Cavern had a variety of various owners one of them including Owens Illinois Cement Company, American Cement Company and currently the Sierra Nevada Recreational Corporation.  When the National Park Service explored the caves and saw the Helictite Crystals in the Landmark Room the chasm came under consideration for a National Natural Landmark or NNL in 1975. They said that the helictites are the best in the west. Lucky the park service did some research within the chasm because at the time it was about to be quarried and turned into an open pit mine for its blue marble and gravel that the bedrock would provide. The quarry company at the time who owned the land knew of the cave or at least that it existed but were not aware how rare the helictites were. Even though their was an NNL status placed on the chasm in January of 1976 the quarry company still owned the legal rights to the land and cave on that land below it. But the park service put quite a bit of pressure to preserve the cave during its NNL status and the quarry company ended up separating the cavern property from the remainder of the quarry nearby which is still operable today. By 1986 Black Chasm was designated as a National Natural Landmark which virtually protected the cave system by the National Park Service.

I was told that the companies owner still today gets a cut from the caves profits since technically it was located on there land but this cave almost was destroyed along with this two million years of history while the owner was not happy about profiting from quarrying the cave he does respect the governments decision to protect this site. Later the SNRC bought the cave and its grounds so they could conduct tours here which they have done a fine job preserving Black Chasm as its virtually untouched and has been for thousands of years. This story reminded me of Big Bend In Kinzua Pennsylvania as in order to build the dam the workman ended up quarrying into a cave system which runs all under NW Pennsylvania in the Appalachian Mountains and Allegheny National Forest. While an open pit mine would have destroyed this portion of Black Chasm its possible that it would have also revealed more caverns that still have yet to be discovered today! I wonder what would have happened if Black Chasm was quarried would they have found remnants of some lost city? ancient tribe? giants among us? or ancient artifacts?

It would take over a century for the Federal Government to realize the value in the abundance of the unusual and rare geological formations found through the caverns known s Helictites that are found everywhere within. In the later 1990's some steps and walkways were built to keep the cave environmentally friendly so that guest can explore the cavern using platforms that way none of the formations get damaged. Every six months the guides at Black Chasm have to repel to the bottom of cavern where Reflection Lake is located because people lose cell phones, jewelry and other items. The platforms allow you to get up close and person to the caverns various formations and when I say close you can look at Helictites within inches of your eyes so its not like your standing in some big cavern and cant study the cave system. But since it takes thousands of years for many of the formations to evolve everything here is fragile and could never be replaced in our lifetime. In half of million years from now its hard to even know if man will still exist the cave may once again remain forgotten and lost to time. But since 1998 the chasm has been opened to the public much like it was in the 1860's.

If you hike around the cave entrance there is a Zen Garden located on the property which is full of rocks, nature, trails and lush trees definitely worth checking on out. During the Gold Rush some miners resorted to Hydraulic Mining in and around Volcano California. The direct result of this was millions of tons of top soil that were being washed way into Sutters Creek as a matter in fact the soil would reach eventually the Sacramento Valley. During Hydraulic Mining an area of convoluted marble monoliths were uncovered here. Eventually Hydraulic Mining would go on to be banned due to the effect it had on the environment and in turn you were left with entire hillsides, rock faces and entire mountains washed away exposing the rock underneath. Today the Zen garden is full of wild flowers and rocky monoliths which serve as the caverns ceiling within. When you see so much rock its a general clue that a cave entrance is nearby whether that is just a small hole in the ground or chasm you climb down into the truth of the matter is anywhere you often find limestone you find cave systems.

Back in 1996 the SNRC purchased the cavern and were offering five hour expedition trips that included rafting, climbing, rappelling and crawling through the more primitive sections of the cave. The trips ran for about four summers until some of the more delicate sections of the cave were deemed to steep a price to continue to offer these tours. In 1999 a road, septic and utilities were all installed along with a building storage facility. The more elaborate stairs and cat walks were not built till July of 2000 with the first walking tours being offered on the last weekend in September of 2000. It took about ten months to complete the project as crews had to be harnessed and use cables for the construction project. The real grand opening for the caves walking tours did not transpire till April of 2001. The visitors center which also serves as a museum would not be built until December of 2003 and is 3,000 square feet. That same year an updated survey and exploration took place at Reflection Lake and various caverns. They used tape measures, compasses as well as a laser measuring device to survey the first half mile in doing so they discovered an addition half mile of caverns which doubled the known length of the cave. The total length of Black Chasm underground is 3,136' and overall depth including the lake is 225 feet with 146 feet above lake level. However, it was also duly noted that the chasm could continue on beyond that in length or even depth.

The problem is sometimes adventurers like myself venture into unknown caves and most of the time the spelunkers who are never seen again end up crawling or squeezing into a cavern they cant get out of so then they end up falling to there deaths or sliding down a rocky face that is to slippery to get back up therefore they die of starvation which is usually after they run out of light so cave exploring does have its fair share of dangerous.  From 2011 - 2015 Black Chasm offered its visitors a 2.5 hour expedition journey called the Labyrinth Tour. This tour explored the surface features of the convoluted rock exposed by the hydraulic mining process used during the gold rush. The guest were able to crawl, slither, slide, climb, roll and rappel during this tour. While Black Chasm is no longer officering middle earth expeditions they currently own in the Mother Lode of the Sierra Foots are Moaning Cave, Mercer Caverns, California Caverns and of course Black Chasm. While other caves like the Crystal Cave in Sequoia National Park and Boyden Cave in kings Canyon are not owned by the Sierra Nevada Recreation Corporation. One of the oldest sets of human remains was discovered in Moaning Caverns dating back to about 12,000 years in age and were found buried in speleothem mineral deposits along with many other human remains. The cave is about 410 feet in depth and during prehistoric times some had fallen into the cavern succumbing to death. The main room in Moaning Cavern in fact is so large you can fit the Statue Of Liberty inside of it! Then we have Mercer Caverns which traverse over 3k in length and nearly two hundred feet in depth which a gold miner discovered. In most cases caves like Black Chasm were discovered during the gold rush because miners scoured rocky outcroppings. The California Cave in Cave City is also part of the Calaveras Complex is also owned by The Sierra Nevada Recreation Corporation and is a massive limestone systems so big that back at the turn of the century they called it Mammoth Cave which today crosses path with another cave system known as the cave of quills and it even has a 200' deep lake adventurers raft on. The Mammoth Cave aka Californian Cavern is said to go as deep as 700 miles under California.

While their may be quite a few beautiful cave systems located in Calaveras County many of them are not been explored thoroughly such s with Black Chasm. Most of these caves descend down into an abyss and appear to have a series of connected chambers some which require you to crawl through small holes which can lead you deeper into these cave systems. Unfortunately due to state regulations and environmental laws its becoming very difficult to map such cave systems without the proper permits. Black Chasms Helictites are so fragile that exploration is very slow going and most of the caves the SNRC owns right now go somewhat unexplored even though some of the tours offer you a middle earth expedition I believe much more remains to be seen. There are over 45000 caves in the United States alone but some of the finest caverns your going to come across are in Calaveras which is also home to The Calaveras Big Tree Forest. While we may have much to learn about the universe we have barely begin to understand the world below us. Most of these cave systems go under towns, houses, cities and our roads but you would never even know it. My goal is to visit all the cave systems that SNRC operates honestly I wish that I could spend my days exploring such cave systems out of curiosity. Who knows what we might find a hundred miles in one of these cave systems maybe an underground city, race of bigfoot like creatures, cave paintings, artifacts, skeletal remains that the natives buried in them or other geological wonders. Mitchell Caverns under the Mojave desert supposedly is the entrance to the hollow earth and when something late at night was banging on this big iron door I was convinced the stories of beings that dwell deep underground may hold some truth since this locked door supposedly is one of the deepest cave systems in the world.

I was told that Black Chasm is by far one of the best caverns in the sierras and this could be because of the helictites. But we plan on visiting every cavern we can get access to in the future especially since their are other beautiful caverns within an hour from Black Chasm. Geologist often refer to this tract of crust in the western Sierra Nevada Metamorphic Belt the Calaveras Complex or Dome rather. The limestone in this region was heated up and was transformed into marble which is why their are so many quarries such as the Vallecito Quarry which we urban explored a few years back before I visited the Chasm. Honestly, the first time I learned about Black Chasm is when I camped near it at an ancient Indian village site which today is known as Indian Grinding Rock.  This ancient site was home to the Miwoks who ground berries, acorns and nuts for hundreds of years in the soft rocky outcroppings found nearby. They would have known about Black Chasm the problem was as soon as you climbed on into the cave or lowered yourself down on a rope you were sitting on a 100' cliff at the top of the chasm looking down into a dark abyss which we know now that below is Reflection Lake. Imagine how intense it had to be if you were a miner hanging on this rope above the chasm holding a torch. Most of these caves received very little attention because back in the day the only thing people thought about was what kind of gold or silver they could pull up. It turned out however that the limestone cave systems lacked any monetary value and rather the real money was in tourism so some miners ended up instead preserving these locations so that we could enjoy them today.

I am fascinated with caves especially out west because we know so very little about them but also most of them remain unexplored. Over the years of living here out west I hear stories of hidden caves under the Los Angeles, Black Rock Desert, Death Valley and even Lassen Volcanic National Park. While the surface of our planet has evolved so has beneath the surface. Even though many of these caverns like Black Chasm has been explored very few ventured beyond what has already been mapped even though scientist and cave experts are aware that these cavern systems do continue to go on some for many miles. In some sense the relationship between the surface of our planet is symbiotic of the underground. For example rain seeps into the earth forming Black Chasms Stalactites, Stalagmites, Helictites etc. Just as Sasquatch probably utilizes many of these caverns because most cave systems have more then one entryway. Some caves are so well hidden by foliage, holes in the ground, chasms, crevices and hard to get to locations that we as humans have yet to find them. Black Chasm is also said to connect with another cave system at least in theory based on the study that was done in 2000 here. The chasm I believe holds many more surprises. I read a story about a man who once journeyed below the Mojave Desert who claimed to have stood in a giant cavern with a massive river 1 mile across. Giant rivers do flow underground and they generally pour out into the ocean. Its hard to know what kind of life even intelligent life forms exist in the subterranea but it sure is fun to theorize. While such caves do not form over night it has taken mother nature millions of years to form then so that adventurers like myself can enjoy them today!
