At
one time the Shoe String theatre was a school house in 1917 for the local
black community of Lake Helen. Anotherwards its the ghetto of Lake Helen.
But its also a historical area and this school is a remnant of that.
The
Theatre itself was organized in 1949 in a Navy Mess hall at the
Sidney Taylor Airport in Deland another place we investigated. The group
moved to this structure in 1987 where the school was remodeled and 150
seats were added.
All
the productions here were produced and acted by local talented actors and
actresses which were family orientated. Rumors of the dressing room being
haunted by a little black girl who is very curious probably a student.
There have also been reports of ghostly voices, objects moving, doors
closing on there own.
I
can tell you right now there is some kind of presence at this theatre. Its
a really gloomy place at night and its age shows. You can also tell that
it was a school at one time cause of the huge parking lot, giant field,
and architecture. One can sit back and imagine what a school day looked
like at one time here.
The
Theatre has boarded windows and you will see things like a grill out back,
a pile of rubble, storage lockers, an old chair, a bench on the porch etc
but the darker side of the theatre which has no lights you can feel
children spirits just watching you from the shrubs.
