The road on into Dixie Valley is a long one at one time many ranches surrounded this very road that takes you on into town. Well at one time it was a town that transitioned from borax mining to ranching due to the valleys abundant springs in the 1800's. Eventually this valley became desolate as in the 1960's everything was abandoned only for the Navy to purchase it for training purposes. I will take you on a journey between the Stillwater and Clan Alpine Mountain Ranges through this beautiful high desert valley. Then eventually will turn off take the road less traveled to a beautiful oasis below the range. Some journeys are worth taking I had no idea where any of the roads led here but what I knew is that if I took them I would not short myself of beautiful views, nature or even the strange. The road is about twenty miles if not more so you can imagine that isolation may have been one of the main reasons the town was abandoned. This valley has miles of dirt roads that lead to scattered remnants of the town and other hidden jewels.

Willow Springs is a prime example of an lush oasis in the middle of a very rugged high desert. Their are many natural springs which keep parts of the valley very lush and flourishing with wildlife. An example of this would be my encounter with Pistol Pete you will have to figure out the rest as to why we call him that. When I arrived at Willow Springs we not only admired the beautiful views of Dixie Valley but the nice shade of a very large tree while we put a blanket down and had a family picnic. One can see why so many of the ranchers came to this area as wherever such springs sprang up so did cotton woods and pure water for drinking or even grazing livestock. Willow Springs is merely only one site of many that are vital to the wildlife in the region and prior to that the first pioneers that came here. Join me as I take you through sage brush, show of stellar views of the Alpine Clan Mountains and introduce you to my new friend who appears to like me a little to much.

My first explorable remnants of the town of Dixie Valley were that of the Knittle Ranch or at least what remains of it. You have to drive down this very narrow road at times the branches of the trees and foliage touch the sides of your vehicle almost. The ranches homestead is now surrounded by marshland caused by natural springs which bubble up to the earth. The ranch land in the valley was rich enough to grow alfalfa and raise livestock. Such ranches such as this may have provided beef or even crops to the miners from other local nearby towns that are ghost towns of today such as La Plata, Wonder City, Hercules, Victor, Stillwater and Mountain Well. This is one of the largest remaining remnants of Dixie Valleys past with a homestead, wood cabin, workshop and other remnants that are flooded. This ranch is an example of early ranching history that came to the region and what life may have been like at one time.

This segment in our series is exploring some of the historic ranch remnants left behind from the days of Dixie when this was an active town. The town did not have any retail businesses but it had a school that I know maybe even a saloon as well as a post office. Everyone here had to be self sufficient so you will see barns, coops, foundations of homesteads, corrals and remnants of the past. Most the town was destroyed during Naval Training exercises when they acquired the property in the 1980's. Not allot remains once a practice bomb is dropped on an old wood ranch from the 1800's. Nature once again has reclaimed the land in this valley so you do have to search for the towns remnants. Life is harsh on the range as you can tell from the skeletal remains of wild mustangs and cattle that met their doom here. The entire valley floor is one giant graveyard! Mining began in Dixie Valley in 1861 by the turn of the century their was over fifty ranches that were built under this valleys cottonwoods. More then likely isolation, earthquakes and economical hardships led to it being completely vacated.

Do you believe that inanimate objects can come to life or that sometimes we come across things that we may not be able to explain. I was with my sons we were searching for remnants the US Navy left behind upon passing by a group of armored vehicles where we seen something moving around out behind them. We pulled further up the road I wanted to get out have a closer look after I seen something come around the back side of an armored vehicle and thought maybe a person was out here trampling around. So I drove past the armored vehicles begin filming again I wanted to know what it is we seen moving around and all we could see is a scarecrow hung up on a barbed wire fence some real jeepers creepers type of stuff or rather weird. I did not feel at first thought it was a US Naval Soldier in training afterall this is the training area for the NAVY for the local base up in Fallon. I decided to drive off my family was spooked because this thing at the time before I changed batteries was crawling on the ground and watching us. I had to know so I get on out of the vehicle to check it out up close and personal. What did we seen a ghosts? living scarecrow? We may never know but the experience was all to real therefore here are the photos, audio clip taken right from the investigation and some clips of the site as I research the incident further. I wanted to keep all of this as real as possible so I kept it all as is emotions and that sort of thing. Dixie Valley is a weird place so also is a gallery of some of the oddities I experienced there please view the galleries at a mediocre size and the music!

Dusk was upon us and I wanted to finish up the evening seeing a few more ranch sites. Ill take you on a few back country roads in Dixie Valley to some gurgling springs, homestead site, ranch and even an awesome Naval armored vehicle. You will also see storm clouds coming in from off the Stillwater Mountains its not uncommon for it to rain here especially this time of year. The valley is one giant alkali flat with salt marshes, springs, seasonal creeks that flow in off the mountains and storms tend to develop over the Stillwater to give this area the much needed water it needed for the ranches found here. We would head for home at dusk you can see Fairview Peak off in the distance its an extinct volcano which played a part in the 1954 earthquake that was one of the largest in the state of Nevada. We had much to discuss about our day such as trying to find the cemetery which we tried do do before nightfall and about the strange things experienced here. Our first expedition in Dixie Valley for us revealed UFOs, Ghostly Ranchers, Mutilations and even a Living Scarecrow. We also passed a guy who earlier passed me then was pulling out a gun as I had driven by. This area is a wild frontier people hunt at this oasis's often found in the valleys and in the mountains which overshadow this beautiful land. We would return to explore more what other secrets are hidden in this isolated valley?

The road ahead would be a very long one as we just crossed the top of the Stillwater Mountains and were descending upon Dixie Valley from this ghost town known as La Plata. We decided to break just above the mouth to this giant canyon for lunch where we found all sorts of gemstones and minerals. We were in for a treat this was a second expedition to a place that we really experienced the paranormal our first expedition a few months prior so we were excited to see more. Watch as we descend down to the valley floor passing through herds of cattle and even a Naval Communications station. Our main goal on our second trip was to explore a couple ranches, visit the pioneer cemetery and experience more what the valley has to offer. This was a scenic offbeat road into Dixie Valley along an old wagon route that connected to three other ghost towns in the area. What would we find on our second journey answers to the truth or more mystery?

Some folks refer to this as Fairview Cemetery and you can clearly see Fairview Peak is off in the distance which is a giant extinct volcano. Back in 1954 a fault line fractured in Dixie Valley which ran all the way to this massive peak and was responsible for one of the Nevada's largest earthquakes. The cemetery may look barren as many of the graves here are simply either not marked or over the years fell victim to vandals perhaps even the elements. Most of the people buried here were miners or ranchers who came to this valley seeking out its precious commodities such as spring water, borax and fertile land. These ranchers lived in isolation life was rugged as supplies was limited, storms were vicious, epidemics broke out and worked very hard to make lives for themselves here. The ranchers that built there town and homesteads did so with there very own hands. Some came to this scenic valley to live out their entire lives only to become permanently one of the dearly departed at Ranchers Rest. You will see a couple graves a giant desert hare and some really nice scenic backdrops of the Stillwater and Alpine Clan Range in the winter months covered in snow.

A journey that will take you across Dixie Valley to some old settlements and homesteads its very picturesque with our final stop in this clip at a place I called The Settlement Ranch. The first time I visited this ranch their was people living on it actually it looked quite active. During this second visit I was astounded to find that the ranch had been abandoned and was very deplorable. I am not sure if what I seen my first journey was a ghost ranch or squatters but this time around this place was there for the taking so I went in. This was quite a ranch back in the day the stone homestead and cold storage pantry are original along with the chicken coop out back. A storm was coming on in over the Stillwater Mountains so it just added to the creepiness in exploring this place. Their was a workshop which smelled of human decomposition so its hard to say who or what has been here. Their are allot of old relics at the ranch but its in very bad shape but one of the valleys oldest standing ranches that survived Naval Training exercises. At the end of the video is a gallery of the ranch with some eerie music dark ambient music.

The last leg of our second expedition would including taking some of the back roads in Dixie Valley. You can see also a storm brewing over the Stillwater Range. These roads at one time were the towns streets which led to ranches and various homesteads. Will take you to down narrow dirt roads surrounded by large cotton wood trees and to a few homestead sites. Their is also an armored vehicle the Navy left behind definitely worth a second visit because its simply a military marvel. A nice way to finish up our second adventure out here with great views of the Stillwater and Clan Alpine Mountains covered in snow. Eventually after a hard days of offroading and exploring we would journey south towards the extinct volcano of Fairview Peak where just below Middlegate Station awaited us with hot food and cold brews. We would leave the valley near sunset wondering what other secrets may be hidden here our journey was complete with an exploration of the Settlement Ranch and Ranchers Rest Cemetery where thoughts of a third journey are in the works.
