Crater Lake resides at about 8000' in the high sierras. Naturally across the world there are many crater lakes formed from volcanoes and asteroid impacts that eventually fill with water forming such lakes. This crater lake was home to various mining operations which include the Alhambra and the Alpine Tungsten Mines. Today allot of the old mining equipment still resides along the hillside. Since we have not explored the entire area our second trip will focus on those mines.

The Crater Lake area is also in an avalanche zone and even through summer there are signs that point to this factor. The peaks surrounding this location are prestigious in size some of them have waterfalls raining off there cliffs as if this is some kind of lost world. That is at least the impression that I had when I hiked around the lake and the old mining roads that were created over 50 years ago.

The area was first mined in the early 1930's then again in the 1950's for its gold. The two mines known as the Alhambra and Tungsten Mines were at one time adjoined. Today most of these mines are inaccessible like most of the mines we have encountered in the sierras. Nonetheless they are a wonderful part of mining history so I enjoy visiting such sites.

The lake was used to furnish water used to run a compressor and for a drill. The amount of water flowing from the lake from the creek could be used in milling and to provide electric power for the operation of the mines. So if your asking why mines were erected here the primary reason would be due to the existence of Crater Lake so both of them go hand in hand.

Near the mine there was also a camp which had two small buildings where the prospectors could rest at. There was also another mining road that was built that led to Minden a nearby town that resides in Carson Valley with great historical significance. Eventually however the mines would die despite the area was full of timber the shortage of water would eventually occur. Once that occurred there was no longer electric power to run the drill or even light the inside of the mines thus for over 50 years now they have remained abandoned just a half of mile away from this very lake.

As far as the paranormal goes my theory is there are many Bigfoot that roam the high sierras. I think they are found in various locations that provide not only abundance of water and food but are gateways to vast wilderness areas. Behind Crater Lake area areas man has not set foot on in centuries such areas like these provide such creatures with the opportunity to continue to remain elusive from cryptozoologist such as myself. However such creatures do leave behind evidence and that is where we come into play. This truly is an amazing area and it is not very well known unless your an avid outdoorsman or your willing to embrace the journey!
