This upper hillside area, known as the European Playground, was intended for non-Asian immigrants. Accessed from the west side of the second floor of the Detention Barracks, the playground offered male immigrants an opportunity to go ouside, get fresh air and exercise. Surrounded by fences toped with barbed wire, immigrants could use the gently sloping area for organized ball games.


The Immigration Station Facility continued to be used as a detention center even after the role detaining immigrants came to an end. The U.S. Army took over the station in 1941. It installed additional fencing and built two new guard towers around the Detention Barracks, which now housed German and Japense prisoners of war.

Chinese and Japanese men were only allowed outside in the fenced recreation yard. It was opened after breakfast and could b e used until dinner time. Women had slightly more freedom and could walk the grounds when accompanied by a female guard. The yard was orginally larger and at one point included a covered pavilion. During WWII the pavilion was torn down to make way for a POW mess hall to your left.

Famed architect Julia Morgan designed twelve employee cottages. Nine were located along this slope and three were located on the hill above the Central Heating Plant. After the station closed the cottages fell into disrepair and were scheduled to be demolished. They were burned down in 1971 for a fire training activity.

 After a long ocean voyage, an immigrant's first steps on U.S. soil were on the wharf leading to the immigration station. They were soon immersed in unfamiliar surroundings, a foreign language, new customs and uncertain fate.


The Steam heat produced by large oil fired boilers in this building kept employees and detainees warm on chilly days. Steam was also piped to the commercial kitchen for cooking. The building also housed an incinerator that burned garbage and a laundry facility that served the hospital. For fire safety, the Central Heating Plant was built from concrete, the only structure at the Immigration Station for which this precaution was taken.

A number of employee families lived at the station. Island Life offered benefits as well as challenges. Older Children took the ferry to San Francisco to attend school, wives shopped at nearby Fort McDowell and husbands walked next door to go to work. The working areas of the station were off limits to family members and contact with detainees were NOT allowed. Residents could explore other areas of the island or to go the movies at Fort McDowell.
