Gold Butte is a ghost town and is an area that covers almost a half of million acres along the edge of the grand canyon in southeastern Nevada. Also known for its rich mines it is an area of many cultural and ancient sites which were once used by the Anasazi. Over the years I have read tales of lost cities and strange sites. Most of these are found in some of the harshest lands. In this case I would have to plan a trip that would take us to a location that is just beginning to capture national interest of a natural wonder.

Tammy and I planned for the worst stocking up on water, sodas, food and supplies. The road into the ghost town of Gold Butte was 21 miles of harsh pavement to another 21 miles of rocky dirt road. Then if you take into consideration the many old wagon roads, trails and mountain ranges which meet here it is a very vast area. Not to mention the fact that the area make up is nestled between the Virgin River....Arizona Mountains....Natural Springs....Desert To Forest fauna it could take years for one to explore the entire area.

This adventure would take us to our limits testing truth strength in what we could accomplish even understaffed. If you ever been through NV you will seen signs stating alien country up ahead with signs to Yucca Mountain. The Yucca Mountain range does intersect with the area thus my excitement built up knowing that we would be offroading and exploring a secluded land 60 miles from the nearest city.

The first visit to the area is a project that will be a two part series as we will return to the region in a couple months. Although new adventures await us I fell in love with this locations fiery red rocks....beautiful sunset and a sky that revealed millions of stars. So far this region has some of the best hiking I have witnessed in southern Nevada but its also a place so many are not aware of with rock walls covered in ancient 4000 year old petroglyphs and many rock shelters.

We set off in the early afternoon losing three volunteers. I am saddened that so many shy away from the paranormal. It is hard putting together a team in Vegas we had one guy who bitched that pitching in a few bucks of gas was not necessary since he owns a video camera, someone who ditched the team then begged for another chance claiming she lost her job the same night of her interview with us, then the escort who shammed the investigation yet added me on myspace. So many do not understand the involvement and commitment it takes to be an actual paranormal investigator. I done my time in the trenches and so has Tammy their are rewards to what we do and they are not always pretty but some of the sites we visit reveal some really good paranormal activity while others are just beautiful locations worth experiencing.

Tammy and I went out for a champagne brunch we had some pretty good food I think others should have came on out the food was great. I had these apple pancakes.....manicotti.....and some heart shaped waffles yum. The nice thing about living in Vegas is we get some pretty good restaurant offers sometimes we even get free dinners you cant beat that and its a great way for us to have lunch or dinner prior to a big exploration.  I ate pretty good sipped some bomb champagne then we headed on off on an adventure that would go into the next day taking us to a region of the grand canyon that was forgotten to the outside world perhaps because so many never realized this hidden gem.

I never go out with expecting to see something of the paranormal but when we work hard we come across such things. Allot of the locations we visit reveal some of the first photos taken ever from some sites we visit. We are happy knowing this and even if they are not we get to share these adventures with our viewers for years to come.

Tammy and I spent a long time putting together maps and things for this investigation. We had planned to investigate the ghost town....mine behind it and a few other sites. Some of them we found others we could not get to or could not locate. Just when you think their are no secret locations left in the world you learn that perhaps Gold Butte is one that many Vegas natives perhaps do not even know about. I remember as we pulled onto the road seeing a sign which warned travelers of flat tires and smoking radiators. I had looked forward to traversing down this road despite the warnings just to walk in a meadow something I would get to do on this trip. .

Nonetheless the adrenalin starts to set in knowing we would be walking among rattle snakes....scorpions and traverse in a place where the cattle roam free.  Their are no hospitals nearby one lethal bite by a rattle snake and a flat tire could mean my death. Sometimes their are risk worth taking and when you run into other adventurers you realize that you are not alone in a world so many do not appreciate perhaps because rare breeds like us no longer exist anymore and when you find them only then can you call them explorer.

We would not realize it but earlier on the highway we seen something fly out from our wheel well not thinking much of it we thought we ran over some debris only to find out later that we lost a part of our tire. We would not find this out till deep into our investigation hanging out to a miracle. I will explain this deeper into our report and you will understand the beauty of this trip. We passed this one site called Pinnacle Rock just one of many sites we would stop and photograph.

Our first visit would take us to the CCC Dam & Storage Room and the nearby Devils Throat so our viewers will get a double feature here. Later during the evening we would eventually make it into Gold Butte and its Mine. We would have to be careful as certain mines were mined for radioactive material. I did not feel like growing multiple arms and legs as then you would read on all those paranormal blogging sites that Gold Butte has some leaping tattooed monster so ummm yeah stay away from those mines. We would however visit areas that made the area what it is or at least some of the more stranger sites found within. That first site would be our opener for the evening and our adventure would begin here.

CCC Dam/Storage/Devils Throat

You would never find this place if you did not know what it is you are looking for. Tammy and I were pretty excited as we took a road that followed the Virgin River. What started off with desert changed to a gloomy landscape filled with sculpted red rocks which looked like melted candle wax. The river would disappear but the plant life would not as we passed a location with hundreds of large Joshua trees.

Tammy and I parked near this strange rock and we managed to get ourselves stuck on a bunch of stickers which pierced our socks. I must had spent about an hour picking these dry sharp chutes out of my socks and sneakers. They are more annoying then anything as each step I take reveals a pinch.

I was amazed at the seclusion of the location never passing any vehicles it was just us and mother nature. The sky was clear even the moon was visible even mid afternoon. We would not have a full moon but a Gibbous Moon which would give us some fair amount of light to seek out remnants of the ghost town of Gold Butte which also is a region that is divided into 5 land management areas.

I had interest to take a brief exploration here as I was looking for a wall of ancient writings. I never would find the wall here but we did hike around these giant red rock formations and even found a rock shelter. This area was special with wild flowers growing and only a few miles from the Arizona border.  After walking around this giant structure of many red rocks I hiked up a canyon only to find myself on top of a dam roughly 20 to 30 feet above it.

Tammy was still trailing so I waited for her studying a way to get to the bottom of each side since the dam was dry. When Tammy caught up to me we found this narrow stairwell behind the dam that led us up the canyon where actual grass grew. Their was a small stone reservoir it was dry and we took a break here. Earlier when we went down the stairs I knocked over a beer can that someone had left. So due to this factor bees were swarming the narrow cool canyon and some of them were landing on me. All you could hear is a loud buzz so we had to be careful of not getting stung especially being as far from civilization good thing I am not allergic.

We were drenched as the temperature was soaring so being in the canyon gave us some shade. Their was an old pipe on the ground and some old wood also. We found another way down onto the other side of the dam tried to get some food photos but the suns reflection kept whiting us out. I hate sunny days especially when you try to photograph something and the suns ruins the shoot.

Tammy and I found an old watering trough and even a stone wall just outside the canyon. Across the street we found an older couple camping near the CCC Dam Storage Site. Their was a historical plaque up near a wall of red rock with a shelter covered by a stone wall at least half of it was. The campers seemed friendly although I will admit the guy was extremely nervous with me perhaps it was because I carry a 12 inch hunting knife on me but whatever it was I think that some campers need to use common sense when camping out here. He had his four wheeler right near the storage room and the one dog they were holding back was barking like made. When I went to kneel down to take a photo of the storage room the other dog licked my face so at least the animals were getting along with me. I would not interrupt their camp to long but enough to get a few photos. I had noticed inside the storage room their was allot of graffiti all written in black with names and dates.

Tammy and I almost finished up the Whitney Packets when we found a series of rock formations further down the road. I could not locate the petroglyphs but we found an old rock shelter. I climbed a few of the giant rocks looking for an ancient symbols of the past. Sadly after a couple hours of being here I realized that the sun we so desperately needed was going behind the mountains fast and we had many more sites to go. The area was vast all we could see for miles is Lake Mead....rock formations and desert. Their were parts that were greener and those areas  had wild cattle just lumbering along the road. It sure is funny when you try to take a photo of these creatures they actually stop just to look at you and well that's not usually a good thing when it comes to a big bull with horns.

After a hike in the Gold Butte region we were ready to up our journey and get to the more strange sites found here. We were already 23 miles in and still had about 19 more miles till we could park ourselves right in the middle of the town site. Off in the distance to the west we could see rock so red it looked like its on fire then to the east was the vastness of the grand canyon. Our road from here would be challenging as we would take on the heart of Gold Butte. We had to be careful as our vehicle was running very hot so without keeping a steady speed at all times we would overheat so I had to keep us rolling until we arrived in the ghost town of Gold Butte which was still over 12 miles away from the CCC Dam Site.

On our way to Gold Butte we were going about 7 miles up the road when we found a turn off. We would take this road for a quarter of mile and stop. I was searching for Devil's Throat which is this giant sink hole in the middle of the desert. We hiked near some old wood post when all around me were these black holes with soft sand all around us. I was a bit cautious because I stepped in this one location and the ground started to give away. The holes around me were black rumor has it their are empty limestone caverns that are common in the area and when the limestone gets weakened they give away causing sink holes. I did not want to be consumed by one of these so after a few dangerous turns I decided to go back to the car and look for Devils Throat further up the road.

We had to be careful hiking around out here I found a few small holes in the sand that looked very deep. I remember I stepped down and my foot sank right down into a hole. Rumor has it that their may be other sink holes forming in the area that could pose a threat to hikers. It was my lucky day hiking around the holes at anytime it could give causing me to fall for a hundred feet. Eventually we made our way over to Devils Throat it was getting dark out so we were a couple hundred feet from the location.

Tammy and I found Devils Throat it was fenced in and at times had new fencing over the sink hole as you could tell that it had expanded a little since the first time fence was laid out. I climbed the fence to look down inside and I must say this is one of the most unusual sink holes I ever found. It was almost 100 feet straight down their is no slopes they are sheer drop offs. The hole was around 8 feet wide and here this location was in the middle of the open desert.  One side of the sink hole had these sharp rocks sticking upward so if one were to fall they would hit these sharp rocks then bounce off till they hit the bottom. I would have to be careful as I made a video of me hanging over the edge holding onto the fence and filming the bottom of it. Even if I survived a fall into the pit of darkness getting out of the pit would be nearly impossible so we did our filming here as Tammy turned her head when I leaned over the hole in fascination.

The road from here would be rough for example it curved along some steep edges while one part of it looked like a rock slide came off the hill covering it. We seen a few roads that went to other destinations but before nightfall we wanted to be in the ghost town exploring and doing our investigation. My only wish is I had more time to see other sites like Devils Fire which could be seen from miles away but the excitement built as to what we might find out in the ghost town.  We were lucky to have made it so far bringing a car through the Gold Butte region is not the best decision but I learned that some risk are also worth taking. I do not always have the most expensive gear or equipment but we always manage to pull it off. As I looked in my rear view mirror I could see Whitney Pockets fading away and a road ahead that would test our limits.

I know that I am not one to write much, possibly because finding the time is nearly impossible. But since I just slept 14 hours straight and it is 4am with everyone is asleep I have found the time to do so.  Yesterday Rick and I returned from an adventure that I wont forget for a while.  We started off the evening by going out to dinner and fueling our bodies for the trip into the vast wilderness area of Gold Butte Nevada.  The trip started off uneventful riding in the car out to our destination.  We noticed while we were driving a small noise from the drivers side, however we thought it must have been something we ran over on the freeway, but later we would find that we weren't so lucky.  That noise we heard was actually part of the tread flying off our tire!!!

CCC Dam Site & Devils Throat

We arrived in the Gold Butte area around 3:00pm and began our exploration in an area full of petroglyphs and historical locations.  We visited a location first that was supposed to have a man made dam, however after walking around and looking for the dam and petroglyphs, we were not having much luck.  But Rick was there to save the day and he found the dam nestled in a canyon.  It was a very scenic location with a view of the desert that most never get to see.  We climbed up the stone stairs to the top of the dam and when we looked inside we found nothing but sand and grass.. yep grass in the desert.  It appears that this area was utilized by a frontiersman as across the way was a storage unit built into the side of a rock.  We sat at the dam for a little while taking pictures and just enjoying the tranquility of the area before we decided to cross the road and visit the storage unit. There were a couple of campers who had set up their camp right in front of the storage area, and although we needed to get through their campground to take pictures, we were very considerate and spoke with the couple before traversing through their campground.  I must also note that the couple had two dogs ( both appeared to be mixed breeds) and one of then really liked Rick, when he got down low to take a picture he ran up to him and tried to lick him in the face.  After taking pictures there, we decided it was time to leave to go and explore a place called Devils Throat.

Devils Throat was a very interesting place, the ground was very soft in various areas, and prone to sinkholes so we had to be careful where we stepped because this could have been the last step we took.  When we arrived at Devils Throat it was very eerie.  Not eerie in a spooky kinda way, but eerie to think that a sink hole could develop and swallow an entire block if not more.  The sinkhole located at Devils Throat was about 100-125 feet deep and approximately 50 yards across, enough to swallow a couple of houses.  Rick being daring as usual decided to climb over the fence to take pictures and had me worried the entire time that it might become larger and he might fall.  This of course would not have been good as there is no cell service in this area, it is pretty much a dead zone!
