Friday
was our last investigation of 2006 and we finished the year going out in a
blaze of glory as we visited four extremely interesting places. I am sorry
the report is a little late I am still pretty exhausted from the
adventure. Friday was a very hard day for me cause I spent half of the day
in toy stores waiting in line then had to take an old friend to the bus
stop out near Orlando turn around come home and get ready to adventure
into the heart of Florida's forgotten jewels.
The four places we visited were Wekiwa Springs Pronounced Wekiwa...,.Central
Florida Railroad, Sorrento Cemetery and Rock Springs & Cavern with a
twist to the night. I have to say that this has been one of our best
adventures down here in along time. Andrew and I were talking about it for
awhile yesterday and it was really a test to see how far of our limits
could be pushed.
Andrew said to me he has never met anybody who would ever do some of the
things we did Friday especially under all the circumstances we had to
endure. We had a great night though and now I bring it all to you as we
bring you our pre Christmas adventure.
Wekiwa
Springs
We stopped at a gas station to pick up food not sure what the deal is but
I have not seen in a 7-Eleven in freaking weeks that has had a jumbo
hotdog. I been to like 10 of them this month they must be on strike
towards hungry paranormal investigators or something lol.
We pulled up in a very ritzy neighborhood hell the one house had a talking
electronic Santa Claus singing jingle bells. Their were some people
watching us I mean it was a nice night mid 70's was storming earlier that
evening so the humidity was high. The people watched us grab all our gear
and me put on a Santa hat I am sure no doubt they probably got scared that
is just how people are down here.
We started our voyage in the woods no trails nothing just straight up
forest. It took a long time to make our way threw this place. Their was no
rush though we just were enjoying the outdoors.
We came up to a road and had a choice to either head towards the camp/lake
or springs. I chose the springs cause that was our main focus. I wanted to
be close to the water and go deeper into Wekiwa. We followed the road till
off to our left we seen a little passage into the woods which went down
hill.
We took a stairwell down made of stone near a wood board which displayed
the history to the area, warned of alligators, black bear etc the history
is very interesting to this location. As soon as we went down the stone
steps to our left was this giant crystal clear spring. The water was so
blue the water was tempting to jump into.
These springs were extremely large their was a wood bridge crossing them,
a stone wall surrounding the springs, life rings, stairwells leading down
into the water etc etc we took our time walking around them and I seen a
giant cat fish near one of the stairwells. I also heard thrashing in the
water so I was curious if an alligator was swimming around this area. Then
some bird freaked out and flew away from us squawking away like crazy.
I felt a strong presence around the springs the thing people do not
understand is that the state of FL is made of springs and underground
caverns. A lot of these people swim in the springs a lot of them drown
some of them get scuba gear and swim into these under water caverns
getting lost, drowning, etc each spring has usually a boil you can swim
down into.
We walked down a trail and past the springs where it opened up to a very
marshy type of river and around that corner was the canoe rental shop. The
light was on the small wood shack and we took a break then moved on back
to the springs crossing this long wooden bridge.
I found a trail on the other side going deep into the Wekiwa woods so we
took it. The area was a nice boardwalk at first with marsh below us, wet
lands, and forest which were so thick on both sides at times. We hiked a
fairly long ways till we came up to a dirt trail going left or right. At
this point we took a break had a session cause we both knew things were
going to get intense once we got further from the springs.
Andrew and I decided to head towards an area near the Indian mounds and a
lake. We never did make it that far but we got close as between the
humidity, lack of marked trails, and mileage we just could not fit it all
in during one night.
We back packed a fairly long ways on the trail and at one time we had
something toying with us in the woods. More then likely it was an animal
but I will keep an openmind since it did not show fear with us. We came
around the corner and it was walked just past some brush and trees.
It seems to stop when we stopped then it followed us a good ways down the
trail. Eventually it crossed the trail not sure how we did not see this
thing and crashed hard to our left snapping branches. Whatever it was had
to be no more then 15 to 20 feet away. We did not see a thing but whatever
it was had some intelligence in escaping out eyes.
Later down the trail the same thing happened again so we are not sure what
to think about it. But the woods seemed to be fairly alive. Eventually we
came up to another trail which said 4 miles and we decided to head on back
to the truck did not want to scare the locals to much.
We started our hike back down a road and eventually to the entrance. When
I got back to the car I realized I lost an old roll of film from a few
previous investigations trust me I was pretty upset. But when your hiking
in the woods sometimes you get tears in your back pack and lose
things that is what appeared to have happened. I was kind of sad but its
part of being an adventurer equipment breaks, you lose things, you get
injured, you get sick, you run into wild animals etc this is all part of
what we do and we have to learn to deal with it or we would never move on.
After this investigation I drank about a liter of water and changed my
clothes it was just way to hot out some winter we are having here in FL I
just about prayed for snow Friday night lol seriously. We then headed on
off to the Central Florida Railroad.
