I did some research into cryptids of Illinois and one of the most fascinating ones had to do with the Piasa Bird. I am not sure its even a bird its more like a dragon but I read how it would eat the local natives if not terrorize them. I also thought that maybe they could have been thunderbirds but just described differently by the natives because tales have a way to get twisted through the centuries.

I just left the Alton National Cemetery and trust me I spent a good portion of the day hiking around there. I did not realize that the Piasa site had caves till I arrived there that is after cruising through haunted historic Alton then eventually along the Mississippi River. If you never seen this river its something all of you should do its so wide and I could see back in ancient times giant birds swooping down to catch a meal.
 
When I pulled up at the site the Piasa art was very faint hard to see honestly but the old petroglyphs are gone of the bird. Their was a plaque also a stone monument on the site. These cliffs or bluffs are rather high that is because the water of the river at one time probably came up to them you can tell just study the rock faces.
 
The traffic on this highway is a bit busy so its hard to film or do EVP but I did some around the caves. Their was two giant cave openings both go into the cave just at different angles just seventy five feet apart. Honestly, I was not prepped to go into the caves this is one of those things last minute your like lets grab a light and go on in type of situations.
 
I seen signs about sink holes and danger loose rocks so the caves are closed. I was told by Tammy at the time people died here in the cave. I also read later about human bones and other strange finds deeper in the cave. These caves are limestone so if you have sink holes it means below you are caverns also which is why the ground is starting to sink in because the water below your feet has eroded those caverns and they are dry or drying up.
 
So its a bit of a dangerous area and I had others with me which opted out of going into the caves. But I wanted to not just give everyone a history lesson on film, do some EVPs but rather go into the caves for a couple hundred feet get a few photos maybe some videos so we could put it into our documentary.
 
I went into the caves you could tell they been quarried here is the thing the caves been here hundreds of years but in the mid 1800s convicts had enlarged it so now its unstable. You could see where massive rocks came down and if you get hit in the skull with any of them that is certain death and its so random. So think about it when I go out and explore how I assume risk just to show our viewers something awesome PLEASE.
 
I did walk around the cave but as it started to go down I was slipping in deep mud I lost my balance a few times and my light was bright but it still was dark as I went deeper into it. I did not stay long not because I was scared but because my company outside the cave was getting hungry wanted to head off to dinner soon. So I had just enough time to go down into the cave to get some photos.

When I first entered I thought I heard something in the dark section of the cave as it started to go down maybe movement, a whisper etc but it was hard to make out. Not sure I was alone and I think the cave itself may be haunted remember the caves are ancient before they were mined for its limestone! I heard human bones have been found in the caves around here so either people died in these caves or the natives may have used some of these caves for ancient burials which was a common practice of many tribes.
 
I noticed two things in the cave one was a human barefoot track the other was a strange giant bird like track with I think three toes almost dinosaur like. Maybe these bird still lives I know that sounds strange but years ago Tammy told me as a child at dusk she heard this giant bird making god awful sounds and noticed in the street lamps the shadow of the wings was condor sized if not bigger. Lots of strange tales in Illinois of Thunderbirds and kids being lifted in the air by unknown giant birds. I believe some still might exist!
 
The cave was pretty cool but folks had spray painted and broken glass everywhere its not the place you run around barefoot anyways. I did not stay long to many risk did not have a hard hat and it was hella muddy. You have to go to these places with gear and equipment I just left the cemetery and was just doing casual things that day so I did not have enough to go deeper but its still a cool place lots of history here too in relation to the natives and the bird lore.
 
It was a pretty good evening after getting out of the cave I stopped down the road at Lincoln Douglas Debate Square which had some copper statues, flowers, memorials and benches. Some rich history here with the mill behind it saying welcome to Alton downtown with all the spooky little churches and shops.
 
We did not stay long because we had to get to dinner and after I went back the hotel with my son we went swimming and in the hot tub. Where I drank a few beers then went to bed because we were not even half way done adventuring in Illinois we still had three more days of adventuring to follow. Our next expedition would take us to the Cahokia Mounds and the St Louis Zoo.
 
I do not know if I had gotten any EVPs at the Piasa Site but I do know it was worth a gander to bring our fans and followers a cool story. I noticed the power poles kept setting off my EMF Gadget so I could not use the detector but I could record some EVP while I investigated some.

Not paranormal but still weird this is not a cave you ever want to be barefoot in lots of broken glass. I read that the Piasa bird or monster always left behind a strange tracks some times three perhaps four toe tracks. I did see some strange tracks in the cave like that I just did not focus on them. But you can see them in our movie section I did mention and film them in the documentary. This creature was said to live in the caves perhaps at the entrance they nested so they could be sheltered from the elements. At the time the Mississippi River would have came up to the caves entrance so these bird like creatures probably fed on fish and lived off the water it just makes sense.
