I try to make it a tradition to do some paranormal research in Virginia City in October and December of every year. I have to say I am really proud of our group how extensive the projects we have done in this living ghost town. Each time I think I have seen it all I find more locations I can delve on into and some of them do turn out to be a great haunt.

I am allot different then other groups I try to have fun and I enjoy the folks I meet along my journeys. Allot of times I do extreme adventuring but other times I like to focus on history as well as preservation. Allot of Virginia City remains then again allot is gone. These sites here out west they wont last forever sometimes you have hopes that they do but we are lucky to see and share them.

I enjoy going up to Virginia City to have some brews, hike and check out historic sites. I always have fun and the people there treat me with honor something I have a hard time finding anymore. But when I am in this wilder western town my problems go away I toke on hill sides above the town, search for treasure, chase the paranormal and party all at the same time. People need to do that they need to try to understand life is to short if you spend your entire paranormal career worrying about what others think then your missing the big picture.

Learning to laugh and not expecting anything is the best way to investigate in this field. Personally I do not have a big team Tammy helps me here and there or my sons. Some places I go in or handle by myself but no less we always welcome others to join our team if your up for it. No less I try to take our casework at entirely new levels and we mix up the kind of locations that we take on. One minute we might be offroading and the next ghostbusting some haunted house that is how we roll here.

Every trip we take its unique in itself no matter where we go. I look back at the years we have done this and I really have to say its been a great run. It has also been a great month the work that we do is crafted like art from our own hands and hard work. It is important to have passion and belief into what you do if you want to experience such places. This is my favorite time of year I get dressed up get pumpkin spice lattes and just explore till I cant stand anymore!

So with that in mind we were lucky enough to visit two more great locations in Virginia City one being the Old Storey County Courthouse & Jail the other being the Comstock Gold Mill & Savage Mansion. At the time when we arrived here we had to take a detour it was okay the hills back in here and views are stellar. Once in time I realized they were having that Thompson The Train event downtown hosted by the Virginia Truckee Railroad. Yes I would encounter Thomas later during the day believe me lol.

Downtown was dead not one soul out and no cars I was like wow this town is mine for the day boy was I wrong. Give it an hour or two and its ass to ass everywhere you go. I cant say I blame anyone its fun to drink, listen to music, check out the ladies, eat at the steakhouse, go explore some shit and finish off your day smoking a joint watching the sunset. I am not going to sugar coat anything other then to say that when you been a paranormal investigator as long as I have you learn that culture stands for something when you step back in time here.

I stopped at the visitors center as I always do the gentleman working there was very nice. When you visit Virginia City no matter what attire you where people do not judge again culture. But its easy to see cowboys, women in long Victorian dresses, men with top hats and then me with a cape running down the alleys screaming like a banshee lol. I feel honored to know though I have investigated some major sites here such as the Mackay Mansion, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Flowery Mining District, China Town, Cemeteries, Washoe Club, St Mary's Church and Hospital, Julia Bulette red light museum, Comstock Mills, Train Yard, American Flats and everything else we been to in between.

I decided to go off roading for about an hour or two I want to make a trip to the top of Mount Davidson the tallest in the Virginia Range. One can see for over 200 miles overlooking at Washoe City, Reno, Carson City, Dayton and all the wilderness beyond those cities. At this point I figured maybe ill go up to Ophir Hill but being I had a flat recently I have to be careful as one of my fires went back two weeks ago. So we decided maybe after we get our paranormal work done will just hike it. Ophir is about a mile and half to the peak its not to bad. Mount Davidson requires more effort but its better to go up there in the winter so you can see all the snow draped across the various mountain ranges.

The mountain road is rugged it gets better if you can get past this boulder and its near the edge. I pulled up on the boulder sat it there to follow a deer down the road which appeared to have had a broken leg. It vanished into the brush and I found a small hole in the ground it was a mine. I stuck my head in to have a look it appeared the tunnel gets better once you get through the hole but  you would not want to be in it during a tremor. There is also allow of dump piles up this canyon on rolling hillsides. Most of the mines been sealed due to them being dangerous or tourist going in them. This was another mining district of Virginia City.

I would not learn till later during the day that many of those mines on the side of Mount Davidson up to Ophir Peak were ran by the Chinese miners. They would have a shaft that went down to the bottom of the mountain about half way up then take that tunnel underground to China Town because of how segregated Virginia City was. When I was out walking around I think about the fact that below my feet are over 700 miles of tunnels some as deep as 3,200' down into the earth.

I checked it out made a future note about hiking up into the canyon maybe stand on Ophir or going past Ophir then coming up on top of Mountain Davidson's back side. I would not have time to do either but I did ride my jeep on a few dirt roads back here and found a bunch of old historical homes high up above the town. I simply wish we had more time to hike or offroad I could do it night and day lol. But we did bring food, gear, drinks etc to hike after we finished the Old Storey County Jail and the Comstock Gold Mill. Unfortunately the sun goes behind the mountains far to quickly here so be advised that the only way to climb some of these mountains is to get an early start otherwise you wont see nothing out here at night its that dark!!!

I was beginning to feel out the area as I never been on the towns western edge for that matter exploring the area surrounding Mount Davidson. I found a mine or mill near there on the maps I want to check out however if you explore enough of the lower end of the mountain your going to find out mining went on extensively back here. I ended up taking this very narrow, overgrown and rocky road up into the next canyon over from where I was just at. This canyon is called Ophir Canyon which in VC its a popular name because back in the day it was a successful mine and mill.

I continued up the road but it had gotten bad nowhere I mean absolutely nowhere any place to turn around. All I could do is climb up into one of Mountain Davidson's deep canyons. There was mining dump piles everywhere one must assume that when the ore was brought out of the mines allot of times it may have spilled over into the wagon road or fell off the back end. So allot of rocks, brush, drop offs and finally an area where I could turn the jeep around. Now it was not a huge area maybe a couple feet but enough to do a 15 point turn eventually making a bad situation turn for the better. This road was difficult to navigate a few times the loose rocks were not allowing me to get traction or climb.

So upon having it turned around I was like lets grab the gear and will hike. Well this old mining road has a patch of forest more like this thick rats nest of brush that if you climb in your getting lost. On google it looks like an area where you could sit under a tree but hell no yeah that is if you could get to a tree. It was a jungle but once you scurried past that part of the canyon there was just a wall of sage brush. My goal was to do some metal detecting its obvious there was a mill back here at one time you might find an old coin someone carried or belt buckle.

The old mining road was covered in horse dung it was bad real bad. I was trying to avoid it but if that does not get you the brush will here. If your going to visit Virginia City you have to do it all that includes exploring and hiking. There is allot hidden in these hills if you go looking for it. We climbed for a few hundred feet up the road deeper into this winding canyon standing on some old dump piles. I think I seen a couple word boards and pieces of aluminum. You could tell at one time before the sage brush a nice mining operation stood here in the 1800's.

We spent about an hour metal detecting found an old bullet but also allot of newer shells from outdoorsman target practicing. I found a few old rusted nails also but no I did not strike it rich no coins or gold sorry lol. If I struck gold id have to invest in some bigfoot cams or something. I remember once above Virginia City I was hiking when I found these two to three tracks of some monster and then they just vanished. I think there is allot more to that area besides just ghost I really do based on my journeys. However at the time one can think that when your standing at these mine sites the history behind them which including many accidental deaths.

I climbed around there was some cook rock formations and I could see Virginia City below the canyons mouth. I had my fun waving the metal detector around but soon it would be time for us to investigate the old jail. I get in these hills I become a big kid I want to run, play and see everything I can including the history below our feet.

For me every new area in Virginia Cities just puts me closer to fulfilling our promise to all our members I made when we relocated out this way. Despite our website is down its only temporarily since right now I am moving everything onto a new server and eventually the locations I am about to talk about today. After offroading, metal detecting and checking out some mine sites I pulled up at the Old Storey County Courthouse. I also stopped a block away at an old fire house shed which houses a hose. I guess after the great fire these were built that way if a fire ever broke out like that again someone could immediately get it under control. There was a plaque which talked about it and then we found another one on a wall behind the Jail right where I parked at.

Tammy and I decided to head a block away to use the bathrooms and check out what is going on with the Delta Saloon. I went into the saloon there was no booze at the bar, no slot machines just big empty space and certainly my favorite area to dine at was closed which is the restaurant below the hotel. The Delta had these Suicide Ales I use to drink and brought friends to enjoy.

Now all that is left there is the cursed Suicide Table and a few chairs to sit down as well as a gift shop. Its sad but I guess they changed owners and something went wrong financially government went in took what was owed. I do hope an owner will get it and bring it back to its former glory its always been a location I was looking forward to investigating in the future. As it is has some pretty good ghost stories!

We walked back up the hill enjoying the old Opera House which is an investigation I have lined up next year in Virginia City. They have a saloon built into the Opera House so next year its beers and a nice paranormal investigation of the place. For now though we were on our way to the Old Storey County Courthouse & Jail.

Old Storey County Courthouse & Jail
The Peace Officers Museum

I had to get all our gear into order I had a nice cooler full of goodies and drinks. What more could I want some Halloween mask, cane, top hat and a stroll through one the more well known haunted locations found in Virginia City. The curator was outside she was very kind to me and I told her id be going out back behind the courthouse and jail to check out a few things.

I usually try to start off now filming the outside of these locations for youtube so that is what I was doing is discussing the history while filming various angles of the building. Its a very old site the original courthouse was built in 1861 then burned down being replaced with this one built in the 70's. It is Italianate on the outside while art deco on the inside. During the weekends the courthouse is closed however you can get access into the jail and can peer into the main lobby at the entrance through these big iron doors that resemble something you would see in a castle or dungeon.

The curator told me a few things I did not know that you would only learn if you spoke to her. But apparently children were also celled here with there moms. The prisoners did not have a yard but they could walk around the jail fairly free and four men to one tiny cell. Trust me I went in a cell and it was small I would have freaked out lol. Two individuals per bunk and also learned the jail stayed open till the mid 80's. She was very informative about the history here which helped me understand how this prison operated.

One can imagine outlaws spent some time here just as Julia Bulette's killer spent time in one of these cells then was hung up on boot hill for his crimes. You had rowdy drunk miners ending up in jail due to fighting or someone creating a disturbance. A mother who may have stolen bread to feed her kids would do time here. All sorts of people over the years were imprisoned here and there are no views. There is no yard, one fire escape and ideally a huge wall surrounding this place. Your time spent here was probably very miserable and over the years its reported to be haunted. The curator told me at times people come in and get weird photos. I read some stories about objects being displaced, voices, scratches and shadowy apparitions being seen here so I was very excited to maybe experience something.

The jail has 10 cells two of them are solitary with one being above the other one. The solitary doors are nearly solid no bars but a small window. The cell doors were very heavy to shut and open. Escaping this place was not an option for many believe me. Most of the criminals houses here met some pretty ill fates up at the top of boot hill by rope. Its possible there ghost still haunt the jail however its also possible that each law enforcement relic housed here may also come with a ghost story. Today if you were to enter some of the cells one can see old wall art drew by the prisoners during there stay here.

The jail is filled with museum artifacts that take a more in depth look at police history across the nation. There are badges, guns, Billy club, sirens, call boxes, uniforms newspaper articles, artifacts and anything in between in relation to police officers. I was lucky enough to hear an old crank siren and see gangster John Dillanger's Death Mask. I seen bells, battering rams, handcuffs, whistles, memorials and some grim pictures. One of the pictures with a news article talks about a man who was hung who was hurting children then tried to climb the rope. So the crowd stripped off his close then they tortured him forcing him to hang himself. They had another photo of a policeman who was killed near a car.

There is allot of history here a NYC and Chicago section just as other displays that revolve around Nevada Policing such as in Reno or Carson City. I seen allot of interesting relics like the last call box in Reno or something that belonged to some notorious killer. Everything here has a story while many of the badges today are of deceased or retired police officers. There is even a children's room in one of the cells and a memorial in the other one. I really think they did a good job displaying protect and serve. I wish more cops nowadays understood what it means to be a good cop and you just do not see it often. Back then based on all that I studied it appeared that the badge was about honor and you see allot of that honor in this museum which should be cherished.

I even had gotten to dress up as a cop with the uniform, belt and old helmets they wore. I am not sure what the deal was but the uniform did not fit me I told Tammy maybe I have been eating to many doughnuts and coffee. Ehhh I made a sharp looking fat cop its all good luckily the buttons did not bust off like my trench coat I was wearing metal detecting earlier. The curator was kind enough to take our pictures and she really liked the fact that I was already dressed up prior to coming into the museum. The curators also dress up like officers its pretty fun. I was just happy for a brief moment in time to wear the badge and do some kung fu with the night stick lol.

I also seen a old lie detector machine, bomb squad suit, x-ray machine, weapons, tools and an old safe. The museum has a large collection of police memorabilia so you kind of get both. I had gotten to enjoy the police history inside an old haunted jail two birds with one stone WIN. The Museum is not bias it houses the good, bad and ugly. You get a real look into the lives of police officers and the evil they had faced. When you read articles about heroes and those that lost there lives with photos you think these were people too.

I did try to do a thorough investigation of the jail I spent awhile here there is allot to read and see. Some areas were off limits like the courthouse and jailors room. I only had a gander into the courthouse lobby loved the old light fixtures and woodwork. This building is truly historic in every way and to think that during the weekdays the courthouse is still open to some extent. The only other courthouse of this kind is in Eureka Nevada. Tammy tried to take EMF Gauss readings it was a no go to many lights, gadgets etc that set it off therefore we could not get a credible accurate readout.

We would eventually leave there is this massive iron gate that has to be opened for you to exit the building. Back in the day they were thorough in making sure there was no easy way out of this place. That iron was impossible to get through when locked. When I arrived back outside I immediately went to take some photos of flowers on the hill that caught my eye. You guys know me and nature its easy to get side tracked by it even when your chasing ghosts. I liked this place many years ago when I graduated high school I had wanted to be a cop I really did it was my dream career. I never had gotten that chance because as a teen I ended up living on my own at a very young age but seeing these items really made it so worth visiting.

Walter Gist who was a police chief had quite the collection the curator told me about 80 percent of it can be found inside this jail. I was impressed with it hundreds of really great items as old as dating back to the 1700's. American History can be fantasy if you delve into it enough! I really think that it would take a few visits to read everything found within its walls. I wish the top cells were open to check out but I did not even see a way to get up there. One thing is for sure every cell has rocky walls lined with steel plates. Although it was not haunted some outlaws spent there time in the very cells police memorabilia is found!

If you go behind the jail and courthouse there is a brick building built in front of a tall wall all covered in ivy and boarded up. I often wonder what that was used for or why it was forgotten. There is a wall facing the south and west side of the courthouse. The walls are at least 15 to 20' high therefore if you were to escape back in the day there was no way over it. Seeing walls in old boom towns is not common as Masons made them with there hands all over town. However the tallest walls I found to be right here perhaps to mask the prisoners that were housed here.

I cant say I experienced ghost but I will say this when Tammy and I had our photos taken I went to take my uniform off leaving my camera on the bench next to us. The camera took a photo all on its own without anyone touching it just something to make a mental note of. Now I cant say ghost did it but then again with all the stories I have heard I would not put it past me for a minute. These kind of things occur here all the time and it is a notable haunted site.

After we enjoyed our research at the courthouse we went downtown to go shopping and get some lunch. The candy shop gives away free root beer barrels and everyone seems to always be having a good time. Virginia City is always bustling lately as you have wild western shows, stage coach rides, train coming through town and shops offering great deals. Some man showed me some old white buffalo jewelry and we even went to the new skull store which is really bad ass.

We had lunch at the Mustang Ranch Lounge which is owned by the same individuals who own the brothel. The steak house was very packed it was funny because there was three other Ricks ahead of me. But within 15 minutes we had gotten called and its a really nice restaurant. They have wood stoves, large comfortable seats, wine bar, balcony overlooking the mountains below and a nice downstairs lounge as well. I had a very tasty pastrami burger and Tammy had this really beautiful put together house salad. The food was great my burger was huge and they gave me allot of fries. I always wanted to eat here service and the food are top of the line believe me!

After a great lunch we decided to finish up shopping around I was trying to look for a new cane. They have all sorts of cool things if you look around. I like shopping downtown allot of creepy items for sale like skulls or metaphysical items. We then decided after walking downtown for awhile we would come back later for brews which we would do it was time to enjoy the second half of the day by visiting the Comstock Gold Mill.

One of the more infamous relics found in the museum is the John Dillingers Death Mask this is one of the five that were made on the night he was killed at the Cook County Morgue along with some clippings which you can read if you come see it in person. It does not matter how you cut it the mask is morbid and I do hold some reservations that its quite possible that this was Dillinger's look alike or double. Their are some flaws in the mask that over the years have stirred up controversy or a conspiracy. I will post a more in depth article below the photos and you can form your own

Death

By: http://www.crimemuseum.org/crime-library/john-dillinger/

Following Dillinger’s last staged bank robbery in South Bend, Indiana, where he killed another policeman, Hoover made the unprecedented step of placing a $10,000 reward on Dillinger’s head. About a month after the announcement, a friend of Dillinger’s, an illegal immigrant working at a brothel under the stage name Ana Sage, tipped off the police. She was under the impression that the FBI would prevent her from deportation if she helped them. Sage told officials that Dillinger planned to attend a film at the Biograph Theater in Chicago. Armed agents waited outside of the theater waiting for Ana’s signal (a red dress). Upon exiting the theater, Dillinger sensed the set-up and sprinted into an alley where he was fatally shot.

Legends

Several inconsistencies that were discovered upon Dillinger’s death have contributed to his legendary status:

  • Several witnesses claim that the man who was shot had brown eyes, as does the coroner’s report. But Dillinger’s eyes were distinctly gray.
  • The body had signs of rheumatic heart disease that Dillinger was never known to have had. The body might have also shown signs of a childhood illness that was not recorded in Dillinger’s early medical files.
  • In 1963 The Indianapolis Star received a letter from a sender claiming to be John Dillinger. A similar letter was also sent to the Little Bohemia Lodge.
  • The gun on display for years at the FBI headquarters that was allegedly used by Dillinger against FBI agents outside of the Biograph Theater on the day of his death was not his and was recently proven to have been manufactured years after his death. The original gun was missing for several years, but recently turned up in the FBI’s collection.

Is John Dillinger dead or alive? Much of the controversy surrounding Dillinger’s death has to do with the post-mortem identification of his body. There are some who believe that the individual who was shot and killed by FBI agents on the night of July 22, 1934 outside the Biograph Theatre in Chicago, IL was not John Dillinger, but perhaps Dillinger-look-alike and petty criminal Jimmy Lawrence. Dillinger had in fact been using the pseudonym Jimmy Lawrence around Chicago for quite some time.

There may have been a good reason too for the FBI to cover up a mistake on their part, if in fact it was not John Dillinger who they killed. Just a few months before his death, Dillinger and his gang settled in to the Little Bohemia Lodge in Wisconsin, where they hid out of sight of the authorities. The innkeepers found out who they were harboring but were promised that no harm would befall them. Meanwhile, Dillinger didn’t trust them, and made sure that a member of his gang followed them into town, watched their every move, and listened in on all their phone calls and conversations. On one occasion, though, word was transmitted to the FBI that Dillinger was hiding out at the Little Bohemia Lodge, and FBI Agent Melvin Purvis assembled his team to storm the lodge and capture Dillinger. The execution didn’t work out as planned, and on top of the entire Dillinger Gang escaping the Lodge unharmed, Purvis and his agents managed to kill several innocent bystanders and lost a member of their team in a gunfight exchange. The incident nearly lost Hoover his title of Director of the FBI and the incident embarrassed the entire Bureau and cast doubt on their ability to maintain order. A second embarrassment of that nature during another Dillinger capture might well have been grounds for dismissal of many of the top FBI officials, and perhaps even graver repercussions for the Bureau.

There were other dubious circumstances surrounding the events that followed Dillinger’s death. The informant who notified Purvis where Dillinger would be that evening, Anna Sage, was promised U.S. citizenship in exchange for her information; however, when the dust finally settled, she ended up being deported after all. Another point of contention was that the person who was killed that night was even carrying a weapon. FBI agents claimed to have seen Dillinger reach for a weapon before he set off running into the side alleyway. The FBI even showcased in their headquarters the gun that was supposedly on Dillinger’s body the night he was killed. It turns out, however, that the small Colt semi-automatic pistol on display at the FBI was only manufactured after Dillinger’s death, making it impossible to have been the one he was allegedly carrying.

And then there were the autopsy findings, which were equivocal. Forensic analysis of the victim showed that he had stippling patterns on his neck, which is due to close range fire, and when writer Jay Robert Nash conducted his reconstruction of the crime scene in 1970 it showed that Dillinger had to have been in a prone position when he was shot. This would suggest that Dillinger was somehow tackled to the ground and was defenseless. (Note: Nash is not a trained or licensed crime scene investigator or forensic scientist, and the bases of his findings have not been scientifically referenced nor validated). Several physical discrepancies also existed. The scar on Dillinger’s face was not present at autopsy, which could have been the result of successful plastic surgery, but upon viewing the victim, Dillinger’s father exclaimed that it was not his son. A close up of the corpse face showed a full set of front teeth, however, it was known through various documented photographs and dental records that Dillinger was missing his front right incisor. The corpse’s brown eyes also did not match that of Dillinger, who supposedly had grey eyes. Finally, the body showed signs of certain illnesses and heart conditions that were inconsistent with prior medical records and Dillinger’s level of activity.

The body was, however, positively identified by John Dillinger’s sister upon viewing a characteristic scar on his leg. Furthermore, the fingerprints recovered from the victim were also poor in quality, due to the fact that Dillinger had attempted to remove his fingerprints by burning them with acid, but showed consistent features with Dillinger’s known fingerprints. The change in eye color can also be explained through post-mortem pigment changes in the eye.

If Dillinger managed to exploit the vulnerability of the FBI and escape death yet another time, this surely would be his greatest escape ever. But, these conspiracy theories are not widely accepted and exist among a small group of individuals not including the law enforcement and scientific communities.

Upon touring the museum your going to see allot of pictures, newspaper clippings and articles written. Allot of the content is fairly morbid which in one instance shows a slain officer laying deceased by a car and photos of a man who was lynched. The man had started to climb the ripe therefore the crowd lowered him down stripped him nude, held matches under his feet and broke his arms to prevent this from happening again. Then their is a photograph of Amelia Earhart whom mysteriously vanished while on a her trek to fly around the world and today her plane has never been found. Another article discusses the last lynching to transpire in Reno where the rope broke and the crowd put a thicker one around his neck. These are just some of the tidbits found at the Storey County Peace Officers Museum of many. Some of the guns on display today and artifacts are in connection with the deaths of notorious criminals but also police officers whom may have died on duty. Thus the museum does boast some darker memorabilia and history which could explain some of the hauntings over the years that have taken place here. The famous Julia Bulette a well known madam in Virginia City was murdered by a John Milliam who robbed and bludgeoned her to death along with his assailments. He was held in this jail and hung on boot hill today the present day Silver Terrace Cemetery nearby before any of these artifacts ever made it to this museum. At one time the jail use to detain bad men to be hung at boot hill or in the yard out back who probably had no idea that years later this place would be a museum mainly devoted to the same law enforcement who stopped them. The evil men that once awaited their deaths at this jail left their essence behind in a sense to the very men who stopped them making this one of the more stranger museums in Nevada.
Cells were small and cramped as much as five men per cell some even sharing bunks together. Allot of times men spent weeks to months in these small cells only to be brought to the gallows.  Some prisoners who were bored during their incarceration often sketched art on the walls of the prison to pass time like this historic graffiti which still can be seen today!
After our investigation at the Old Storey Courthouse we walked downtown Virginia City to check out some of the Halloween decor and merchandise downtown. That would be followed by a nice lunch at the Mustang Ranch Steakhouse. Good eats are a part of what we do at the Paranormal & Ghost Society between our projects and investigations. This allows us to get involved with not just paranormal investigating but also the local culture and meeting other folks locally. I had a massive pastrami steak burger with fries for lunch smothered in bacon. The steakhouse over shadows Silver Terrace Cemeteries & Boot Hill. The same cemetery and hill criminals were hung at that were prosecuted at the Old Storey County Courthouse pretty ironic huh? If you wanted to have a smoke or get some fresh air you can go out on the balcony and get a good view of Virginia City from it including the cemetery from afar. The food and service is great at the Mustang Ranch Steakhouse I highly recommend this place! A great location to dine at before or after the big investigation! In the basement is the Julia Bulette Redlight Museum which talks more about her killer, local brothel history and the madam herself.
