Oakridge Cemetery

I had just left the Lincoln Home this cemetery is actually not to far away. Lincoln and his family chose to be buried here and it was decided in the 1860s so everyone is here in the family minus one of his sons. Springfield is an intriguing historical city and its cemetery is just top notch as I expected it would be when I pulled into the front entrance with a wrought iron overhang and seeing all the monuments in the distance.

The Lincoln Monument is not near the entrance at all I had to drive around a little to find it but I did do a drive through the entire cemetery just to see certain areas I wanted to hike around at. I could not stay here long because I still had a two hour drive to the Bartonville State Hospital and I wanted to get shots before dusk of it. So I had to mainly focus on some older sections of the cemetery and Lincolns Tomb.

The caretakers residence looks like a small castle and so does the tool shed which is all your lawn maintenance materials they keep on hand to keep up with this place. Its intriguing here the cemetery has small rolling hills of just pure green lush grass and time to time you come across flowers growing even butterflies. Given its October some areas I went in Illinois lacked nature while this place flourished with it more then anyone I been so far.

The Lincoln Monument is massive its a couple tiers with a giant monument. On the second tier are bronze statues overlooking the cemetery they look like civil war statues and they appear to be. To get into the tomb is just a door with halls that split on off. But the rotunda area has ole honest Abe sitting in a chair and you can read some history. In fact outside the monument is his famous speech posted on a plaque too.

Their are statues of Lincoln inside this tomb here and there of bronze. But when you get to his tomb eventually its a giant reddish marble earthly slab while his family are buried within the walls of the tomb or the crypt rather with flags being overshadowed by a stained glass window. Lincoln was buried under the stone I read it was about ten feet under it so he is way down there pretty good compared to other tombs I been to. I did notice his oldest son Robert was not buried here but was listed on one of the tombs walls which stated he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

The main reason I visited the tomb is to go with his home we just visited the two tie into one another honestly so its an important edition to our website honestly. I spent sometime walking around the cemetery its huge although it appeared to be harder to find older stones they were mixed with newer ones. The crypts, gravestones and mausoleum are really breathtaking to see here. Many of the stones are gorgeous there is quite a few statues. Would I have liked to see more if I could sure but I had a long drive ahead.

I cant say the tomb or cemetery are haunted but I am sure unseen energy lurks here this is a well visited cemetery but most visit it for Lincolns Tomb. I wanted it to be more about the cemetery as a whole making the tomb a part of the investigation. The governors crypt was really amazing look like something you would see in ancient Greece honestly.

I did what I could I wish I could have saw more really I do but we made our case and we put together a nice little case for our website so others could enjoy its beauty that was our goal. History is everything in what I do its not always about ghosts its about the people who made the world we know today and to be able to talk about them a little for our viewers. Its impressive but it also is a relevant historic site second most visited cemetery really in the country. One can see why once you some of our work we did here on our site.
