Marjorie
Kinnan Rawlings Historic Farmstead
I had plans to do another ghost town it was one I been wanting to do for
awhile and of course we followed the directions we had and they did not
lead us to a particular country route. So I asked a young girl at a gas
station and I was stoned so it sounded like blah blah blah blah to me she
goes you go past the tracks make a left then a right etc she gave me
landmarks not streets so at this point I told Andrew turn on the GPS
system and will just take roads to the get within range of this place.
We did find the old wagon road which cuts threw the ghost town. Actually
its not much of a ghost town we found a few houses and parks surrounding
the homes including two pioneer churches but remnants of the old town
forget it.
I wasted a long time at this ghost town cause you see I have photos from a
book showing all the abandoned places including the cemetery but after
over an hour of driving down the wagon road I assumed it all was either
torn down or very well hidden. We drove down the towns only two little
roads found two abandoned cottages not even worth setting up for an
investigation.
I left the car running and walked up to the church a deer ran past me man
that thing leaped like 6 feet in the air over a bush and fence. I figured
I would do a story on the town with what was around me but after looking
around more I probably will not add this ghost town to the site just not
enough to work with and the name is anonymous cause at this point I would
hate to see people go up here find these places and abuse them cause I am
sure in broad daylight it would be easier.
Anyhow I am including the ghost town with the farm stead cause I simply
worked so hard trying to produce a nice adventure. At this point I was
surprised at how much energy I still had. I took this road which led right
into woods the first time I took it I followed it up for about a mile so I
figured this was a logging road or hunting area so we turned around.
Well after looking around town and not finding any of the structures in
the photos I seen I thought perhaps these roads were wagon roads where the
town once stood. I took us very far in the woods it was risky their is no
houses, no gas stations, no phone booths, etc just straight up off roading
down grassy over grown roads and sandy roads.
I was off roading for awhile the truck was flying over bumps and pot holes
Jason was sleeping his head was bobbling around. I then drove faster on
purpose just so I could see his head all over the place in the back seat
going left and right.
I took this road straight for a long time and eventually the tire
grooves were so deep I had to back out or my truck would be stuck on the
bottom and we would be screwed. I then took another road to the left it
curved around for a couple miles it was rough and we found a small gate
that said beware it just felt pretty off I mean this is not some driveway
this is a series of maze like dirt roads that are so over grown that brush
was flying in our windows.
I went further down the road came across a house it was a newer home but
just very secluded the dogs were barking and I took it to the end when I
ran out of road or rather it was to over grown. I almost got stuck turning
around I had to do a 7 point turn lol but I pulled out very quickly cause
the house with the dogs was becoming active and I got us the hell out
fast.
I got back onto the main dirt road and took another side passage which
became so narrow and horrible I had to back us out for a few hundred feet
and Andrew was getting hit in the face with branches he was like hey man
your letting ticks in the truck. Oh man this was so much fun I got us out
of the ghost town I gave up on it some things are just left better
untouched by man this place is probably buried by brush on these wagon
roads but it was cool being in bigfoot country.
Finally after this charade I moved onto our next and most active place
which was the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic Farmstead. Not to far away
just up the road was our last place on a woodsy road a few homes near by
but for the most part the place is surrounded by streams and two lakes.
I had to pull off this place cause it connects with another location we
investigated last summer you'll understand when you read the prologue. We
parked walking up on the dock looking for some gator's then I started
shining my light on a house oops thought it was the old farm stead my bad
lol. It happens the house looked like a historical home but it turns out
that it was a home built on the edge of the park.
We went away from the house and around the boat launch where we were in a
park with swings, benches, and giant trees. Jason and I went past the
brush and found a very slow moving creek more like a swamp good thing no
gator's were on shore cause we were in an area that looked like it was
full of them.
I then took off ahead cause we seen another structure and that turned out
to be the parks maintenance garage. I was starting to feel a little like a
moron cause I did a lot of research on the place and was like what the
hell where did an entire farm go? Well along a barbed wire fence their was
a gate so we entered the dark path.
As we walked further down the twisting path we seen lights up ahead almost
eerie in a way cause you know nobody is here yet the property is alive at
night. Andrew was a little worried and Jason was being loud as ever lol I
just sat back and thought man am I going to have fun investigating this
place.
In the dim lights I could see an old farm house, chicken coop, garden,
citrus trees, a barn, laundry lines with clothes etc It appeared that the
entire farm stead had been restored to look like when Rawlings resided
here. I did open the coop and took some photos of some cocks sorry ladies
to disappoint you but these ones only peck.
We stood in front of the barn and something behind it was moving around I
have no answer for this cause we visited this area a few times and heard
it everytime. Even when I found out where the sound came from and shined
lights it persisted. Not to mention something moving around in the barn.
Their are no animals in the barn keep this in mind its just used for tours
but yet something was big and banging all around inside.
We made our way back to the house it was quiet so we walked around on the
dark side walked behind it and came to a back porch. All of sudden we
heard something bang inside the farm house. Then it banged near the door
and soon enough a huge bang on the porch. Something was on the porch
watching us as I took photos from just a few feet away.
Jason was off playing in the duck pen they were acting up and Andrew sat
in silence listening with me to noises heard from within this historical
home. Andrew wanted to get on the jungle trail that is what its called
based on the little board that we read. We figured things would calm down
on the trail actually its probably safer to so we explored the woods
behind the farm.
Talk about eerie their were cold spots and this trail was like a jungle
just very overgrown and full of turns. We almost got lost as we took quite
a few turns and an owl was very close by screeching in the night. I mean a
lot of noises out their in the night going on the moon was shining strong
with its bright crescent.
Afterawhile I was anxious and took our team back to the farm stead I
wanted more photos. It came out at this smaller cabin which had the
screens on the doors so you could view the old kitchen, wash buckets,
small beds and things you would see being used over a half of century ago.
We then moved on back over near the house where I stood in front of the
house and heard a loud bang inside. Then I heard foot steps on the front
porch it went clunk clunk clunk and stopped right on the porch. We were
being watched if that is not a ghost who knows what is but at this point I
got my wish for the night some good ghost activity which usually does not
happen often at this extreme.
We backed away from the house and noises persisted something was watching
us from that home and it was loud. Jason was way over on the other end of
the farm we could not see him but the ducks were going crazy no comment
their. Andrew and I carefully investigated the sounds and came to the
conclusion that something is going on with the house itself.
While sitting their in silence above us we heard a giant soaring sound
almost sounded like a hum or do you know how a military jet passes by then
you heard the sound two seconds later? Well it sounded like that. Andrew
and I could feel it like something moved fast over our heads it was not
high up their was no planes but whatever it was made a soaring sound and
was causing a rip through the atmosphere or air. You could air it cutting
through the air kind of like when you whip a stick, a belt, sword etc you
can heard the object cutting threw the wind that is how this sounded but
it lasted a few seconds instead of a quit whip sound.
At this point we had no explanation my theory is we had a UFO move at such
a high speed so low to the tree line that we heard it ripping past us we
probably did not see it cause they use inner dimensional travel then again
if something is moving so fast its like the speed of light you blink its
gone. Being I was stoned driving all night etc Andrew and I just shrugged
our shoulders and said oh okay it did not phase us at this point when its
4am and you been driving all night your just to exhausted to care if the
devil stood in front of you lol. We handled things fairly calmly and
discussed theories and this just adds another odd experience on our
journeys.
As a warning sign we felt we over stayed our welcome we heard the
activity, felt things, and what was above our heads was something non
ghostly. It was a lot of fun here I felt like this was another chapter
wrapped up in connection to The Yearling Trail investigation. Just to
tour such a site that looks like it did over 50 years ago was a treat. Oh
almost forgot to mention an old antique car is in the driveway completely
looks like it did 50 years ago so the entire place was made to look like
general farm life would back many years ago here in FL. Very pioneer like
and lots of history here. I believe that Rawlings spirit still roams the
homestead.
We
arrived back at the car we toked up again in celebration for a wonderful
night of adventure. I mean the driving, hiking, photography, research etc
and work that goes into this we have to be thankful for such feats. I mean
its a lot of other factors to some places are hidden so they are not
always easy to find. But our investigations en tell a lot of things going
on at once we don't just do one set thing.
Our night however was not done we still had to make it home I was beat at
this point and we still had other adventures. We encountered a very heavy
rain storm on the way home it was scattered but it came down hard. Not to
mention all the heavy fog we encountered between the investigations my
eyes were glossed man I was seeing rain, fog and everything else it was
like a nightmare.
We hit some patches of fog going home then hit the train storm. Then I hit
a forest fire yes that's right their was a heavy fire and the road was
almost a white out. We could not see and smoke was filling the truck. It
appeared the fire chief had his warning lights on so either this was a
controlled burn or they just arrived on the scene but the woods were on
fire and I drove right between it all lol.
We eventually stopped at a gas station I got a hot dog and a sausage the
buns were stale their was no onions and the sausage tasted like a pig pen
so yeah it went flying out my window. We had about 65 miles more to go and
we made it home in the morning. I did not get a chance to get out the
report till now cause Lys came to visit me from Miami and she treated me
to dinner did my dishes for me and rubbed my back you do not find many
friends like that but then again she is not from Florida or this country
lol.
I am fairly exhausted still I think that this investigation was team
effort it was a very costly investigation we went threw a couple full
tanks of gas and trust me in my truck that's alot. I would like to make a
return trip to Gainesville I do have other haunted places as long as I do
not go near the college I will not be side tracked lol. But overall I
think everybody is going to enjoy the history, photos etc from this trip
these are some pretty well known places we visited and full of odd
activity.
