I believe the Lake Eaton Sinkhole is the second largest one of its kind in the state of Florida. With it being 80 feet deep and about 450 feet wide and having 3 different trails that lead to its rim it definitely is a competitive area to explore at night. The bottom of the sinkhole contains oak hammocks, magnolias, live oaks, dogwoods, loblolly pines and Sabal palms, The trail is laced with palmettos and deer moss which covers most of the trails in Ocala Forest where the Sinkhole is located. The lake nearby has a trail you can hike along near covered with pine scrubs and hardwoods found near the shore. Their is also scrub oaks, sand live oaks, myrtle oaks and Chapman's oak. Also found under the sand pine are rusty lyonia known as crooked wood and silk bay. The ground is covered in some areas with deer moss. Their are Wav Myrtle and button bushes among the shrubs that grow under the hardwoods. Their is also in contras with the sand pine scrubs their is also red maples, cypress, water oaks, loblolly bay and laurel oaks surrounding the lake. The lake trail across from the sink hole was created when Hurricane Francis and Jeanne knocked down a lot of the forest in this area. Its a fairly new area that was exposed. I been to alot of forest in Florida and this place is a world of its own compared to the rest. Of course as most know Ocala Forest is almost 400,000 acres it has had its share of bigfoot sightings, UFO's and Indian ghost throughout it so that is all our hopes of visiting such place is to be able to catch a glimpse of the strange. © By Lord Rick |
