Kenansville
What an eerie little town to pass through. Now keep in mind this place was
a booming town, then a ghost town and now its a semi ghost town.
Nonetheless it was pretty secluded out in the middle of nowhere. One blink
and you pass by this place thinking nothing of it.
We stopped at the cemetery I had to rush this place cause we had 3 angry
dogs barking and lights on at a residence. Not a pretty picture. I took a
few photos at the entrance then walked all the way to the back working my
way towards the front again.
We all split up to cover more area and I got lucky hit the jackpot and
found the pioneer section of the cemetery. I grabbed a few photos and some
of the stones were children. You could tell because of the little
stone mound that stuck up out of the ground with a tombstone in
front of it. There was also a lot of crosses in this one area tons of them
early pioneers of Kenansville.
We then drove down the road and I pulled on off on an old wagon road. It
has not changed since wagons came into town. We got out walked around a
little and this is one wide dirt road. I wish we had more time to check it
out. It was very eerie.
Eventually we toured the town driving around I wanted to find some of the
houses in the town but all we found were little trailers. This place was a
Springer community I will leave it at that. Lots of ranches around the
area but then some streets were full of little house trailers except for
this one big old house we seen. That house was occupied however but wow
was it eerie looking.
We eventually passed the old precinct was surprised this town had a cop
car and some building with barbed wires around it. It does seem as if the
town was not so vacant after all. We parked over at the Heartbreak Hotel
does Elvis Presley Ring a bell I will say no more.
I took some photos of the side and the front. I could definitely feel a
ghostly presence here watching us it was strong. There was a house behind
the hotel with lights on and a few blocks away someone was sitting in
there car just watching us.
This town was not very welcoming towards us and it really hindered my
investigation to a point. The hotel was a gift shop and one of the
rooms upstairs had lights on. Wish they were open perhaps I could have
gotten a tour inside. There was also a well on the property and
across the street another old structure.
The structure across the street was the old brick bank which we were able
to get an inside shot but there are signs of restoration with all the
power tools I seen. Behind the bank building was a pile of bricks and
pieces which look like they came off the building.
There was a trailer with an old wood porch out back so we had to be fairly
quiet. We could not do to much like I said we were being watched and had
residents to close to both structures.
I could feel the energy to the ghost town and we got back in the truck I
drove around a little passed a brand new post office and the gates of a
ranch. It seems the town had been building up since the last research that
was done on it.
We took one final road and there was an old diner with a cow statue no
comment there. We had our fun then tried to head off to our final
destination of the night which was Crabgrass Cemetery & Bull Creek
Preserve.
We did and we did not complete the Crabgrass area and Ill explain as to
what I mean. Well the fog was thick I made some good time considering it
was a 25 mile drive. The fog at this time was everywhere there was no
breaks in it I drove for over 20 miles straight in it.
We turned off down the rough dirt road now keep in mind this is a nature
preserve so lots of wet lands, swamps, woods etc but nonetheless every
once in awhile we passed a long dirt driveway leading to a house.
The fog on the dirt road was worst then anywhere it was not just a sheet
it was just all over. We came around a corner after 5 miles of traveling
almost and a truck was being pulled it went off the road. So I quietly
gave thanks to myself for being able to maintain my truck the entire night
considering all the areas I drove and dirt roads.
This drive I had to take a little slower so it took forever to try and get
to our focal point which was this cemetery 150 feet off into the woods on
an unmarked dirt road.
I got out to take photos of the preserve sign and a truck was coming fast
I had to haul ass jump in my truck and speed. Cause if I did not the truck
would have been hit as he came around the curve cause the fog was so thick
and who would expect someone to be parked in the middle of the road here
taking photos.
I drove so fast to get ahead that I went right threw the ranger check
station which looked like a cool area there was some campers here, a trail
head, supply station etc and Andrew said ummm Rick I think they seen you
not checking in I said oh well we can blame it on the fog and its true the
station was covered by fog so the blind act I did not see it story could
have worked if it came to that lol.
We went awhile down the road and I found this poor unmarked dirt road
which we pulled off on. This road would be a long drive till we were able
to find the pull off point and walk to the cemetery. The road was rough we
were bouncing up and down.
The further we went the worst the road became then we reached thick sugar
sand. It was real bad to a point that if I were to stop we would be
stuck. We went for a few hundred feet tires were spinning Jason was
crapping his drawers cause he has been stranded with me before he knows
its no fun. Quickly the sand and dirt was becoming so thick no matter how
fast I was going I knew this was the end of the line for us unless I did
something real fast.
I quickly pulled to the left and started driving over palmetto trees
to gain traction. I was not moving very fast as the right tires were
almost stuck and I was not getting much traction. Miraculously I pulled to
my left even more and was on soft land but not enough to sink into. It was
rough and I made a very fast U-turn just in case cause like I said it was
soft.
I was driving over small palmetto trees three feet high and they were
hitting the bottom of my truck as I ran them over. Quickly I pulled back
onto the soft dirt road but I had to shoot off like a rocket or we would
be stuck. It worked and I kept the truck going till we reached solid dirt
road.
We decided to abort the cemetery mission here there was just no way to get
there and the sun was up now so it was time to head on home since our trip
would be very far. I would have loved to have found this hidden cemetery
or some trails but time ran out and so did our energy. This area we were
in is actually very famous it was known for the Horror Of Holopaw Of 1966
when during that year quite a few people kept seeing a bipedal creature
known as the Skunk Ape or bigfoot's cousin.
I drove fast past the check station and got back onto the main road
in no time. We did have one incident where the truck almost flew off into
a ditch it actually lost traction and was gliding across the road right
when it almost went into the ditch I managed to gain control. I seen
Andrew grabbing his seat getting ready for impact Jason's eyes went from
closed to wide opened oh man I was laughing so hard if I just had a camera
to take a photo of his expression lol.
The ride home was a sad one really cause my truck was backfiring on the
interstate and we were burning gas like crazy. Andrew put in a lot of gas
as I we stopped so I could get him some coffee to go with the cookies I
made. I was getting about maybe 5 miles per gallon if I was lucky
only thing I could think of is that shop that forgot to put my lug nuts on
the tire with may have done something else to my truck. Which they played
with the timing belt and I am sure they screwed it up no doubt.
We were worried we would not make it home I picked up my sons from
the babysitters and burned a quarter of a tank to get 6 miles home with
hardly any gas remaining so yeah it was rough. I was so tired all day
yesterday that I did not even bother to look at my computer.
I am sure Jason and Andrew are very proud of having a captain like me in
the helm over the years of investigating you pick up a lot of little
tricks like how to deal with fog, bad dirt roads etc and its paid off.
Andrew got back here and said Rick I thought we were going to do the walk
of shame cause we came pretty close a few times to being stranded or stuck
out in those woods.
It was just nice to get home. We all worked very hard to bring you guys
this story. I was pretty tired and even as of now I still am very drained.
It was a very tiring investigation between the driving, the hiking, and it
took a lot of mental focusing between the unmarked trails, fog, and other
factors.
I do think that each area holds some secrets I am pretty sure there is
some remains of history at Prairie Lakes of the ranchers just as
Kenansville probably has some remnants of abandoned places out in the
woods if they have not already been restored. Unfortunately the Crabgrass
Bull Creek area is a no go unless I can find another driver with a bigger
off roading truck then can take me.
But all in all the night worked out not sure if Ill have an investigation
this weekend I may have to work on the truck unfortunately when your the
only one that drives it really is a major set back when something goes
wrong. I would like to find others who can drive or alternate with me to
make it easier on me of course some of the more skilled investigations I
will drive for.
In conclusion I think your going to see a few good ghost photos come out
of this investigation and as for the rest use your imagination and visual
yourself roaming woods, prairies, and this ghost town with fog all over
and the unexplained!
